Sailing a 17ft boat from Lake Macquarie to Pittwater Sydney and return with some challenging conditions.Using a sea anchor and my self steering system.

Bruce you are indeed a master of your craft! I couldn't imagine (letting go of the tiller) changing sail configurations in those waters. Bravo on a great sail.
I have a Tiller break on my dinghy, it means that you can let go if you need to sort something out, very handy, it’s changed the way I sail, much more relaxed, look it up on YT, it’s also known as a tiller tamer?
@@davidupton4730 Thanks for the info,they are good but I do have one in the form of a 8mm shock cord across the boat under the tiller which I lift and jam into an aluminium jam cleat I made which is fixed to the bottom of the tiller handle. Cheers Bruce

He has designed and built some amazing multis - Manta, Manta 2, Wired and X-it. A great guy to have a chat with next time you see the boat, a real out of the box thinker. Cheers Phil

Bruce, another great video! Glad to see how flat the DS sails in the big water. Do you have one or two reef points in that sail? Also, do you lose a noticeable amount of stability when you go out without all the gear loaded? Thanks!
Thanks Russ, I have one reef which is 1.5 mtrs up the luff but I could probably use a deeper one at times.There may be a small difference in stability when unloaded but you gain on buoyancy which makes for a drier ride .
I've got a Daysailer 2 and I enjoyed this video so much I've seen it 3 times. I'm going to practice reefing and raising and lowering both the main and jib while underway. How does it affect your Daysailer's helm when you sail under reefed main alone? Does it get a lot of weather helm. Can you sail to weather under reefed main alone? And how about sailing under jib alone? Only downwind? Thanks for your videos. Your boat handling and cool-headedness is impressive.
Hi Dan I am happy you are getting something out of my movies. I find the Daysailer performs very well under reefed main alone.When sailing to weather if you get too much weather helm you can rake the centreboard aft which should balance out the helm.There is some footage of sailing like this here ua-cam.com/video/Nppr2epU7l0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared Under jib alone reaching is about as high into the wind I have been able to get so don’t use this method very often.A second deep reef in your mainsail is worth having I think for 20kts and over.My main reef is 5ft up the luff. Awesome trip mate, playing out in the big ocean with the sharks, you got big cajones😅 I can see how you set the sea anchor but how do you retrieve it? It looks like the line terminals at the bow once set?
Thanks for your remarks and question. I go forward and quickly pull the sea anchor in while walking it to the stern where I bring it back aboard and reattach the line to the cleat. I could attach a trip line to the stern but I don’t want the extra line for fear of it getting tangled.
Hi Bruce what a great trip. Two questions. Does the OD daysailer have a metal centreboard or any other ballast. Secondly your man-over-board rope is a good idea for us solo sailors, does it attach to the bow in order to bring the boat to wind if you fall over and grab onto it. I need something like that myself.
Hi Jason,no ballast my centreboard is timber epoxy glassed with 7kg lead in the tip to make it drop.It weighs 17kg all up.My man overboard rope ties to the stern. The only issue I can see attaching it to the bow is the chance it may hook onto something debris in the water etc.It also may end up possibly fouling the centreboard or rudder or outboard prop.

Hi Stan, I placed my reefing point to bring the top of the main down to the height of the top of jib. It is probably around the height you would call a second reef.There are times when I could use an even deeper reef and would probably put one in the next mainsail i have made. I don’t know if I would use a lower reef point much . I hope this answers your question. Cheers Bruce
Really enjoyed this. I know nothing about sailing. How much would a boat like this cost approx? How long would it take me to get the skills to do a trip like this? If anyone can offer friendly help, I'd really appreciate it.
Hi and thank you for the comments.A boat set up like this in Australia could cost somewhere between 3-5 thousand dollars but it could be more depending on the type and age of the boat.To take on a coastal trip alone you do need a very competent skill level which does require some time in years to achieve. If you come from a background of involvement in and around the water and are a handy active person you will obviously be ready quicker. I would start by joining a dinghy sailing club and crew for someone to learn the basics. From there buy your own boat and join in some sailing trips like the ones we do here in Raid Sydney.There is a lot you can do before venturing out into offshore waters that will keep the interest going. I hope this helps.
You will have also noticed Bruce watching the sky a lot and predicting weather changes. This is something else you'll need to develop an understanding of as well as the physical sailing and boat handling skills. Good luck!

What tackle and bait were you using when you caught the fish? What watercraft do you use when going ashore?
I was using a hard body lure with a hand line. I don’t need another craft to go ashore as my boat will float in 200 mm of water or 8”.
