I still think they should stick to the martial arts fighting. It gave the magic system (bending) so much realism because it had rules. It wasn't just "fling your arm around and stuff happens", there were clear rules on which moves did what and it was consistent throughout the series. That made the series so much more immersive

A very interesting aspect for a futuristic setting would be Spiritualism, or rather the lack of it.
As fighting styles become more and more refined and efficient for real life usecases, as in defeating opponents as quickly and easily as possible, a lot of what martial arts represent gets lost. That is the aspect of not only mastering fighting but rather mastering yourself, and, through discipline, controled movements and rigorous training learning the limits of your mind and body, and how to go past them.
Bending is similar, in a vein that to truly master bending you must understand the flow of energy within yourself, the philosophy and meaning behind the art and the movements used to control your element, to be in touch with your inner world so to speak. And the lack of that is exactly what ive been noticing in Korra. For example the lightning that repuclican benders create and control appears to be far weaker then those produced by Benders of the past, who could, using their Lightning, on a good day explode the side of a mountain.
The reason for that i believe is that while, as said, bending as a martial art is becoming more efficient as a means of fighting the spiritual and philosphical roots of the arts slowly become lost over time, as benders stop seeing it as a way of life but rather as a means to an end. So, while more people become more competent at doing things barely anyone takes the time to truly delve deep into what is truly possible, besides that which can be easily picked up and learned, and so, while more versatile, modern bending is rather shallow, and barely anyone is able to create acts of truly grand bending anymore.
So, what id imagine for that setting is this: A futuristic city. Lots of people, lots of crime, violence, hopelessness and despair. Gangs vieing for control, using modern, refined bending arts to combat each other. In the midst of all of that we have the Avatar, who, despite beeing able to bend all elements, is more or less helpless in trying to bring peace, as even with the bending arts he learned he is no match for the fighting gangs, as they easily overpower him as the modern bending styles he learned are simply not enough to contend with that many enemies at once. Then something happens, which drives him to undertake an expedition to the roots of bending, on a spiritual journey with his companions, to rediscover their true nature and whats truly possible beyond the hyperefficient fighting styles of modern day. He reconnects with the past, and through this he creates a new school of bending, one that unifies the modern, efficient style with the ancient roots of the art, and creates something truly grand, with which he vows to bring peace to not only his city but to the entire world.

I guess I wonder what makes the connection with the old ‘better’? The modern methods develop through ultilitarian outcome through trial and error over generations. How can the series convey the use of reconnecting to the philosophy other than make it more useful (which doesn’t make sense)? It isn’t going to be satisfying in an action show if it is just personally enlightening.

@@jmass4207 A large part of bending in Atla was the philosophy/mindset behind it. That's why when Zuko swapped sides, he let go of his anger and lost his bending as a result. I feel like the argument here is that the overfocus on hyper-efficiency and being able to teach large groups at once led to the bleeding out of the philosophy behind bending, leading to weaker bending as a result, even if it is easier to learn.

The thing is, Aang already showed that learned from the past is necessary to change the present (and ultimately the Future).
I liked what they did with Aang a lot, and it felt like Korra was just going a more Marvel Route of things, where Bending became more of a Super Power you were just born with, rather than aquired/trained over a long time like in the first one.
I fear the next one might bypass the training Parts completely and just give the new Avatar "upgrades" over Time, similar to David.

I feel like what happened was Avatar studios tried to replicate what made Avatar great in korra and they don't know how to, People create masterpieces all the time by accident and I feel like its just that, they don't know what made it great and how to follow up. Its why Kora felt kinda lost like it didn't really belong in the universe and kind of like a distant annoying relative.

    • @RR-mc4qj
      @RR-mc4qj 8 місяців тому +28

@@thorntonpirker4037 I think the issue with Korra was ultimately the lack of planning for her complete arc (and for most of the characters). They didn't know that they would get more seasons when they were doing S1. Similarly for S2. When they did S3 they knew they would get both S3 and S4, so they could create a compelling arc for Korra: her trauma and recovery arc. Korra was intended to get with Mako at the end of Book 1 but the creators liked Korrasami more and went with it. Unfortunately, we end the series with Korra and Asami just starting their relationship instead of seeing it explored fully throughout. Asami as a character is presented as an afterthought for most of the series and she deserved much more.
Mako gets sidelined and stops growing as a character. Bolin continues to grow and has genuinely good moments throughout the show. Tenzin and his family and the Bei Fongs have excellent development throughout the show. I think there was just a lot of poorly planned writing that ATLA doesn't have because that show is written and plotted so tightly. Every moment feels purposeful and leads to something satisfying within the show itself (except Ursa's disappearance, which required the comics for resolution).
I think Korra just needed more time to cook (and in S4 some more budget so we didn't have the recap clips episode).

I think a better way to get to a cyberpunk era instead of doing the next avatar after korra they should go a full cycle later to the next earthbending avatar. This would also help solve the past lives problem so this avatar can have some past lives to look to for advice rather than just korra. Also this would end up being like 500 years into the future which would be much easier to explain the major advancements in technology, rather than ust 100-150 years later.

What we have seen in Korra at the end with spirit powered robots is just like an industrial revolution again. After that Korra went to the spiritual world she could have lived there for another 50 Years or more. 50 Years without the avatar and an open gate to the spirit world could easyly nuke the world to the stone age or give them technology that would normaly be developed hundreds of years in the future

In Iroh’s first scene he tells Zuko “Firebending comes from the breath, not the muscle “ lots of high level bending techniques are about mindset, for example true flight can only be achieved by letting go of all earthly attachments, the most spiritual nation (air nomads) had a near 100% bending rate. Imagine if lightning bending was refined to being able to remove all the electrons from a region and suddenly create dwarf star matter, or an airbender refining and compressing hydrogen from the atmosphere until it creates plasma, a metalbender refining and colliding uranium, or a bloodbender discovering the relationship between chi and neurotransmitters so they can become human supercomputers like Mentats in Dune

I still think while lighting bending was more common in Korra, it seemed alot weaker than in ATLA. I remember Mako hitting someone with lighting and it didn't insta kill, more like just a stun. Where else in ATLA, it was depicted as a much more destructive technique, and an insta kill if you didn't dodge in time and didn't t know how to redirect lightning. So while the skill was democratised, its full potential was not passed down, only those who had intimately delved in its nature like the royal family probably did would be able to tap on its full destructive capabilities.

That or having an anti avatar in play, the world at that point would probably have to be near torn down to start anew, too distopiaon and quickly volatile for the avatar to really take full control and master the elements. They would be fighting criminals left and eight, and almost all bending would extremely quick and agile movements with much force as possible put into it, like a street fight with no rules, where the environment is just as dangerous as the people, metal being torn and thrown, fire or rock being turned to lava thrown at you before you can think, and blood bending and other forbidden bending running rampant, They wouldn't be able to use their full potential, because the world would really have powerful benders, just highly skilled fighters with bending. having an anti avatar would make their journey either 1. Harder because they then have a force actively working against them or 2. Somehow they both work together in a yin yang sort of situation to fix the world by sending it back to its roots, and bringing the spirit back to a world far from its original ways,

Honestly, I'm hoping the new avatar won't take place until about 60-70 years into the future, because it would be cool to see an avatar struggling with not being connected to past lives and possibly even having Raava and Vaatu merged with their spirit. I know the latter is unlikely, but I just can't believe that a child's spirit was able to speed up Raava's recovery, and opening a new spirit portal didn't do the same for Vaatu. It would also be nice if a new series tackled issues that many people face such as anxiety, depression, toxic family or relationships, addictions, burnout, poverty, etc. and in my opinion setting the story in our times would make it easier for vievers to relate to the characters.

Then in future people with bending are seen more as hero types or enemies that normal folk want to control more. I know they touched on this is Korra, but I don't think they did this story well. Avatar was supposed to be seen as a 'god' in Aangs time. I believe this should have become more so in the future as bending dies out and tech takes over. Then it would make benders seem more special and more of a threat to normal humans. Just kind of like how superheros are seen in modern day adaption stories. In Aang's time, the Avatar was basically a God. Even the Firelord powered by Sozin's comet wasn't enough to keep up with the Avatar state. In Korra's time, that power gap narrowed. People could defeat an Avatar state and giant mechs are also on the table now.

the difference between Traditional bending and the new age MMA style is that traditional takes years to learn and master while the MMA style could be picked up and “mastered” within a year
I’m gonna say how i honestly feel is that Korra took the power out of the avatar state, with Aang the avatar state was never used unless something major happened while Korra would use it to win a race, against war ships the avatar state was able to decimate an entire fleet while Korra couldn’t fight off a single person one on one
the writers just clearly didn’t know how to make Korra work since she technically was a fully realized avatar at the end of season 1, how can you make someone who has godly power struggle? you have to weaken the godly power
if anything they could bring back the importance of the avatar in society by having this new generation witness an uncontrolled avatar state that causes devastation and finally realise the power that ended the hundred year war

Way to send the series to its doom. The Avatar is the bridge between the worlds. What's the point of writing "Avatar - We Don't Need No Stinkin' Avatar," exactly? Tons of romance and charm in that approach (note the sarcasm). Or it would be a cheesy set-up for the Avatar to still end up having to save the day in the end.

I personally would love an Avatar story where the Avatar in question is a catalst for something destructive. The Avatar is not just some kind of brige between the ghost world and the different elements but also, a protector of nature and life. Now imagine Humans are the ones to destroy it all, the Avatar would naturally end up needing to make the hard descision if they want to let Humanity continue or if they want to bring an end to it at the cost of Humanity as they know it. It would be fun to have a story where an Avatar is essentially, the "bad" guy. It's not like they are beyond "bad" actions, actions that cost life or end up destroying things. Avatars in the end are their own people and I could see a fun story being spawned out of this especially if you consider the wedge between Avatar and the people closing and closing to the point the Avatar would NEED to move silently and thoughtfully to end up being able to do what they want to do.

@@DeadlyChinchilla It's not "sending the series to its doom". It's building naturally upon the things that The Legend of Korra already set up. "The world doesn't need an Avatar" is literally one of the problems that Korra struggles with in the show.
Now imagine technology advanced ever more because it sure as hell isn't going backwards. What do you think will happen to the Avatar then? If you want the Avatar to feel needed you'd have to justify why the tech which was already competing with the Avatar isn't enough anymore. Or you'd have to change the setting of the story and leave Republic City alone.

It doesn't make sense for bending to evolve the same as real world martial arts though. A wide stance makes a lot of sense when fighting an earthbender, they can shift the ground. Wide spinning attacks make sense when attacking an airbender who can dodge to the side to the side fast as the wind.
And while bending styles will learn from each other, it doesn't change the fact that each element's capabilities and specialties are unique. Learning from other elements can help lessen their weaknesses and compliment their strengths, but it doesn't make them unimportant.
Firebenders have limited options for defense, so being very offensive makes sense.
Airbenders have limited options for offense, so being very defensive makes sense.
Earthbenders can create and repair cover. Moving a lot (in either direction) is probably riskier than staying still.
Waterbenders have alright options for mobility, attacking, and defending. Adapting each moment makes sense.
A fighting style that makes equal use of all four philosophies doesn't make sense for anyone but the Avatar.
Zuko learned a lot of useful stuff from waterbending, but in Ba Sing Se, when Zuko attacked with a waterbending move and the Dai Lee blocked, he was out of luck. Attacking like a firebender and going all in on offense probably would've made more sense.
TL;DR: In real life all fighters have the same basic capabilities. That's not true in the Avatar world, so it doesn't make sense for them to fight the same as us or each other.

As both an Avatar fan and a shooting sports enthusiast I've long fantasied how bending would effect/be mixed with modern firearms usage. A lot of people don't know this but proper firearm handling IS a martial art in and of itself with hours of training needed to be proficient in using, applying, and being accurate with firearms. We have stances, reload techniques, trigger control, hand placement, recoil control, and various styles and systems of how we move our bodies for proper application of our weapons just like how masters of blades would train day in and day out. A gun is a tool, just like bending. The user IS the weapon.
That being said, I'm curious to see what benders would gravitate to which firearm stance. Would Earth Benders prefer crouched or prone shooting techniques with light machine guns thus opting for more defensive infantry regiments? Would Water Benders prefer the chaotic flow of CQB and urban fighting techniques and thus have some of the best modern special forces brigades? Do Fire Benders rely more on vehicles and use techniques and firearms that emphasize motorized and mechanized warfare? Would Air Benders prefer long range attacks, breath control with sniper rifles, and calling in airstrikes to deal with most of their problems? Just some food for thought

Even Earthbenders couldn't Bend this type of special Crystal. The Crystal would change color based on the Element it absorbs (Green for Earth, Red for Fire, Opaque/Gray for Air and Blue for Water). It can only hold one Element. These would act similar to "Sea Prison Stone" in One Piece. A Bender can't bend when these crystals absorb the person's Element. I call them "Chi Crystals" or "Chi Stones".

Edit: Also, since these Crystals can only absorb 1 Element per Crystal; they can allow for the other 3 Elements to still be effective. So, if you have a Firebender prisoner with a Fire Chi Crystal; a Waterbender wouldn't be effected by it.

I would really like to see how bending techniques have evolved for bending and even seeing them bring back ancient bending techniques as part of modern healing protocol. Like the ability in the Kyoshi books to use water bending to essentially just barely freeze a body so they can survive long enough to be healed elsewhere. I could see modern avatar world ERs and EMTs using that technique to save people from motor vehicle accidents and things like that.
Also even if they do cyberpunk, I do hope that they still preserve some of the traditional aspects in avatar similar to how in countries like Japan have modernized areas but also areas that are untouched by technology or preserved traditional architecture. Also even if some areas do advance to cyberpunk, there will always be poor villages that aren’t advanced or using that technology. Imagine if the new avatar was actually born in poverty and when they go to an advanced city for the first time, they experience a culture shock from it.

Dang. I was hoping the next Avatar series would follow both the Earth and Fire Avatars. Through some sort of hiccup during the reincarnation cycle the avatar had been reborn to two different beings. The prince of modern day Omashu and a Fire Nation orphan. They would look identical giving a Prince and the Pauper vibe. Their only difference being in their bending capabilities. While they are both the avatar, they can only bend half the elements and cannot bend their native elements. The Earth Avatar can bend Air and Fire, while the Fire Avatar can bend Water and Earth. Meaning they gotta work together to do more complex forms of bending and come up with ways to compensate their weaknesses when they are apart. Basically having to learn to fight as one since they are two halves of the same person.
If something happens to one of them the other is at the same risk since they share the same spirit.
Well we are still in the rumor phase so maybe they could still surprise us.

May need a content warning at the start of each of the more darker episodes...and an attempt at bringing to life a Kingdom Hearts Animated series where instead of Donald and Goofy, Sora's adventures are with Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Max. There would be a few filler/character focused episodes on the gummi ship in between the world hopping...granted i may have to remove Final Fantasy to spare them from kiddification under modern Disney's rule, but Square Enix will still make money for everytime a KH originated character appears so they arent exactly being screwed. Also other characters can handle exposition such as Merlin and Fairy Godmother from KHI. Which leaves olympus open for an entirely different story route where after the Deep Jungle is swallowed by the Darkness due to their constant bickering and lack of empathy towards Sora's situation of having lost his home, Queen minnie suggests to them that they should seek out phil in Olympus so they may learn how to better cooperate with each other as he had at one point helped Mickey, Donald and Goofy when they were around their age. Yes this plays around with the Disney multiverse continuity abit but if it helps give Nomura a vacation and a little extra funding in the event of having to delay a future release i think it could work well. One thing to consider for the world of avatar are the nonbenders for the next avatar my theory is that if there's a next villain/antihero where they know the movement of bending but it's applied to hand to hand combat. One thing Avatar lacked was hand to hand combat, since all benders in the series have been using their bending as ranged attacks never thinking a situation where they have to be up close and personal (I could be wrong though) they could take some inspiration with Naruto with their hand to hand to make it more creative like witg part 2 of the day of black sun. Since one thing that could be a big problem later on with Avatar is how defenseless the non benders, they're on a constant losing battle with benders overtime who knows if the show progress they'll be a time where nonbenders don't exist anymore.

Now stop hording the information and younger fire benders would be able to learn the art while young and progress it further than those stuffy Nobles that kept it only restricted to their select masters.
