Appreciate your comments, definitely seems like a big adventure when you are in a little boat. Still have to practice all of the big boat skills! Take care,

No need to offer 'apologies for the wind...' ... ; ). Thanks for the fun outing!

Thanks - I don’t hear wind noise until editing, still looking at ways to avoid it.

Full sail in 15-20knots?! Well done. Nice run home under jib alone. That lagoon could be good on a neap tide.

Very choppy indeed! Very jealous that you can get out so much. The weather here in Tas is still atrocious!

Sorry to hear your weather still hasn’t come good. You will have to do twice as much sailing this season to keep you going through the offseason.

Floating along on just a jib in that wind? You'll be there all day.

Ha, yes, I was taking it at a cruising pace. The heron scooted along just fine though and I was home in an hour. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for a nice low key video. Would you please tell me about your camera gear and filming technique, in particular how you keep the horizon still and more or less level despite the boat's motion. My filming efforts from on board have often been marred by excessive motion and jerkiness, especially when I zoom in. Cheers, A

This video was shot just on my iphone XR and edited in iMovie straight from the phone. I just hold it in one hand when I feel I can manage the boat with the other. Surprisingly, the human body is an effective gimbal in these situations
I have edited out all the fumbling and 'oh dear' moments that of course happen. I can film this way because my main sheet comes off the transom and I can hold tiller and main in one hand.
I do use an Akaso V50 action camera in other videos but the phone is the simplest and gives great quality in my opinion.
I hope you find more success in your filming.
      Regards,
      Josh

Thanks for responding Josh - I'll have to learn how to gimball my body! My major problem has been attempts to film other boats underway, especially zooming in on them.

Hi there! Glad to have found your channel! I am also building the kingfisher. Finished the hull and startimg the work on rigging. Is there a way i could connect to for some questions? Or, could you maybe upload a video describing the entire rigging arangement in detail? I was considering to go for a diy furling jib, what do you think? On my channel, i uploaded a few videos with the building

Hi, just to clarify this is heron class dinghy named Kingfisher. Sorry if you got the wrong impression, but I hope you have a successful build. Have you tried a Facebook page with your class of boat? I would be surprised if there isn’t a community of owners who could help you.

Centreboard physics has to do with the fore-aft location of "Center of Lateral Resistance" (CLR) (of the centerboard) as compared with the center of your sail-plan (Center-of effort) (CoE). When the force of wind on sail is fwd of your keel, this is called "Lee helm" and should be avoided. With sails further aft you'll have "Weather helm" - and you'll be fighting the boat to pull it off the wind. Boat designers locate the keel's CLR relative to the CoE of the sail plan, and so, you need to be mindful of this with partial sail. Ketches or Yawls are rather handy here, as they're designed to be balanced with Mainsail down. That's what makes them nice for cruising... Infact, Yawls were specifically design as fishing boats, with precisely this feature. As it allows them to clear-main-deck, while keeping a balanced sail plan.

Sometimes, depending on wave mix height and direction, you can be better off with more sail than less.

Thanks Mark. Would be interested to try that but I don’t have enough experience to take ‘risks’ yet. More practice required!
