- The New Super Mario Bros. series is one often criticized for its repetitiveness and not much changing between each sequel. But about a time before this series became the controversial topic that is today? A time when the title of "new" actually meant something. In this video we take a deep dive into the game that started off this ever so notorious series. This is my New Super Mario Bros. DS retrospective

Aw man, you’re a blue shell hater. There’s nothing better in this game than completing a level entirely inside of the blue shell. Pure bliss
Such a shame it never returned, it's my favorite item of perhaps the entire series. Then again, it makes this game more special and worth replaying.
As a kid I absolutely loved speeding through levels in the shell. I also loved the mini mushroom to such a degree that oftentimes if I died with it, I'd go find a toad house/red block/other level to get a new one
@@mario64remix It's kind of hard to control which is why I prefer the Penguin Suit. The Blue Shell is still a great power-up, though. I just wish it got used more.
FRRRR IT'S SO FUNN
its fun and all but in most level you literally cant use it its so easy to loose😭
My favorite part of Mario bros DS is that it actually has unique and interesting bosses and it is like the only 2D Mario game to have that. It’s really sad that super princess peach has better bosses than 90% of 2D Mario games
Yeah, that's the one area that the first NSMB beats every other 2D Mario game in, even Wonder, as amazing as that game is.
The Mario Land games also had unique bosses, but IMO NSMB's bosses are a lot more fleshed out. Monty Tank is the GOAT!
What about super princess peach 2? (It’s just princess peach showtime but 1, i just wanted to see anyone’s input, and 2, it practically is. Plus 3, I haven’t played it so as I said, I would like anyone’s input if they HAVE played it. I’m not even sure if there is any bosses at all.)
I still think new super Mario Bros is better
Super mario bros 2 has unique bosses too.
I still remember beating the final boss as mini mario just to see what would happen, and if Peach would crouch down or something for the kiss because of how short he is.
(My disappointment was immeasurable when he just randomly turned into small mario for it)
XD
While I see people’s points I still feel like each new super Mario bros game had an identity and were all good games, honestly I think the only problem with the series is how close each game came out and that nsmbU was pretty much the Wii U’s only launch title
I gotta respectfully disagree. I’d say NSMB DS, Wii, and even 2 have their own identities. DS was the first one and it included the Mega Mushroom and Shell power up, both of which never came back in any of the other NSMB games. NSMB Wii was the first 2D Mario game to have 4 player multiplayer, and at least NSMB 2 had the coin gimmick, as pointless as it was. I feel NSMBU doesn’t really have many new features that stand out besides the baby Yoshi’s having their own new mechanics. I guess there was the P-Acorn as well and Nabbit
@@JGr2000 Wait, but you suggest you are agreeing with him.
Words can't express how much this game means to me. I've 100%ed it so many times and it always just feels like revisiting an old friend every time. I remember getting my first ever red ds lite with this game already in it and just having my mind blown playing it for the first time. A true classic that has passed the test of time.
10:24 And the fact that a star coin is located there makes it obvious that it was purposefully made to be easy to find.
I still remember playing this game for the 1st time.
One thing I can say about this game that sets it aside from it's later releases is that at least NSMB was the 1st to try all of these gimmicks out. For this reason; I still think that it is easily better than a lot of the games that released after it (with the 'New') title.
Also, this was one of those games that you _had_ to play on the DS when it came out. If you had this game in school; you were definitely one of the cool kids for sure
I like how unique DS was, really disappointed that the sequels never followed up with that. At least U had some great level design
I still didn’t really care about U because it’s basically Wii with a HD filter.
You mean Luigi U, right?
No other game could replicate the feeling of New than the original DS
When Mike goes outside, the NSMB snow music plays.
Minigames were such a w by the way
Wait, but NSMB doesn’t have a snow theme.
I love how NSMBWii Overworld plays over the NSMB one at around 4:20 lol
The first NSMB game I played was NSMB2. I got the game for Christmas in 2012 and i really enjoyed it. In 2013 i saw a friend that had the Original NSMB for the DS, i gave it a try and i really enjoyed it causing me to want my own copy of the game. In 2021 i downloaded the game on emulator, i completed it and it was far enjoyable than NSMB2 and NSMBU. NSMBWii was also awesome but it was basically NSMBDS with updated stuff and newer features. I remember NSMBWii was the first NSMB game i saw in 2011 because i noticed people playing it. NSMBDS, NSMBWii and NSMB2 are my childhood NSMB games.
Super Mario Bros DS, aka our generation first introduction to gambling
Mario 64 DS
This. Is a crowning accomplishment. It might seem simple, but this deep dive is honestly one of your best videos. Ironically, despite talking about a usually generic game, your word choice was varied, your ideas unique, and your editing and music PHENOMENAL and I immediately took out my DS to go back to the game. WELL DONE MIKE!
Also ps. MOUNT WARIO!
Forgive me for what I am about to do...
As someone who started playing NSMB DS for the first time, this video came out at the perfect time. Another great video Mariomikester, keep it up
Was my first video game, and one of my favourites too. I didn't even play the game when Mario Vs. Luigi was still playable, the servers were shut down when I first played it. And I still loved it.
Your vids are great!! I’m gonna sit down and watch the video rn :D
The blue shell is easy to use you just have a major skill issue and the world 1-2 secert exit wasn't a copy paste it's called a reference, but other than that neat video.
19:25 i can agree, me and my mom where so addicted to it, then when i got Mario 64 for the ds i gambled a lot on those rec room slots, i keplt betting 3 coins at a time.
You can instantly stop your momentum with the blue shell by letting go of the run button, then quickly press down then up on the d pad. This should start a ground pound, stopping all your forward momentum, and pressing up cancels the ground pound so you now can maneuver normally all in a blink of an eye. The blue shell has its ups and downs for sure but once you have a good grip on the maneuverability in this game you can definitely minimize its downsides as well as amplifying its strengths
I love the ds game and the 3ds game they were my favorite games to play when i was younger
If you really like it, you can always play ROM hacks like Newer Super Mario Bros DS. I currently play it on my DS using a R4. It's incredible how amazing it is, but also how underrated, because of how much ROM hacks are still a small niche.
Mariomikster: blue shell is not my favorite powerup
Me: cries in the corner
Ah one of my first games I got when I got my first gaming device, the ds. Genuinely was a joy back in the day.
Hearing that NSMBU came out in 2013 made me rethink life for a moment there.
It would be nice if a mainline Mario game would have another villain besides Bowser again. Even bringing back someone like Wart or even Tatanga would be quite the Refresher. It would be so cool if there was a new Mario game where we got to return to Sarasaland and get to see what it looks like with color
Bring back Wario!
It has been a problem in most of the modern series including spinoffs(except miracuously Paper Mario). The series was genuinely better when he was a sidevillain or simply a surprise final boss(He essencially outlived the SMB1/3/M64 days where he was the villain focus), but newer games have forced him into the main villain role consistently for no good reason.
23:31 that low quality ds voice nostalgia goes hard 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I find it really really weird that you didn't mention 2 of the worlds are locked behind defeating bosses as Mini Mario.
A bit of a high skill level for a general audience to lock 2 entire worlds behind, imo. And you have to be paying attention to even spot the hint for it. I never knew that was how until seeing UA-cam videos on it
This is actually one of my favorite Mario games. It’s actually unique compared to the other NSMB games.
That editing at the end to sync with the music was amazing
My DS is 13 years old I have that DS game for all these 13 years old and both still work,I love it so much that I mesmerized all secrets and coins to the point I 100% completed the game around 7 times throughout these years
The way he goes down the list of the worlds in the game is the exact same order as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It’s so clever and well hidden if you’ve never played it before. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, play the game and you’ll understand.
Hmm.
This game is still peak amongst 2d mario. Cool power ups, secret exits, entire worlds locked behind finding cannons or by beating bosses as mini mario. Also the level design wasn't meant to be a 4 player game, so it could be alot more focused and unique.
It's funny how Sonic can put out more mainline releases more frequently than mario despite the quality struggle
To be fair, almost every Sonic game is absolute garbage. Whereas while the later NSMB games may have felt repetitive, they were still well-designed and fun to play.
@@itsmeike For every 2 misses there was a hit
And they at least tried to be different
1:30 Actually NSMB's development started back in 2004, not 2005.
You can quickly release the dash button and then press it again while running in the shell to make him leave it, or to mostly run without him entering it.
Also the world 2-3 theme returned in nsmbWii
NSMB on ds was pretty good. Hell, it was great for a return to 2d Mario. I have no idea why the following games were heavily based on its graphics and art style. None of the following games couldn't work on ds with a few tweaks.
Was never into the handhelds, so it was a huge gap for me from Mario World to NSMB Wii.
This first entry in the series looks amazing though, wish they would remake it for Switch or Switch 2.
This is probably the most special game to me it was the first game I ever played and I love it to bits listening to the music makes me feel like I’m a kid again.
Happy 18th anniversary to this game!! One of my favorite and one I happen to share a birthday with! =)
I always LOVED playing Mario Bros DS and SM64DS when i was younger and i remember beating Mario Bros DS literally once a month which now whenever i touch it, it gives Nostalgia and love for the 2000's Gaming. I still play SM64 DS and speedrun it now, but Mario Bros DS hits hard whenever i play it.
the koopa shell is so fun
The mikester releasing a vid on the national holiday of 420 is superb
Agreed fully 😆 💨
To be honest, this is the best new super Mario Bros game not only do the levels have good consistency but also I love the new power ups the blue shell was honestly really fun, same with the mega mushroom I also love the games bosses and it’s a great 2d Mario game it also makes good use of the ds’s controls, considering that Console only had a D pad and this is the perfect game for it. And it’s just a great Mario game this game and super Mario wonder are my favorite to the Mario games
I 100% it about 2 days ago. I love this game. Even though it came out a year after I was born. Still loved it as i played it on my DSI to death
Real one knew that if you held down the L and R buttons you could play as Luigi
This game is not my favorite in the "new" series but it was an okay game. At least the boss battles were good in this one. The game is too easy and it's one of the only Mario games with no secret world.
I’ve never been a member before and I’m so happy! Thx
Yep. This game definitely sparks memories. It was one of the first DS games I owned.
your videos are actually so entertaining, please never stop
grew up with these games but Wonder smashed them honestly, still have fun with them but Wonder is levels ahead of these games
I think Wonder beats every New game except for DS, because of the unique bosses and mini games. The only boss Wonder has was Bowser Jr.
@@traviscunningham7062 i can understand that but tbh i've never put a ton of importance on bosses in games, just want a game i can come back to and enjoy everytime so wonder is more for me tbh, the wonder flowers spice it up so well
This was one of the games I spent the most time with on my DS back in the day. Right up there with Kirby's Canvas Curse and Pokémon Gen 4!
Because you didn't mention: The morty tank is a inspired by the morty tank in sunshine
I really love this games, just simple and fun
Newer smb really fixed the issue of automatically entering the shell while running
I LOVE this game so much.. so nostalgic 🫶🏻
Great day when mike uploads
You shall do a classic mario retrospective (like yoshis island, super mario world, mario 3 etc)
I'd love to hear your opinions on these games
21:55 i wonder if that mechanic was inspired by the original princess peach game. There are levels in Bowser's villa that you had to flip rooms like that to navigate around
DS is the only New Super Mario Bros game that I fully enjoyed because it was new and unique. Later series don't even come close of being new & unique.
Banger game
I love New Super Mario Bros DS it is one of the best games ever. the vs mode and the minigames are making it compleet
Makes me sad to think that Nintendo will likely never use these characters for boss battles again considering they'll either rehash the ones from the wii or just carry some of them over from 3d land or 3d world which yeah they are also fun battles but they don't hold a candle to the DS versions as to how fun they are. I still have this game for my 3ds and out of all the games that I have from PlayStation xbox and Nintendo this is the very first mario game I ever played from start to finish and it still holds up very well and it's controls are amazing
Great and deep video! Nowadays looks like every opinion is in extremes (Love or Hate). The New series is not a trash and Wonder it is not perfect.
Much like how millennials grew up playing the original nes Super Nintendo Mario games this was the version of Mario us Gen Z kids grew up with and for many kids growing up in the mid to late 2000s and early 2010s this was our introduction to Mario
i used to love playing super mario so much... good times
I can still go back to NSMB DS and Wii and have a great time, whereas after playing Mario Wonder, I have no desire to play NSMB2 or U. They’re just so bland, unoriginal, and boring
I just finished NSLU that one is actually challenging and good but NSMB2 and NSMBU i will never play again because they so bland
This was my childhood mario game along with mkwii.
You've already done a new super Mario bros DS retrospective....
any chance you’ll do a video on Donkey Kong as well?
mario world had both the jungle and mountain themes, so there’s no original world themes in this game. it’s fine though, they weren’t done to death yet
Super Mario World had forests, not jungles. Forests aren’t filled to the brim with grape juice.
@@hypanusamericanus9058 its called the forest of illusion yes, but it is essentially the same as the jungle, featuring classic jungle elements like wigglers. i don’t think its fair to call the jungle theme from nsmb “new” when the forest of illusion was so similar
@@ninshu9073 All jokes aside, the forest aesthetic and the Wigglers are the only things I would really call similar between these two worlds. NSMB really leans into the theming with its strange enemies and gimmicks, like vines, Scuttlebugs, and Dorries.
@@hypanusamericanus9058 it’s certainly more unique and pronounced in nsmb yeah
I'm glad you're back
It's beem a while
the ammount of content this game has is crazy like they didn't have to make some of the stuff but they did and that's why i love this game tho i wish we say fire bros more their attack pattern was interesting and they looked cooler than boomer bro
if the new super mario series was just the ds game and maybe new super mario bros 2 it would have been viewed much better today
replace nsmb2 with nsmbwii and I agree with you
i bought a r4 card w a bunch of ds games and i found a version of the new super mario ds game i’ve never seen before. everything about it looks js like the one im used to but when you start playing everything is diff including the music. I tried to look for a walkthrough of the game since it’s difficult to get past the first level but i can’t find any info that it even exists. ik it’s probably js me bc everything ab it seems legit but i was hoping someone could help me figure out exactly what is it’s called since everything including the title and main menu looks js like the regular new super mario for ds
New Super Mario Bros Wii, 3DS And U makes sonic 4 look like a masterpiece 😂
Nope wii and U aren't even CLOSE TO SONIC 4 but yeahh nsmb2 is one of the worst 2d marios
7:02 glazing
hey Mike it's me, nice video!
9:21 wasn’t there something in Mario odyssey
The leaks where true 😊🐡✈️🏙️🏙️🐶🥰
🐡
I like it because I played it as a lid
NSMB and NSMB Wii are great; NSMB2 and NSMB-U are mostly a snoozefest, despite U being the first HD Mario game.
Plus, the "New" theme in Mario Maker doesn't have all the cool gimmicks like the giant mushroom or the huge wiggler, many of the enemies like boxing ghosts, etc.
Brilliant video!
There’s only one reason I prefer nsmb wii, it’s because nsmb ds is way too easy. If that was changed then I’d go ds all the way.
8:22 funny coin number
Playing on “official hardware” again Mike?
This was my first 2d mario as a 2000’s kid and the only thing I disagree with is that the mario mushroom was lame and the blue shell is the power up ever
nowadays mario legit doesn't support any gameplay style other than go cherry slow on top.
kizu mario is good, just get good at the game. (the japanese mario 2 is literally DLC before DLC for mario 1.)
Well that's an opinion you don’t normally come across. Are you a troll?
SMB was revolutionary and is still a decent game, but you have to admit that it is seriously barebones compared to more modern Mario titles. That's why it usually places fairly low on Mario game rankings.
Everyone hates SMB2 not simply because it is hard but also because of its unintuitive, unfair, and terrible level design. Levels in other games, like those in World 9 from NSMBWii and NSMBU, may be unforgivingly difficult, but at least they don't try to cheat you out of winning.
If you want to go fast, the 2D games still give you the option through the help of secret exits and warps. That's the beauty of Mario games; they allow you to progress at your own pace with your own difficulty standards. You want to avoid those overpowered power-ups? Go ahead. You want to challenge yourself with the most difficult levels? Sure, but they’ll probably be optional because Mario games are for everyone to enjoy.
@@hypanusamericanus9058 to me mario 1 was better, since it had physics but the game was better than the other mario games didn't give players the ability to actually have a challenge.
@@SansINess53 SMB has terrible physics; Mario moves around jerkily, like a robot.
Sure, SMB has challenge, but when games like SMB3 exist it's hard to argue that other Mario games offer less of a challenge. Amongst Mario games that are singled out for their difficulty, SMB is never among them.
@@hypanusamericanus9058 not really, it's better to me.
@@SansINess53 That's fine. Sorry for accusing you of being a troll earlier. I guess I wasn’t thinking through my comment clearly enough.
But how did you manage to get past World 8 of SMB3, assuming you have indeed played the game?
14:34 doesnt forest of illusion count?
This game was my fucking childhood. No better New super Mario game in my opinion however I don't think it's my favorite 2d Mario. I also have yet to play Wonder.

Do you not play the old mario games? You make all these mario videos but you don’t seem to play any games from the first twenty years
Didn't you make this video alreayd?
You cant really give points to NSMB for the side modes because those are ripped straight from 64DS.
Actually, not all of them are ripped from 64 DS. There's some unique ones.
And they received some visual upgrades as well.
8:39 nsmbw has a level like this, but this level is better
I enjoyed the tighter platforming and puzzles in the NSMB version of the sewer level, but the potted Piranha Plants in the Wii version were fun too.
poor ol nsmbw, its irrelevent now
I would definitely not call it irrelevant. The music from that game is fairly popular online and its modding community is one of the strongest out of all the Mario titles.
@@hypanusamericanus9058 ohh ok I have played newer smbw and it's azing
