slow today but 15 years ago it was not even possible. This is a great machine for retro gaming, the games that it was built for were fun to play and still are.
It really needs 8 gigs of RAM. I have an old Q9650 in a 3rd rig (can't let it go) that I use for mostly non-gaming now, but the last real game I ran with it was Far Cry 3, on a GX 670. It could do 45 fps at best and dipped into the high teens when the CPU got swamped. I have some older games like Diablo 2 on it though.
@@Gamevet i am running a q9550 with a 1050ti 4g ddr5, the system mobo only supports 2 gig of ddr2 800, I play tombraider underworld and games like that with no issues. That being said it is easy for me to bog the machine down with google chrome and a few other things running..
@@Gamevet My plan is to upgrade next year, I have been selling retro machines and games and saving all that income for next year. The market for dos, win95, win98 and some winxp machines is good right now.. I did not realize how much stuff I had in my basement. lol..
I think the reason Doom didn't run is because it requires an instruction set that the cpu doesn't support. It's something to watch out for when buying old cpus, even high performance ones.
@@christopherkidwell9817 given a choice between 4 k or 60 fps i would chose the 4 k option in video games. i play pc games and even i cant say i see a deference betwean 30 fps and 60 fps
@@supersaiyaman11589 you don’t play enough especially competitive. 30-60 is a huge difference. You can see its stuttering and lagging. Even 60fps you can see how how slow the game moves.
I think you can have UA-cam auto generate subtitles on all video's now. It's not always accurate since it uses speech recognition software, but it's still awesome. I have a hard time hearing voices, and prefer CC to be on.
@@LePedant Not from my experience making videos for clients. It will start as soon as the video is uploaded, but the subs will still take time to complete and be available to view. The new captioning feature on Premiere Pro is a lot faster. But then again, my clients' videos are Unlisted and for internal use only. So they probably get the least priority with the subtitling servers, compared to Public (and monetized videos). 🤷♀️
Still rocking an AMD FX-8350 @ 4.5GHz, 16G memory, a GTX 1070, and SSD boot drive. Still plays every game I want to play (The Crew, Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport, etc) at 1080p, 60fps, ultra settings no problem. Would be cool to see Jay to a video on the 8350.
I was still running an FX-8320 @ 4.3 GHz with 32 GB's of ram and an RX570, and it was still burning 60-100 FPS in most games I played. Gave it a small upgrade to a 6500XT GPU last year just to give it some new life to an old stalwart, until i built my new rig as a late Christmas present to myself. Now my son is excited to get the old one just because he knows it's loaded with about 3 TB's of games ready to play. I'm really interested to see what the ancient Phenom II will do if i bring it back from the dead, since somehow the kids made it crap out about two years ago.
My Pentium 4 is at least 17 y/o, my mom bought it second hand, its my first pc and still works just fine, unfortunately is one of the first pentium 4, the mobo only has PCI and IDE ports, so I'm stuck with my lovely MX4000 on that and no ssd.
I’m watching on an AM2 Athlon 64 (an X2 5600+). At 1080p. It works but I need the help of h264ify. Threw a SSD and a wifi card, and it runs as well as a $300 el cheapo laptop.
why? You can get a MUCH faster PC for pretty cheap... a 3rd to 5th gen i5 PC should be available for around 50 bucks, maybe get a GT 750 or something like that for the same money and you can play at least some games. I was able to play Cyberpunk on my server (2x Xeon X5690 128GB RAM) with a Quadro K4000. Just don't crank resolution up to the max and you should be fine. 1366x768 is what I use. My PC got a i5 8500 (around 50€) and a GTX 970 (I paid 150 for it, but that was a few years ago) and I can play more or less any game I want on ultra. Yes, even Cyberpunk 2077. You don't need to spend 1000€+ on a PC to be able to game on it. If you go AMD/ATI you could probably whack a decent PC together for around 300€.
Still sitting on my old hardware. Upgraded a few weeks ago. i7 920 with a 770fe and 9600k with a 960. Cant find anyone who wants to buy. One day I'll meet a struggling gamer and just make their day.
I had a i7-6700k with 32 gig ram and running a GTX970, Upgraded to a 5900x with some new ram and still running the 970 and honestly it feels worse now. I get more screen tearing now than before.
U can buy a laptop with a repectable set up used for extremely cheap right now. Im getting spoiled with "mobile" gaming. Fps drop without the power cord sucks but still ok
I would love to see a video on playing old games with new hardware. DosBox, GOG, VirtualBox running Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.1... Might want to see about getting someone like LGR to colab with you on it.
I'm pairing an R9 5900x with a GTX 770. The 770 has been running every day for the past 9 years. It'll have to do another year as it seems, untill the prices drop.
I am also still on a 770. Had to repair it two times already. The first time after 6 years because Palit was using some pretty bad thermal paste and the the second time back in November of last year, when it showed artefacts all over the place. I was able to bring it back with a heatgun. Since then I am waiting for a 3080 to be available at msrp and praying that my card doesn't die a third time. Don't get me wrong, the card is hopelessly outdated but it's still way better than the GT 510 I was using while researching how I could repair the card.
Ive been using an rx 560 4gb vram, with 8gb ram, with a ryzen 3 2300x cpu, so super low end, and now since prices dropped, got the radeon 6600 and a ryzen 5 5600x
Hmm I know you've talked a lot about hiding messy cables but I wish you did a video where you actually bought the clips, catches, sleeves, etc and showed each solution in action on a desk
Yeah, when Jay covered them initially their prices weren't too outrageous (other than silly stuff like needing to get a 3700X to actually get something better than an A520 mobo). Of course the AIBs are jacking up their asking price so maybe that is what they are having to pay the distributor to get any.
That's because they probably pay more for those cards now as well. They charge $300 for 1650, while that card wasn't nearly as expensive back in the day. Also it's not like you can buy 3070 for this low. I think we should stop expecting assemblers to charge the mythical Nvidia MSRP for those cards. Also, there are bigger issues with Redux like forcing unnecessary premium items like Wifi card, 600W PSU for 1650 builds, AIOs and expensive cases, as well as Windows for basically retail price. They basically leverage their access to GPUs as much as they can without offering any noteworthy choice.

On RTFM you made note on how you'd practice speaking in the car in an exaggerated radio voice, so that when you did sit down in front of the camera, your tonality was between that amped up DJ voice, and low key narration. to you im sure it was obvious, but that practice had never really crossed my mind, and it's definitely helped my public speaking in the couple weeks I've been using it. Could you do a video that focuses around your mindset and the preparation you take when you sit in front of a camera and do a talking head? I understand that in the world of content creation, as a presenter, you either have it, or you don't, and you probably think a video like that would be mundane, but for those of us who are developing a content creation style, I feel like it would be massively beneficial to understand your creative processes having seen the finished product for so many years. Talk about how when you added Nick and Phil help you, how your workflow changed, what you wish you would've done differently. I understand that there in an element to peeling back the curtain, and you'd be hesitant to divulge your trade secrets, but it would be very interesting to know what a normal day is like from unlocking the studio door, to when everybody goes home. Thanks for the many hours of great content gents!
Jay, you’re looking at current auction prices on eBay. If you filter by “buy now” you will see that sellers are actually asking over 100 dollars for a GTX 950.
I was laughing my butt off at that in his last video, and he did it again! Prob good that he doesnt use ebay though and get ripped off by greedy sellers on there
Which is why you never buy with the buy it now option, wait a week or two by bidding until you land a good deal, bought 3 GPUs from eBay auctions ranging from £40 below BIN to £100 below BIN, and these are all 6-7 year old GPUs (Maxwell/Hawaii era)
Still want to see the really old school gaming hardware, from when the first 3D cards came out. VooDoo series, Riva TNT cards.. back when you had to actually set up your IRQ and DMA manually! :D

seeing these "retro" type videos, really makes me wanna do the challenge i have for myself: Build 2 PCs and compare them to each other. the 1st being the performance "equivalent" of my first ever PC, (which with all the different chip skus out there really makes it tough) and 2 that matches the COST of that 1st PC ($2,032.87) to "show" how far the range in price to performance has evolved.

There's actually a mod to play doom eternal on core 2 quads as long as they are 8000/9000 series as they support sse 4.1 instruction set, and because of this game great optimalization it is over 30fps and it reaches 60fps sometimes, core 2 quads 6000 series sadly cannot run it because it lacks of sse 4.1 instruction set compatibility. That is also a reason why you cannot run it on amd athlon/phenom processors on am2/am3, but there are programs like intel sde that you can use to emulate lacking instructions to run it whenever your supports it or not, but performance hit is big enough that it isn't really useful.
I live in California too and the heat is coming, supposed to be 106 on memorial day. what i would like to see you guys mess around with is a liquid cooling system where the radiator and fans are actually outside of the house, that way all the heat is brought directly outside. That’s a decent setup. A few years ago in college I was gaming on a Phenom II, GTX 950 rig. ✌️
Umm can that even run a game 🤣
@@RawWrath it runs Minecraft and Among Us just fine, way better than the old 1st gen core i3 laptop she was using

Can a Pentium 4 even handle UA-cam over 480p? My core2duo from the early 00's was pinned at 100% watching UA-cam.
One day I'll meet a struggling gamer and just make their day.
also, I'd love to see games running on modern integrated graphics systems
Now this is an interesting idea
U should try newer parts with a old gpu to see how bad the bottle neck really is and if it is usable until future gpu prices
This would be a great idea. If people could see how a 950 pairs with something like a 10700k as they wait for a available 30 series.
Honestly I love this idea
I built a PC with an i5-10400, 16GB 3000MHz, and a used GTX 950 xD
How are you verified?

Take it a couple steps farther and find / cobble together an old pc that runs those games how they were intended to be played.
lol virtualbox. the kid version of a virtual machine software. vmware player or HYPER-V or even qemu is king.
I'm pairing an R9 5900x with a GTX 770. The 770 has been running every day for the past 9 years. It'll have to do another year as it seems, untill the prices drop.
damn bro.... you really have a unbalanced machine haha
I was still rocking a GTX960 with 4GB VRAM and 8GB RAM up until a couple months ago. Although I couldn’t play all games on high, it wasn’t horrible.
Ive been using an rx 560 4gb vram, with 8gb ram, with a ryzen 3 2300x cpu, so super low end, and now since prices dropped, got the radeon 6600 and a ryzen 5 5600x
I had to use a q6600 when my mobo died, it got me into overclocking and I was really impressed with it’s performance in this day and age
Hmm I know you've talked a lot about hiding messy cables but I wish you did a video where you actually bought the clips, catches, sleeves, etc and showed each solution in action on a desk
The crazy part is that even if the CPU was 1-2 generations newer it would make this totally usable.
redux charges almost 1k usd for a 3070, watch out with their "no upsell" thing :D
Yeah, when Jay covered them initially their prices weren't too outrageous (other than silly stuff like needing to get a 3700X to actually get something better than an A520 mobo). Of course the AIBs are jacking up their asking price so maybe that is what they are having to pay the distributor to get any.
Redux actually used to have really fantastic prices for someone who wanted reliable parts for just an additional build fee.
My lord, is that... legal?
Looks like they charge 855 for a 3070. Wonder which one they will install for you? Would be nice to know which one it is
Has anyone mentioned trying to get some physical arcade machines? Build one? Tournament? Phil would need a milk crate to stand on.

I was laughing my butt off at that in his last video, and he did it again! Prob good that he doesnt use ebay though and get ripped off by greedy sellers on there
Definitely, some out there for $150-$200 if you buy from a seller that accepts returns.
Which is why you never buy with the buy it now option, wait a week or two by bidding until you land a good deal, bought 3 GPUs from eBay auctions ranging from £40 below BIN to £100 below BIN, and these are all 6-7 year old GPUs (Maxwell/Hawaii era)
I saw a gtx 980 on a local used-goods site advertised for 599 euro.
A 1080 for 800 euro and a 2070 for 990 euro. Blew my mind.

My thoughts are that this would reduce the load on the AC system. Obviously this would require a lot of liquid and pipes and i have no experience with custom cooling
Built a Q8400 + HD6670 as an HTPC, played Castlevania 1, killer is dead, batman arkham asylum, darksiders on 4GB DDR2 TeamElite RAM. Of course @720p. Binging these old hardware series you have going on!
I upgraded from my Phenom X4 last year. Was a good 9 years.
finally, a review of my exact current main gaming desktop in 2021! awesome! "its an old piece of shit" oh dear..
Playing on 120 fps "im on a frame jittery mess!"
Kidding me?
Couple of ideas for topics for your consideration;
1. How to set up for twitch streaming pc or consoles. (Can be searched but could be interesting)
2. VR gaming, what is needed hardware/space wise, is it worth it? (Again, could be searched, but potentially hilarious if you do a vid)
Man I feel your pain... between the 'tinker' terms and 'not for cheap' on the ddr2 memory.
Got a 2009 build sitting in the closet, wanna revive it enough for Minecraft for my kids... but it only has 2x2gb ram. Same exact ram is still going for $90 new...
Build your dream PC from when you were a teenager!
I'd like to see more case mod videos if you're taking suggestions. Lol
In 2021 a gtx 1050 ti costs more than $250 lol 😂😅
Yep i bought my 4 years ago for 150 lol still waiting dor 30 series stock.
@@cmdrhersin592 we got it here in india haha
still better off finding a 280X .it 25% ~ faster and it from 2013
@@hkuowwpw9557 Same here in the Philippines but damn they're just expensive.
And the Rx 580 8GB is around $500-$600
Still rocking with my ten-year-old i7-3770 system (circa 2012). Upgraded mid way to an NVIDIA GTX 970, granting a new second wind to reasonably deal with more recent games.
Was using my 2008 build upto 2019. Asus maximus II formula 8gb ddr2 q9550 oc to 3.8ghz. In a sweet antec 900 case. Started life with a geforce 9800oc finally a gtx970. Played everything well upto doom eternal. Amazing.
That feeling when your system is only a few years younger than this one..
“Don’t recommend you go out and buy this setup” Any real gamer has one or two of these boxes collecting dust in the closet or corner and don’t need to buy any of it. I’ve still got my first 80/486 DX2 66 in the closet for nostalgic reasons. Heck i’ve even got a ViC=20 and C=64 and 128 too!
Jay: It can run some titles!
Me: didnt it crash after everything?
I still use my "first build" from 2014. Did some upgrades through the years. Different case, All SSD now, new speakers and upgraded to a 1080. Now i got rid of the case and build the motherboard into an alex desk cabinet and build the power button and usb into the desktop. I dont feel the need for bigger upgrades but I do enjoy the videos of the high end build! :-)
I'm using a GTX 950M paired with an i5-6300HQ in my laptop to this day since like 2016 or so. It's old and weak as hell by today's standards, but holds up like a damn miracle and it's capable of more than I ever thought it would be, amazing stuff.
My 20 plus year old laptop laughs at how this pc crashes yet I've never had a game crash on me
Your laptop from before the year 2000? What exactly are you running? Oregon Trail? Lmaooo
"Starting to feel less bad for people with old computers."
I'd like to see him daily drive that for like a month, save for his streams, and see what his opinion is then. Some people want their computers to be able to do more, and not just graphically.
I got a core i5 4570, 12 gb of ram, 500 gb hard drive and a free monitor for less than 200$, but I still can't afford a GPU lmao
Get like an hd7770 for now
I just checked ebay, and i saw a few 750 tis for like $60 which isnt too bad
I have the i5 4690 and a gt 1030
I just upgraded from a i5 4570, but it had only 8 gigs of ram. I'm now on amd.
Why 12
good value there. even if you get to buy a 200$ card at MSRP in 1 year you still have a workable system at a good price.
in the meantime you can still use your gpuless computer.
good move.
Engaging with the content that I appreciate. Thanks for what you do.
I had a very similar setup to this one: first gen i7, 6gb ram, and a gtx 950. I finally upgraded last week, to a i3 10100f and 16gb of ram, but i kept the 950 for obvious reasons
LOL I had to laugh at what you term "old hardware". I still do lots of gaming on a 30 year old Commodore Amiga! Now that's real retro gaming! :D
Page faults in RAM can usually be cleared up by cleaning the contacts of the RAM with a pencil eraser. Usually works like a charm, unless the sticks are actually bad.
Recently installed SSD + Radeon RX 580 on similar spec CPU, used Steam on Linux Mint, and worked fine! Toned down gfx, machine was perfectly useable (for a kid) for games prior to 2012. And it still looks good. SSD made huge difference.
My old Feb 2009 built PC is using the 4th motherboard and survive with Intel Core 2 duo E8500(Gaming Beast), DDR 3-8gb Dual channel 1066mhz, Intel G41 Express Chipset from afox motherboard, 2TB harddisk 7200rpm, Window 7 -64bit. Enjoy watching youtube 1080p, Charging mobile phone & powerbank using the USB 2, Play online Dota 2, Call of duty, light gaming old pc games, etc.
It was called continuous power because there was a horrible habit of power supplies listing peak power as their wattage, but not that their peak could be maintained for just seconds. Caused a ton of failures.
I have a laptop with a 1650. 1080p 60hz. All I need and love it.
The thing with old hardware is you can play no shortage of old games on them. Plenty of great classics out there that deserve to be experienced. Some might even run better on period relevant hardware than current systems :D
My son's currently gaming on an fx6300 which is 1 year older then he is. It does actually really well with an aftermarket cooler running it to a 4.3ghz OC. Considering I got it for free (except the 1050ti and 240ssd ) it's an insanely good gaming pc for the price
DDR2 is still available here in the UK. Costs anything between £2.40 to £5, but probably not worth getting as the postage will be expensive.
Nice to see you review old stuff. Im still going on a 13yr old i7 920 system @ 3.5Ghz, 12GB RAM , GTX1060 6GB. I keep wanting to upgrade to a new rig but this old thing just plays everything I throw at it and with high settings. FC5, AC Odyssey, GR Wildlands, Fallout 4, even MSFS (with some sliders on Ultra) it just keeps going. I still wanna upgrade cos I want blistering performance but this thing will go another 20 years if I let it.
i have an fx 4300 and a hd 7770 for a htpc in my livingroom. It surprisingly runs games like fallout 4, and mortal kombat x fairly well. Its surprising what some of this old hardware can actually do
This is 8 years ago... I remember the hype about the GTX 460s a long time ago, can't remember the year, the most powerful GPUs at the time were the GTX 290s and 480s...
I was coming back to PC gaming after my old Pentium Dual Core + Nvidia 7300GL burned up a couple years before...
Now here we are! Graphics have gone crazy at 4K resolutions, up to 360FPS, Freesync, Gsync, Ultrawides, consoles that actually can run 4K...
Just wow...
Currently in the dark side... playing on an Xbox.
I'd love to see some random watercooling stuff, like "dumbest idea ever" with the 480x480 rad. loved that one
I’m doing a sleeper build in a case very similar to the one you have in this video. I would really enjoy seeing what you would do to that case to make it more compatible with new tech. It’s been quite the challenge for me, especially in terms of cooling.
This is a fantastic video! I still have my old PC running AMD Phenom II X6 with 16gb of DDR3, and it is still a perfectly capable home computer that can handle older games just fine plus any regular computing tasks.
