- So far the PPK is having issues setting primers off in DA mode. This could be me, this could be the gun. I will test another 100 rounds or so next weekend to see if its operator error or a break in issue. Beside light strike you will see one failure to extract/eject with a Hornady Critical Defense round.
Very well made review. The light strikes could be, as you said, just from the break in period. Maybe after a good cleaning and oiling she’ll be right as rain.
Light strikes with only the Winchester is more likely to be the ammunition
Yeah mine hates Winchester and AMMO INC. They must use hard primers
It's the Winchester white box. Everything else the Walther PPK feeds.
I don’t think I ever had a light primer strike with my Interarms PPK/S. It eats all ammo I’ve fed it. I did have a spring break and sent it back to the factory and they replaced it no questions asked. I’d send it back to the factory and have them go over it.
My Walther does the same thing on double action only. Primers are an issue. S&B Primers are harder than USA made primers. Second pull sets it off. The Walther hammer when shooting double action doesn't seem to retract as far back as in single action. I installed an original firing pin spring, which seem to curb it some. I have been carrying Federal Lead Free 380 in 70 grain flat nose and haven't had any issues with this round misfiring yet. They are accurate and the velocity is about 1106. Factory box stated 1110, so it's right there. Personally, I gave up on hollow points in 380, either they don't expand or they don't penetrate. I also noticed the wound tracks in ballistic gel seem to be about the same with Hp's v Ball Flat nose. The 70 Grain seems to penetrate about right 17 to 18 inches and they recoil far less. Anyway, my gun does the same thing depending on the brand of ammo. These are awesome guns and I have been carrying one forever.
Thank you for your insight and personal experience. I'll keep the firing pin spring in mind. As for the hallow point, I guess you're about right, I've seen hornady critical defense tests in .380. That little polymer tip Is it supposed to help with expansion but it's hit or miss. Sometimes they expand beautifully, other times they stay like FMJ. Like you said, despite this small issue, I still love the gun.
Would prefer it in .32 with a 7 round mag without the extended tang as on the .22 version of the PPK/S. More reliable, less recoil, an extra round, and looks better. Bond had a .32, not a .380.
I'm tempted to call walter and beg them to make me one, lol. I should add however, Bond did use a 380 ACP ppk at least once in the Man With The Golden Gun and in Skyfall as said by Q. But I agree id love a modern PPK in .32
I put 600 rounds through a new PPK without a single misfire, stovepipe, failure to feed or any other type of malfunction what so ever. I used primarily Federal American Eagle 95 gr FMJ. I have not fired any type of self defense ammo through this particular pistol. From my experience PPKs/ PPK/S s are very finicky about what type of ammo they like. Find a ammo type that works and just stick to that. I also recommend using factory mags only. Not an expert here but I have owned PPKs for over forty years.
They will never do it because .32ACP is a dead caliber.

Not a "dead caliber". The Seecamp LWS-32, Kel-Tec P32, Beretta Tomcat, and CSA Skorpion are still being manufactured while their are huge numbers of .32 ACP chambered guns around. I like the hot loads from Buffalo Bore, Cor-Bon, Fiocchi and Underwood Ammo.
@@SheikOutdoors, he also used a .380 PPK with the extended beaver tail in No Time to Die. The PPK has been offered in .380 or 9mm Kurtz pretty much since its inception. The .32 just enjoyed a period of greater popularity in Europe.
Very nice review
Very cool video! It is the first one that I see that has this problem. Are you thinking on exchange it for a new one? Maybe Walther can help because that shouldn't happen and in a situation can be dangerous :O I would like to see more about this beautiful gun! I'm a Bond fan since Goldeneye :D
Thanks for watching, fellow Bond fan !
I have seen the issue with hard primers on the Walther forums as well as reddit. It seems that it really only happens using FMJ 'range' ammo that usually use harder primers.
I have never had a primer fail on my Hornady Carry ammo, and I have tested a lot of that. Never fails, its only the cheaper FMJ. So for that reason I wont send it back. Like you, I love the gun too much to be over critical about it.
If you want to learn a lot about this beauty, check out the channel @LegacyCollectibles , he is all about the PPK and he has written a few books on the them as well!
@@SheikOutdoors I see. In that case there's no need to change it :D. Yeah, I have seen many videos that for the PPK recommend using FMJ but I didn't know that the "range" ones used harder primers. That's interesting :O! I'm glad that Hornady works well! Have you tried other FMJs for your PPK? I hope they have worked fine. I hope I'll try a PPK myself someday! I love how you put the Goldeneye 64 soundtrack on the video! That's aweosme! Cheers! :D
Light strikes are ammunition issues not firearm.
I would like a PPK 9mm!
If you check out the youtube channel Legacy Collectibles You'll see there were 9mm ppks made back in the 40s. From what I understand it wasn't popular because it was too hot of a round for the frame of the gun
@@SheikOutdoors .380 is 9mm- (9X17mm) They did make a 9X18 Super but not 9mm Parabellum (9X19mm). Blowback designed pistols cannot handle 9X19mm chamber pressures unless it is an ugly Hi-point with a massive slide.
@@desertsoldier41 ah, so there were never any 9x19 ppks, then I misunderstood. I like your point about the Hi-points, I always tell people the big ugly slide is what makes its straight blowback possible and reliable.
I don’t think you can fault any guns for having occasional issues within the first 200-300 rounds during the break In period also try a better ammunition than Winchester white box before coming to conclusions about reliability
I am well passed the 300 round mark, getting close 1000. Iv taken this gun out to the range every single weekend since purchase. Has happened every single time so far. Im checking the back of the primers, its not a failure on the primer's part...its a light strike. In an email, Walther actually recommended Winchester white box for range ammo so that's why I used it a few times but of course I have shot other brands of ammo and all except Hornady Critical Defense have light-striked. So yeah, reliability issues.
