“I cared very deeply about things that were scary and weird [...] and now I’m gay” felt that one deeply
Honestly.. I felt personally attacked
She is so relatable.
YESSSSS perfect!
Now wait a minute, I watch scary and weird shit all the time. I thought you're only gay if you liked the Slender Man movie.
Where you bent over at the time?
"period piece kid's on bikes" is absolutely a genre and it's so pervasive
The Smosh video "kids on bikes" did a good job covering the more known ones
I can’t wait for “period piece kids with jetpacks” to become a thing.
Taylor Goodman the new ghostbusters trailer came out and boy you’re right! I think it started with the first season of stranger things with that retro feel and it’s been over done now.
There's actually an ttrpg that's called "kids on bikes" that's about playing through these stories.
I never got why they didn’t just make it an anthology movie.
That would've been a better idea, more time to develop each story and scare rather than mashing them together
I agree but that probably doesnt sell as a major studio film :/
With different directors?? That would have been dope
Guillermo del Toro said anthologies are always brought down by their worst stories instead of being remembered for their best ones. Not a great reason, but there was one.
@@dmitryboardman9762 wow I honestly couldn't disagree more. V/H/S is pretty much a classic now almost entirely off that alien girl thing story and ive heard many people say its the only part they like but thats all they need.
"I like you, we're probably really scary and weird, and now I'm gay"
SAME
Manic 🏳️🌈 never heard my life summed up so perfectly
110% same
Someone needs to make that into a gif because that's such a mood.
Can confirm, this is accurate.
why is this me :D
(Paraphrased) "Cool creature designs. Scary moments. Period setting wasted. Script is very bad. Screenplay is very bad. Directing is mostly good. Editing is atrocious. So basically it's a horror movie."
HOLY SHIT SHOTS FIRED
Tommy Derp The editing and cinematography during the Pale Lady scene was really good and effective though imo. It reminds me of something out of Nightmare on Elm Street or Ju-On.
@@troin3925 It was definitely a standout from the rest.
_Pioneers used to entertain themselves by telling scary stories. At night they might gather in somebody’s cabin, or around a fire, and see who could scare the others the most._
*~ Alvin Schwartz*
I read somewhere the creatures were around 90% practical effects; they may have looked off but most of the time that was a physical creation! 😬 I loved that tidbit.
The Jangly Man would have been far scarier if he wasn’t masked with CGI
@@jonathanburleson9234 He was mostly not CGI though! He was a contortionist! They did CGI to have the bits come together etc.
Yes! I love practical effects!!!
9
Lots of movies use practical effects and then put a bajillion filters over it that make it look like shit. That's what happened with the ghost in MAMA.
this video is proof that the movie would be 2x spookier if it was in black and white
It's not?
It would be 4 times spookier if it was a silent movie with royalty free stock music
The slithery Dee he came from the sea he ate all the others but he didn’t eat me
The slithery Dee he came from the sea he ate all the others but he didn’t eat *sluurp*
This scared me so bad when I was young
My grandpa used to recite that one to me when I was really little, like 4 or 5, and it used to scare me SO fucking bad that I put my hands over my ears whenever he started lmaoooo
I was filled with SO much dread when I was seven and saw that poem in the book, but now I look back on it with a kinda bittersweet nostalgia :')
In conclusion we all loved scary stories and now we are all gay
Accurate.
I wish :( The demands of my adult penis turned out to be rather boring, though. For what it's worth, I AM still weird and scary.
we're not all gay
but i *am* gay
dominoesandtin Oh no. I’m not gay. Sorry guys.
I was expecting your intro to just be "movies! What are they?"
I expected „Movies! Who needs 'em“ and I don’t even know what that would’ve been a refrence to
i SNORTED at how they shoehorned in The Dream
like out of nowhere curly boy is like "GUYS WE'RE AT A HOSPITAL AND I KEEP HAVING THIS SCARY DREAM ABOUT A LADY IN THE HOSPITAL AND I DIDN'T FEEL THE NEED TO BRING THIS UP UNTIL WE ARE AT THE DOOR OF THE HOSPITAL"
He actually talked about the dream in the scene before, when they were at the old woman's house and yes that was weird but he did say it and then the other kids just kinda FORCED HIM TO GO EVEN THOUGH HE TOLD THEM ABOUT THE DREAM
@@whatever-qx9wx I COMPLETELY MISSED THAT omg I was too busy screaming over the mystical black woman trope
@@whatever-qx9wx Still not good writing, should have been established much earlier. Same with the Janglyman being a story that the main dude was told as a kid, they literally don't bring it up until right before the Janglyman appears.
I really wish it had just been an anthology film. If they didn’t keep having to serve the needs of a pretty lame through-plot they could’ve really dedicated serious resources to building an actual atmosphere.
HARD AGREE. That's what i assumed it was.
EXACTLY. It would have been sooo much better
Something in the vein of Trick r Treat. A series of loosely intertwined, terrifying tales set in a single night or week, and environment. Possibly a town.
If not, then a story will interplay with another by introducing the next mc or "victim" during or at the end of the events of the current, or preceeding, story across a wider array of settings.
Edit: spelling.
@@futtynucker5278 I was thinking more tales of Halloween
@@michealvega1373 So, pure anthology. Title sequence, etc. That's good too.
THAT TRANS PENTAGRAM TATTOO IS EVERYTHING
"and now Im gay" is how all my life stories end
Also how they begin, probably.
Imagine if this was an anthology film, but all the stories are tied together by one character who is travelling and documenting these situations...
And that person *has* to be Zack Bagans.
yes. please.
From the genius mind of Guillermo Del Toro: Megamind
Megamind was amazing, and del Toro is a true visionary :)
@@halfpintrr Megamind still is amazing and Puss in Boots, the other Dreamworks movie Del Toro worked on, is pretty good too
@@alexisyoung4555 He was a creative consultant on 2 and an Executive Producer on the third one and Rise of the Guardians
this movie was very run of the mill. a mill that's poisoning the town's water supply.
Alright Erin Brockovich, we will just hope it wasn't a genotoxic carcinogen this time.
Well played 👏👏👏😹
BEDAZZLE THOSE SKULLS BABY
GLITTER THEM UP
"However, uhm, because there isn't a god someone has decided to adapt Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark into a feature film"
I literally said "I love her so fucking much" out loud
As someone who always read those books in the elementary school library while other kids were out at recess, i feel like a mini-series/tv series that stays pretty... true to book would be AMAZING and i would genuinely love to see it, but yeah this movie flopped hella hard.
i know this would've literally never been made but these stories would've been made a great series of short films.
Nyx is so cute, especially when she said "Is the movie sick??"
Writer: "guys I lost the story."
Everyone else: "The what?"
Writer: "The... I don't know what was it?"
Everyone: "Huh what, huh?"
Wholesome memory I have of the book: I read it and it’s sequels to my van driver who drove me to and from school when I was in elementary school
I love how you're like, Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark is terrifying and now I'm gay! Coz honestly, same.
"And now I'm gay and I have a hair in my mouth." May, 2019
I can't believe May is critiquing a movie that she's the star of. The absolute gall.
I thought the same thing lol
"...I was a different person after that. ...and now I'm gay."
😂😂 Girl, same.
I got a monochromatic ad for this vid. That was nice.😊
I've never read any of the "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" books, but the lights reflecting from your glasses kinda make you look like your eyes are glowing when in the right angle and that's a little bit spooky.
just another example of something that probably shouldn't have been adapted into a feature length film that probably shouldn't have.
"why it edited like that" i died. god this makes me wanna see it so i Understand
The first video I ever watched from you was your scary stories to tell in the dark retrospective thing. This is so surreal to see how far you've come since then. I'm so glad I've been able to keep with you for so long. Keep being your awesome self May!
Honestly, when I first heard that "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" was getting adapted, I thought it was going to be a Netflix series. I didn't think that it was going to be a feature length film. It saddens me that the story/stories didn't have much in them, since you don't really see anthology films released in theaters anymore... One big example that comes to mind is Creepshow. I love that movie. Apparently, that new horror streaming service, Shudder, has a reboot coming and I'm kind of excited for it. I personally don't have a big nostalgic feeling when it comes to Scary Stories, but I do have one for horror comics like Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, and Haunt of Fear. I grew up on those as well as the TV-show. Creepshow (1982) really embodies the feeling of those comics, and from what I'm hearing, I think this movie would have benefited from embodying either something more like Creepshow but made for PG-13 audiences in a film, or just faithfully made Scary Stories, but making it into a limited series on a streaming service, like Netflix/Hulu/Shudder.
Harold is a twunk
"and now i'm gay" mood
I like your message here! In adaptation, maybe rather than focusing on strictly visuals and character names and plots, the most important thing is to ask "Why did the original mean so much? How did it make us feel? What can we make that can reach that same level?"
It's great to see you being so happy, wish you all the best. I really enjoy your reviews they are amazing. When I will be able to afford it I will happily support you on patreon, sorry I cannot yet 😕
Loving the intro! Also "scary and weird... And now I'm GAY" is big mood
This reminds me of the book I read as a kid called “Encyclopedia Horrifica”. I still have it and occasionally look through it. It reminds me of where my love of the macabre came from. Good job as always!
In seven months of hindsight, you do have to give them props for somehow finding kid/teen actors who weren't in Stranger Things or IT.
"So basically it's a horror movie..."
me: So basically hahahah it's a horror movie hahaheheheh
Nyx: you should subscribe
me: yeah I should *subscribes*
Nyx: you should like this video
me: *likes the video*
Binging Nyx fears videos like it is going out of style today.. And gotta say I was a Hiding under the covers avoiding bedtime with a flashlight kid and I read this at the age of about 6, By that point I had seen Child's play, nightmares on Elm street and most Fridays of the 13th variety. There is something about the imagination that I have always found way more creepy than any gory scene or suspenseful build-up.
Yoooo I’m loving the intro music ❤️ ALSO WHEN DID YOUR HAIR GET SO LONG AH SO NIICCEEE : D
"he magically makes the guy throw up scarecrow juice until he become scarecrow
THAT'S HOW SCARECROWS ARE MADE!"
Me: HAhahahahahahahahah! I really need to see this movie
ngl the art from the books is still a huge inspiration for me as an artist. stuff changed my life. and now im gay
Might I suggest invasion of the road weinies? It’s horror that surprisingly haunts me to this day
The music you've been using for your openings lately kicks all of my ass.
Oooooh I love the tattoo on your chest
Quite a bit older than you so my go to’s for reading were Creepy and Eerie magazines. Forever shaped my life in a positive way. 😁 Great channel btw. I absolutely LUV horror.
one of the jumpscares got my friend so bad that he dropped his entire cup of soda :(
I really regret that I did not encounter these books when I was a kid. I have a feeling I would have had a similar horrified but elated reaction. I had similar experiences with other morbid art I was unprepared for but changed my life. Shame about the movie.
I just love your movie reviews. Your hot takes are always on point
I had such interest in the concept of the physical "Scary Stories" book being a spooky threat within the film canon, since it would add a little extra magic for kids reading the books for the first time. Or at least tie in well with a special edition print run that has a couple flourishes similar to whatever the film-version of the book looked like. (Less in the capitalism sense and more in the "this could encourage more folks to read the books" sense.)
She said: M O V I E S
So a little context, me and my brother are basically each others best and only friends. We did everything together including scaring the shit out of each other by reading these stories aloud extremely late at night when we were young. Right? Right. Well I just had my second child and he came to visit me in the hospital and we got to talking about garbage fire horror movies we've seen and then I remembered they were making this into a movie and he asked if I wanted to see it even though we both knew it was going to be awful. So originally I went into the week prior to going to the movie with no hope for it me and my brother were just going to make fun of the movie and that would be that. THEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS PRODUCED BY GUILLERMO DEL TORO... Needless to say this peaked my interest so when it turned out to be mediocre (at best) I was vastly let down. Also btw my mom was in this movie. She's the lady from the red room :^D And yes you should not give her a hug either.
Great video as usual May! Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts and the editing still kills me😂😂
LOL at that very beginning. Reminds me of Katya Zamo going "Halloween is, uh... spooky."
I have to applaud the filmmakers on adapting the Harold story. They couldn't make it too gory but they still came up with something ab-so-lute-lee nightmarish.
i tried reading a goosebumps once but it didn’t even feature the thing on the cover which is why I’m only like half out despite chugging girlpills every day
The theater experience of this movie that I had was amazing. There were a bunch of college boys behind me holding each other, and one kept saying "I'm not okay bro, I'm not fucking okay." It was awesome.
Story had a lot of good things to it but none of those things linked up at all. I thought the dialogue was funny. The creatures were 100/10, and overall I really liked the movie despite its many shortcomings. Definitely will watch the sequel should it ever happen.
"Movies!" is an iconic opening line to a video and honestly we stan a spooky content queen
15:29 name a more iconic sentence, I DARE YOU. The "oh bitch" literally shook me to my core
Besides it being a mediocre horror movie, the thing that really bothered me was that I never saw Stephen Gammell’s name appear in the credits, which is super fucked up.
Yay! I love whenever you pop up in my feed May 👍 I could listen to you review cream of wheat or different kinds of rocks tbh lol
Funny that i actually first heard of this book from your childhood trauma video, and only a few years later now this movie became one of the most anticipated this summer
Moral of the story?
Now we're gay!
i would pay 100 dollars to hear what you thought of the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. not related to anything, but still
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
Perfect intro as always
Your videos always make me smile
You hit the nail on the head with this review.
Just returned home drunk as fuck to discover my true emo queen uploaded a video. Rejoice!!! 190% going to watch this in my PJs whilst eating an entire pizza 💕
I liked it for the most part when I saw it in theaters, but I can definitely see why a lot of people didn't like it (I was just happy and totally fangirled that they were so faithful to the illustrations); but I have a theory that maybe this film was made in a way to be someone's 'first horror movie' if that makes sense. I'm sure for a lot of people, the books were their introduction to horror (like, legit nightmare inducing horror), and possibly the filmmakers wanted to do that; make a film that would be someone's introduction to horror/scary movies (and maybe analyzation, considering all of the callbacks of Vietnam, which I honestly think the movie could've done without).. I'm hoping if they decide to do a sequel or something, they just go 'hell with it, we're going full horror' for those of us that grew up with the books, and want the legit horror.. if that makes sense xD
I know this may not matter much, but I've had a terrible night tonight, and this vid definitely cheered me up a lot
Thanks May, keep up the good work, luv u lol
Just rewatched your old video because I saw the movie last night!
"it was a.. transitory experience"
_badum tsss_
oh cmon it's a good joke
@@biggestastiest It was indeed!
Another great video from the spooky girl herself!! Love u May!!
The picture from The Thing used to send me and my step brother running and screaming. Hail Yourself!
I could not agree more with the screenplay. "You don't read the book, the book reads you." I was CACKLING in the theatre.
Thank you. I saw it last night and was devastated. You are absolutely right. The books were a rite of passage. They should have made a TV series where each story was an episode.
I love the intro!!
Dat production value!
I love you just bursting into laughter. Thanks again for your insight!
your laugh brings me joy
Rockin, spooktacular new intro!
Scary Stories To Make You Say "Huh?"
Idk, I'm 30 and grew up with this.
But I went into the movie theater assuming they were going to GOOSEBUMPS that shit, make it all "whimsy".
So I think it's because I set the bar THAT low, that I wasn't disappointed.
Yaaaay! New video! And damn lady, you look great!
You look great and I'm super happy for you...I've been subscribed for like a year and you're 👌🏾
hands down BEST INTRO OF ALL TIME!!!!!
If they made this movie an anthology in the style of Trick r Treat, it might have worked better.
my fave was the illustration for the story "Oh Susannah"
I think I’ve been looking for something that recaptures how I felt reading Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark as a 5 year old child for my whole life, and this movie certainly wasn’t it (but it’s not like I was expecting it to be). I think the closest I’ve gotten was reading William Peter Blaty’s The Exorcist for the first time under a single lightbulb in an unfurnished basement during a snowstorm when I was in hs lmao, I highly recommend it
Side note idk if The Wendigo stood out to anyone else in their memory of the SSttitD books but the full audiobook of Algernon Blackwood’s novella The Wendigo is on UA-cam for free & like everything else I’ve read by Blackwood it has a great haunting atmosphere
I can confirm I used to be into spooky shit.
Guess what I’m gay what a coincidence
One time I read Scary stories to tell in the dark for like 4hrs + and I legit opened like a portal or hallucinated because when my cousin was in the kitchen I seen a transparent lady walking towards her and I was blinking and she was not going away! I ran outside screaming and then my grandma got mad at me and said I couldn't read them anymore. I was like eight.
If you read these books as a kid you grew up to be spooky and gay can confirm
Yeah, I could see people making better animations while reading the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books. I remember reading the story where a woman who always has a ribbon tied around her neck and tells her husband she can’t take it off. One day, his curiosity gets the best of him and he decides to untie the ribbon. Poof, her head rolls off.
After I saw the movie I read some of the stories they used, they are still chilling. Edit: aside from the the creature designs. I saw the movie because of Guillermo Del Toro. I feel like this will be one of the many movies that can showcase how passionate and surreal his designs really are.
Your voice and presence are therapeutic. You are so beautiful and I love you. Thank you thank you thank you for existing and expressing yourself.
Bih, I haven't even seen the video yet - I just need to tell you how fucking GOOD YOU LOOK!!! 💕💕💕💕 Gurl be out there breaking hearts!!
