  • This video gives an overview of the 7-day trip that Nick and I did from Sydney to Broken Hill (outback NSW) in August 2020. It is designed for other adventure riders who are planning similar trips or want some insight into what a trip like this is like. We were on BMW R1250GS bikes.

      Hey Mike
      If you love road riding then you will LOVE Adventure motorcycling. All the fun of riding bikes, but often with no cars, the adventure of riding on dirt, and often getting to places that very few people ever see. I'm getting ready to set off on a 7 day trip to the Victorian High country. It will be 90% on dirt and we'll mix up camping with hotels etc. It is going to be amazing. My advice is to pull the trigger and try an adv bike.... it will just open up a whole new dimension for you.

    This is one of the best motorcycle videos I have ever seen! I have visited Australia twice and love it and the people. I am an old BMW touring rider from Indiana who rode on pavement all over the US. I put about 100 k miles on my R90/6 the last 30 years and still ride it. Thanks for sharing and do it again soon.

    • @brentbat

      Hey John, thanks for your note. Glad you are still riding your R90. I also have a GS in the US (Texas) and did an 11 day trip through Tenessee and the Smokey Mountains. You have lots of beautiful country to ride in over there. Stay safe. I'm planning another trip through the Australian high country in March, so I look forward to trying to do it justice with my cameras.

    I love how you have a planned ride, then if you see something you just ride up that track. I really don't like adventure riding with no adventure and it just becomes about pounding the miles. Everyone should always take the side streets in life...thats what makes the adventure.😀

      Hey Horatio, thanks for your comment. Yes, I have to admit, I've been put off Long Way Up by all the support etc..... 2 Rivians, Amorak, Sprinter Van, Truck with Diesel generator..... In my mind it's not really an adventure anymore. For me part of the fun is literally heading off on an adventure with only your wits and what you carry on your bike... (in my case the wits don't count for a lot :-)

    From Arizona, US...Glad to see you guys riding your big bikes as designed. Many here are whining about them opting for the smaller 790’s, etc... If you want to go a distance, there’s nothing like your 1250’s, well built and comfortable when on hwy. Really love the miles of dirt Au offers. Enjoy!

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 роки тому

      Hey Greg, I agree. I dont plan to do single-track, but these bikes are pretty damn capable on technical 4wd tracks. And if you have them hardened up, then they don't get damaged when you drop them. I love your part of the world. I've spent quite a bit of time in Az, Utah, NV. The Southwest is my favorite part of the USA. Will have to the AZ BDR one of these days... I'm doing Idaho in July. If you want to see a contrast in landscape, check out my Vic High Country ride. We did 7 days almost totally on dirt.... Kind of like our version of a BDR.
      Take care.

      Hey Kep, The DJI Mavic Air 2 smashed one of it's arms when it hit the tree, I think the repair was about $100-ish.
      However, I'm selling the DJI and keeping the Skydio, because while the DJI is superior to the Skydio in a number of areas, it's the autonomous motion tracking that is the game changer for me. I've got a big 8 day trip up to the mountains with it soon, I can't wait to see what sort of footage I can get with the Skydio.

    • @brentbat
      @brentbat  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Tim, you are right, the Aus government has taken a pretty strong stance on COVID. Some states have locked other states out if there is an outbreak, and you can't even get into Australia without a FORCED 2 weeks quarantine under guard in a hotel.
      However, my state (NSW) has had zero new cases of COVID for 20 days straight now, and I think the country as a whole has been at zero new cases for about 7 days, so the tough approach has definitely worked, and Australia is gradually reducing it's strict approach to COVID, but I think it will keep quarantine in place from international visitors for quite some time yet. However, none of this stopped me from exploring the NSW outback in August luckily.

      Hey Samuel
      I hear you, I haven't done as much riding/traveling in the USA, but I've seen a fair bit of it. I think the biggest difference is the remoteness you get here. The landmass is about the same size, but US has 330M people, and Australia has around 25M (mostly around the coast). So there is just so much more "nothingness", and when you go remote in Australia... YOU REALLY GO REMOTE. No fuel, no help. You are on your own.

    Great video. I got to Silverton in February touring on a CBR250R which managed a bit of gentle off-roading. Unfortunately most of it was closed then but I did get to meet Teddy, the hotel dog determined not to let me leave. Back in England now but would love another trip to Oz.

    Great work Brent. 5 of my buddies and I rode from Sydney to Tasmania over 12 days and got back just before lockdown. Couldn't have been luckier with the timing. There was a 1200 GS, a 1600 RT, an R1200R, an R9T, an old Harley and my XSR700 (having just returned to motorcycling after a 38 year gap! Well my last bike was an H1 500 triple, so you can perhaps understand :) ). Needless to say, it got a bit hairy when we hit dirt, but we got through it. Most was on tarmac and we went hard in places, but the XSR had no problem keeping up. I've since upgraded to the Tracer 900GT but I think some road & off-roading is next for me - inspired by your video. BTW, I recorded the trip on a Hero 8 Black but we're now in December and I still haven't completed editing. I'm told Resolve is pretty easy to use but I'm proving that wrong. Your video makes it look like it shouldn't be so hard! Anyway, cheers and thanks for sharing. Steve.

      Hey Steven, thanks for your note. That ride to Tasmania sounds amazing. I will have to add that to my list. Sounds like you had an eclectic mix of bikes on the trip, and yes, I can imagine it would have gotten a bit hairy on the dirt on some of those road bikes. But that is all part of the adventure. Your new ride looks pretty slick. I've ridden a mix of on-road and off-road bikes, but now I love the adventure bike style. I'm planning my next trip for March... 7 days through the high country... Snowy Mountains and Victorian High country... almost all on dirt. Hardly any cars, no traffic. We'll be camping off the bikes and staying in hotels for the trip... This is the type of adventure I like doing now. Exploring.
      Regarding editing, I've used a few tools, Resolve, Final Cut, Premiere Pro. I currently edit using Premiere Pro. Unfortunately, no matter what tool you use there is a bit of a learning curve to getting the fundamentals and settings right. If you would like a crash course, I'd be happy to do an hour zoom call with you and show you how to get started with correct settings and go through the fundamentals.

    Btw... that’s the slippery mud we have here in Az and in much of our southwest -if it rains...When it rains, big bikes wait a day or two.🤪🤪

    Nice trip. I grew up out at Condobolin - where the Utes in the Paddock now are 17:36. That red mud we got out there could be like glue, and in the 50s/60s before the roads were surfaced it meant not going anywhere.

      Kim, this trip was the first time I have experienced the outback mud and clay. I can imagine the rain would have made life interesting before the roads got pave. Beautiful area around Condobolin. I spent a couple of years living in Wagga and really enjoyed experiencing the country.

      @@brentbat I also lived in Wagga for ten years in the 90s. Back in those days I did a trip out west with some mates to Broken Hill and a few other places out west. We rode from Willcannia to Ivanhoe on the return trip, 160 kms of bull dust, soft white gypsum dust like talc. We were all on big road bikes. The guy with the 150mm tyres had the biggest problems staying upright, and the older BMW R80 with skinny tyres had little problem. Trouble was, it made him too confident. He rode off too fast and we caught up with him covered in white and the bike parked on the side of the road. There was a big hole in the road where he sank into ten inch deep dust and came off. He had no experience of these conditions and when one of us told him to move his bike further from the road as he was parked on a thin crust he said "It's OK" just as his sidestand poked through the crust and his bike fell over and snapped off his left mirror. Poor bloke. :)
      And a few weeks ago I went to Broken Hill with a few other Indian riders and decided to come home through Condo. I got to Cobar and set up the phone GPS to follow from there. It took me on a road that included 100 kms of dirt road - with me on a 400 kg cruiser. That's what I get for following the short route. A week later I put a deposit on a Triumph Tiger 900 - should be here by Christmas.

      @@Kim_Miller , you will love the Tiger 900. I've heard nothing but good things about that bike. Something to look forward to for sure. Yeah, I love the adventure riding... Planning two big rides next year.... Victorian High country, and then Cape York. I love the planning, the riding and the film making... it's all great fun.
