  • This tutorial shows you how to make a 'yarn winder' from easily available materials. It's just a project I did for fun, but it does work pretty well for making my own centre-pull balls of knitting yarn :)

    You could also use the cardboard tubes from wax paper or aluminum foil, they are sturdier & you can skip the part of reinforcing from the inside.

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist 2 роки тому +4

      That was my immediate thought as well. :-) P.S. I have been saving some of those, and some cardboard spools from thread as well, because I do like how sturdy they are - I think this is the perfect use for them. :-)

    • @robertapearson3507
      @robertapearson3507 2 роки тому +12

      @@beth12svist -- just a note -- you don't want the roll to be too small in diameter. You will notice that most commercial ball winders have a fairly large centre to them. That is so that when you take the final ball off the winder, there is a good amount of space in the middle for the yarn to relax into, thus relieving any excess tension from the winding process. :)

    This is a great cheap alternative. I have been using a nostepinne (homemade) for making my balls of yarn, but also for a quicker way, I glued a plastic bobbin from the sewing machine to the bottom of a homemade spool made of tough cardboard tube from a cut tin foil roll with two round cardboard ends, and placed on my bobbin winder on my sewing machine, it works a dream to spin wool onto a spool quickly from a drop spindle :)

    I keep trying to think of what needs to be fixed so you don’t have to rotate the yarn by hand, maybe change the angle of the spool from 45 to 60 degrees.

    • @RokoleeDIY
      @RokoleeDIY  2 роки тому

      Yeah, I think experimenting with the angle would be the way forward. Maybe one day I'll come back to it!

    • @robertapearson3507
      @robertapearson3507 2 роки тому

      To get rid of rotating the yarn ball by hand, you will need a kind of cog wheel machine-type thing that turns the cardboard tube whilst the tube is rotating around. You will see what I mean if you analyse a ball winder to see the mechanism that makes it wind into a nice, perfect-looking cake. I am not sure that cardboard is up to that kind of precision. There may be a way of making the circular base (that holds the winding ball) a lot bigger so one could manually give it a turn every other rotation of the ball??? I don't know. I would have to have the "machine" in front of me to analyse the operation. It could be done, I'm sure. Just how, I'm not sure, at this point. I will leave it up to you to figure it out. I am an old woman with significant arthritis in my hands and not feeling up to constructing this machine. I will say, one tip, when using cardboard -- -- -- if you are making a "sandwich" of pieces, try to orient the ribs (inside the cardboard) of each piece at right angles to each other. That way, the strength of the sandwich is significantly increased. If you have all the ribs going the same way, the cardboard has a tendency to buckle along the lines of the ribs. Having the ribs at right angles reduces that possibility greatly. Sort of like how they make plywood. Hope you can figure out the mechanism to turn the ball spindle while the spindle is being turned by the machine. :)

    • @RokoleeDIY
      @RokoleeDIY  5 місяців тому

      I think the angles may be slightly off, but it's going to be impossible to get it spot on with cardboard unfortunately - because it is not solid, so it wobbles a bit. You could get the angle perfect with a material like wood, but obviously most people are not woodworkers. I hope it works well enough for your anyway :)

      😕, try useing a roll from paper towel,
      cut the desired hieght, cut a slit from top to bottom n make a gap. Useing the unused portion of paper towel cardboard insert n push between the gap n tape/glue/hot glue thus making it bigger around. You may have to add ribbing inside for sturdiness still. Make the gap an inch wider, mabe 1 1/2 inches wider.
