Thank you, Thank you!!! Buck, I have learned more from you in a few weeks about filing a chain than I could ever imagine. I am an old man (83) that has cut fire wood for 60 years. I am sure I would have save a lot of money and time if had fond you years ago. You can teach an old dog new ticks! Thanks again and Gods blessing. Larry Fisher
Nothing, in the shop, is more relaxing than turning on a great book and sharpening the chains. Thanks for teaching brother. Appreciate you for sharing.
Buckin you have so many sharpening videos, but it doesn't matter how many I've seen, there always seems to be info in one that's not in the others. That's why these never get old. Thank you! Happy belated birthday to Rita, she has your infectious smile bud.
The more I watch you sharpen your chains the sharper my chains get, it has been a six year adventure and I am so grateful, what a gift you are to us all Buckin!
The two biggest takeaways from your filing instructions that helped me is the fact that the teeth do not have to be the same length to cut straight and bar maintenance. Thanks for the lessons. My saws are happier as a result.
My saw is plain stock Echo 590. I keep corners of chain extremely sharp as they should be . I clearly notice that with em sharp my plain jane 590 saw cuts as if its had a nice engine/ muffler mod . Rips and pulls into hardwood and throws nice chips all the time. Thanks for sharing as always BBR
Buckin, you have made all the difference. I worked at a landscaping business that the owner heated everything with wood and he "taught" me how to sharpen chains but it was pretty much all wrong. Now I'm clearing my own land and your lessons have made all the difference! Thank you for sharing all your expertise.
I don't own a power saw. Never have, never will. But I'm sitting here thoroughly enjoying myself, watching Buckin' Billy Ray filing this chain 😄 So satisfying ☺️ Great video 👌🏻
Right on!! Thank you for the visuals. My ex used to always do the filing and never showed me. So starting over alone as a single mom I am literally learning this from scratch.
Thanks for the great description of the chisel edge and holding technique. This assures me that I am doing it correctly. The one thing that changed my experience with sharpening was learning how to set the raker height. When that’s wrong, the saw will do all sorts of wonky stuff.
From one UA-camr to another, I give the facts and give the viewer the TRUTH! If I'm not sure, I say so and ask for input. Thanks for helping me be a better sawyer!
People don't believe my hand sharpening is sharper than a new one out of the box. I guess they don't understand my hand sharpen chain pulls the saw into the wood hard. I just can't deal with a dull chain. Thank you for the videos @buckin !!! I love your sharpen videos. Thank you very much
I know you know what I’m talking about but now that I’ve watched your channel and have learned so much and so much more learning to come I can now hear a dull saw as well as a sharp saw for miles away from me lol!! It’s all in the filing!! Thanks Buckin!!
Yep, been through the process. No more gadgets, trained left and right hand round file. Thank you for your videos Buckin! They really made a difference. It's like some kind of new special place to live in a sharp, really sharp chain world. Filing is a kind of happy place, love it!
I can dull a chain rather fast when fighting fire. Thanks for showing this up close. Chain sharpening is a great way to take a break when working hard.
Buckin I hand filed my first chain 2 months ago after discovering your videos. Now my chains are sharp and throwing chips like mad. Thanks for sharing your years of experience and knowledge 🤘
Thank you for the great videos! Just got my 1st saw a month ago than found your channel shortly after. Put an oregon chain on the new saw and filed it the way you do and it cranks thru the wood better than I've felt on other saws I've ran back in high-school.
Thanks for the sharpening video. I have a Stihl MS271 and after I took your advice it cuts like a new chain every time. It took a lot of practice but now I! Have sharp chains.
Buckin, thank you for all the knowledge you show us and give it to us so easily! I've learned to file from your videos so well that I didn't even believe it! I only see your videos (no one else) which made me buy a new husqvarna 372xp to cut the wood at home! Thanks a lot buckin! Happy birthday to Rita! Good and safe kilometers with the new car! Greetings from Greece! You are my role model when thinking about chainsaws! Thanks!!!
Today i sharpened about 80 pounds of my chainsaw chains by hand file like you do from videos i watched of yours i have tried grinders and other sharpening gadgets , Nothing Nothing works better then hand filling and using the depth gauge like you use getting the rakers right means a lot . Before your videos i cut a lot of C cuts after sharpening my chains now they are spot on fast cutting longer lasting . Thank you. Really thank you I we cut 30 to 60 chords of oak wood a year.
Thanks Billy for you videos. We were just hit by Hurricane Helene, and our small town lost big pecan and pine trees everywhere. I have been watching your videos trying to learn how to safely help clear up this mess. I have 3 big p3can trees,, and a 120 year old magnolia tree down in my yard. Everywhere around us sold out of almost everything chainsaw in days. I wound up having to by the Husqvarna 120 mark ii with only a 14 inch chain, plus i have an old Ryobi with a 18 inch bar and chain. It has been a challenge to learn to clear my yard with these with such big trees, but im learning. 3 of my trees pushed over with giant root balls attached, and the trees are easily 30 inches or more at the bottom. Hopefully i get this down pat, and can soon help some of my neighbors who are in the same situation as me. Its been over 2 werks, and everyones yards are still full of downed trees. Your videos have really helped, Thank you.
I sure can file better now after a couple years of watching Buckin'. The woodstove feels extra cozy burning wood my family and I have worked ourselves.
Awesome 👌 The filing videos got me confident to file and cut better with my saws and help other people with chains they thought were ok but cut like garbage. Thanks Buckin 👍
And I'll be the first to admit it... I blew through 3 chains learning how to file and I still am not vary good. Take ur time go slow and it will turn out. ❤
Zen and the art of saw mantenance? My sharpening has improved by leaps and bounds from your guidance in those vids BBR! Happiness is a sharp chain that doesn't try to cut around corners. Ol' Pap used to call it "butterballin". Thank You
I thought I was doing okay with the Stihl sharpener. After watching a few of your sharpening videos, I have never made cleaner cuts in my life. Throwing shavings instead of dust. 16 inch bar, 42cc Craftsman. Cut a dozen 20inch slices for the garden, only one cut I left a bar mark. It is INCREDIBLE how different a saw it is, and it's not very strong anyway. I wish I didn't buy Craftsman, I won't do that again.
Before I watched some of your other sharpening videos I would just ruin my chains. I'd be running half dull chains and when I was trying to sharpen them I would be going at it all wrong. After I watched your sharpening videos my skill has gotten 100% better over time and I haven't run a dull chain since.👍😀
Buckin, I can't find that bar and chain oil anywhere. The stuff you mentioned in the last video. Also can you tell us the appropriate file size and brand? Should you always use the file the chain company recommends?
DeWalt biodegradable on Amazon is the same stuff. $15 a quart. For a 3/8” chain use 13/64 or 7/32 file. Pefrd is a good file brand or Oregon. Anything made in Sweden is good.
Love watching your sharpening videos, Buckin Billy. I have improved my sharpening skills alot but my problem is I cant really see to good, I have one eye and am now going blind in that eye so I wear the strongest reading glasses we can buy at dollar store or Wal-Mart and for now I can sharpen a chain a few times before taking them to a local saw store and get them sharpened professionally. Your close up videos really work for me, thank you for another amazing video.
He answered the question/problem I've been having. I knock the corner off on 7-8 teeth every sharpen. I also need to sharpen from over top the bar now.
The burr. I know what you’re talking about. In my video I call it the toe nail. Your filing technique is exactly the way I file. Like you say it takes time. Nothing better than a chain that cuts. Love the video.
My sharpening so far has been limited to using a 2-in-1 sharpener. Even with that, there's some trial and error in getting things right with sharpening. I definitely look for that corner and the top plate being straight.

I would definitely like to make a video of me sharpening and see how well I do by sending it to the chain sharpening master BBR. Anything I’ve learned has definitely been from you, appreciate you and your videos bud. Thanks
Hello Buckin B. indeed! When I go too far under the top plate, for example with a 4.8 or 5.0 mm file, the corners break off quickly and sometimes very far. But they cut damn well just 'for a while'. 5.5mm file and straighter gullet is the trick to keep going for a long time. I have been looking at your instructions a lot and learning from my mistakes. this is how we get somewhere Greetzzz! Kristof Belgium

I take great pride in my chains because I spent the time and LISTENED to what you teach us, BUCKIN'. I won't waste your time sending you videos that just don't add up...even watched a "faller" who spent 30 years cutting huge redwoods down, and he said as plain as day, "watch your curf, don't look up and watch the tree"....WHAT???!!! It is exactly what you taught me NOT to do. And like you say, the internet is unfortunately full of these type videos. When friends come over and help me fall and buck some trees, they don't hesitate to grab even my 211 to buck with because they know they're chain on their 251 or whatever they brought with them does not come close to being sharp as the 211. I can do anything with even a small saw like that, because it's sharpened correctly, and goes through whatever is at hand like a hot knife goes through butter. And never boggs down or hiccups...it'll cut the same everytime, and that's what I enjoy the most. Plus the fact that these chains make my saws work easier than others, and they last alot longer. Thanks, BBR. It's not rocket science, just watch and listen, like I did and still do.
Thank you so much for posting these videos. I happened upon one of your videos and used your advice to sharpen my chains. My saw has never cut so good. Been binge watching your videos since. Keep the content coming. Best wishes from Corryton, Tennessee!
This is the first time I saw something that I think I can work with, I’ve got a job Sunday with a saw that cuts, but doesn’t “feel” right. It’s slow. The chain is not old enough to need replacement, but I’ve got a dangerous storm damage to fell, and don’t want to be fighting to cut. I’m going to see if it works for me as I see it now. Thank you.
Looking at the chain before sharpen can be a great telltale for saw problems too. If all the teeth of one side are knocked it can mean that the chain is collecting the covers or other things.
Sir . I started hand filing watching your videos and I thank you so much . But not sure what I am doing wrong .chain feels sharp . When I start cutting just stops. Appreciate any help . Thanks God bless. Stay safe
Have you got a raker gauge? If so then it may be the bar could have burrs on the rails flat file the sides of the bar if you feel a burr always a good idea to flip the bar so it wears evenly hope this helps you Peace&love ✌️❤️🌲🪵🪓🐝
What files do you use? They always sound so nice and crisp. The only ones I’ve had that sound a Anything like that When filing is some husky intensive cut but I don’t feel like they cut near as nice as the ones you use.
You'd be proud Billy I fixed up this 261 at this big company this morning that had no gullet whatsoever and almost no tooth left and rakers way down. I got the gullet and almost thought some teeth would break off they were so small. It absolutely ate through some aussie hardwood, even with the little 261. 😁 coworkers were doubtful until the chips started flying. (I'm in australia but I'm a BC boy and long time viewer. The first guy I worked for didn't know how to sharpen so I learned from you)
Two weeks ago a man gave me a almost full 5 gal bucket of chains...these chains fits my 18" echo saws...these chains are brand new...the man will use them untill they get dull...and he tosss them...these are origon chains...I ❤ it...iv already sharpen 10 of them
Hey brother, when I first started filing I was hesitant to free hand without a file but now I won't do it any other way. Hand filing to me is therapy but every session I'm trying to get it as sharp as ole BBR and I here him in my head saying, "Be kind friends."
My chain is not pulling itself into the wood. I don't know why. I'm giving it a good profile with a decent C under the tooth but not too much. Using a 7/32 file and the angle looks good. Getting a mix of good size cuts and also dust. Some things off and I am having a hard time figuring it out. The rackers are set perfect, maybe a pinch low.
Here is the opinion of someone who has been cutting firewood for over 50 years. I have observed Buckin’s chains in person and I will not say they are the sharpest and who could make a statement like that. I will say they are the sharpest I have ever observed. Watch and learn and you will be better. ♥️👍👍
Hi Buckin I am new to sharpening my chains and your videos are an absolute blessing. I am wondering what brand of file you use and if you have noticed a difference between brands as far as longevity?
Great vid as always Buckin, like those helical cut files. What brand? Also seen commercial last night announcing Timber Titans w/ Hogan. You guys mentioned it on that leaner job where root rot occurred after a service road had been cut some time ago. Excited to see some hardcore remote forestry cutting! Makes parents proud to see there children did listen to what it means to be a responsenable adult. Even though sometimes it seems there not listening, following example. Could see the joy brimming proud papa! Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY. to your daughter, Rita? Take care springs almost here. The first guy I worked for didn't know how to sharpen so I learned from you)
Billy Ray youre sharp in many ways 😎😎👍👍 keep up the content its pure gold keeeeeeepppp ooooonnnnn Buckin friends braaaaaaapppppp😊😊

Oh wow, that’s a good haul. Those should last you for quite some time
Headin to my parents property today to send a few more trees down, had to stop in for a little refresher. Always a good day to run a power saw 🤙
Thank you for your knowledge and sharing it.
welcome
Hey brother, when I first started filing I was hesitant to free hand without a file but now I won't do it any other way. Hand filing to me is therapy but every session I'm trying to get it as sharp as ole BBR and I here him in my head saying, "Be kind friends."
A full college degree on chain sharpening here, folks!!!!
Love you all...❤❤❤
Lieutenant Bradley
Well said my friend. 👍👍
Best closeup views of your teeth so far, BBR. Well done, you handsome devil.
Thanks for the touch up video! Keep up the great work 👍
Hey Buckin’, Based on all the file inquiries it might be time to start selling Oregon files . Get Christine hooked up on them! 😂
Do you ever use bow saws when bucking wood ?
Here is the opinion of someone who has been cutting firewood for over 50 years. I have observed Buckin’s chains in person and I will not say they are the sharpest and who could make a statement like that. I will say they are the sharpest I have ever observed. Watch and learn and you will be better. ♥️👍👍
Hi Buckin I am new to sharpening my chains and your videos are an absolute blessing. I am wondering what brand of file you use and if you have noticed a difference between brands as far as longevity?
Me too?
Really useful 😊 is it the same procedure on a semi chisel chain?
I don't think it matters if it's a full chisel or semi chisel, it's just as important on both to have your top plate straight to get them to cut
I see fellers cutting sweet veneer hardwoods on the tube. Their 90cc saws with 28’’ bars eat wood like butter!
❤ BILLY U R A GODSEND TO MANY PEOPLE! 😊
Thanks so much sir,, I am learning machine chainsaw & filling chain studying,we are enjoy & very good information, tq sir
I'm running a Husqvarna 460 with 24 inch bar full chisel chain.
Hey Buckin, love the video. what are your thoughts on using a Dremel with a stone to sharpen ?
Yes. This. Want to know.
never tried it
Great vid as always Buckin, like those helical cut files. Shoulder will come in don't rush it, hard to do when you've worked thru pain, agony& hard times to make life better for your family.
Id like to know what brand files he uses.
Oregon
@BuckinBillyRaySmith Thank you kindly. I've been using Stihl.and off.brand TriLink and just noticed how much more aggressive those are.
That's very good point of coming suddenly dull and that scenario would happen right after finishing deep notch..
