Summer of 1984, the Summer Olympics were taking place in Los Angeles. For the very end of closing ceremony, Lionel came out and performed this song, even writing an extra set of lyrics for the occasion. The song, and the party, seemed to literally last All Night Long.
The video for this song id one of the best from the 80s, in my opinion. The video for the dong Dancin' On The Ceiling is really cool. Lionel Richie produced some really good party music in the 80s. Watch the video for this song and react to the video for the other song. You will love them both.
Really enjoyed ya'll's reaction to Lionel. His catalog of music is deep. When you consider the songs he wrote while with the Commodores and his solo career, as well as other artists it's amazing! I went to college at Tuskegee when the Commodores were there. My wife who I met in college is from Tuskegee. She grew up with Lionel and Ronald LaPread another member of the Commodores. It was nothing to see them in the cafeteria or on the yard. On Friday nights they were the house band at the Elks Lodge. Lionel didn't sing back then. Lived in Tuskegee after college and got to know them and hang out with them. Those were really great times back then. Always really enjoy ya'll's reactions! Thanks for the fun laughter!
I saw Lionel Richie in 2000 in Louisville Kentucky he opened up for Tina Turner. That concert was so much fun. I went with my brother. Everybody was dancing and having a blast, Good times. Confession. At that time I did not know that Lionel Richie was part of the commodores. You should have seen my face when he started singing Brick House.WHAA! I lost my mind.Jackpot!
He's one of the ones that's even better live because you get a flawless live performance. Seems auto tune has kind of ruined that for a lot of modern artist an live performances. I've walked out before they sounded so bad.
Lionel has another really fun one - Dancing on the Ceiling. But you MUST watch the video - because it actually shows them dancing on the ceiling. Very cool visual - and it's a great party song. Hugs from Canada!
80's baby here born in 1980 and I loved this as a little 4 yr old or whatever year it came out. Anyway my uncle's had MTV playing all day and when this came on I would stop and have to go and put my face 6 inches from the tube lol. I was enamored by this song.
Such a fun song and you can't help but move to it! Where I live we have an event called "Dancing in the streets" every summer, where everyone hangs out drinking and dancing literally in the streets downtown and this song is always played at least once!
It sounds like calyso dance. Yes is very Caribean...Bahamas, St. Thomas, Jamaica, even Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico where I'm from. This song only needs a Steel band to complete the party. I remember when this son was released, People were dancing at discotheque like it was 70's even when this song belongs to 80's. It is so much fun. I feel like dancing on the sand at the Beach because i remember doing it so. You are the sun you are the rain has the same vibes of this one. Also Lionel Richie's.
Wife here..This is my childhood ...Lionel Ritchie was HUGE..EVERYWHERE..I wore this record out..(And found out my usual metalhead husband did too)!..AWESOME!!
Lionel can do it all!!🎶 For a little slower, heartwrenching song,(I wallowed around in agony to this song during a bad break-up👀) please do "Still"🎶💙🎵🎶
1984 was such a great year in music. Lionel Richie's "Can't Slow Down" album, Prince with "Purple Rain", the "Footloose" soundtrack, Van Halen's "1984", and the comeback of Tina Turner with her "Private Dancer" album. Check out the year-end top 20. So many classic songs.
Lionel Ritchie was a hit making machine from mid 70's on. I still have a photo of Lionel Ritchie and my buddy that I took backstage at a Commodores concert
Y'all have to understand how big this song was when it came out. It transcended genre and age. Even if it wasn't really your thing, nobody hated it and it was everywhere. When Lionel Richie left the Commodores, it could have been the end of The Commodores and his solo career may never have taken off but they both put out their biggest hits after the split. I'd love to see y'all react to The Commodores song, Nightshift.
When this came out, all night long was no problem. It's a bit different now! I get to about 1 in the morning and that's it, I'm bushed! Mind you, I will have been going strong for 5 hours! At 73, the batteries go for a good while and then just run down.
You know one of the best parts of your reactions is watching you young folk discover these timeless tunes from back in the day keep up the great work ya'll
Lionel Richie started with the Commodores. Made some nice music. Then he left and became just Lionel Richie. And we then found out just how he was the driving force of the Commodores. A brilliant writer who had a real knack for knowing how to make a song something that would run through your head all day. But this one had this beat to it, which doesn't just come out of the sky; it comes out of a very creative mind. I've heard it described as a reggae feel, and I love the song. I like it every time I hear it and I can say that about only a few songs.
Fun fun fun song! Kept everyone on their feet with a smile on their faces all night long back in the day. Album of the year also. Watch the video if you can.
Yes island Caribbean, but not reggae. I guess ya’ll actually just seeing lyric video? If you see the official video, you get a great feel for the vibe, even though the audio recording is already strong. I believe this was out around the same time as Stevie’s Do I Do, which had a great video as well.
Y’all should have watched the video to this song. The video is just as classic as the song. Actually the video helps you enjoy the song even more! Why do you two never want to watch the official video to these classic songs?
I guess so that youtube will less likely block their videos. And I remember Asia mentioned in one of their reactions, that details of dated music videos have a tendency to distract her, and will kinda ruin her appreciation of the song.
If you could be arrested for dancing in the car while listening to music, I would still be in jail for jammin to this song. It is a joyful piece of music.
This is a different song for Lionel Ritchie. This was used in a Miami Vice episode, and is considered one of the best songs for Miami Vice. However, the best song has to be Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight.”
Let's not getting ridiculous now know one was as big as Michael Jackson in the 80's. This album came out in 1984. With Purple Rain, Born in the USA, Tina Turner, private Dancer. Cultural Club. Wham make it big. Madonna first album. All were in Michael Jackson shadow in the 80's.
Some songs are timeless and just transcend race language religion and whatever else you want to throw in. I can pull up in my truck banging this anywhere anytime and people are going to be entranced by it
What?? We doing some Lionel Richie? Hello? Wait, that's one of his songs lol. "Dancing On The Ceiling" "You Are" "Say You, Say Me" "Truly" "Ballerina Girl" are some of his greatest hits. He is so iconic!
I feel like Lionel doesn't get his due. He's been kind of forgotten. And between his work w the Commodores and his solo career, there is so much to love and admire. He is a great talent.
Lionel Richie sang this song to end the closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, with the field full of the world's athletes all dancing away. It was wonderful.
Its like you guys were at one of my wedding gigs, I used to DJ and after the crowd had a couple drinks I would play this song then Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" and then to keep them on the dance floor I would follow this up with M.J. "Billie Jean" a good time for all! Keep up the great music!
My 12yr old self listening to this song. Mom walks in. Mom: "What are you listening to?" :) Me: "Lionel Richie. All Night Long." Mom: (long pause) Mom: "WHAT are you listening to?!?!?!" Me: "He's talking about singing all night long. What?" Mom: "Uh huh...."
Lionel Richie, true legend...pls react to Butterfly by Crazy Town and you won't regret it...lol...kept on watching your reactions...Holla from the FSM - Pohnpei State...Peace

This is literally the same memory I have of this song - his performance went on all night! lol
Oh yes you're right! I didn't remember this!
One of the best songs from Lionel Richie, and one of the best party songs of the 80s!
Straight up 80's feel good music, nothing more, and nothing less, great tune.
Lionel Richie pure class!!
The video for this song id one of the best from the 80s, in my opinion. The video for the dong Dancin' On The Ceiling is really cool. Lionel Richie produced some really good party music in the 80s. Watch the video for this song and react to the video for the other song. You will love them both.
was on my way home from boot camp at Parris Island S.C.. This album was my Walkman soundtrack all the way back to New York. Feb. '84.
Like Lionel Richie said that's the way we used to play back in the day in the '80s 😁✌️
In the 80s this was my favourite driving song
Gloria Estefan, Grace Jones, Whitney and Phil Collins, my Dads car only held 4 tapes in the dash (Ford Sierra)
This was a HUGE hit back in the day. Check out Lionel's "Running With The Night" if you haven't already.
Lionel Richie, truly a national treasure.
In the 80's whenever you heard this song playing there was surely a party somewhere nearby.

A friend of mine went to see him and said it was hands down one of the best shows she’d ever been to!
@@HiddenCharmhome He definitely puts on a great show - I saw him with Chaka Khan opening for him about 10 years ago and it was a blast.
Saw the Commodores in 1977. Fire!
@@looneygardener Wow so cool!

This was No1 in the UK ...takes me back ..😢You are my destiny ..you are my one and only ...that's a good song too .
Always loved Lionel Richie, from the commodores to his incredible solo career......super talent!
Me too,Quinton !!! I remember the video for this song, had some break dancers in it.This tune is still SLAMMING !!! LOL.
Man this song brings a flood of memories from my youth.
The instrumentation is quite remarkable. Great studio engineering and effort. Lionel hit the big time with this track. HUGE worldwide acclaim.
Love this song. Another one I love too is whose that girl by madonna
Love this song! You right! We used to have this song playing at the beach, Friday nights! SO fun! Lionel is the best!
You guys must watch the Video. Fyi. Shelia E played Percussion on this song. The Congas, Cowbell, etc ..
I like the positive vibe of the 80s pop songs that put you in a good mood. And the melody will stuck in your head ...all night long...😜
Lionel has another really fun one - Dancing on the Ceiling. But you MUST watch the video - because it actually shows them dancing on the ceiling. Very cool visual - and it's a great party song. Hugs from Canada!
he got that from a fred astaire film 1951 royal wedding.
A major party 🎉
I love A lot of Lionel Ritchie when he was part of The Commodores. SAIL ON, STILL, JUST TO BE CLOSE TO YOU, EASY are all faves of mine.
Great picks! I love "Say You, Say Me", and "Endless Love" 💕💕💕

I had friends at the '84 Olympics - You're right this is a SERIOUS party song :-) They had a ball!
It's a great video!!!!!! Some of the most iconic break dancers of the time!

Same here. I was about 8. I LOVED this song and still do.
Definitely my favorite Lionel Richie song. 👍
Lionel Ritchie was a hit making machine from mid 70's on. I still have a photo of Lionel Ritchie and my buddy that I took backstage at a Commodores concert
Everywhere was a dance floor when this came on. No matter where you were.
Lionel's been around a long time! How can you go wrong with his music!
This is one of the happiest songs ever.

Lionel Richie and Bartles and James, Come 80s folk gime a what what🤠😎
Seriously the official videos are the thing to watch. Think about it, that's how the artists wanted their work presented to the world.

Great song another 80s summer jam is Babyface-it’s no crime the bass and beat in that song is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
In the early 80s Ritchie was perhaps even a bigger a star than Michael Jackson. He was hugely popular.

If you find a chance, check out his duet of "Lady" with Kenny Rogers. Beautiful.
🤘🏻😎SAIL ON by the COMMODORES is KOOL 🍻
One small correction, it was the opening ceremony in '84. To this day Richie's segment was the best ever.
What?? We doing some Lionel Richie? Hello? Wait, that's one of his songs lol. "Dancing On The Ceiling" "You Are" "Say You, Say Me" "Truly" "Ballerina Girl" are some of his greatest hits. He is so iconic!

If it’s a party tune you want, have yourself a listen to Al Jarreau’s Roof Garden.
His pipes are smoother than mink puppies on a velvet rug.
The video to this song was cool too.
Uncle Lionel can sing!
Plus you just listened to a short version of the song. Watch original video, y'all are missing out FR
The video for this is amazing!
