    Way back in '75, I did the DEP for 90 days because my 8 month tech school was not available yet. The DEP gave me time to get my affairs in order, including marriage. After graduating from BMT in Lackland in January of '76, my wife and I drove to Chanute AFB in central Illinois for my school. After tech school, as a Californian, I was hoping for orders back to the southwest US for my permanent duty station. Nope! I got orders to the extreme northeast (Loring AFB in Maine). We were stunned and very naïve. As I was reminded many times, "the needs of the Air Force come first". We ended up liking it there. Had some great experiences and made some great friends. For me, the Air Force was the right decision at the right time. I was honorably discharged after 4.5 years and we drove back to California. I'm proud to have served my country.

      @@NicoleBermz Good question. I had enlisted for 4 years but I extended my enlistment for 6 months because we didn't want to make the 3,000 mile drive back to California in the dead of winter. Having saved up 60 days of terminal leave, that allowed me to depart Maine in April 1980.

    Just swore into DEP. I scored an 85 afqt. 97 in Mechanical, 95 in Electrical... went to MEPS and failed color vision and depth perception 😔. Walk-Ins, I lived off them. I don't think I ever had someone from a cold call actually enlist. I did 24 years, but only 4 as a recruiter, 82-86. It must be a lot different these days, but I bet those "goals" are still around. The stress I experienced in the job was the worst in my working career. But it wasn't all bad either, best wishes for success from a former bag carrier. I don't miss recruiting, but I do miss the Air Force. Best 24 years of my life.

    I want to be a programmer, scored high on the asvab with M-A-G-E. They keep trying to get me into Airborne Linguist and they told me the EDPT test is "very hard". We will see, I told him I'm willing to work with him and made a list of jobs. He almost made it sound like it was impossible to get that job. Told me a story of some guy with a 98 ASVAB who couldn't pass it. There's not much information about this test on the internet 🙄

    • @terelld9270
      @terelld9270 3 роки тому +2

      Linguist is a job that is a high need in the airforce. Which gives it a greater availability if you can pass the DLAB . Computer programmer on the other hand is an extremely rare job so chances of receiving it are very low. Being that there is no way to wait for one specific job, it seems like your recruiter was giving advice along your lines of interest to give you the best shot of being able to join. The edpt isn't necessarily difficult. Passing it just doesn't guarantee that you will receive that job. Good luck with your career!

    The problem with the Air Force is, very few jobs can translate to a job on the outside. After you spend 4 years in, you will go to the unemployment office in your state and that office will stamp on your paperwork - "No Job Experience". Congrats - you wasted 4 years of your life in the Air Force while your friends either went to college and got a degree, or they are in the trades - Do that instead.

    If you’re trying to be linguist just know you cannot choose your language; you get a dream sheet at basic training and Choose 5 you want the most from a list of 8-10 different languages. Oh and before you ask the Airforce does not teach non-prior service or basically any enlisted members Japanese so forget it weebs. The ones I know that are taught right now are Chinese, Russian, Korean, Farsi, Pashto, MSA (modern standard Arabic), Spanish, and Hebrew. I’m not sure about any others. If the language YOU want is not on this list then ur not gonna get it (maybe other Arabic dialects that’s it).

    I would like to be an officer (since I have my Bachelor of Fine Arts [ I know it's a degree that the military doesn't likes to hear/see but I already have a long back story about why I got my degree]) but don't know a good recruiter to help guide on. My friend trying calling one (well the air force reserve) the other day during our lunch break ( I was just her moral support) but it was kind of a let down, he basically just told her to just go Air Nation Guard and didn't really explain in depth why national guide, he just said, she doesn't have the degree for the demand now and no one is retiring yet (She has a History BA) . I already have an ideal career chose based on the careers offered on the site, just wanted to go more in depth about air force and best route. As of right now, I 'm working to back in my physical shape, studying for the ASVAB unless I need to study for the AFQT, and just making sure I maintain a good record. My family were back ground military, but growing up they told us to get bachelors and become officers instead if we decided to join military. Since then I already had Vets telling me to check out air force as well make sure to go in as officers, just need to find a good recruiter to help guide me to the right path.

    • @Kiahlaflame
      @Kiahlaflame  4 роки тому +3

      Dont down play your degree! The military values a Bachelor’s degree in its entirety!
      I’ve always told people - if you aren’t have luck with one recruiter and one recruiting office, try another (distance may become an issue but it may be necessary). I’ll echo your family and say the officer route is a better choice financial wise and work wise - depending on the career you’re in. Good luck with everything!

    Is there any way to apply to both OTS and enlisted at the same time just in case OTS falls through?

I’m not entirely sure if I’m fit to be an officer so I figured I should go enlisted. I’m worried about the wait time and not getting selected.
