Thanks for teaching the Russian join. It makes so much sense! I have many small balls of yarn and often combine them but had not thought of actually making cakes. Thanks!
I was taught the Russian join decades ago, love it, but I take several more stitches than you do...I'd be afraid only two or three stitches wouldn't be enough...thanks for the demo❤
Try putting your paper roll on a hand held blender, with one whipper in and you would be suprised just how fast it goes. That is if you don't have a yarn winder. You can also use a paper towel holder and cut it to the appropriate size that's needed. GREAT VIDEO, SUBSCRIBED!
I have a large stash I am proud of being judged for. I was thinking of how to maximize my space and found your video. To create cakes will bring lots of creativity and sanity for space situation ..... thank you for sharing!!!!
Thanks for the Russian join instructions, I've never tried that but I'm going to now! Also I'm going to make use of my toilet paper rolls because Ive never had a winder! Thanks so much!
Thanks so much for sharing that idea!!! That is absolutely awesome the Russian join and the cakes that way you can do colors you really love together. Your a wonderful crochet instructor!
You've inspired me. I've never thought of making my own yarn cakes. I have a stack of small balls of yarn and a yarn winder. Also learned the Russian join. Never heard of it before. Where have I been? Fantastic stuff. I'm all enthused. Thank you so much for your fab ideas. xx
Thank you I have tried so many other ways to learn the Russian join. Never did I ever get it to work. Now I done it several times with your method and it works perfectly! Thank you!!!
Sara, the way you join your yarn is much easier then what I've seen on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing. This looks like a lot of fun. These would also make great gifts for yarn lovers
Yes you r inspiring me too! Wonderful Video...just the info I was looking for! Thank you for sharing your valuable information for us yarnies...it’s a wonderful Fiber World Despite the worries of our Days...Peace and Love to Everyone!
WoW, look at your beautiful yarn wall!! Just beautiful, I'm jealous!! Thanks for these great tips. Awesome content. Awesome content, thanks so much for sharing. ❣️❣️
For those of us with pet children, allowing the yarn to roll from the carpet is not an option--no matter how well you vacuum!;D So, get a large soup pot or a clean small plastic dollar store trash can for use with this only and drop your ball in one of those. This will keep your yarn clean and will wind fast!
Hi Sara, I haven't been on for awhile now. I moved in April to a very small town( between 500 & 600 population) in the country, in South Carolina. It's called a town but we don't have anywhere to shop. Just a feed store. Not even a grocery store. Anyway, i have been winding my yarn to pull from the middle since 1976 after a Catholic Nun showed me how. I started making balls but now I make it into a cake. No inside form except my thumb. Lol. I do like the way you joined your yarn. I'm going to try that.
I am definitely thinking that I can make my own cake to replace one that they no longer make anymore, it’s the Pumpkin Spice by Caron Cakes. They no longer make it anymore and I am so disappointed so this video gives me hope that I can create my own! Yay! For you Sara, love your channel! Thank you so much
Excellent! Great tutorial as always. Big fan of your videos. Greetings from County Kerry, Ireland! Now i know what to do with all my green, white and gold yarn scraps! Many thanks again!
Wow I thought my yarn stash was alot... All that yarn behind you, Ha ha! Happy Crocheting wit it all! Ha ha! & more of your fabulous tutorials with it hopefully 😋 because I love all your fantastic ideas! Erica x
Fabulous! I am totally now wanting a peg board. I haven't heard of the Russian join and it is awesome. Such an excellent method for combining colors. I have a bag of toilet paper rollers that were about to be recycled. I just pulled them out for their new job. Then once they get worn out send them to the recycle bin for their next life. I have a suggestion for repairing the squeak on your winder. Just use a dab of olive or vegetable oil, etc (any oil will do) on the area that is squeaking using a cotton swab. I use this for squeaky doors when I don't have any WD-40 around. Thank you so much for the video. You have gotten me all excited about making cakes! :-)
What a great idea! I have a HUGE bag of scrap balls. I just love the way you do the Russian join. It looks so much easier than others I've seen. Thanks, Miss Sara, terrific tips :) ~~~~ waving to you from SoCO, at the bottom of the San Luis Valley!
Good job. I never thought of making cakes but I have used your method of winding yarn around toilet tissue tubes. I also used Christmas paper wrapping tubes. I love your Russian join also. It really works good.
I absolutely love your videos!! I'm so glad I found your channel! Keep up the great job you do and I'll keep watching! I watch your videos more then any others on UA-cam!
Thank you I got a lot of small yarn balls can't wait to put them together. Now I'll have the 2 colors I want. Not what they have. And the Russian yarn join together love it always tied up in knots not no more.
Great ideas! If you have a little rubber pot grabber, put it underneath your ball winder, I wrap one around the table edge so that it protects the table top and underneath, then Your ball winder won’t slip as easily, and it will be easier to wind.
😳 That’s it to make a Russian join?!? I thought it was a really complicated process so I’ve never ventured to learn....🤦♀️ Thank you so much for this tutuorial....I’m so excited to do this from now on!! ....Tara
What a great idea now I'm going to do the same thing also I need to buy a yarn winder because I have spools of factory very thin ply and I have to make my own ply so thank you so much for the information 💋
Thank you for this video. I love using variegated yarns and I don't have much space for my yarns so this is great. I plan on getting a yarn winder asap being able to make my own cakes with my own color picks sounds like a dream. Liked & subbed.
Wow this is so great Sara Thank you, thank you for sharing this... we cannot get Bernard or Caron cakes in the UK unless you buy off the internet & with postage it works out quite expensive. Well it is for myself expensive anyway. Even though it's easy to change colours with yarn these cakes are fabulous! thanks again Sara. 😋 Erica
I’m smacking myself on the forehead! Lol. Very savvy! And THANK YOU for teaching me the join! THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE with us! You. Are. Awesome. ✌🏻♥️⚜️ from southeast Louisiana.
Sara this was a lot of funto watch it also gave me clear & concise instructions. I'm so glad I found you today. Thank you for your ideas. I subscribed & look forward to seeing more of your videos. ❤ 💘 ❤
Loved your video, loved you. I’m thinking you have a store from what I see behind you and I bet your customers love to shop with you. You just have that very friendly feeling about you and your wealth of knowledge is just a bonus. Thanks for sharing. I’m going to subscribe now and then check out the rest of your channel. :)
Thanks, for sharing your tips. To help your squeaky cake winder, spray some cooking spray or dab a bit of vegetable oil, onto it. Works like a charm. The cooking spray can be a little messy. So, have a paper towel handy, to wipe of any excess. 😉
I save the toilet paper tubes to use when I make baby booties. I cut it in half and put them were the feet go in. They help support the booties when I store them in a sandwich bag. Nice thing about the cakes is they stack neatly on a shelf or in a tote.
I love this. I can never find a red, white, and blue yarn cake and I am horrible at changing colors at end of a row! Now I can make my one on the yarn winder with my Premier Basic yarn. I like to work from the center of the cake when I start a project. How do you make sure you can find the center of the cake when you want to start your project? Thank you so much!
I am quite new to crocheting and let me tell you this entire video completely blew my mind.
Great video

That is why I talk about a large bowl or container.
I love how you join the different colors. I've never seen that done before. Great method. Thank you.

I don't use anything with oil near my yarn, I use wax paper for the squeak.
I like how you did the Russian Join! Thanks- great video!
Thank you. I plan to use this method instead if a ball. Peace, Love & Blessings! ☮️🕊❤️🙏🏽

Thanks, for sharing your tips. To help your squeaky cake winder, spray some cooking spray or dab a bit of vegetable oil, onto it. Works like a charm. The cooking spray can be a little messy. So, have a paper towel handy, to wipe of any excess. 😉
PHs_Motivator Thanks for the tip, but I don’t mind the squeak, and I am not putting any oil near any of my yarn.
Great idea with the toilet paper cardboard.
I save the toilet paper tubes to use when I make baby booties. I cut it in half and put them were the feet go in. They help support the booties when I store them in a sandwich bag.
Nice thing about the cakes is they stack neatly on a shelf or in a tote.
Janet McNutt me too

I recycle my tub in my compost for garden dirt for the next spring garden seasons.
I love my winder!!!
Great idea!! I love your method of joining your yarns. Have you ever had it come undone in a project?
Nope, never!
love your joining method
Hey Sara Sach I wondered if your homa made cakes pull out from center?
I love this. I can never find a red, white, and blue yarn cake and I am horrible at changing colors at end of a row! Now I can make my one on the yarn winder with my Premier Basic yarn. I like to work from the center of the cake when I start a project. How do you make sure you can find the center of the cake when you want to start your project? Thank you so much!
Make sure the end is sticking out when you wind it.
@@SaraSach Thank you so much.
Never would have thought of that?!
i just got one for my birthday
Thanks for the wonderful tips Sara. What brand yarn winder are you using. So many brands with mixed reviews.
great video!
