Learning about wine is no easy feat, but there a few things you can do before you even enroll in a class or start studying that will get you started.
It's a basic question that has plagued most wine drinkers at one time or another. How do I learn about wine? Where do I start? There are a few things you can do right now that don't cost a lot and doesn't require you to even join a wine tasting class.
    1. Stop buying the same wine over and over. The key to learning about wine is tasting as much as you can from all over the world. Step out of your comfort zone and start buying wine that you normally wouldn't gravitate to. I love wine clubs for this very reason - my two favs right now are ACME Fine Wines and Viticole.
    2. Don't down the whole bottle in one sitting. Taste it over the course of several days or even weeks. The Repour Wine Savers have been the key to keeping my wines fresh and allowing me to revisit. They don't cost much and really do work.
    3. Get a good glass. Having the proper stemware DOES make a difference. You wouldn't show up to ballet class with tap shoes. Make sure you have the proper equipment - the most important of which is your wine glass. My preference is Zalto, but other great producers include Riedel and Schott Zwiesel.
    4. Take notes and spit. You HAVE to write stuff down. I promise you won't remember tomorrow, especially if you are throwing back several glasses in a sitting. Which is also why it's important to spit the wine if you are analyzing it. Get a good notebook and even a good pen - don't give yourself ANY reason to stop taking notes like a pen running out of ink or not working. Once decision fatigue sets in you won't want to keep writing things down. But having an arsenal of reference points to go back to will be the key to learning.
    5. Focus on just the nose and the palate when you're tasting the wine. Don't get too caught up in the color, appearance, viscosity (legs) when you're first getting started. When you're analyzing - start with just trying to identify the fruit, earth, and spice and the intensity and quality of those 3 things. You can even boil it down to Red fruit/Black fruit/Blue fruit if you want to keep it even more simple. Once you have that down, then begin to focus on the tannin and acid structure of the wine.

Love this, but the music was loud in some places and I had to turn on captions. Don't know if it's my computer. Didn't know about Vermeil. My husband is an Eagles fan....will have to surprise him with a bottle. Thanks again for great info.

Sorry about that! It really depends on the device how loud the music is, I'll try to keep an eye on it though. Your husband sounds awesome lol! A bottle of Vermeil would def be an awesome surprise!

Taking notes has been so incredibly helpful for me. I'm always trying to taste as much as possible and learn as much as I can, and taking notes is the only way I can keep things organized. Currently sipping on one of my new faves thanks to you: Cru Beaujolais. You always give great recommendations!

Love this video for a wine beginner like me! Speaking of wine clubs, I've been thinking of signing up for a subscription but it's quite a bit of money I'd be spending and don't know if the people picking out the selection are even legit. It would be great for you make a video dedicated to wine clubs and how they work or perhaps even rate some like Firstleaf, Cellar 503, Winc, etc. I would be interesting to see your input on the general quality of the wines available in these subscriptions :) .

SOMMVIVANT Its been extremely helpful on satisfying my curiosity on wine. It’s very overwhelming to go to a wine store and to see thousands of bottles so it’s nice having someone pick for me. I think it’s a great tool to learn and would recommend to anyone looking to do exactly that.
I’ve found a few wines I love, many that I enjoyed, and a couple that were... not so great 😅.
I’ve had my sub for 7 months now and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!

I agree, The only way to find out what you like is to try new wines. I hadn't previously cared about Merlot. My wine vender at work recommended a Merlot last night from Lilt Cellars in Napa. It's a 2015. It was good. I couldn't find a website for Lilt Cellars though. Have you tried any of their wines? I'm more of a lower tannin wine drinker and this Merlot was very berry tasting.

I don't know it and in my research came up short as well. I'll dig around a bit - my guess is that it was a white labeling situation or just brand new since the '15's are just being released. I know a lot of great small producers without a website or a way to buy their wines. One of my favorite Merlot's in the valley is a small label called Tate, I think they do a fantastic job.

I just did some wine tasting a couple of weeks ago and found a great bottle of Merlot at Nicholson Ranch. It's a 2012 Merlot "Estate" Sonoma Valley. Very tasty indeed!... "Emmolo" Winery has a great Merlot as well.. ;-)

SOMMVIVANT I spoke to my beer and Wine manager at work about the Lilt Cellars. I got the scoop. Apparently the Wine came from a highly respected winery in Napa that had grapes that didn't turn out the way they wanted for a $50 a bottle wine, so instead of dumping them they made this wine under Lilt Cellars so as not to be associated with their winery. Hey it tastes great to me!

Been scouring UA-cam for this exact content. Been studying wine for years and need so much more education, however, most of it is either too complex for the average joe or so boring and slow that I give up. Will be watching all of your videos! Cheers 🍷

Interested to see what you think of the garyvee wine club as I've been doing it since they first started and it's been quite worth it so far I believe. And on the tasting notes, I personally use an app called vivino for my tasting notes and to give wine an overall rating. Makes it easy to see the wines I've reviewed before and if I drink the same wine or a different vintage to see what I thought previously. For some it might be better than hand written notes as I'm not a fan of that lol.

    • @texasgina
      @texasgina 6 років тому +1

      Stewart Higgins I love Vivino

My first GV shipment will be delivered this week and it looks like it was a pretty good deal so we'll see! Never thought to use Vivino for tasting notes but it makes sense. Every time I see someone using the app they're in the restaurant using as a consulting device for which bottle to order. It's a really good point so I will have to give that a try, definitely would be easier to keep track of my catalog of wines that way.
