  • A lettuce hem is the perfect, frilly, girly touch to add to clothes that use a stretch fabric. Not only is it pretty, but it is EXTREMELY simple to make. This tutorial is VERY beginner friendly as I share the 5 simple tips for creating a lettuce hem. It is my favourite way to hem knit fabrics and looked so cute on Alice's 1st birthday dress.
    Let's get making!

    ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
    Welcome to My Mum Makes! I’ve started this channel as a creative outlet to share my sewing projects online. I’ve loved to sew since my Mum taught me as a little girl and I find it relaxing, productive and fun. I love the chance to make things for my kids, myself and our home and I want you to feel motivated to give sewing a try and get creative. I think creativity is good for us especially as Mums. We can get so stuck in our everyday repetition, but spending some me-time creating something is a great way to unwind, prioritise our needs and use our brains in a different way to the everyday. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @mymummakes.marie to see more of what I’m up to.

    Oh I’m so glad I found you! An Aussie mum breaking it down so it’s simple & easy to follow. I’m planning on making some rompers for my little girl and really want to jazz up the sleeves with a lettuce hem. Thanks so much for this video, have definitely subscribed 👍🏻

      Oh I'm so glad to get this comment! How nice! I'm glad it was a helpful video for you.
      A lettuce hem would look very cute on a girly romper 😍 you might need to put a row of elastic around the leg and arm holes a few cm in from the lettuce hem so it isn't too open and will be tighter if that makes sense

    It really feels like making love to the fabric. I hope I can get my waves more consistent now after watching your video. I did try on a serger first but going to try my machine

    I have lots of scraps of cotton Lycra I’m going to practice on. It looks very very cute.
    Thank you

      It takes a bit to get used to how to pull the tension on the fabric and still feed it under the foot, but it's not too difficult. Certainly a good idea to have some practices first.

      Shortening retail pajama bottoms which were initially hemmed with the lettuce hem.

      Sounds great! I'm sure if there was already a lettuce hem then the fabric will be a good one to use for it. Hope it works out for you

    Probs a silly question but i am a nooby... lol
    What presser foot is best to use for this? Im a beginner and realy trying to do this lettuce hem however my stitches are half on/ half off the fabric lol.. what am i doing wrong :(

    • @MyMumMakes
      @MyMumMakes  2 роки тому +1

      No question is silly! I use my standard presser foot, nothing special. You could try moving your fabric over a bit so more of the stitch is going onto the fabric. It can be a bit fiddly at first to get used to how to stretch and feed the fabric in

    How can I do this on a bullet knit fabric? I’m pulling it but it won’t roll haha.

    • @MyMumMakes
      @MyMumMakes  3 роки тому +2

      That's ok if it doesn't roll. You can just fold the edge up once as if you were hemming it normally and run your zig zag along the fold. Have a go and get me know if it isn't working still and we'll try to work it out together

      @@MyMumMakes Will do! Thank you so much! I tried doing it with my serger, but that didn’t go very well either haha. The sewing machine was easier. I’ll give that a go, thank you!

      Thank you for this tutorial, I was always wondering why mine never looked as nice as in the picture. Sewing from the back so I could zigzag over the rolled hem makes all the difference 👍👌
