I’d pretty sure it’s called 2 because it’s meant to be a direct sequel to the DS game, whereas U is a sequel to Wii
My thoughts exactly.
You sure? Lol
@@zeroxenoverse9251 Alparently Super Mario 3 is a sequel to Super Mario Bross and Super Mario Bross 2: The Lost Levels (not Doki Doki Panic).
And appaeently Super Mario World is a sequel of Super Mario Bross 3.
Obviously.
Yeah but 3 would have made more sense. Especially because of the fact that the game has the tanooki leaf. The powerup from *Super Mario Bros. 3*
Which is ironic because it's generally far more similar to the Wii game than the DS one.
Character-wise, the coin collecting gimmick would work better with Wario.
Yeah it would even fit with its original name being New Super Mario Bros GOLD
Good one, it would have made even more sense
well then it would be just wario land, because thats literally what its about
That’s genius, you should work at Nintendo
Like someone else said it would be like Wario land
I played this game so often when I was a kid. I always saw the cannons but never understood their function. Then one day I saw a video of GameXPlain (xD) playing the cannon-level and it was awesome🤣 Btw this was a very good video!
Me to! Most underrated GAME of all time
Yeah it’s a decent game, pretty fun to go back to every now and then but personally I prefer 3d land
Same!
Dude same. Love how we all had the same questions
@@Joosher56 3D Land is pretty good
i still believe this game has some of the best level design in the series. if it only had original level aesthetics i believe itd be held as one of the best.
Yeah it had some good level Designs
But reusing assets is cheaper
My favorite was all of the very diverse backgrounds
I loved this game! Although the levels had a bunch of reused aspects, the level design itself was really good and it’s a lot of fun just to blaze through it
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is pretty solid actually. I really like the new dry goombas and piranha plants as well as the snake blocks present in a lot of levels. It's cool to see snake blocks in world 1, for example.
The level design is quite creative, especially in Worlds Mushroom, Flower, and Star. I'm surprised more people don't talk about the golden totem level in World 2 more. That's right up there with the sewer levels from DS and Wii and the Van Gogh levels from NSMBU and NSLU in terms of aesthetic. Also, the flashing clown car with the Koopalings that can turn you to stone in the final castle and the Star world castle is so unique. And I like the auto runner cannon levels.
Really, my only issue with the game is that it's much too easy.
Did you try any of the dlc levels? You'll wanna Smash your 2ds lmao
@@greenkoopa Oh, yeah, I beat every pack except the impossible pack. I can beat the first underwater level pretty consistently, but I've only beaten the second level once or twice. I've never made it past the third level.
AND THEY NEVER USE THE DRY GOOMBAS AGAIN!!!
@@marianokaz1503 Dry Gomba's??
@@StevenJones851 The blue ones that have skulls on them.
As a recent WR holder for the NSMB2 100% category, it is a very addictive game!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like this game could have been more, but Nintendo just didn’t push it enough. Also, I feel like the gold gimmick removes the idea of risk - it is basically impossible to get a game over.
BTW - you seriously need more subs and views. Your videos are awesome and very professional!
I really enjoyed new super mario bros 2, there were many nights I'd crack open my 3ds while my parents were asleep and just, have fun. I remember when I finally got those 90 star coins and unlocked the star world, I had been looking forever for levels that had star coins that I didn't collect. And that one night when I discovered an infinite lives method, it was amazing. As for the name, I feel like 2 means 2nd new super mario bros game on a ds, not in the series.
great video, i don't remember much about playing this game but all i remember is i loved the coin collecting and final battle, i guess i never beat world 9 when I played it and i kinda regret that now because that final level looks insane
I always loved this game, cool to see I'm not alone.
I also very love your videos! You explain very well your points :)
Another notable thing about this game that I discussed with my cousin recently is that yeah, the scenery and atmosphere is really similar to NSMB WII’s, it makes up for it by being *much* more colourful and vibrant, which I actually enjoy seeing. The most obvious comparison in contrast for me is the in game backgrounds of the snowy areas. Wii’s is kinda grey and bleak like it would be in real life, 2’s made use of all sorts of different shades of blue. Great video, thanks for making it!
New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the only NSMB Game where Mario could look Up.
I think some people were just salty we got two NSMB games in one year. I think they would have gotten a better reputation if not for that. But these games are over 10 years old now, and I think it's time for Nintendo to revisit this sub-series for a new installment.
New Super Mario Bros 2 feels like it was titled at last second, it should've been named Super Mario: Treasure Rush and also have a different plot then same overused save the girl plot. It's main selling point was coins but the game had absolutely no reason for these bits of yellow other than a quick gimmick.
The original name for the game was apparently “New Super Mario Bros Gold”.
You made a 20 minutes long video feel like a hour straight documentary
I really enjoyed the release of NSMB2 after playing tons of the original NSMB DS when I was 13.
8 years later, while it's infamous for the lack of originality I still find it fun, appreciate the art style, and the accapella remixes.
This Game was my Childhood, I remember me and my friends racing to complete the game first, some of my best Memories!
Not even nostalgia can defend this game for me because I thought it was bad when i was 10💀
Next 2d Mario game needs unlockable outfits that do things or characters that you get by earning and spending a lot of coins
I Will always prefer DS Castle soundtrack rather than the song that appears since Wii. But the final boss soundtrack since Wii is gorgeous
The New Super Mario Bros. 2, along with Sonic Generations and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, is the game that got me to ask for a Nintendo 3DS for Christmas in 2012. And I enjoyed all three (Mario is the only one of them I have beaten).
This game was my first serious game in general, not to mention my first Mario game, so I have a lot of nostalgia for it
This was my favorite new super Mario bros game. I still remember not knowing at all that this game even existed until I saw a 2ds bundled with it. I lost my mind when I figured out that there was one of them on 3ds.
I will now use Kamek's basement as a euphemism for hell from now on.
I know the map themes for World Mushroom, Flower, and Star are one of the few original tracks of this game, but what is the fourth original track? It cannot be the red toad house theme as that was ripped from Super Mario 3D Land.
I think it’s the Koopaling boss theme.
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 No, that one is ripped from New Soup Wii.
Yet another banger of a video, keep up the good work!
Am I the only one impressed by the graphics of this game?
I feel like it was nice and vibrant for a 3DS title. And I will say some backgrounds were better than the Wii version.
They don't look as good as the wii or wii u
@@devin2445 yeah but the wii & wiiu are much more powerfull than the 3ds
@@devin2445 makes no sense, it's like not able to say anything good about any old game because there'll always be an pc with extreme super hd graphics.
This was an amazing video. The best and most relatable take I’ve seen. On one side I think it’s lack of originality is upsetting, and I hate how they took the Koopalings (my favorite Mario characters) and gave them lame uninspired fights. But in the other hand, I love busting out my 3ds and doing some coin collecting. It’s a fun game, really. I think 7/10 is the the friggin perfect score for this game. Bravo amazing vid
this was my first ever mario game comparing it to U weegee U and new (nsmb1) its an amazing game
It’s weird hearing a UA-camr say that their childhood game was a game I also grew up with cause it reminds me that I am now an adult
How do you think it feels for those of us who went to the store and bought Super Mario Bros, by unhanging it from its hang tab?
i remember getting 10k coins in the gold classics pack. it was the only one i had. but i had to be a young dumb and write over it with a smaller coin count...
This game was my childhood. 😭😭 I remember begging my friend how to unlock Luigi
I do like it a little better than 3D Land since it has a couple more things you can do.
0:36 I always called them NSMB DS, NSMB Wii, and NSMB 3Ds. Way easier to tell them apart and I’m surprised Nintendo didn’t do this, sounds like something they’d do
I just got the gold edition and I love the coin rush levels!
8:52 I wasn't looking and thought you got confused with Sonic then I looked and saw what you were talking about...dang it looks like a Sonic ring lmao
I like to think it's called NSMB2 as a reference to the original Mario Bros 2, seeing as that was also the third game in the series
Something random that bothers me about this game is that world 4 has an underwater level… in a coral reef. Not only should the water freeze over in that type of world, but that’s much too cold for coral to properly survive in. Also, this appears to be a winter wonderland sort of world, so there should be no saltwater in sight for tropical reefs to thrive in.
They copied the underwater backgrounds from other worlds and tarnished the realism of that level when they could’ve actually been original, and made an underwater level with a more icy aesthetic, perhaps one where you’re swimming between chunks of ice floating in the cold water.
Also, something you didn’t mention is that this game didn’t offer much in terms of new enemies for the NSMB series. A lot of new enemies that were added were just variants, like bone Goombas and piranha plants, baby urchins, and Boohemoth. No truly original enemies like Wii’s Huckit Crabs, Bramballs, Bulbers, Scaredy Rats, and Jellybeams, or U’s Waddlewings, Flipruses, and Grrols (although, those behave much like spike balls). Still, Wii and U did a much better job at reintroducing old, less used enemies to the series, and adding a few new ones.
This particular game was my childhood. Mario Wonder brings me back
the models in this game look better than any other!
Tbh, New Super Mario Bros. 2 was a great game and I loved it so much.
It was one of the first games I played before the Wii and Wii U of New Super Mario Bros.
I only ever beat the Wii U, with no 100%, and twice on New Super Mario Bros. 2 by going through the first time solo, with 100%, then playing 2 player with my older brother with again 100%.
It was the only best memories I had of it.
I never had an issue with the 2d Mario games reusing music on World 1 and the same with World 2. It would have made it feel weird to me since it was the only two worlds I got stuck on every time.
This is my favorite game in the series 👀
Solid fun platformer to pick up and play
This game is a big slap in the face to Wario Land
as the self proclaimed biggest NSMB2 fan (i got the max coin counter and everything) its honestly a really solid direct sequel to NSMBDS, it feels like they went back to what made that game so unique and added their own spin on it and thats pretty cool
I wish they added the coin collecting gimmick in Mario wonder
It really says a lot that when I used one of the remixed songs of this game in a UA-cam video I got claimed for the Wii version. Not even Nintendo could distinguish between the two games.
As a person who 100% the game as a kid, i had fun with it. I still do to this day when i pick up my 3ds and decide to play a simple 2d platform. Emphasis on the "Simple"
Short answer: No.
The only reason the NSMB series is hated is that they overuse the themes too much, which is a valid criticism, but it doesn’t change the fact that they’re good games.
(Not to mention how over-hated they are.)
NSMB2 is the sequel of NSMBDS and NSMBU is the sequel of NSMBWII. This is why the mega mushroom is only seen on the DS family and the propeller mushroom is only seen on the WII and WII U. The DS and WII NSMB games are their own series.
I'd argue 2 is the best, while yes themes do return its a lot more rounded out than it was in wii and ds like the megamushroom is actually clearly used and isn't an underwhelming gimmick and this might be the only one where the mini mushroom actually has a neat level based around it yes there's the generic level themes like 1-4 is the sky but if I get this correctly its also where the gold rings are introduced plus the coins are fun to collect
2s the best? Are you serious? The abundance of coins trivialised the game, reducing any presence of a challenge. Your points about the megamushroom and mini mushroom are very insignificant. You may have enjoyed subjectively but objectively it is by far the worst
Although i love 2 it's not really the best i'd placed it in C tier if i was ranking it
@@rajgus7638 i mean life's were never a problem in any if the new super games you didn't really get punishes for getting a game over so getting life's easily isn't really a fair critism to me plus like I said the levels are wayyy more rounded out and unique but that's my opinion
@@Raddish-IS-Radd OK thats true, lives were never really a problem before. Yes it's still your opinion but I'm still baffled at how you think it's the best. I can reasonably understand you liking the levels more than ds and wii, there are some cool gimmicks and design elements but it still pales in comparison to U and LuigiU
@@rajgus7638 idk maybe because 2 was the first one I 100% completed (so I had played it the most), but I found luigi u a little boring for all the complaints the games get for reusing stuff luigi u doesn't do much different aside from the levels which i understand why people like them, they just don't leave much of an impression because as soon as something cool happens the level is over, 2 has that perfect balance for me I wanna nab as many coins as possible it has the best gimmick levels, best special levels and best replay value (aside from gaining all the star coins), and that's at least something different with this game compared to the rest of them although yes luigi u is better at having a personality because of the unique levels and the luigi physics, I still like nsmb 2 simply because the coins are fun to get and like I said it has the most replay value but I mean it's your opinion if you like luigi u go ahead and like it I just think 2 is better at most of the things the other games do (although all them have their own strengths and weaknesses)
Would you ever consider covering the Newer hack for Wii? Ik it's unofficial, but it would still be interesting!
Only the first 2, not the 10.000 ones repeatedly....
I don’t think any of the new soup games are bad I just think people just got bored of them
Have you played NSMBU? That has to be one of the worst Mario games I've played. I constantly replay the other nsmb games, but nsmbu is just awful.. the level design is so empty to focus on 4 player and it didn't introduce anything.
I know that the main gimmick of this game is collecting coins, but honestly, the speedrun category should be Low% instead of Any%. What’s the point of even collecting coins if all you get is a new title screen
Maybe it’s just me, but I LOVED that the soundtrack was pulled from NSMB Wii! When the game first came out, obviously Switch didn’t exist yet, so the 3DS/DS was my only handheld. I felt like I had a handheld version of NSMB Wii with this game! Now that NSMB U Deluxe exists on Switch, some of that special handheld magic for this game is definitely less, but it was great for younger me!
15:00 Also in world star, Star coins were changed to Moon Coins 🌙
Way before Odyssey
I would always refer to this game as just New Super Mario Bros: Coins
This Game Clearly Showed what new Ideas can Bring to a Game the Basic Gimmick being the Same but with a New Power up in that Series that really only feels like that exact thing the Gold Flower being it’s main new Power up to Crush the Money bosses next I bet it’s New Super Mario Bros Bussiness Edition be the Next in the Series
I think NSMB2 just came out at the exact time people got tired of the same NSMB formula.
I remember playing new super Mario mods 2 on the 3DS a lot when i was younger. It was great
The best in the NSMB series IMO. Gold Mario, Tanooki suit, coins coins and more coins, it’s an absolute blast!
Nintendo found the perfect formula for 2D Mario with the “New” series, so the fact that they’re all similar games is something I generally regard as a good thing.
It’s just a shame that this one can’t be played on the big screen in co-op like the others can.
take a shot every time this dude gets hit by an enemy in this video
I was like 6 at Disney world when this game came out, bugged my parents about it the whole trip🤣 beat the game before we even got home from the trip!
I love playing this game when I was 7 years old it was so much fun now I just think it’s decent
Come on Nintendo, give us New Super Mario Bros All Stars for the Switch all ready.
One of my favorite 3ds games
Kinda like how Nintendo just created super mario bros 2 when it was the 3rd mario game on the NES
I think the games do blend in but I also think they are all fun. It's just that I wish they did more with them. Like the wii brought in 4 player Co op. The 3ds brought many coins.... K. And then the wiiu brought HD graphics......
damn, i never played this game but ive played nsmb wii and & wii u. I definitely should give this game a try! Awesome video as always
be sure to give ds and luigi u a try, in my opinion they're the best in the series
This game was my childhood
It was honestly golden.
*crickets*
I got a spesial edition 2ds with this game, which is the reason this is my favorite Mario game (it was my first Mario game ever)
I wish I could know if there was an alternate universe that had a more unique concept for this game.
They should have added Wario as a extra dlc character
NsmbDS, Wii and U all brought unique ideas to the series, however, nsmb 2 brought practically nothing new to the series at all. The majority of the stuff, even the sound track, was ripped straight from wii and we don't even get introduced to the one new power up (which barely shows up throughout the entire game) in the game until world 2. Nsmb 2 isn't bad, it's just very disappointing and mediocre. Coin rush was fun though.
I remember only like 2 or 3 stages had the new fire gold Mario power up that turns block into coins. I was disappointed with this one because I remember the one for DS was more fun especially the mini games.
This game is still nostalgic by the way 🥺
I prefer to think that Mario and Luigi are 1 million coins in debt and that’s why Nintendo set us this 1 million coin challenge
0:37 they just could have called it New Super Mario Bros. 3DS
That's the best looking new super mario bros game
The reason why the levels are bad and short is because the devs spend more time on the *visual effects*
People were expecting too much, it's a good game, I got it in 2018 and my only console was 3ds, I liked the game and 100% it, it's mario on 3ds with a few unique features
World mushroom , fire Flower and star had the best levels and secret exits. But the other 2/3 were forgettable.
3:59
my younger self feels called out
I have so much nostalgia for new soup 2
The giant Mushroom last a couple of seconds and is only in a few levels
as far as ive heard they had a new unexperienced dev team on nsmb2 while the main team focused on nsmbu, so you can see why everything felt a bit weird
It’s not that bad. But this is a pet peeve of mine. It’s a game about collecting so many gold coins, and yet Wario is nowhere to be seen. Golden Opportunity lost.
It's called New Super Mario Bros 2 because it's the second NSMB game on a handheld
Thank you for pronouncing “brothers” correctly
Ya I'm like it has a "Quick Save" but it'll just disappear once you resume your game?
Staring you over from the beginning? 😭
Bro was hitting the griddy 💀
Apparently, it's called New Super Mario Bros. 2 because it's a direct sequel to the DS game. And U is a sequel to Wii
Probably Nintendo made this game as the “sequel” since mario can’t spin jump nor do the spins in mid air & New Super Mario Bros Wii is like the 3rd game with new power ups & abilities.
I didnt even bother asking for this game as a kid as soon as i found out that mario vs luigi and mini-games weren't in the game. Like cmon, who wouldn't wanna do child friendly gambling with luigi all over again?
Bro this vid was very good you deserve more subs
coin fish
Hey! Xenoblade did the same thing with the titles. You get XC2, but it's the 3rd entry.
As much as the New Super Mario series bores me, I gotta admit: the coin mechanic in this game looks fun.
I remember I beat this game the day I got it
