Wow, I can’t wait to go back there. The train is awesome. We now will have more access to every corner of Asia. Thank you Mario and Olivia. Short brief video but full of good info.
Yes part two please, it is critical for those thinking about moving there to know the landscape, landmark buildings and industrial business parks, keep up the good work guys!
Yes, please do a Part 2 and more on Laos development. Wish lots of success and prosperity for the Laotian people! Hope the China/Laos/Thailand/Malaysia railway will bring lots of development for the peoples of these countries!!!
I traveled through Vientienne a few times when I lived in Chiang Mai to renew my Visa. It had something about it that was very special. Miss that place!
The railway is certainly the most significant new project in Laos. There are certainly pros and cons, but hopefully in the long term this will prove to be a sound investment. I do hear that Singapore has opted out of their part of the extansion southwards though, but hopefully it will still eventually reach Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. Nice realistic informative video.....hope you will do more like this especially when the railway opens. 👍👍😊😊
is not a debt trap. debt trap is by IMF world Bank. thieves. those rail links is for transporting people no for profit. if china get the amount of food to feed 1.4 billions people good enough
Loved the video but not the development! Laos is our favorite country in SE Asia. We want it to progress but hope it will not change so much to be a totally different place. But we need to know what is happening, so please continue with these videos. Good job!
I also don't want Laos to become part of China. Communist governments like the CCP have the bad habit of destroying the religion and culture of the countrys they enter. Not to mention the people.
Hi Mario and Olivia, not too sure about the increase in advertising taking place in your recent blogs. Up until now have really enjoyed your vids, hope you are both well and stay safe.
Hi Stephen, there isn't actually any ads in this video, just a sponsorship with Skillshare. We hope you can understand that we put a lot of time and effort into making these videos and we get paid a very small amount for it, even less now that they tax creators who have USA viewers. The reason we have ads sometimes is so we can spend more time making videos and not both work full time jobs, which if we did, we wouldn't have time to make videos here at all. Hope this makes sense, thanks for watching!
I was there in late 2018....so all I can say is WAT?! The fact that there wasn't a shop like Starbucks was something I always remember. I did see Pumpkin Spice lattes advertised in Luang Prabang tho lol
I would like to see Part 2. I appreciate learning about the "development" happening there. To the extent that it actually helps Lao people, I am happy about it. Personally I am not super excited about it. I don't go to Laos to go to Starbucks or the Intercontinental Hotel or Crowne Plaza. From my home in the USA, I can walk to all of these. Sponsors and advertising are part of the UA-cam game. After all, viewers do not pay anything (at least paying is not mandatory). But please be careful about balancing the number of seconds for advertising/sponsor time vs. total running time of a video. This particular video seems like a fairly high % of total time on advertising/sponsor time.
If you go to the Thai side of the river, across from downtown Vientiane, you get a sort of twightlight zone effect. Like just 5mins from a Capital city centre is farm country. If they ever put a bridge in, someone is going to make a fortune on the Thai side!
Yes! Please share more about the development in Vientiane Capital. I am kinda worried about the future of Laos by investment too much depended on China, an unreliable ally. Also as an environmentalist, the destroy of nature is also one of my concerns.
It is also a trade-off between economy and environment 😞 I believe economic development will bring well-being to Laotian. I have done my master’s thesis in environmental studies of urban wetland development with Laos and will go there for a workshop with my professor. I hope the future of Laos can strike a balance between economy and nature 🙏
It's unbelievable. I have spent a year in Laos in 2010/11 and have visited again in 2016. I doubt I would recognise anything in Vientiane right now. It's probably good for the people but also a bit sad. It's also worrying how much influence China is gaining over Laos.
Why is China’s influence worrying. Why doesn’t your country offer alternative development at lower costs? Don’t complain about others, work harder and do better.
If you actually give a shit about the Laotian tell your country to offer a better deal. Don't the people Laos deserve to live better and progress to better life?

Sadly, most of these huge Chinese buildings remain unfinished or empty. The Covid situation didn't help but nothing was moving fast even before. The train is definitely something that will change/reshape the whole country. Ps: been passing by Latsavong Plaza every day for the last 2 years, never found out why this project seems abandoned. Versy sad though.
Laos has neither the money nor engineering know-how to do those skyscraper buildings, on its own; it's all Chinese. And China (the scamming developers who "won" the right to develop those places) has the habit of not working things through before starting major developments. There literally are dozens of giant malls, sky scraper buildings/developments in China left to rot half way through... when the scamming "developers" run out of money or when permit time expired, or when the local governmental officials don't receive their monthly checks/bribes and they bitch about the "illegal construction." That's how communism and totalitarian societies (like Laos, Vietnam, China, Cuba, North Korea, etc) work. BTW, the Belt & Road project is funded by the Communist Party (all the Chinese people, via taxes) and its closely linked business partners, so it is different from all these malls and residential projects sub-contracted out to scamming developers. The Belt & Road projects in SE Asia, in Central Asia... all the way through & to Western Europe ... are actual economic projects designed by the Central Chinese government to more easily transport raw materials back into China & to allow it to ship out manufactured goods... so that's why the Belt & Road projects are on-going all the time, even if private sub-contractors on these other high rises and malls go out of business all the time, with their half-finished structures left dilapidated all over Africa, Central Europe, SE Asia, and China itself... We lived in Bangkok for 6 years and there were huge hotel projects that stalled for years and appeared to be abandoned projects. However, they eventually came to fruition. I suspect/hope the same will happen in Laos. In fact, by the time I'm writing this, they may have already been completed.
