Wilson’s definition of genius is simplistic. He seems to be defining G-d when he goes on about geniuses never making a bad record or writing a bad song.
I think when Steven started producing them they got better definitely sonically. Wish him and Mikael would do another storm corrosion album. Porcupine tree also got heavier after Steven producing them. I’ve watched the making of damnation and deliverance so many times
As much as I love blackwater park I don’t think it’s worth the hype it gets. Personally I think the album before that “Still life” is a much better album, Better riffs & melodies, Very diverse and technical with a very somber and melancholic atmosphere which completely encapsulates with the concept of that album which in itself is beautiful. The reason BWP gets all the credit is because it was there breakthrough album, It was on a major label with worldwide distribution and that sent them off to worldwide domination you could say. Wilson’s hand in that album certainly helped and the production is top notch, creative and certainly not your run of the mill metal productions that was happening at the time. Mikeal himself has stated many times what I just said about BWP and even he doesn’t see much of a difference between that album and the one before. Don’t get me wrong I love BWP and everything Mikeal has ever written I just prefer “Still life”
We need to get Steven into King Gizzard. They’re the exact type of band he’s talking about, that can make any genre work for them and their personality still shines through.
I'm trying to compare what he's saying about the industry, fans etc. with Joe Jackson's career & things *he's said* about the same issues & without knowing the details of either, it's impossible. Joe was for some reason incredibly lucky & no record execs ever gave him any ultimatums. But that doesn't explain things like the popularity of Jumpin' Jive, the album _or_ the tour. It was something no one asked for or wanted, & it's not like he was a sex symbol or good singer. & he'd often yell at his own fans. That could be a part of Wilson's experience though. He could only know how he's irritated his fans by making himself accessible _to_ them. That itself can be a mistake. People idolize & *want* to idolize musicians. Treating them with respect can upset their semi-conscious wishes to elevate you. But I'm pissing in the wind here.
There are people who still want to engage with music on a deeper level, indeed. I'm one of those.... I love Steven Wilson's music and I'm really looking forward to listen to the new album.

I really enjoyed this conversation, and can totally relate to this guy. A musician I've never heard of btw, and now I'm looking forward to checking out both Opeth and Porcupine Tree, thanks to everyone who commented. I went to a Music Industry Arts college in the 90's and it was made clear to me with this statement: "You can do whatever it takes to make it, or be broke and be an artist." I went, "oh, I thought we were here how to learn how to support us as artists" but it was definitely the former, and it made my decision easy. I make music because I have been obsessed with it since I was young, not to be famous or make money or get attention. The idea of pandering in music makes me slightly nauseous and I feel good when I go to sleep at night that I have built my own world around my musical expression. I don't even like to play the same songs at shows! lol. And like Steven, I feel like "I've already done that, why would I repeat myself?" I like the idea of having the freedom to do whatever I want and I claim that freedom and never take it for granted. Thanks for this video and passionate comments, nice to know I still have a musical family out there that resonates with this mindset.

Somewhere around the 40:00 mark Steven says that the first album you fall in love with will always hold a special place in your heart. Definitely true, but PT’s latest album has completely blown me away and is actually now my favourite. It just goes to show how an artist can grow and how a fan can grow with them. But still… as a general rule I think he’s right 🤣

Love this comment. It's how I feel. Be true to yourself, and I feel you'll find an audience that recognizes that sincerity. Most artists striving for a "career" don't understand that most people are actually looking for something fresh and genuine. The arts are in a rut right now, trying to copy what's come before to stay "relevant" and I personally think most people are waiting, and will respond to the new.
Someone said to me years ago that you need a profession to fall back on, in order to "finance" your own musical journey and development. It's a hard truth for working class aspiring musicians, creators and performers.

I discovered Steven Wilson 4 years ago, Signify, and have been hooked since. Prog Rock is my favorite type of rock and I love that his music is engaging such as the great Prog Rock bands of the past i.e. Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Genesis, Kansas etc.

I could sit here and write a long paragraph on what and why I love Steve Wilson, but I won't bore you. I think he is the most interesting, and thought provoking artist in music. As well as being a true virtuoso guitarist. I'm now waiting for Lee Anderton to interview him on how he learned to play the guitar so well, and his instrument journey. I want to know how he is able to make the guitar sing like no other.

I am disappointed in a few of Steven Wilson's albums, but I respect his talent so much that I am not running away from him, just excited to see what is next.
Just love listening to Steve talking about ins and outs of music and creativity....so many of us creatives out there are failing everday, continuing drawing on our energies as much as we can because thats our passion. Talks like this give a lovely perspective on things. Great point about investing yourself into great music or any new music. Many are growers....or better still you grow with the music even if you did start off going 'wtf!' The many wtfs in my experience too, tend to be those moments you later realise required you to grow a bit. Great interview Rob.

Love Steven Wilson. I'm a year older than him and following his career has helped me keep an interest in new music. Other bands I've followed for decades still put out albums but their creative peak is long gone. Steven still excites & impresses with every new record.

The discussion remind me of bands like Arctic Monkeys that have changed completely their style and i think it has been refreshing for a rock/pop band to try something out of their success formula, but lots of people were just expecting a new AM album just for the nostalgia of what they felt listen to AM the first time.
I can say I'm so lucky that I could see and listen to Porcupine tree live on last 2 tours. Got last PT album on vinyl and looking forward to et more. we as fans should not let these great music die, and engage more ppl in to it. Great interview, thx for heaving Steven for us.

Disribution on so many platforms and to write and share feels so good to me, eventhough Im so minimal as I improvise almost everything I do Steven is absolutely the best. He is always fresh to my ears and at times I rabbit hole jazz artists, but with that said Steven Wilson always said LISTEN TO MUSIC. I listen to music as I did when I was young, checking artists, stats, and who is producing these projects. Very insightful because Steven is he has from experience holds his integrity on what he does ans that is why we get the product he writes ans produces. The world needs to know more about him, truly an artist of our TIMES. Blessings to Steven Wilson.
I completely agree with SW's contention that a listener's 'entry point' to a band's recorded catalogue is a sweet spot that the artist can never really surpass (for that listener). That sweet spot will be a different album for many different people. I have found that the initial exposure to that band's 'sound' makes an emotional impact, particularly if I really like it, and wires my brain a particular way which affects my experience with their other albums.
My entry point was "To The Bone" and more specifically "Pariah". Then I tried Insurgentes and the first track blew me away. For PT I was introduced with a leant CD of the "Stars Die" compilation, I loved that. Then he leant me Deadwing and I was fascinated by the difference, at first I didn't like it, but now I love it. He'd heard I like Floyd. I think though that his music is consistently good that I am discovering new favourites all time time. Current fave. is Normal live at Tilberg, that whole live set is amazing.
Prog rock fan since the early 70’s, only discovered Porcupine Tree a few month’s ago, wow what a discovery the PT music is brilliant, some of the best music ever! Really want to see PT live - come to Leeds sometime soon!😊
Played Leeds Uni years ago on (I think) the Blank Planet tour. And yes they were brilliant. Being a drummer couldn't take my eyes off Gavins drumming 😂

I do want to add, to the conversation about Spotify, algorithms and playlists, that the "Steven Wilson algorithm" that control my Spotify "radio" has made me discover SO many bands, and new bands to the genre, that I would've never found say 20 years ago! I've seen many interviews with Steven Wilson before and yet learned a lot of new things here. This is not just a Q&A or an interview, really. Rather, a conversation where we could watch both of you develop, and even discover, new thoughts and ideas.
I'd love to interview Steven Wilson one day to give another perspective on the music industry. I'm currently 17 years old and starting out as a musician, it's hard. But to be fair it's always been hard and it's always been about commerical succes or else you'll fade into the darkness. There are so so so many bands from the 60's and 70's with decent or even amazing music that just didn't make it. Cause even back then commercial success would mean the band could survive. There were still bands around that time that were too experimental and weren't pick up. And today with spotify, the algorithm can learn the genres you like and you can find artists through discover weekly. And of course you can search for them yourself, just type in a genre and maybe a year, and bam there's so many playlists with amazing artists. It's how I found Porcupine Tree, The Pinneapple Thief, Marillion, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, Long Distance Calling, Al Stewart, Styx, Starcastle, Anathema, Naxatras, Liquify, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gilgamesh, The Aristocrats, Brand X, Weather Report, Mahavisnu Orchestra, T-SQUARE, Casiopea, and many many more, both obscure and well known artists. So I'd love to sit down with him and just talk about music, bands and albums with him and learn from his experiences.
a really excellent and thought-provoking interview. I could never stop thinking about Devin Townsend, who also fitted most of Steven's decriptions of artistic integrety and following ones own passions. They are very much alike in this respect and not coincidentially are among the few artists I by records of without second-guessing.
Love this interview. I've been a fan for about 30 years, when I first saw No-man supporting friends of mine at the Marquee. Really looking forward to new album. I'm a Metal fan, a Prog fan, but what I've always loved about what tge music Steven appears on is the story telling, which is why I'm not rge greatest fan of the Future Bites. But it looks like the new Album, The Harmony Codex, is back to story telling. I will always be interested in whatever Steven does, and whilst I fully understand the idea of wanting the next In Absentia or The Raven who Refused to Sing, I am eager to hear change and moving into new areas. Steven always does a great interview, even when I agree little with what he is saying (that happened a few times with the last album). Looking forward to the next Steven Wilson installment on this particular channel.
All it took for me to become absolutely mesmerized was a song that I accidentally stumbled upon a couple months ago "Arriving somewhere but not here", since then I listen to them every day.
I liked his thoughts on how an artist is doomed to make you feel like he/she did in their seminal record, and how he praises artists who, knowing that, try to bring you to new territories. I don't like all of his recent albums but I truly respect his view.

Excellent interview. Or rather, a conversation between 2 people who share the same passion. Even with a small snot in his nose, Steve can appear extremely nonchalant and intelligent. Huge fan.
I like Steven Wilson because he is one of the rare artists who manages to surprise me with each album and if he started to always do the same thing with each album, to always redo In Absentia or The Future Bites for example, that would not I would simply not be interested in it at all. There, I like the fact that Steven released an album like Hand Cannot Erase, then To The Bone then The Future Bites then The Harmony Codex. With each announcement of the release of a new Steven Wilson album, I always wonder what musical direction he will take and that's what I like about this artist. I realize that the artists I prefer are those who manage to constantly surprise me.
Was just thinking recently, I always embellish music in my mind when I think about it and mentally replay it, except with Steven Wilson's music because it's already so perfectly realized

When I first discovered Porcupine Tree I was somewhat disappointed that I had not discovered them earlier and could not understand why i never heard of them. It is now inconceivable that so many people are missing out. Poor souls.
I think Genesis falls into this category of musicians as well, they went from kind of folk rock to prog rock / album rock then to pop rock and progressive pop and mixed all kinds of genres whilst doing so. Phil Collins also switched a lot with his solo albums (at least before Dance Into The Light).
My gateway into the vast world of SW was No-Man's "love lies" since being a huge Japan fan, JBK playing on that record made me pay attention. But In Absentia sealed the deal. The last PT record was fantastic too. Hand That Cannot Erase is also a fave SW solo album.
What an amazing interview. Well done Mr Moore, taking the best out of Mr Wilson. Prince was closer to Genius than anyone else in music industry, and he did make some albums that are not good. Steven is soooooooooooooooo good though....Very underated...Either he is modest or he doesnt understand how good he is....I took the plane to fly from Greece to Amsterdam to see him and Co when they were back last year., Will do the same when he announces his new tour...
Love the discussion on how do you continue to please the fans while also not remain stagnant and or stay creative and explore boundaries. With the current news of Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater and all of the discussion around that fact and also listening to a lot of Rick Beato and his breakdowns of Bands and what made them great. Has had ne contemplating the same questions. Thinking back at the bands that I admire and have followed throughout the decades or watched fade into the past. I think in my opinion what makes a great band that will have longevity is to obviously have a great lineup of talent and put out great songs, but I think you have to be able to either be able to bring what the band is going through on a personal level out through the music that the fans can relate to or do so by what the culture is going through at that time. Then be able to do so as time goes on and keep up with cultural evolution while also evolving as a band whether it be getting better on one's instrument, trying new approaches in style, maybe incorporating more or maybe less to the overall sound. It reminds me of watching Queensryche's "Building Empires" video when it came out after their success after their Empire tour. They made the point during the interview that the challenge ahead was going to be to still grow and evolve. To not become to comfortable in the success and remain complacent. If one was to listed to Operation Mindcrime, To Empire, then Promise Land, all three are very different but in my opinion great in their own way.

I like the idea of having the freedom to do whatever I want and I claim that freedom and never take it for granted. Somewhere around the 40:00 mark Steven says that the first album you fall in love with will always hold a special place in your heart. Definitely true, but PT’s latest album has completely blown me away and is actually now my favourite. It just goes to show how an artist can grow and how a fan can grow with them.

Love this comment. It's how I feel. Be true to yourself, and I feel you'll find an audience that recognizes that sincerity. Most artists striving for a "career" don't understand that most people are actually looking for something fresh and genuine. The arts are in a rut right now, trying to copy what's come before to stay "relevant" and I personally think most people are waiting, and will respond to the new.
Someone said to me years ago that you need a profession to fall back on, in order to "finance" your own musical journey and development. It's a hard truth for working class aspiring musicians, creators and performers.

I discovered Steven Wilson 4 years ago, Signify, and have been hooked since. Prog Rock is my favorite type of rock and I love that his music is engaging such as the great Prog Rock bands of the past i.e. Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Genesis, Kansas etc.

1:31 The fact that Porcupine Tree got dropped after Deadwing (2005) should be a badge of honor for Porcupine Tree, considering where the music industry was in 2005.
I could sit here and write a long paragraph on what and why I love Steve Wilson, but I won't bore you. I think he is the most interesting, and thought provoking artist in music. As well as being a true virtuoso guitarist. I'm now waiting for Lee Anderton to interview him on how he learned to play the guitar so well, and his instrument journey. I want to know how he is able to make the guitar sing like no other.

Just love listening to Steve talking about ins and outs of music and creativity....so many of us creatives out there are failing everday, continuing drawing on our energies as much as we can because thats our passion. Talks like this give a lovely perspective on things. Great point about investing yourself into great music or any new music. Many are growers....or better still you grow with the music even if you did start off going 'wtf!' The many wtfs in my experience too, tend to be those moments you later realise required you to grow a bit. Great interview Rob.

Love Steven Wilson. I'm a year older than him and following his career has helped me keep an interest in new music. Other bands I've followed for decades still put out albums but their creative peak is long gone. Steven still excites & impresses with every new record.

The discussion remind me of bands like Arctic Monkeys that have changed completely their style and i think it has been refreshing for a rock/pop band to try something out of their success formula, but lots of people were just expecting a new AM album just for the nostalgia of what they felt listen to AM the first time.

Disribution on so many platforms and to write and share feels so good to me, eventhough Im so minimal as I improvise almost everything I do Steven is absolutely the best. He is always fresh to my ears and at times I rabbit hole jazz artists, but with that said Steven Wilson always said LISTEN TO MUSIC. I listen to music as I did when I was young, checking artists, stats, and who is producing these projects. Very insightful because Steven is he has from experience holds his integrity on what he does ans that is why we get the product he writes ans produces. I completely agree with SW's contention that a listener's 'entry point' to a band's recorded catalogue is a sweet spot that the artist can never really surpass (for that listener). That sweet spot will be a different album for many different people. I have found that the initial exposure to that band's 'sound' makes an emotional impact, particularly if I really like it, and wires my brain a particular way which affects my experience with their other albums.

Well captured. This has been my experience with bands as well…time and again.
My entry point was "To The Bone" and more specifically "Pariah". Then I tried Insurgentes and the first track blew me away. For PT I was introduced with a leant CD of the "Stars Die" compilation, I loved that. Then he leant me Deadwing and I was fascinated by the difference, at first I didn't like it, but now I love it. He'd heard I like Floyd. I think though that his music is consistently good that I am discovering new favourites all time time. Current fave. is Normal live at Tilberg, that whole live set is amazing.
Prog rock fan since the early 70’s, only discovered Porcupine Tree a few month’s ago, wow what a discovery the PT music is brilliant, some of the best music ever! Really want to see PT live - come to Leeds sometime soon!😊

What a fantastic interview!
I'd love to interview Steven Wilson one day to give another perspective on the music industry. I'm currently 17 years old and starting out as a musician, it's hard. But to be fair it's always been hard and it's always been about commerical succes or else you'll fade into the darkness. There are so so so many bands from the 60's and 70's with decent or even amazing music that just didn't make it. Cause even back then commercial success would mean the band could survive. There were still bands around that time that were too experimental and weren't pick up. And today with spotify, the algorithm can learn the genres you like and you can find artists through discover weekly. And of course you can search for them yourself, just type in a genre and maybe a year, and bam there's so many playlists with amazing artists. It's how I found Porcupine Tree, The Pinneapple Thief, Marillion, Transatlantic, Liquid Tension Experiment, Long Distance Calling, Al Stewart, Styx, Starcastle, Anathema, Naxatras, Liquify, Jean-Luc Ponty, Gilgamesh, The Aristocrats, Brand X, Weather Report, Mahavisnu Orchestra, T-SQUARE, Casiopea, and many many more, both obscure and well known artists. So I'd love to sit down with him and just talk about music, bands and albums with him and learn from his experiences.
You're interviews with Steven are better than Beato's. That's saying something. Great questions and excellent work keeping him engaged.
a really excellent and thought-provoking interview. I could never stop thinking about Devin Townsend, who also fitted most of Steven's decriptions of artistic integrety and following ones own passions. They are very much alike in this respect and not coincidentially are among the few artists I by records of without second-guessing.
Love this interview. I've been a fan for about 30 years, when I first saw No-man supporting friends of mine at the Marquee. Really looking forward to new album. I'm a Metal fan, a Prog fan, but what I've always loved about what tge music Steven appears on is the story telling, which is why I'm not rge greatest fan of the Future Bites. But it looks like the new Album, The Harmony Codex, is back to story telling. I will always be interested in whatever Steven does, and whilst I fully understand the idea of wanting the next In Absentia or The Raven who Refused to Sing, I am eager to hear change and moving into new areas. Steven always does a great interview, even when I agree little with what he is saying (that happened a few times with the last album). Looking forward to the next Steven Wilson installment on this particular channel.

All it took for me to become absolutely mesmerized was a song that I accidentally stumbled upon a couple months ago "Arriving somewhere but not here", since then I listen to them every day.
I liked his thoughts on how an artist is doomed to make you feel like he/she did in their seminal record, and how he praises artists who, knowing that, try to bring you to new territories. I don't like all of his recent albums but I truly respect his view.

Excellent interview. Or rather, a conversation between 2 people who share the same passion. Even with a small snot in his nose, Steve can appear extremely nonchalant and intelligent. Huge fan.
I like Steven Wilson because he is one of the rare artists who manages to surprise me with each album and if he started to always do the same thing with each album, to always redo In Absentia or The Future Bites for example, that would not I would simply not be interested in it at all.
There, I like the fact that Steven released an album like Hand Cannot Erase, then To The Bone then The Future Bites then The Harmony Codex.
With each announcement of the release of a new Steven Wilson album, I always wonder what musical direction he will take and that's what I like about this artist. I realize that the artists I prefer are those who manage to constantly surprise me.

When I first discovered Porcupine Tree I was somewhat disappointed that I had not discovered them earlier and could not understand why i never heard of them. It is now inconceivable that so many people are missing out. Poor souls.

I think Genesis falls into this category of musicians as well, they went from kind of folk rock to prog rock / album rock then to pop rock and progressive pop and mixed all kinds of genres whilst doing so. Phil Collins also switched a lot with his solo albums (at least before Dance Into The Light).

What an amazing interview. Well done Mr Moore, taking the best out of Mr Wilson. Prince was closer to Genius than anyone else in music industry, and he did make some albums that are not good. Steven is soooooooooooooooo good though....Very underated...Either he is modest or he doesnt understand how good he is....I took the plane to fly from Greece to Amsterdam to see him and Co when they were back last year., Will do the same when he announces his new tour...

Love the discussion on how do you continue to please the fans while also not remain stagnant and or stay creative and explore boundaries. With the current news of Portnoy rejoining Dream Theater and all of the discussion around that fact and also listening to a lot of Rick Beato and his breakdowns of Bands and what made them great. Has had ne contemplating the same questions. Thinking back at the bands that I admire and have followed throughout the decades or watched fade into the past. I think in my opinion what makes a great band that will have longevity is to obviously have a great lineup of talent and put out great songs, but I think you have to be able to either be able to bring what the band is going through on a personal level out through the music that the fans can relate to or do so by what the culture is going through at that time. Then be able to do so as time goes on and keep up with cultural evolution while also evolving as a band whether it be getting better on one's instrument, trying new approaches in style, maybe incorporating more or maybe less to the overall sound. It reminds me of watching Queensryche's "Building Empires" video when it came out after their success after their Empire tour. They made the point during the interview that the challenge ahead was going to be to still grow and evolve. To not become to comfortable in the success and remain complacent. If one was to listed to Operation Mindcrime, To Empire, then Promise Land, all three are very different but in my opinion great in their own way.

I can't than you enough for doing this. Steven never played shallow a lot even on the first tour, if at all. EDIT: Ok it looks too guts got it figured out before the end of the interview.
