/ 3minuteguitar Covers leads and riffs from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Gimme Three Steps," focusing on movable chord shapes and soloing over chord changes. Hoodrio Lesson #9.
I finally returned to learning this song again. Like you said, it's not exact but you arm us with so many tools to be able figure things out on our own. Awesome stuff. Thanks for all your wonderful videos that you put so much effort into. I would love to hear your rendition with that singer in it who plays the drums. I really like his voice!
Awesome lesson. This will give me something to practice for a while. That bend with the pinky on next strong is gonna be the hardest part. Thanks for taking the time to show us.
Hoodrio,Well here it is August of 2016 and I'm just coming across this lesson now, I am 55 yrs old now , Back in Oct of 2012 I was in a Horrific Motorcycle accident where I lost my right leg and shattered my spine fractured my Pelvis, All those lovely things that happen to a human body when it is hit be an extended 350 Ford van with the accelerator floored, I was a mess. not expected to make it but as my wife told the doctor that day he wasn't treating the average person that I had come thru many things and if anyone would survive it would be me, I always wanted to play the guitar but just never had the time, When I got home there was a brand new Yamaha acoustic Guitar there waiting for me from my oldest daughter and her than fiance .( They've since been married ) I started learning from the internet and of course like most people didn't seem to be making much progress at all, but I hung in there and practiced my butt off, I found that when I finally thought about it and telling myself that I would never be Joe Bonamassa ,And that I just wanted to be able to play a few songs at a camp fire without looking foolish,It started coming to me, I started seeing progress and as it usually goes at that point It became easier and easier to catch on to things' I realized that by finding lessons on the internet that were easy enough for me to play but also learn something new,I( was able to apply those learned techniques to all playing in general and I love playing more than ever now, I spent years searching for lessons that had the songs I was interested in ady In would be able to relate to the instructor , I went thru hundreds and thought of this song after hearing it on the radio and discovered your channel. Even without written Tabs or chords I was able to easily understand you and like your technique I've subscribed and after all this blabbering Just wanted to seriously thank you and look so forward to learning more from you. You rock , Thank You so much for making what appears to be the perfect teaching videos for me, Maybe someday I will record or skype and let you see the progress you have personally shown me thanks again Sincerely Edward Grabow , Long Island New York
your right about the learning process, there are many ways to play this, I use many ways to play it when I play it, good song to learn for intermediate players , learning the fretboard.
This was an extremely great lesson for me. I was a riff driven hack for 47 years. I'm finally seeing how the theory is applied to my meager knowledge. This song is right in my wheelhouse now. Explaining scales vs chord solos just makes sense now. I thought it was much harder of a concept. You're a great teacher and a fine player. If you live near FarNorCal let's get together. I'll hold down the rhythm and learn .
Many lessons on UA-cam take too long goin over the simple D and A shapes and skim right over the bends! You are actually showing, slowly, what is goin on and are providing in depth explanation. Bravo. If it’s a lead lick important to the integrity of the song like this, teachers should always stress it. Because anybody can learn the other chords by ear. Hahaha rant over. Thank you!
I appreciate the lesson but geez, just play the dang song one time all the way through. Some of us can learn it by just watching. Way too long in my opinion. Don’t mean to be an a hole.
@Hoodrio Excellent points. Mimicking the classics is fine if all you ever want to do is play covers, which is what I've always done too. But when I got together with other guitarists, it would be kind of awkward because we can't really play anything together besides exact replica covers because I didn't know anything else.....so this motivated me to want to know more about the theory behind the music, so I really appreciate your videos man.
I can't thank enuff for sharing your knowledge! There's so many people that are a way too high and mighty and think there "guitar stars" and they just can't be bothered helping out anyone except there pocketbook! I don't really get those people. They never acknowledge any of there comments on YT! A few real axxholes come to mind. I won't swear cuz ladies don't swear! Knowledge is an incredible tool and if you can help someone out with it, why not! What goes around, comes around!
really enjoy your lessons. Love learning the theory and how to apply to other situations. I think you have a very cool speaking voice to and are a great presenter. Thanks! PS: love that Esquire from other vids......she's a beauty.
@cookiemonster55100 It's Sky Blue--semi-rare color only offered for 2 years on American Series Strats. They probably spilled a vat of sonic blue into another of surf green or something.
Great stuff. These are the kinds of generic riffs I've never understood. Note to self - for the first riff, the count is something like 1 2& 3& 4& 2&3 4&1 where the first 3& is consecutive down strokes on the chord and the last 2&3 4&1 are the 7-9 on the 4th string then the chord or the 2-4 on the 5th string then the A chord.
Good points, Sam. I think that just goes to prove how many different kinds of learning styles exist for musicians. For me, I could practice the solos of the greats for over 30 years (which I have, off and on), and I would still be stumped at an open jam if I did not understand the theory behind the licks in order to be able to apply them to different songs. My lessons are definitely aimed at folks who may not be natural musicians or have the ears to learn just by listening and/or watching.
A great teacher, is not just someone that knows the subject, but someone that knows the subject, and can easily explain it to the student. You Sir, are a great teacher. I have watched many videos on guitar playing, and you, by far are the best teacher. Please keep up the good work! Many Thanks :)
Great lesson! THE BEST on the internet for this song. Some other person who did a video on this song led me astray. What a waste of my precious practice time!
hi thanks for the good lesson, i don't understand the "anchoring" thing of the pinky on the 10th fret. i don't bend it and neither do you so why is it important to fret it? i get the dmajor business but not the technique of the pinky, thanks Hoodrio
@@Hoodrio Oh, my bad thought it was surf green, which is what is on my '57. (the doors on my house are painted surf green!) Really like your CCR lessons........A CCR was the first record I ever bought, when I think I was in the 7th grade. ;-)
Note to self 2: where he says he misspoke (around 5:50), he meant the A string at one point, not the D. The frets are correct. Is the G there a "blue" note? What is the pentatonic scale there?
Thanks for your feedback, Clint. Because of similar messages, I subsequently changed my presentations to include a demonstration of the licks themselves at the very beginning of each lesson. This was one of my very early lessons.
I’ve learned a lot watching these vids.Like a tool box. Watched him for years and continue coming back.
this is extremely helpful for me - especially in the explanations that make sense for more than just this song. Thank you so much for posting!!!!!
Thank you. Very simply explained and very doable for the band I'm playing this with. Thanks again!

This is one of the best lesson sites.....Thanks
Sweet lesson. I might even do this today if I've got time. You kept it simple for those of us with ADD.
You do a great job teaching this! And yeah, that My twang guitar guy is pretty fantastic!
GREAT shirt Hoodrio!!!

Wearin' that shirt you should be playing Jessica, serious props for showing Dickie some love. Hugh fan love both bands. 🤘🤘👍👍
Good job 👍
nice lesson!
Thank you for the lesson! Some lessons on youtube for this song are quite wrong.
very nice now i can do it right
excellent, thanks heaps

Thanks, bro--once of the nicest feedback comments I have received.
Hoodrio You are very welcome
This is how skynyrd plays it thank so much. Others teach it wrong
freakin awesome
nice vid really helped you explaind it really well it sunded like the song what amp do you use?
love it
Great lesson! THE BEST on the internet for this song. Some other person who did a video on this song led me astray. What a waste of my precious practice time!
i love the strat i have one like that but its surf green what color is that
Third reason to give us this lesson...this tune rocks and you nailed it! Thanks for your help.
@MyTwangyGuitar
You must be even more talented than I thought. Do you play everything by ear? Even the stuff like the Stray Cats?
Nice......Thanks!!!!
hi thanks for the good lesson, i don't understand the "anchoring" thing of the pinky on the 10th fret. i don't bend it and neither do you so why is it important to fret it? i get the dmajor business but not the technique of the pinky, thanks Hoodrio
sean o'connor You fret the first string because you play it. A unison bend means you are playing 2 notes in unison: the bent note and the anchor note.
can u play it all the way thru
@Hoodrio I have a Sky Blue! (: I love it :P
is that a '57 Reissue? Looks like the one I own. love your lessons brother......especially the idea that one can build a toolkit w/ these ideas.
Thanks for the kind feedback, Joseph! It is a 2001 American Series in the somewhat rare sky blue finish. Fantastic guitar!
@@Hoodrio Oh, my bad thought it was surf green, which is what is on my '57. (the doors on my house are painted surf green!) Really like your CCR lessons........A CCR was the first record I ever bought, when I think I was in the 7th grade. ;-)

E Major Pentatonic with the G just a passing note. Don't overthink it!
Ah very cool. Thanks, I'll try!
thanks for the lessons.. but my god i am into minutes before you play the first lick
Thanks for your feedback, Clint. Because of similar messages, I subsequently changed my presentations to include a demonstration of the licks themselves at the very beginning of each lesson. This was one of my very early lessons.
No kidding, I went into retirement by the time we got to the A chord.
Good commentary on theory and style, not just showing tabs.
A real good tutorial
Thanks for the lesson!
Thx
