For starters, I'd be concerned about the button issue as if is is not just a dirt accumulated from running/swimming (you can soak the watch in water to see), than it may by a physical issue and that is covered by Garmin warranty and epic will be replaced free of charge. Secondly, if this is a Gen2 Pro largest of the 3 watches, to get 5 days with GPS activities is extremely poor and Im guessing there are some settings you can adjust and get easily at least double of that. (I use my Fenix 7X Pro daily with 1hour GPS activity daily and looking at 3+ weeks). Let me know if you need a had with Garmin related things ;)

Garmin Fenix and their buttons... Friend's of mine Fenix 7 back button stopped working while on a surfing holiday last year and again this year on a replaced watch. Mine Fenix 7 back and light buttons got unresponsive after 2 days fresh water windsurfing. Pool swimming seems fine, though.
I can tell you after having the AW Ultra for 10 months and now I have the Epix G2 I absolulty prefer the Epix and I wear it all the time. I prefer the buttons . I prefer the round design vs square. The main thing is that I find the GPS to be much more accurate on the Garmin. The Applewatch Ultra would give me different distances for the same route every time. The AW Ultra does respond more quickly and the screen is slightly sharper looking. I never want to take off the Epix off after a workout, in fact I find it much more comfortable that the AW-U. The AW-U felt heavier and it always felt like it was wobbling around on my small wrist.
Main reason I wear my ultra 2 over my fenix 7 is the pay feature. Garmin pay doesn’t work with most banks. I don’t necessarily need gps and cellular on my watch (however it is nice). But the pay feature is so handy. However, I would never use my ultra 2 for outdoor activities. Garmin all day long. Apple doesn’t use onboard maps without the phone present. So without phone service, ultra is almost useless. Garmins onboard mapping is incredible, with or without the phone.

I decided since I carry a phone during all of my other times that I'm not exercising, I would rid myself of the Smartwatch variety and now I only wear a Garmin. But not just for exercising because it lasts so long without charging. At this point I won't ever go back to a smartwatch.
The thing about Garmin that pisses me off the most is the strenght training with it. Yes, its there, but man is it wrong all the time. Rep counts and heart rate completly wrong therefore calories burned are also wrong. Basicly its useless for a hybrid athlete. Its good for your runs but if you are doing other training sessions they will never be counted towards other metrics like training readiness, body battery etc.
I just sold my AWU and got the Epix Pro 51mm and much prefer the Garmin, much more in depth running and health stats. I did miss Apple Pay and Garmin pay doesn’t support many banks, I found a work around though, I got the Curve card from Samsung and it links every bank and then add that curve card to Garmin pay.
I have the tactix 7 pro ballistics and the AWU2. When camping, hiking, or even shooting garmin all the way but everything else AWU2. Garmin just feels so laggy and cheap for this price point it's kind of ridiculous.

Good point! Garmin works well to track heart rate with history in the connect app. Especially tracking AFIB episodes. I wore the Garmin in the hospital ER the other day and the Dr said the HR was tracking with their gear.
Someone has wrong hr readings on the epix pro, my pulse rate is very low, I'm a Garmin fan but the epix pro 2 simply doesn't work, they already changed my watch and it works the same
LOVE your channel and LOVE the Garmin/Apple comparisons. I have a fenix 7 pro and AW 7. It’s really tough to choose. I think overall, AW is better UNLESS your primary activity is hiking, outdoorsy stuff then Garmin. I took my Garmin hiking in the Rockies and the maps were AMAZING and navigated me safely up the mountain. I got off the trail because of snow. It notified me and led me safely back on the trail.
I've got an Epix Pro 2 and Apple Watch 8 (I thought the Ultra would be too big, but I'll be getting an Ultra 2). I agree that the battery life is better for long trail activities, but I actually strongly prefer the maps on the Apple Watch (using WorkOutdoors, which is a one time purchase of $5 or so) to the Garmin maps. Even on the Epix Pro's screen the Watch screen and the way WorkOutDoors renders the map is just so much nicer. WorkOutDoors will also give you an off route warning. The one thing it's missing is turn-by-turn notifications. (I get around that by also using Footpath for the turn-by-turn, but I understand the point at which you're using two apps on the Watch starts to feel like too much of a hassle to many folks.) I live at sea level and hike in nearby mountains quite a bit (adopt a husky puppy and you suddenly have the most adorably and demanding personal trainer) and while I like the novelty of the acclimation data on my Garmin I have no idea whether it's accurate and what I'd actually do with the info.
@@NoxDineen I really appreciate you sharing your experience. From reading your reply, it got me thinking I need to explore workoutdoors more thoroughly. I downloaded it before on my AW7 and grew frustrated with the setup process. The accuracy of the app was wildly different than the Watch itself which also was a bummer. I guess I need to take another look and watch some tutorials.
I love Workoutdoors, it’s the reason I’ve stuck with AW and not gone back to Garmin. I hike in mountains on weekends and do Crossfit daily, AWU meets my needs. Thanks for the tip on using Footpath for turn by turn!
Fantastic video thanks - and really helpful advice in which to choose! May I ask does the Garmin need to be worn more than the AW in order to take better advantage of the Garmin metrics and training analysis and do you consistently wear both during sleep or one more than the other?
Never had issues with iwatch connecting to Strava. Been using it since series 3. Had a couple of instances with a sync in no signal/ internet but very rare
Your resting heart rate is also important. The battery lasts a long time, even when the Garmin measures your heart rate every second when you are at rest. On the other hand, the Apple Watch does not have enough battery to measure heart rate while resting. And I know the Apple Watch's measurements are accurate, but is it useful to measure heart rate every second? Would measuring once every 10 minutes be useful?
I own both watches (Garmin Marq Athlete gen 2 and the Apple Watch Ultra). I have a tattoo sleeve. My Apple Watch has the hardest time picking up heart rate over the ink. I never have that problem with Garmin.
I went from Fēnix 3HR to Apple Watch 4 to Fēnix 6 Pro Solar. I much prefer Garmin watches and will be getting an Epix Pro G2 soon. I do use the workouts on Garmin, but I select the exercises after I am done with the workout (in the app) and just use the watch to record reps/time/weight, and rest time. May not be the best but it works for me. I do wish Garmin had a better exercise selection though.
I’ve got the Epix Gen 2 and the AWU. I think the AWU is amazing and I’m struggling to justify using the Garmin anymore. So I just use it for MTB or long activities where I need the extra battery. The AWU gets regular 2+ days, so it’s enough for me most of the time. They are both fantastic watches and will suit most people for fitness. Can’t go wrong with either. Another great video.
Epix Pro 2 and AW Series 8 (upgrading to Ultra 2 in a few months) here. With a Fenix 7 Solar Sapphire in a drawer. I'm right there with you. WorkOutDoors, Footpath, Athlytic apps just give me everything I get on the Garmin. They're both amazing devices, but wearing both makes me feel like a bit of an extravagant fool. I wish I'd returned the Epix Pro before that window closed.
I have a Garmin Fenix 5x and it's been pretty indestructible. I have dropped it, slammed it into metal (by accident), etc. I would be afraid to do that with aAWU. But Garmin needs to up its game.
I can only really get one... I climb so AW has a better app for that by far. But I also MTB and go on long expeditions so I feel stuck on that aspect... maybe charging my AWU2 each night isn't too bad but like.. still having days of activity from a garmin sounds really nice. Any recommendations?
Epix Pro will last several years without feeling outdated. Apple Watch is the opposite. And I hate its battery life. Bought apple watch for wing foiling for safety purposes but the battery life is so bad that I feel not comfortable with it.
@radamante3231 For wind sports in the open sea, many things can happen. Wind drop, equipment breakdown, injury etc. Apple Watch with cellular connection is good for emergency. Apple watch also have very good app for wind sport (Waterspeed) but when it's use it to track the battery run out fast. So now I use garmin for tracking and Samsung watch for emergency.
Apple Watches are sweet, I just like the idea of having something that is unique and most people with smartwatches don't have. I'd say 6 out of 10 people with smartwatches have apple Watches, and like 1 out of 10 have Garmins
Been on a binge of your content ever since I found your videos a week ago. The candidness and approach to videos feels refreshing. Good luck to you and the Content Closet! lol
Apple Watch user for years and years, recently got the Epix 2 from Garmin. Each watch has pros and cons as this video suggests, however, as I got more into fitness and hiking the Apple watch started to lose its appeal. Apple is smoother, prettier, and easier. The Garmin is WAY better at fitness and recovery. Even with 3rd party apps like Athlytic , Apple just can't bring it all together like Garmin. I'm waiting till Apple integrates more recovery and training metrics and more than likely I will switch back because ECOSYSTEM.
As far as I know Apple has the more accurate results comparing to Garmin. I like to have accurate results. And from data security standpoint I wouldn't trust Garmin!
@@macb.631Heart rate at rest is also important. Is it more useful to measure your heart rate every second or every 10 minutes? Even if you measure your heart rate every second, it is 95% accurate.

Really well done review. Having gone back and forth between Apple and Garmin I find you nailed the use case scenarios for both watches. And I’m currently Apple Watch Ultra!
No doubt the Apple watch is better for life style for example the train would be super handy. But i kept hearing Apple is good enough or its close enough, having to charge a watch daily AND wear it while you sleep seems impactite

Shervin, after watching your travels with the AWU I finally bought one a couple months ago and have been pretty impressed. Apple Pay is so good I haven't used my iPhone since putting the AWU on. Life changing. I've also taken the AWU on various hiking adventures and its altimeter is spot on with my Suunto's and Garmins. Battery life is as expected so it's not relevant for me given what the watch can do. Apple health is a mess and doesn't put all that data into context like the fitness watches do however, so that's a downside for me. But the AWU is rarely off my wrist. I've even started wearing two watches now :-) Love our travel episodes, so keep making them!!
@@ShervinShares after years of wearing a sports watch (Garmin and Suunto) I kinda feel a loyalty to my Suunto's since they've seen me through multiple ultra's. Plus I'm a data nerd and I love their stats :-) My biggest gripe with the AWU is the wrist temperature - rarely works, just sporadically and I have no idea what's going on. Kinda annoying on $1400 (AUD) watch!
The advantages you point out about Apple Watch are also in the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, at half the price and with the Samsung-Android environment that is comparable to Apples. I have all 3, and when I go out I usually wear th Epix and the Galaxy. Great video by the way!
I figured it out. You organized the apps more vertically than like a circle so it looked like you were scrolling infinitely. Thank you for the quick response!@@ShervinShares
Both are awesome and the best is to get both of them 😆…AWU perfect for a sport life style wear and Epix is perfect for an accurate daily training ! I’m waiting the Epix 3 and AWU3 !
I bought a Garmin Descent 2 dive watch, similar to Fenix, before the Ultra existed. Then my cell co gave me a “free” Apple Watch SE 2. Agree with everything you said in this video. Sometimes I’m just too lazy to put my Garmin on for a run, and Apple is definitely good enough, especially for a short run. And nice to have that backup cell service.
Just sold my Fenix 7x Saphire Solar. Loved that watch. Love the Garmin software. Having said that, the Ultra is a good step in the right direction and having LTE is the killer app of that device. Apple fitness software is getting better. Word is that perhaps the next iteration of the Ultra will have even better battery life. As it stands right now I get a solid 1-2 days on the Ultra with really quick full charge. It's not the two weeks that my 7x was getting, but again, that LTE. Garmin, when you release a true LTE device, I will come running back.
funny he is not talking about how fast apple watch dies when is on LTE..lmao...what is the reason for having all that tech in a watch when the battery is so bad ...lmao
I changed from Garmin to Apple Watch about 8 months ago. Performance wise, LOVED the Garmin, but the Apple Watch's UI and 'gamification' with the rings is awesome. Plus, the notifications sync with the iphone makes it a great productivity device. I use it as a time tracker too (with the Focus Mode linked to Toggl). Lifestyle wise, happily going to stick with the apple watch.
Here as well. Kept on my Garmin descent as a diver but now the Apple Watch is a dive computer as well, I jumped over. Is the Garmin a better dive computer? Yes. But all the other features that the Apple Watch have, makes the watch so much more worth it! Never going back.
Thanks for this valuable review. I agree with trust how you feel- athlytic on Apple Watch solely uses HRV and disregards sleep data for recovery, whereas Garmin incorporates sleep quality into the recovery metric and I feel this is more realistic because fatigue and mood from bad sleep factor into how recovered you feel, so I trust Garmin metrics more
The AWU is missing alot of the core features of the Garmin Fenix but, you can get 3rd party apps to make up. There is nothing wrong with the AWU gathering data and then having 3rd party apps display and analyze. I just wear them both
Video I actually needed (have AW 5 SE at the moment, heavy MTB cycling). Was about to upgrade to Garmin Epix Pro gen2, but after watching this video seems like AW Ultra would fit better for me. In the end I will still stick with my current watch and will check what future releases of both brands will offer and then choose one. Like + Sub!
I wear an Apple Ultra and Garmin 965. Many of their metrics I do not take seriously, but over time they do show trends. For heart rate, I rely on a Polar H10 strap. For people who are not gear geeks, an Apple Series 8 and H10 would be fine.
I also had a button that had stopped working (fenix 7 47mm) It was the back/lap button, so annoying as I mainly used my watch in the pool for timing my splits
One annoying thing about Garmin is how it doesn’t work with Apple fitness rings. Epix 2 user and love the watch but the lack of Apple fitness rings functionality is annoying . I have to complete my workout on my Garmin and then wear my Apple Watch for 1 minute for it to update , sort it out Garmin.
I love your content. Such a good variety of videos and information. But when you do a comparison video against an Apple product it’s so easy to see your “fan boy” come out and play. You totally skipped over the fact that the AW Ultra doesn’t start your activities all the time when your starting an activity with the action button. If you’re going to point out faults with Garmin just make sure you’re being fair across the board.
Cyclist here... AWU all the way. LTE means I don't have to carry my phone. The 3rd party apps can give you whatever you need and still have all the conveniences you mentioned when not working out. Throw it on the charger while showering or driving and the battery isn't a big deal. I would only give the advantage to Garmin on a multi day backpacking trip and that's only because of the battery.

Make comparisons video of apple watch 8 and Garmin apix pro 2
Do you still wear both watches (AW Ultra and Epix Pro)?
i live your videos. I have just one suggestion: can you change the mic? it’s clipping and the overall sound quality is not the best.
I smashed my Harmon 7x0 pro I don’t k ow if I should try apple? I think it’s worth it? I’m so sad I broke my watch :( the I watch looks cooler
Nice man! Helped me decide. Got the Garmin for gps coordinates and navigation in the woods.
I have the tactix 7 pro ballistics and the AWU2. When camping, hiking, or even shooting garmin all the way but everything else AWU2. Garmin just feels so laggy and cheap for this price point it's kind of ridiculous.
Sounds like the Alpine strap is the best compromise between comfort and security.
Hands down the best comparison video I’ve found. Great, straight forward, and realistic info. Getting a garmin. Thank you for all the useful knowledge
I stick to Garmin for the moment, but I'm also looking at the other camp... Can the Ultra measure 24 hour HR continuously instead of every 10min?
No. But ask yourself this: why would you need it ? I have Fenix 7X Pro and half the times i look at it, its wrong anyway. 😂
@@quest666PL Shoudn't be, I have Venu 2 that is seemingly the most accurate Garmin I ever had. Overnight you need to check how restless you're, also I have an anxiety issues that I need to work on. That's why I need it and Garmin and Huawei deliver on that one.
Good point! Garmin works well to track heart rate with history in the connect app. Especially tracking AFIB episodes. I wore the Garmin in the hospital ER the other day and the Dr said the HR was tracking with their gear.
2:36 speed comparsion MAP garmin VS MENU apple?
Someone has wrong hr readings on the epix pro, my pulse rate is very low, I'm a Garmin fan but the epix pro 2 simply doesn't work, they already changed my watch and it works the same
Do you think like that: every lipo battery can have charge and discharge cycle ~1500 time. Apple you need charbe after 3 days. Gamin after 30 days.
I’m considering the Garmin Epix 2. I hate the battery life of all Apple Watches.
You're out here grinding and not sacrificing quality, good job brother.
(I get around that by also using Footpath for the turn-by-turn, but I understand the point at which you're using two apps on the Watch starts to feel like too much of a hassle to many folks.)
I live at sea level and hike in nearby mountains quite a bit (adopt a husky puppy and you suddenly have the most adorably and demanding personal trainer) and while I like the novelty of the acclimation data on my Garmin I have no idea whether it's accurate and what I'd actually do with the info.
Can I use a ANT + Strap on the Apple Watch?
The new minimalist production is really nice ! keep it going man !
Sticking with my Garmin Instinct 2. Absolutely love that thing!!
Extremely informative, great job in presenting multiple different views that a lot of UA-camrs miss.
Love the apple Ultra, but battery ran out on two seperate spartan Ultra races. Having to make the switch because loss of data is just not an option.
Bro. How many credit cards do you need
Very informative! I’m curious to know, where is that running track in New York City?
Well, now I can say - it’s best channel about Apple Watch ultra. And I love it 👍
Very nice video, I like the icons you put on the left to graphically explain what you are explaining
Are we going to have a video comparison between Apple Watch Ultra versus Galaxy Watch 6 classic?
Anyway nice video as always
Never had an apple smart watch? Which one would you recommend for a starter keep in mind I’m basic person and not a tech geek!
I do a lot of biking, bouldering, running, etc. but main focus is swimming. How good is this watch for swimming?
@@FringeWizard2 sorry, I don’t do a lot of swimming so I don’t know.

don`t forget the golf feature in the garmin epix pro - no. 1 for smart watches!
@@eneveasi 7x pro. Unless you don’t mind charging AWU everyday…..
@@marksharp Thanks
Epix Pro will last several years without feeling outdated. Apple Watch is the opposite. And I hate its battery life. Bought apple watch for wing foiling for safety purposes but the battery life is so bad that I feel not comfortable with it.
Great points!
Dam my ultra 2 battery last me 4 days no problem that’s weird.
@@funkmonkeyfun4 days !!? In witch mode?
What means for safety purpose? What give you more the apple?
@radamante3231 For wind sports in the open sea, many things can happen. Wind drop, equipment breakdown, injury etc. Apple Watch with cellular connection is good for emergency.
Apple watch also have very good app for wind sport (Waterspeed) but when it's use it to track the battery run out fast. So now I use garmin for tracking and Samsung watch for emergency.
I can’t seem to leave below average on Apple Watch. I star running and feel much better but my vo2 stays below average:/
I’m using Apple Watch ultra 2 I love the design
Your running seems to be improving bro. You’re looking like a black haired Marwari stallion riding to the hills ☠️ keep it up brah
Now that's a way to compliment. 😂
Apple Watches are sweet, I just like the idea of having something that is unique and most people with smartwatches don't have. I'd say 6 out of 10 people with smartwatches have apple Watches, and like 1 out of 10 have Garmins
1 out of 10 do sports!
If I want a device to motivate me to reach my goal in the gym and improve my sleep quality which should I choose?
I have both, I picked up the epix gen 2 at an open box store for $11. Garmin will help push you more, I’m torn between both currently.
Have you found out yet if the TrainingPeaks integration works? I am already using watchOS 10 and could not find it yet.
Been on a binge of your content ever since I found your videos a week ago. The candidness and approach to videos feels refreshing. Good luck to you and the Content Closet! lol
Where is the flashlight on AWU?
It’s the display
Thank you for the review! To be fair, however, we should remember about hiking experience where Garmin is definitely a winner :)
Shervin, have you tried the garmin track workout option to lock onto the track and if so thoughts on it?
But have you seen the new G-shock smart watch?
I loved this review! I’m going to sell my Apple Watch ultra and get the epix.
Why?
Garmin Epix Pro Gen 2 or Garmin Fenix 7 Pro?
Garmin Epix def has an amazing track features including the lane selection and custom workouts. I did a 5000m race on track and was accurate within 10m over 5000
Really well done review.
Being wearing the AWU for the last year everyday. Just got my Epix pro gen 2 sapphire, and after an hour wearing it I’m already in love. I’m not a jogger though, I like cycling and backpacking. For backpacking the AWU really isnt that good.
so do you wear both or switch watches based on the activity/workout?
@@evilphuk ive been wearing the garmin every day since I got it. I'll probably start using the AWU at work though.
@@xmateinc the smart features are what will make me want to keep wearing the AWU. I wouldn't use the Epixfor notifications or music. Did you use Epix for music and notifications?
@@evilphuk it does good on notifications and honestly I use my iPhone for music. I ride my bike and backpack a lot these days so really liking my Garmin. Plus I like the look better. But if I didn’t want to take my phone or I’m at work and might not be near my phone, the awu is better. Plus the awu is just a really cool watch as well.
I've even started wearing two watches now :-)
Love our travel episodes, so keep making them!!
Yes love it! Welcome to the two watch gang! Curious what would it take for you to only wear one watch?
@@ShervinShares after years of wearing a sports watch (Garmin and Suunto) I kinda feel a loyalty to my Suunto's since they've seen me through multiple ultra's. Plus I'm a data nerd and I love their stats :-) My biggest gripe with the AWU is the wrist temperature - rarely works, just sporadically and I have no idea what's going on. Kinda annoying on $1400 (AUD) watch!
شروین خوبی؟ یه سوال ازت دارم
The advantages you point out about Apple Watch are also in the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, at half the price and with the Samsung-Android environment that is comparable to Apples. I have all 3, and when I go out I usually wear th Epix and the Galaxy. Great video by the way!
I have Garmin epix pro gen 2. Display failed after 2 months. This is not ok for a 1000 euro watch..
Did garmin send u a new one
@danielvargo4498 yes! They send me a new one
@Shervin subscribed!
Question: how did you get the app view to infinite scroll?
Honored! Which app view
I figured it out. You organized the apps more vertically than like a circle so it looked like you were scrolling infinitely.
Thank you for the quick response!@@ShervinShares
grip app view on the ultra**@@ShervinShares
i think the VO2max history on garmin can be found on the training status
I think it’s in the performance stats
Garmin gives way more data and is definitely more precise than Apple watch ultra. The Garmin battery last when I do longer runs or bike rides.
Garmin having more precise data is simply not true.
@rgmALC that is a fact you apply fanboy
How much on battery? I only need this to decide. Thanks
Both are awesome and the best is to get both of them 😆…AWU perfect for a sport life style wear and Epix is perfect for an accurate daily training ! I’m waiting the Epix 3 and AWU3 !
Hey @shervinShares ! How is the watchOS beta working for you?
I bought a Garmin Descent 2 dive watch, similar to Fenix, before the Ultra existed. Then my cell co gave me a “free” Apple Watch SE 2. Agree with everything you said in this video. Sometimes I’m just too lazy to put my Garmin on for a run, and Apple is definitely good enough, especially for a short run. And nice to have that backup cell service.
Why everybody talk about running in Garmin watch nobody to talk about powerlifting or bodybuilding in the Garman watch, how to use it in the gym
Stats wise Garmin is miles better in the Garmin connect app.
I have both.. 🤷🏽♂️ I use them for cycling and sleep tracking. Plus I'm a gadget junkie.I think the Whoop does the best sleep tracking
Love it
does that mean you wear them both at the same time or varying by activity/workout?
@@kasperk679interesting! 🤿
I just wear them both
Sucks though that you have to pay for features on the Apple Watch that you get on Garmin for free.
@@chadshawver3870 very good point
Video I actually needed (have AW 5 SE at the moment, heavy MTB cycling). Was about to upgrade to Garmin Epix Pro gen2, but after watching this video seems like AW Ultra would fit better for me. In the end I will still stick with my current watch and will check what future releases of both brands will offer and then choose one. Like + Sub!
Apple iwatch for casual fitness people. For athletes and people with serious fitness goal the Garmin all the way.
Hahaha I love the part “Oh my gosh I just switched from Apple to Garmin and now I’m an Apple person” hahaha I’ve done this about 50,000 times.
Thanks for the video. I have both of them and will keep them ;-)
Great physics by the way!
I had thought this was resolved? read on forums that the workout on garmin would help close out the rings?
I loved your video. I follow other people and happened onto your page. You provide excellent information in your video. I had to subscribe...
I like the round Garmin shape.
