I'm dying and would love to have a challenger R/T with a 440 six pack and a torkflight transmission (automatic) with 392 gears. 1970 or 1971. I never had the money to buy one, especially now but I'll always wish I had!
That doesn`t matter the matter is he drove a WHITE DODGE CHALLENGER 1970 with a 4 on the floor and with a 440 magnum that should be a 426 hemi😛...............and he just delivered that to us who only could dream of that feeling😍with supersoul in the speakers (the Arizona sheriff or if it was the Utah Sheriff I don´t no, called him another thing but that isn´t allowed to say today)!
Really reminds me of this one reproduction this guy from St. Louis made a few years back. It was just gorgeous. He used to have a website called vanishingpointcar or something, but it disappeared a few months after I found it. It detailed the process he went through to turn it into the Vanishing Point Challenger; it was an amazing website, and had tons of pictures and details. Great video! I'm sure it sold for a LOT.
The 1971 movie car was a 440Mag, not a Hemi. The remake movie for T.V. (awful) was a hemi. I didn't know that they destroyed that many challengers in the movie but the car that actually smashed into the bulldozers was a 68 (?) Camaro
Barry Newman remembered the challengers as being 440 4 speed cars that were geared really low and felt very powerfull, almost too powerfull; there was also mention of one 383 automatic equipped car that was almost as fast as the 440's. Top speeds were around 110 due to the gear ratios, plus some scenes, like the one with jaguar were shot at 50 miles an hour. I always thought of hopped up to 160 or to believe it's supercharged as just dumb movie jargon.
@7seriesmax actually it was not supercharged but was a 440. They used several for the movie and 1 or 2 383 camera cars, but no Hemi. Now if you are talking about the made for TV on FOX movie with Viggo Mortensen, then yes, that car was portrayed as a Hemi Challenger.
Not to nitpick but in the movie the car is supposedly "supercharged" according to the cops in the movie. Add a supercharger kit to that car and throw in the sound track and you'll have your car.
If i would own a real Hemi-MoPar and used it at the stoplights, there would be at least 3 non-Chrysler engines that i would have great respect to if the opponent had a car with any of them: Chevrolet 427 L88/ZL1, Ford 427 SOHC ''Cammer'' and Chevy 454 Ls7, you should never underrestimate your opponent in a race, that can cost you the victory, even if you have the most feared car/engine combo. Great car!
They need to lose the hood pins and get the front bumper guards too. The movie car didn't have the pins. And yes, the mystery chrome mirror. I've heard rumors that it is off the Camaro that they used to crash into the bulldozers since it was rectangular and better for the camera for getting footage in the mirror vs. the round one the Challengers had.
@iplayveryloud - Wrong. The car was a 440 and was only "assumed" to be supercharged by the police. Kowalski then said to his black friend prior to the bet that it was "hopped up to 160" and that could be taken any amount of ways. I took it as it will do 160mph as, well, it can and being a highway chase film, it made sense. Can't believe 3 people liked your comment about it being bored 160??? LMAO..0.30 is heaps but 160, back then, on a brand new vehicle lol.....
Your both wrong. In the E-bodies there were two base engine options offered in the 70 Challenger RT. 383mag or the 340mag. 440mag,440sixpack,426Hemi were all optional in Challenger RT option. Same goes for a 70 Barracuda with the Cuda option (RT=Cuda, Dodge=Plymouth)The 440mag was standard in all other B-body Dodges with RT option. I was there when they were new and buying/daily driving them.
The original movie used a 440 magnum/4 speed with regular gas cap and only a drivers side mirror (round) taken from the camaro they destroyed at the end. The stock challenger sport mirror didn't work for the rear camera shots during filming so substituted it for the round camaro mirror. No mirror on passenger side. The '97 remake with viggo mortenson used a 426 hemi or at least that's what was in the storyline. 4 challengers were used in the original and were all returned to dodge in awful shape and "supposedly" destroyed. So very doubtful that someone has an original movie car in their collection, but no one knows for certain. There are some challengers from the '97 remake in collections.
You're mostly correct. 70 340 Challengers never left the Factory with R/T badging. Those cars could be ordered with all the same equipment, just not the badging. Technically, there's no such thing as a "70 R/T 340"
no...it was just a standard mirror...it was almost never installed considering the ralley mirrors were more popular and the dealerships usually always ordered there cars with them. But it was a mopar mirror. good thing they used a camaro at the end. It didnt have a flip top gas cap either.... When he pulls into the place with the biker dude and naked chick u can get a glimpse of the 440 magnum emblem on the hood. It was rumored in the movie that it was "Supercharged" and not a hemi.
woah geez fellas!!! i thought i was a Vanishing Point fruit cake just for watching the film every time the missus has a night out with the girls! but mr Grunch73 and the rest of you are making me look lame to say the least!!,to be fair to you all (and i'm not having a dig) but your knowledge of it is making me go slightly dizzy. all i will say is It's a brilliant film, my absolute favorite by a mile.!!!!!!!!
I rewad that. I also know if you want Challenger to drive around town you should skip the Hemi and get a 440 if you want a big-block. The noticible power difference is not much but the 440 is a much better engine if you are not racing.
Yeah my uncle and I we're watching and aught that right off! So glad they used a dummy car to destroy, not that Camaro wasn't a good car but these Challengers are limited and priceless, like the Superbirds!!
LOL Big fan yes indeed, have a VP style car myself (see my vids). For the record, I was "dissing" you or anything remotely close, I was just trying to help and set (the often) wayward "facts" about the Vanishing Point movies straight is all. Cheers
Yeah I meant the 340+6 for 'cuda. My bad. I thought they used it in the challenger too. Anyways I read recently that 440+6 had a hemi like acceleration until about 70mph. Does that mean that the puny 340 had similar acceleration rate as the hemi?
In the beginning Kowalski's black friend asks: "This must be a souped-up somethin'?" to which Kowalski replies: "Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160". Meaning the car could run OVER 160mph. "Bored 160" LOL that's some bore job!! They say Supercharged but that is only PERSUMMED by the police talking to dispatch. The original car is a 440ci, they had 3 x 440ci & 1 383 (auto). The 97 Fox remake was MADE OUT to have a Hemi (badges) but it was really a 440.
i always for sum reason thought it was a 73....well now i knw lol i wanted those cars so badd i looked for months never found one so i went with a white 09 challenger manual :) no dissapointments here
Does anyone know of a white 70 Challenger in So. Cal.? We are having Vanishing Point Movie night & car event in lake Hughes Ca. Saturday 6/29/19 to honor our local resident who co-starred in the movie Paul Koslo he was one of the cops.
I was kind of wondering if a 360+6 pack was really able to beat the 440+6. Some ppl say it's possible to do this because of the smaller weight of 360, but then again 440 has bigger torque.
Hear ya bud. I had not one but TWO 70 Chevelle SS 396's. in 79 they both cost me $1000.00 used. Junkyard parts, when you could find them WERE cheap and you're right. It's now a joke. MY Chevelles went for $3,800.00 NEW. $38,000.00 wont even get you a SNIF today. SAD
Sorry to disagree with you, but there is no 440 Magnum Hemi. There is just the 426Hemi and the 440 Magnum and a 383. I have a '68 Charger R/T I am restoring. The only possibility could be a stroker motor that has been bored out. Chrysler never had such an engine.
No. In the original film, 4 challengers were destroyed. The last car (a 383 with auto. trans.[used to tow the Camaro shell into the bulldozers]) is in a museum in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. There's also one there from the 1997 film.
1971 vanishing point borrowed 8 new challengers and Chrysler was mad they showed drugs and whores , so they took them back and crushed all 8 ! watch the credits 😃
@2BETUBE The seats are extremely right, I took stills of the desert scenes were K meet the old man (original movie). I prefer the car used for the shots instead the stunt cars. You are right with the other specs.
@TheMopar01 It sounds neat, but"destroyed" is actually a bit of popular myth. The cars were on loan from Chrysler Corp. and were returned to Chrysler after filming - all quite driveable,
@2BETUBE The seats are extremely right, I took stills of the desert scenes were K meet the old man (original movie). I prefer the car used for the shots instead the stunt cars.
@iplayveryloud - its been a while sicne I saw the movie, but I thought kiwasky said, "its hopped upto 160", meaning it will go 160 mph. I maybe wrong again, but As far as I know you can't bore a motor 160 over. the most you can go is about 40 over.
Lots of stuff wrong about this car compared to the original movie car. Hood pins, bumper guards, engine, door mirrors, tires, and I'm guessing the gas cap and spare tire too.
Actually, and with all due respect, you don't know what you are talking about.....A "hemi" head, means "hemispherical", which means that the spark plug goes directly into the center of the head. Please don't do that again....It's embarrassing...

Kowalski delivered a 440 Challenger, not a Hemi Challenger...
yes
not hemi
Bruningable. Kowalski never made the delivery. 1st film.

@@ricklochead1032 I know that feeling. Are you still alive?

Getting to a buck 160 is fine by me! Gotta love that car. I might watch that tonight. It has been a while. Thanks everyone.
as long as the cars white and has a pistol grip im fine with it :) good job bro!
I love this car and the movie!

I want it, I want it, I want it!!!!!!
Very rarely I am reduced to a drooling child over a car but this has managed it!!! how much is it?
A replica should have a 440.
@iplayveryloud - Wrong. The car was a 440 and was only "assumed" to be supercharged by the police. Kowalski then said to his black friend prior to the bet that it was "hopped up to 160" and that could be taken any amount of ways. my father loved this movie and built a replica exactly like this to give to me, i'm just wondering about how much it would sell for?
I knew that. I also know that the movie Challenger (made in 1971) did NOT have a hemi, it was a 440. The (awful) TV remake did have a hemi
There were no 70 340 R/T's. 71 - Yes
the Hurst Pistol Grip shifter rules but it would be alot nicer with a 440.

One car used had a HEMI This was stated by Barry newman in an interview. Car looks great !!
@2BETUBE
Finally someone who really know the movie-car!!
I'm so tired of everyone having the wrong steeringwheel and missing centerconsole
woah geez fellas!!! i thought i was a Vanishing Point fruit cake just for watching the film every time the missus has a night out with the girls! but mr Grunch73 and the rest of you are making me look lame to say the least!!,to be fair to you all (and i'm not having a dig) but your knowledge of it is making me go slightly dizzy.
all i will say is
It's a brilliant film, my absolute favorite by a mile.!!!!!!!!
My uncle supplied them ,he was working at Chrysler leasing in SoCal at the time
My dream car!
I love this baby!
I rewad that. I also know if you want Challenger to drive around town you should skip the Hemi and get a 440 if you want a big-block. The noticible power difference is not much but the 440 is a much better engine if you are not racing.
They used a Camaro at the end of the movie to destroy. if u hit pause , u can see Camaro tail lights right before the hit
No better car to destroy then a Chevy over a mopar
Better yet, after the crash, you can see the Camaro fender nameplate upside-down in the lower left corner of the screen.
Yeah my uncle and I we're watching and aught that right off! So glad they used a dummy car to destroy, not that Camaro wasn't a good car but these Challengers are limited and priceless, like the Superbirds!!
mickey shea
Yeah you're right about the end of the movie. I'm sure that challenger used 440+6 pack not HEMI. 🤘🤘
LOL Big fan yes indeed, have a VP style car myself (see my vids). For the record, I was "dissing" you or anything remotely close, I was just trying to help and set (the often) wayward "facts" about the Vanishing Point movies straight is all. Cheers
must say it was a good movie and the car looks pretty close (inside not so much)
440 magnum not hemi not 6pack
but the original one did not have a hemi it had a 440
They used 440's AND 383's. 5 440's and one 383 with an auto.

i wonder if cars like these can still be bought. even if its not a replica.

Espléndido, muchos recuerdos!!!!!!
can anyone tell me where i can get the cd of vanishing point
are you talking about the soundtrack to the movie?
No...the HEMIS used Carter afb......aluminum Four Barrel....
Unfortunately movie makers never stopped destroying muscle cars.
The Hemi was in the 2nd movie
@TheMopar01 It sounds neat, but"destroyed" is actually a bit of popular myth. The cars were on loan from Chrysler Corp. and were returned to Chrysler after filming - all quite driveable,
wheres the rim blow steering wheel and the standard style chrome mirror that no one ever saw.
K thnx m8 for the info.
In the 1971 movie it was not a hemi car. You need to do your research you are wrong. In the 1971 Movie it was a 440 car.
@iplayveryloud so theres a 85% (almost) chance that your 100% sure?
Wanna hear the damn thing run!
Ive got the same exact one...
@2BETUBE i agree but the video says ''replica'' that dont means is exactly the same challenger with the 440 and the console
@jwdundon Yep. I've seen this flick about 150+ X. He says "Yea, it's hopped to to do over 160"; meaning MPH...
@iplayveryloud thanx im here all week!
I maybe wrong again, but As far as I know you can't bore a motor 160 over. the most you can go is about 40 over.
yeah, i want this quite badly...
erm isn't it supposed to be supercharged?? or am i wrong?
but he buys speed off that guy then tells him its hopped up to over 160?? what do you think??
....and on the 8th Day; God created HEMI!---old advertisement slogan in a car mag of the late 60s and early 1970s..
Lots of stuff wrong about this car compared to the original movie car. Hood pins, bumper guards, engine, door mirrors, tires, and I'm guessing the gas cap and spare tire too.
A Hemi Replica can cost anything from 70,000$ to about $100,000
darren dorion read the headline'IT'S A REPLICA. WTF :(
@2BETUBE
Maybe more accurate as the car from the remake though, which was a Hemi. He doesn't say which version of the film this car is replicating.
@2BETUBE I bet most of these guys just think getting a Challenger R/T and painting it any shade of white is the same thing.
did not have a console either! the engine depends on witch movie!
@2BETUBE there was no console in the movie if u watch closely
Class Motor
I think you may find that in the original movie they used a rt/se which has the wider rear window surround
It would help to watch the movie before making a replica of the car. It's a nice car, either way though.
Eu assisti esse filme , e voces esqueceram a placa que é OA 5599
They sell 440 Engined '70 Dodge Challengers all day long, look in Ebay
Where's the consol?
@Mr70ChallengerRT a 440 magnum is a hemi lol i have i 1968 dodge charger with a 440 magnum hemi
Easy to install and mod any engine to make it a hemi. bore out the cylinder heads and so forth.
Actually, and with all due respect, you don't know what you are talking about.....A "hemi" head, means "hemispherical", which means that the spark plug goes directly into the center of the head. Please don't do that again....It's embarrassing...
Kowalski !
I'd actually destroy a bugatti if u let me have 1 of these in return
@2BETUBE - To go a step further and correct you, the seats ARE correct, yes, the VP car was a C16 code vehicle so it should have a console, the Rallye cluster IS correct and agreed the steering wheel is wrong. The car is also missing the front bumperettes, has 2 (incorrect mirrors) (should only have one) and of course the air cleaner is incorrcet, it's the Hemi setup, as you know it runs a 440. Phew....wannabes....LOL......
Wasn't Kowalski's a 1971? Nice machine though
The movie was released in 1971.
@7seriesmax ... maybe you should watch the movie yourself. The cops assumed it was supercharged, nothing more.
Not too sure how much, but for sure a 440 car is cheaper than a hemi.
did not have a console either!
The one in the movie was a 440 Six Pack w/4 speed.
Incorrect. The car was a 440 / 4-barrel with a 4 speed.
like my granma!
@2BETUBE ...and the movie car had 14" ralleys because (news flash) IT WASN'T A HEMI! This car obviously has the 15's. Amateur's!
@TheMopar01 good news if you watch the film they wreck a camaro instead
440 six pack would have been a better choice on the street
Kowaski's car was a supercharger equiped 440 numb nuts. watch the movie again and listen too
@Dogapsa so what is that like 10 bucks? lol
MECUM all over myself. LAMO
nothing worse than mopar build quality
in th movie te car was a 440, i think u should go watch it before u make a video
its not a replica. the original car had a 440 magnum.
