DON'T EAT FISH From the NESHAMINY CREEK...!!!

  • In this EPF Episode, I talk about the recent findings concerning the Neshaminy Creek in Bucks County, PA. Be advised: do not eat fish from the Neshaminy Creek Basin. According to the PA Fish & Boat Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection, the entire Basin contain traces of PFOS (Perfluorooctane Sulfonate).
    [October 14th, 2021 (Fishing Session Number 76)]
    Read more about it below:
    Did you know that...?
☣️...Nobody knows how long the Neshaminy Creek Basin has been contaminated with PFOS. Personally, I have been eating fish from that Creek since 2012. 😅 Thankfully, the annual amount of fishes that I have consumed from there were very low (less than five fishes per year; less than 12 inches per fish). The lesson of the day?! Limit consumption of recreationally caught sport fish, since many waterways in the USA are still untested [and possibly unsafe/polluted].
☣️...Below are the hyperlinks of the articles/websites that were portrayed in the video:
    PA Fish Consumption Guidelines: bit.ly/3pa35PI
Department of Health Brochure on PFOS and PFAS: bit.ly/3FSz6lS
Department of Environmental Protection's Announcement on the Neshaminy Creek: bit.ly/3D66Ri7
☣️...Every state in the United States of America has its own Fish Consumption Advisories and Guidelines. These are usually posted online by different wildlife and/or environmental protection agencies. Before taking any fish home for human consumption, always make sure to read on your state's advisories and guidelines!!! This way, you can make sure that you are not unknowingly poisoning/endangering the health of your loved ones (or your own health as well).

A lot of the PFAS pollution in the nesh creek comes from the Willow Grove Naval Airbase (which is now closed) and the old Johnsville NADC which is now Warminster community park. It comes from the fire fighting foam that used to be used which is now in the ground and ground water. So the tributaries in the area carried it into the nesh creek. The ground water in Horsham and Warminster townships is not drinkable

@@jlen82 correct. By saying it was closed I just meant that the runways aren’t operational so no more aircraft. Horsham township actually wants to sell the land with the runways to a developer and build a road from horsham road near the FAA tower to 611

If I'm not mistaken there is or was a chemical plant near Neshaminy creek in the Croydon area, could be a serious factor in the PFOS. Also I have never seen so much litter in a state park other than Tyler State park. Many people don't give a crap about the environment they share with the rest of us, I'm from NJ and our water ways are not any better. More people need to go fishing/hunting to understand that taking care of our ecosystems is a communal effort and if we all pitch in then we all benefit from heathy, ethically sourced food.

We have a similar tributary that was heavily polluted by Wolverine World Wide Shoe company here in Michigan, They dumped their leather that was treated with protectant all around the Rouge River. It is so bad that we even have signs posted warning us of touching the foam that forms near the dams and eddies due to how much PFOS has been detected within it. It has been found to be a huge risk factor for developing cancer especially thyroid cancer. Our handling of the issue has been fairly aggressive and luckily its still pretty safe to wade parts and fish to catch and release, but it is still really disappointing because the river remains one of the most picturesque fisheries in my area.

Been eating out of creeks my entire 45 years. Creek side catch clean and cooks often. Never had any problems but then again, I fish mostly Ozark mountain and Ouachita mountain streams here in Arkansas. I assume you get the same type of contaminants at your local McDonald’s, Hardee’s , sonic, taco-bell, BASICALLY ANY RESTAURANT. I’ll take my chances with the wild over the man made garbage. However, there are a few places I wouldn’t eat fish from but not many.

However, nobody knows if this Perfluorooctane Sulfonate actually harms anyone. They think there MIGHT BE a link to "adverse health effects" after they did tests with lab animals, and they have no idea whether or not it can cause cancer. And they also have no idea what amount is harmful in a person. So the reality is that there really is no proof to back up this Do Not Eat advisory. They're just taking a "better safe than sorry" approach. Eat at your own risk.

    • @General_Junkie
      @General_Junkie 2 роки тому

I mean if you eat A fish out of a river or Creek from the northeast using your head and educated judgement, will it really be bad for you and have a detrimental effect on your health? Probably not. It's not something I'd do regularly but one fish once in a blue moon has as much chance of having a horrible effect on your health as one has of winning the Powerball and you may even have a much greater chance of winning the Powerball. With all the preservatives, food coloring, even petroleum products in our food and drinks as well as all the GMO foods that are almost unavoidable at this point I don't think that is something that one has to lose hair over. Everything we do these days seems to have a negative effect on our health. Breathing, eating, drinking and shoot even sleeping in some cases can affect your health. And let's not even talk about the elephant in the room I haven't even mentioned that is supposed to be so good for preventing your future health problems but well we all know how that has turned out or at least you should and if you don't then there is no point in explaining it now. So I don't think you're gonna get sick now, in the future or die from eating a fish once in a blue moon from a body of water in the Northeast that one uses good judgement deciding which water they take one from.

When I lived in New Hampshire, I fished a lot of places that looked like that and you couldn't eat fish from any of them due to heavy metal contamination. The areas from Manchester, NH to Boston are full of contamination from the textile industry that used to be along the rivers. Those factories are all being converted to loft apartments/condos now. Very expensive, and probably totally unhealthy to live in.. 🤢🤢

I am an environmental health worker and I won't eat any of the fish here (East Texas) because I am aware of how much dumping is going on. The waterways are polluted with mercury (from coal plants), PCB, and selenium. But one of the biggest pollutants is raw wastewater. The creek that runs through my city has been deemed "too contaminated for wading or swimming" and does smell like a sewer.

Grew up along the Neshaminy Creek near Hulmeville, more than 60 years ago. Though my home waters at the time, it has always been always been an abused stream. Back in the day failing septic systems were the main culprit. Have to disagree about the presence of dams. They create large 'dead zones behind them, silting all productive water. If the dams were removed, there would be a potential striper run. My brother caught small stripers at the base of the dam in Hulmeville. Without the dams, you'd see a potential seasonal run. Used to be a good white perch run in April on that stream. Don't know if that still exists.

    • @rogerpatton2242

@@rogerpatton2242 Hulmeville portion of the Neshaminy is not going to be a trout river any time soon (other than the seasonal stockings) but yeah, in general dam pools warm and silt, creating dead zones behind them, and in trout capable streams, dam removal greatly increases habitat and lowers temperatures. The river becomes more well oxygenated.

I'm a hardcore clean water conservationist. Here where I am in Canada, we have one beautiful lake polluted with pfoa, pfas. It's the only lake polluted with these in the area and also such a beautiful one. What happened was, few decades ago the city airport had a firefighter training facility which was using toxic fire retardant foam and years of using that chemical leeched into underground waters which flow into the lake.
    Humans are destructive creatures

Theres a creek that runs through my city in the bay area California and we used to have quicksilver mines in the hills near by and the waste found its way into our waters most reservoirs and creeks here are contaminated with mercury. Also a large careless homeless population lives on several lengths of the creek. Just a shame. Steelhead used to run through that creek.

I often wonder about what chemicals are festering in our waters that may look very inviting and crystal clear. We have to find another way to run our industries and economy without polluting our environment. It's time to Level Up!

Green’s Bayou and the upper Ship Channel in Houston have consumption advisory signs( don’t eat fish, shellfish, etc). Saw some guys with fish on stringers, mentioned the signs, they just said “I eat these all the time, I feel fine!”… smh….

      @imnotirish3221 2 роки тому

People tell me that, too. They don't understand that just because you don't immediately die after eating a fish doesn't mean it's safe. As Leo said, contaminants can build up in your system (bioaccumulation) and you'll get sick later.

That's actually a big misconception regarding this topic, Brian! The problem is that with a lot of these chemicals, the effects are not "acute." In other words, people don't get sick immediately after eating the fish. The symptoms are almost always chronic...and once you get them, it is usually too late. Truly a shame! Hence why prevention is necessary for this stuff.

@@extremephillyfishing Another misconception I encounter in my job is that once something is dumped in water, thrown on the ground, or released into the air it's gone. Not true. Just because you don't see the contaminant after it went into the air/water/soil doesn't mean it's not there. It went somewhere; it didn't vanish into a black hole.
Also, banning things doesn't make them disappear.
For example, my area's soil is contaminated with lead and arsenic. The lead is from the days of leaded gasoline, and the arsenic is from when it was used as a pesticide on cotton plants. That lead was released into the air via combustion, but it fell back onto the ground and lead doesn't decay. Arsenic can't be bought by the public any more, but it's still here because it doesn't decay, either.
How does this affect fishing? All those contaminants still out there work their way into fish, crops, etc.

My local river here in west PA has had a do not eat advisory for years now because of high PCB levels. They haven’t stocked it with trout since probably 2015 because of it

Hello Leo. My son and I fish that very spot as well. My son knows your nephew and we even ran into you at the wawa. Thanks for the info. Odd thing is about 5 years back a guy came into my work(near your sisters house) with the yearly fire marshal inspection and was some sort of relation to the EPA or fish and game. I dont recall exactly what he said. He was looking hard around the shop for any violations. He was happy not to find any but he still seemed disturbed so I asked what was wrong. He mentioned somebody has been dumping chemicals into the creek and he is back tracing upstream in hopes to find em. He didnt mention what it was and didnt elaborate but now it all makes sense. Hope to see ya out there this spring.

That is correct, Dmatt. From 2021 onwards, the Neshaminy Creek is no longer getting stocked with Trout by the PA Fish and Boat Commission.

I fished this whole park since I was really young. Just buy the power bait worms that you have to rip apart. You can catch anything from a sunfish to the large mouth in there. And I honestly use the same worm to catch fish after fish even if it gets cut up or ripped a little they still work.

I never eat fish from rivers or creeks around here. When I eat fish it's from the store and hopefully Government inspected. Sometimes we use to play on the sand barge. When I got home, my family would throw me in a tub out back and forget about me. These were the good ole days.

Not to prod but did you do any trout fishing this fall? Just wondering since I think you mentioned at some point that you were going to. Either way thanks for the informational video, your recent videos on selective harvest have really helped me think differently about what fish I should be taking and what fish I shouldn't be taking. Great information any fisherman should know

Sadly, not a lot, Nathan. That was partly because I ended up spending a good amount of time down in Brazil. However, I did fish once or twice in December, and the holdover action was still OKAY.

It is big corporations not being held accountable causing this. Yet citizens get punished but big corporations get a slap on the wrist at most.
