- Gimme Three Steps Lead and Rhythm Guitar Lesson. When you analyze the guitar licks in this song, you see that they're really pretty much just typical guitar licks using the notes from the chords that are playing in the background.
If you want to learn a lot of great Skynyrd songs, visit www.LEADSOLO.com
I've been playing this for 45 years. You are the first one I've seen play it accurately.
yep.....not many get it right. We have played the 76 Knebworth version since 1992. Great pub song
TIGHT!!! Very well done! That Gibby sounds spot on to!!
No one ever talks about how great Lynyrd Skynyrds guitars players are,I think they're very good.
Chad Tinsley no they don’t , they were geniuses and just extremely talented, especially Ed king . As far as I know he wrote all the music to sweet home Alabama , and a lot on other songs that he really never got credit for .
yes . They're fucking brilliant in my opinion. Why they don't get mentioned in the list of all time great rock guitarists is beyond me
@Randy Randal Rumor was , when Steve was asked to join , Ronnie told Gary and Allen they need to step up their game.
@Randy Randal Steve Gaines was far superior in ability and knowledge than Rossington and Collins, though both were decent in their own right. Check out Steve Gaines solo in Sweet home Alabama at Oakland. If it is improvised..... wow!!
you couldnt be more wrong. i talk about it all the time lol
Finally some lessons where the notes and intervals are addressed and not shapes and finger/fret counting. Great lesson
Thanks I appreciate your comment very much.
Yes! This is what I need too, shapes may show how to play the song but doesn't explain anything. I need to know why something is played the way it is so I can progress.
I love the way you musically explain what we are doing. It helps me learn the fretboard and keys so much better ..
I don't even know how to play the guitar and I still like watching your videos. I like it when you play all the guitar parts of a song.

Thank you, Tom, for this video this has helped me a lot and I'm sure many others. The pedal steel bend is such a simple concept, but I've never seen anyone break it down as simply as you do.
That was great, been one of my favorites since they did it. Thank you very much. Now I can play it and sing it, it's absolutely worth the 47 years I waited to learn it.
How is it you don’t have a larger audience is amazing to me. Your lessons are spot on with the theory behind what’s going on. Great stuff. Keep up the good stuff!
I appreciate that!
This one is definitely on my bucket list(it's a BIG list). Thanks for your great videos.
It's great to get some instructions on the Lynyrd songs, they are the real classics of the 70's that have been ignored for too long by the tab and instructional videos.
Man, love how you do your videos. I don't fall asleep as you slow down to show what you're doing. Keeps you on your feet & I think it's better to learn quickly because it's easier to play at the songs speed. Best tutorials I've found. Thanks for taking the time to helps those of us who can use all we can get. Look forward to what's next.If you take suggestions maybe Locomotive Breath by Jethro Tull.
THE BEST mix of song tut + guitar layout \ theory... Much appreciated - Cheers from Seattle 🍻!
Just getting back into playing some Skynyrd and Allman Brothers, etc. and this is just what I needed. I like the way you explain it, putting the lead licks and the chords together. Makes more sense, to me, at least. Very informative. Thanks very much.
👍
Great teaching, watched other videos for this and they were so blabby.. watched urs once and was done.. thank you
By far the best instructional video on this, Thanks Bud.
Great breakdown on the song here! Great job and thanks for sharing!
Excellent tutorial! TY!
thanks for all your help it is one of the best guitar licks to play in a bar awesome job
Thanks for what you do.
Thanks from Bergamo, Italy!!! It's one of my favorite songs ever!!! 😎🎸🤩
I hadn't played this song since February 2020...the last gig my band played before the pandemic. I come by this lesson to revisit the song before rehearsals and find I've not been playing accurately in several places. It's quite nice when you hear someone play it slow and accurately...you can immediately tell it's correct. I love the additional theory talk as well. Thanks for the lesson!
Thanks for your comments! Thanks for watching!!
another great lesson thank you
Great lesson, probably my favorite Skynyrd song, I’m about to get it, thanks🎸👍
Concise, clear, snd to the point. Excellent! Thanks!
Great tone man
Thank you for this!
Excellent lession
Very helpful demonstration and. explanations. Thanks
Great lesson wish you'd show the picking so l could see it just started to play lead, everything helps a rookie thanks
Your awesome !! Thanks for that I needed it
Great tutorial!
wow that was so good- spot on
Thanks for the lesson much appreciated. The most accurate way to play this song. It looks like I have my work cut out for me.
Great... Concise n good explanation 👍🏼🙏🏽❤️
Bro!!! Thanks a ton. Those licks sound extremely hard, but once you slowed it down and explained 🤯
Wow ! That was great , love how you broke it all down , thank you !
Boss gt-001 but nothing special with it. I think the main thing I used was a lot of bass and mid and not much treble, and not too much distortion.
Thanks. Your explanations makes so much more sense than just put your fingers here and here. Great video.
Thanks!
Great lesson!
Fantastic
Have most of their albums on vinyl. Legends !
Great Sound !
NICE. I LIKE HOW YOU JUST DDIDN'T PLAY IT BUT ASSOCIATED THE LICKS WITH THE CHORDS. THANKS!
Awesome, awesome, awesome 👏
Great lesson so much attention to small details
I can't believe you don't have more subscribers. My guess is the majority of players seeking instruction need the "third fret on the fourth string" type of instruction. I am not dogging them. I was there too. But, I am just chiming in to say thank for providing guidance to players who know where the notes are on the fretboard and understand chords, scales, and arpeggios and are just happy to have you give a shorthand sketch for them to fill in to learn these songs. Intermediate type of players. It is frustrating to wade through the beginner videos to get guidance on a song. I paid the lifetime membership on your site and it is well worth it, although I don't use it nearly enough. Thank you for what you do. I sincerely appreciate it. And for you other guys out there. No, I am not a friend or family member of his. I don't know him. This effusive praise is genuine. He is a very valuable resource. We live in time where we have experts giving us their life's work for free. I am 65. It wasn't always this way.
Thanks very much for your comments!! Very nice for you to say! And thanks for your patronage on my website as well. I really appreciate it!
Thanks for the light !!!
Good lesson.
If your goal is to play this song and sound like the recording, this is the guy/site to learn it from. 😎🎸✌Tim
Cool, thanks.
Thanks so much for the explanation of the the D pattern. I'm just a rookie trying to solo and that put it together for me. Big Skynyrd fan too.
Great lesson
👍
Very nice video im pretty sure youre playing it perfectly
very nice job mate
Now I know where to find the best Skynyrd lessons
Fantastic lesson. Thank you. I picked up a few new ways to play and think about HOW I play.
Great to hear! Thank you
You're a good teacher.
You taught we how to play the Breeze licks - thanks !
Thank you great tutorial Steve manchester UK 🤘
Awesome 👍🔥🎸🦅
Good teaching👍
It's good the way you use the names of chords and notes when teaching unlike other teachers using all those numbers. If a student don't know the notes on the neck of the guitar it's time he learned that first before trying to solo
👍
They may be just basic Rock'n'Roll licks, but Gary sure makes them his own in this country-rock classic! Thanks for breaking it down for us. You don't spend precious minutes explaining every single note like some UA-cam teachers do. If people need that much in the way of a finger by finger guide, I would suggest that they are not of a sufficient level of ability to be attempting a difficult piece, and should instead attend to their practising. The skill will come in time and hopefully the videos will still be up to learn from then.
👍 Thanks and yes that's exactly right. There are different target audiences and I try to target those with at least some experience. There are plenty of beginner tutorials out there already.
I can PLAY it close, and i can Show it, but no way could ever explain it like this, Excellent lesson.
Thanks man.
nice playing 👍
I am nowhere near ready to learn this but you are crushing it lol
I was cutting the rug
Down at place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lou
When in walked a man
With a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who
He said, "Hey there, fellow
With the hair colored yellow
Whatcha tryin' to prove?
'Cause that's my woman there
And I'm a man who cares
And this might be all for you
I said, excuse me
I was scared and fearing for my life
I was shaking like a leaf on a tree
'Cause he was lean, mean
Big and bad, Lord
Pointin' that gun on me
"Oh, wait a minute, mister
I didn't even kiss her
Don't want no trouble with you
And I know you don't owe me
But I wish you'd let me
Ask one favor from you"
"Oh, won't you
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
Gimme three steps toward the door?
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps,…
God that is awesome . Wish I could do that
Nice one
Excellent stuff.
Made me subscribed ✌️
Thanks for subbing
6:39 you capture string bending and sliding between notes. well done.
Yeah, well, that was all kinds of excellent.
I can't put my finger on it, but your teaching style is super intelligible to me. I've watched some of my other favorite YT instructors cover this lesson and they don't do it as well as you. Good luck with your channel sir. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Thanks!
@@LEADSOLO What strings are you using to play this?
It's the guys before Gains for me. It's true they get very little mention in the guitar world. Skynyrd will touch the soul. Ronnie conducted that band.
how can i make my slash standard with marshall head sound like yours? standard tuning?
I was cutting the rug in a place called The Jug with a girl named Linda Lou. When in walked a man with a gun in his hand and he was looking for you know who.
He's lookin for that yeller haired fella.
Spoiler - He found my azz about 40 years ago out in Mandarin Fl- Busted me for playing a Les Paul v that other Gibson lol
I went by The Jug a couple months ago man.., it’s just maybe a mile down the road from the VanZant’s house..
Always wished I could play a guitar, but life happens and I never had the chance to learn.., anyway thanks man, you’re spot on👍🏼
I didn't know that place really existed. Cool!
LEADSOLO
Yes sir... it’s still there..wish I could post a picture on here I took..

It’s a different color now, but this is it
As said early. Great tone
Dude, that was awesome. Great teaching style, great playing, great tone. Well done, man.
Great lesson. Question, not sure if someone already asked, but if you can remember, how did you get that Skynyrd tone on this lesson? Did you use a digital patch or did you go analog amp, pedal, etc. Trying to get that tone. thx.
Just digital... Boss gt- 001 effects processor. Direct into my recorder
I have a general question. How do you study or what do you study to know the fretboard was well as you do. It appears that your understanding is a combination of notes, chords, and music theory. That would make a great lesson. Thanks
Actually when I was 10 years old my guitar teacher told me one week to only be able to name the notes on the first three frets when I played the natural note scale. Because I could read music and play it but I didn't know what notes I was playing. Ever since then that habit stuck. My entire life of figuring out solos has had a habit of naming the note in my head as I play it. Because of course I wanted to know how those notes came from the chords. So if you only get in the habit of thinking of the names of the notes after a while they will be automatic. Then you can see what's going on a lot easier. Just stop and work your way up the neck to find the name of the note that you're playing if you don't know it. Thanks for the question and the suggestion
I might not play it perfect but I figured it out. The rhythm at least.
Great tone! Can you say what amp, pedals, settings, etc are?
Sure. Thanks for asking. I have a paragraph about it right near the top of my website page here, where you can read all about it. www.playguitarsolos.com
💯🎸💙
i need lessons please
Plays it well knows his fret board but to and average player its light on notes and technique. Love the video AWESOME BAND! A little slower, call out the notes and explain picking pattern.
agreed
Seriously! I've only been playing two months and I figured it out. Just hum it in your head and keep rewinding it. He tells you everything you need to know.
Well instructed! Thank you!
what amp and effects are you using?
www.playguitarsolos.com/blog. I talk about I it here. Thanks
Is your name Gary Rossington by any chance?
Jesus. You nailed the tone.
Gotta unlearn all the crap I’ve been doing. That was a lightbulb moment for me.
What amp are you playing thru?
the one that amplifies sound
@@ras124 no shit
Fantastic explanation. Sounds great. What gauge strings do you have on this SG? Is it .009, .011, .016, .024, .032, .042?
Yes that's the exact guage. Xtra lite .009....042
Could I get tabs for this song?😊
Sorry I never tabbed them out
How about a lesson on song by Thin Lizzy called Blues Boy?
figure it out yourself
Doesn't Rossington chicken pick the lead???
Pretty sure he does.
"Just to show you what he's doing real slowly, (Let me play it as fast as I can)"...lol
Keep rewinding
That's not fast!!!
Too advanced and fast for my skill level. That being said I still learned a couple of things on the first viewing. Certain to learn more in future views. Thank you for posting, BEST AND PEACE!
Glad to help in any way I can. Yeah I find coming back to things always make them clearer. So if you can pick up something each time you're on your way. I think over my life just about every solo I learned by ear taught me something... And each day I would come back to it it was a lot easier.
Man that amp sounds fuckin yummy.
I swear its like rocket science when somebody is explaining a gituar to me that shit takes alot of practice to get good even decent some are alot better than others always wanted to learn never have ..they make it look so easy its NOT!!
When he talks about how Gary Rossington doesn’t use a pic to play this entire song and yet still there isn’t a damn lesson video
I hadn't heard that but regardless if you want to play it without a pick all you have to do is play the same notes and pick at them with your fingers. And on those double notes you just use your two fingers together at the same time... The notes are the same so there's really nothing different.
Just saw a tutorial on Satyrday Night Special....guy shows the secret...Rossington developed a technique where he tucks the pick between pointer and .middle finger(Warren Haynes does it too)
It's mostly on the double stops...you can really hear the difference on the Saturday Night Special lead....the part with the double stop bends...Hope that helps.....
Did u find the video..its a tutorial on Saturday Night Special...its not the same guy...in the video the guy has a Skynyrd shirt on and long stringy hair
Should call the somg "gimme double stops" .. get it?? Haha 😂
