Thanks for teaching the Russian join. It makes so much sense! I have many small balls of yarn and often combine them but had not thought of actually making cakes. Thanks!

I was taught the Russian join decades ago, love it, but I take several more stitches than you do...I'd be afraid only two or three stitches wouldn't be enough...thanks for the demo❤

Try putting your paper roll on a hand held blender, with one whipper in and you would be suprised just how fast it goes. That is if you don't have a yarn winder. You can also use a paper towel holder and cut it to the appropriate size that's needed. GREAT VIDEO, SUBSCRIBED!

For those of us with pet children, allowing the yarn to roll from the carpet is not an option--no matter how well you vacuum!;D So, get a large soup pot or a clean small plastic dollar store trash can for use with this only and drop your ball in one of those. This will keep your yarn clean and will wind fast!

Hi Sara, I haven't been on for awhile now. I moved in April to a very small town( between 500 & 600 population) in the country, in South Carolina. It's called a town but we don't have anywhere to shop. Just a feed store. Not even a grocery store.
Anyway, i have been winding my yarn to pull from the middle since 1976 after a Catholic Nun showed me how. I started making balls but now I make it into a cake. No inside form except my thumb. Lol. I do like the way you joined your yarn. I'm going to try that.

Fabulous! I am totally now wanting a peg board. I haven't heard of the Russian join and it is awesome. Such an excellent method for combining colors. I have a bag of toilet paper rollers that were about to be recycled. I just pulled them out for their new job. Then once they get worn out send them to the recycle bin for their next life. I have a suggestion for repairing the squeak on your winder. Just use a dab of olive or vegetable oil, etc (any oil will do) on the area that is squeaking using a cotton swab. I use this for squeaky doors when I don't have any WD-40 around. Thank you so much for the video. You have gotten me all excited about making cakes! :-)

    • @SaraSach

I don't use anything with oil near my yarn, I use wax paper for the squeak.

Great ideas! If you have a little rubber pot grabber, put it underneath your ball winder, I wrap one around the table edge so that it protects the table top and underneath, then Your ball winder won’t slip as easily, and it will be easier to wind.

Thanks, for sharing your tips. To help your squeaky cake winder, spray some cooking spray or dab a bit of vegetable oil, onto it. Works like a charm. The cooking spray can be a little messy. So, have a paper towel handy, to wipe of any excess. 😉
