Thanks Buckin for the information and training! Thanks to you I started square grinding and wow what a difference! I can't go back as the square grind is so much faster!
Awesome video! The information on this channel is priceless! I am so much better and safer in my forest thanks to Buckin’. I am only a hobbyist but the information is so awesome.
I bought a home that was heavily over planted and also had lots of buckthorn that was wildly overgrown. I have little kids so I didn't even want to let them out in the yard with 2" thorns sticking off these things. I had purchased a box of Oregon chains for my EGO 16" chainsaw and they worked fairly well until I caught rocks trying to trim everything as low as I could. I followed the sharpening guide on the Oregon hand sharpening kit I bought and it felt like I was using a butter knife. Finally, after about 5 months of not wanting to use the chainsaw, I ran into more poorly maintained trees that needed to go because of overcrowding. I saw a recent video of yours about using too small of a file to sharpen, so I stepped up the size to what felt like it would be too much. After about 10 minutes of sharpening, the chain was demolishing everything I touched. It was even sharper than out of the box. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with the world.
@@Orudos I live in Minnesota and also bought 31 acres completely choked out with buckthorn. I struggled until I found Buckin’ and his sharpening videos. I laugh at how I did things before….it is so much work! A dull or improperly sharpened chain makes it 10X worse. I pull as much as I can with my puller then cut and treat the rest. Removing unhealthy trees and replanting native trees like a madman. Sometimes it feels like watering the desert but in time I know I will win the battle.
@@MNSkeetFamily Well said! The work will never end but you just keep making progress, enjoy spending time outside being productive and the small victories when you wrap up a task.
File, sharpening, file , sharpening. Reading and spending many hours in the basement trying different angles, different brand of chains, different file size , every one says you bought an expensive saw what else you are searching for? No one will understand us. Thank you Buckin
I have tried using a flat file. I think I have a lot more to learn but man would it cut! I I love the view of the tooth. I can’t wait to get back out and try some more. Thanks Buckin!
Love hearing the stories of the legends that you have worked with. That was the best part of this video, because you lit up a little bit when you started talking about them.
You explained it very well. I’m going to try it on one of my older chains. I’m gonna give it a go. Thanks for the tip Billy. I’ll let you know the outcome.

Thanks so much. I concur for sure. Fantastic. I may be the only one in Tasmania to run a square ground skip chain on a 36" bar with a 660 magnum. It cuts so nice!
Buckin', thanks for taking the time to show us your grinding method - especially with all of the extra up close shots - it's very much appreciated! I'm not sure if you were already planning to show this to us, so if you were, please pardon my impetuosity, but could you give us a tutorial on your method for initially dressing your grinding wheel to gain the profile that you're looking for your square chain and then also talk to us about your protocol for the maintenance dressing of your wheel that helps you to keep it exactly where you want it?
Buckin talkin about the "inner top plate" angle for correct term. This IMO is THE most important angle, I mean there all important but the inner top plate has the most consequences.
I saw a good video on "Wilson Forrest Lands" channel and he uses a square file which is what I will start using shortly. The proof is in the chips coming off the saw, I can only imagine the chips coming off your saw from that sweet square grind. The only downside to the square grind is that they are prone to dulling more easily if you hit dirt etc.
The finished grind is ok a little room for change according to what u like & wood u cut but I bet it cuts nice. Cutters got lots betterer as video progressed. Grinders require good operators, Buckins got it. U cant just walk up to a Simington and get wonderful grinds, its takes knowledge, skill and experience on the grinder. But watching that blue Simmington wheel turn with ZERO runout was soothing to my soul, its quality kit.
Hey, BR. Love all your videos. I’ve watched your video that almost took you out mostly and send it to everyone I know. You are an awesome survivor. Great sharpening video. Now here’s my request. I’ve seen videos over and over on other channels on the Oregon powersharp, sharpening system. Problem is all use regular chains. They don’t know you have to use a powersharp chain, and has given that powersharp a bad review. That chain is made more like a chisel than teeth. I would like to see you do a review unless you have one already. In that case I must have missed it. Powersharp needs a fair review. Thanks.
Buckin’ your videos on square grinding really helped me know what I was trying to do for sure. Played with my old Silvey for quite a while and now I’ve settled in on what I like. Do you have any recommendations for cleaning chains of pitch prior to grinding? I’m sure your fir and balsam make you have to do that sometimes…
I sure wish i could afford a simmington. Im a professional moulder head grinderman for a large mill in central oregon. I would absolutely love to get my hands ona simmington and output aome amazing grinds for these sawyers
Been hand filing for a long time and am really good at it... That being said in my opinion it depends on what your cutting weather or not square or round is better... I have found that in really hard woods like hickory hedge and oak round is better but in woods that are softer square is better
So buckin from what I've seen throughout watching your videos last couple years is that you prefer the square ground chains. I'm just guessing you believe they cut better?
Hey Buckin. Have you thought about making an episode with bear claw. Reminisce about the good old days. That would be something! I suspect there would be something to listen to.
My boss buys square ground chains sometimes but only round files. I wonder if the angle matters as much on a square file. I always set up a hard woods angle. Thanks Buckin
Augusta Georgia. Millions of downed trees down due to Hurricane Helene. Uprooted root balls, hung up trees, trees snapped up high and hung up. Widow makers will be around for decades. Many have yet to fall. I bit the bullet and purchased 60cc pro saw. I have a lot to learn. I’m on a mission to get em all. Could you put out a series on the dangerous trees and how to cut them down?
The working point has to hit first, the sprocket drives the chain in, the working point is pulled up off of the bar, the depth Guage pulls the chain back down and the chip is thrown out. The working point should be about 30 thou above the depth Guage.
Hi brother, I hav never run one of these grinders before, but looks like that feature u call a 'side beak' mite be from the top of the stone being rounded and needin to be dressed. But thats some nice lookin grinds. Love yer vidjas. Peace
Any chance you could go over how to gussy up the grinding wheel? I just bought one of these and it's got the diamond tipped dressers - but I'm not super great at using them.
Buckin how long can you typically cut with the square do you get more cutting time with the square ground or do you get more with the round ? Just wondering I've never ran any square ground?
This can be done by hand also correct? I really need to learn to square hand file. I got the round file figured out but everybody says the square grind is where it’s at!
Hello sir, could you please answer a question regarding a full chisel chain. At 64 years old the most I can handle is my 60 cc saw with a 24 inch bar. I have been told that putting a full chisel chain on would push the limits of the saw. Would you agree? Thank you for your time.
A video idea. What would happen if you filed the rakers to a complete zero. Pickup your strongest chainsaw and try cutting a log to show what would happen. Could not find anyone doing this experiment. Thumbs up if any one else would like to see this.
You can hand file after you get it where you want it then you can touch it up with a hand file square maybe you can follow up with a hand file video. I would like to see that also especially being out in the field to touch up the teeth, would like to see that Thanks Billy@@BuckinBillyRaySmith
