The label can always be stuffed inside the cake when finished to keep things easy...also, attach the snipped thread ties to the label so if it gets separated you which ones go together...also makes a great future reference on past projects.

By far my favorite tutorial for hand winding center pull yarn! I wanted to share with you one thing I found that's way better than toilet paper roll, empty aluminum foil / seran wrap / wax paper empty rolls. They are much sturdier and last a good long while.

Great idea! I used an empty Balsamic Glaze container! lol. I cut the top off, and then made the slits on the open end :) Worked like a charm and will last a long time as well.

Great video, but a note of caution. I have had multiple skeins that did not use separate yarn tied around to keep the skein shape. They use a twist of the yarn to hold it in place. Do not cut until you confirm the strands are not part of the skein.

I just happen to come across this video the same day I received a skein of yarn that needs to be a ball. My last one was a "ramen noodle mess" - took 5 days to untangle! Thank you for this!!

This is exactly what I needed. I want to get a gift... a yarn bowl, for a new daughter in law and wondered about how to put a ball of yarn in it. I could get a pre wound ball but this is just a perfect idea. We could even wind it together after I give her the gift. It will be fun. Thanks for posting.

I'm so glad you put this video up. Because I just got a new skein and when I when to pull from the middle to find the end. The entire skein just fell apart in in a big tangle mess. I dont have a ball winder yet, so this is ver helpful. My husband just walked in and looked at the yarn mess and laughed and said that sucks.

I wish I had watched this earlier .. I just finished untangling a cord and what I have looks like two connected yarn balls because I was rollin from both ends 😂
I'm going to wrap them this way to one ball now . Your yarn is so beautiful and the ball looks ready pretty with crisscross design .
Thanks so much for making this video and explaining it so easily .

You are an angel💛 my Mams friend gave me a giant bag of her wool scraps cuz I mainly make small things and she does big things but a lot of it was unwound and I had no clue what to do! This is the 8th video I’ve watched on this and the first I’ve been able to understand and I just made my first tiny ball! Probably could have used a smaller center but live and learn

I tried this because I had to wash six skeins of RH yarn that I bought online and it arrived dirty. Using it out of the skein would have been impossible. This is the BEST winding method EVER. I didn't want to have a number of small balls, so I cut a piece of 1 inch PVC pipe about a foot long and put caps on each end so the yarn would not easily slip off. I wound all those skeins. Now I have Arnold's shoulders, :-) . I made three to four large balls from each skein. I have since used four of those balls in projects. Using them is the true proof of how well the winding method works. The yarn came out of the center with absolutely no problems. After all the time and trouble it took to wash those skeins, having this work so well was the high spot of my week. Thank you so much for sharing this information.

I do like the cake balls myself and now I can make my own!!! I liked the wrapping and turn tip, not only is the pattern that this forms fantastic for my OCD but how it ends up being a centre-pull is just 😘. I find it so annoying, like rip-my-undies annoying, when I'm winding the wool around a long tube and it catches, I'm literally like this emoji 😫. So this video is like my best tip/video for the week 👍👍👍

Thank you, Jennifer, for this great tutorial! Just what I needed! I've always rolled loose yarn into balls but wasn't ever really happy with them. I tried your method immediately after watching this tutorial today and my yarn cake came out amazing! I'm rolling the label and inserting it into the center of the cake, as others have suggested. Thank you again, Jennifer, for these helpful instructions! I have a yarn ball roller plus an Amish swift, but this method is perfect for caking the random left-over skeins of yarn, without dragging out the yarn ball roller and swift! Awesome!!

Thanks for this easy to follow tutorial and thanks to all the UA-camrs who left great tips. When I make my first cake, I'd like to use a mini rolling pin. Instead of carving slits, surely it'd be okay to stick the yarn across with a piece of tape? If this wouldn't cause a problem then near enough any cylindrical object could be used.
