Experiencing different role is pretty expensive though.. especially if you’re already at a job that is competitive and was difficult to land

Agreed - it only makes sense to switch roles if you feel that your current role isn’t a place where you can stay long term. It’s easier when you’re a student because you can do internships and join clubs to get different experiences.

Matt. Always like your well structured thoughts and with extra layering which draws on tailored experience 😂😊 May I know how and to what extent research skill ( public policy and microeconomics ) contribute to consulting career ?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'd add that people working in business should always reflect on their days and decisions.

5:14 did you eventually learn how to/get the hang of learning financial modelling, or 'technicals' as they say? A lot of my peers (junior year) have already done internships at boutique firms over last summer. sure, they got them through family connections, but they were still able to carry out tasks such as financial modelling so as to flex on their final university applications. In this way, I'm kinda in the same pickle as you were at your IB internship. And I don't even know how to start!

Hey James! Great question, I did eventually learn how to model proficiently through a combination of self studying and also learning on the job. The technicals can feel intimidating at first but they aren’t rocket science and anyone who puts in the work can get the hang of them. I’d also be wary of your peers who put “financial modeling” on their final uni apps - many students tend to exaggerate the extent of their experience and in my experience investment banks don’t often give interns access to the model on a live deal (often times it’ll be a simpler practice model). For technical prep just start with the Breaking Into Wall Street guide and if you want to learn modeling I recommend sites like Multiple Expansion, 10xEBITDA, and Peak Frameworks. Hope this helps!

Hey Matt, I'm an MBA aspirant my studies will be starting from July. So I have a half year to improve my profile, I know big4 firms look for spikes in our resume, so are there any courses or skill related to consulting that I can get in these spare time...!

Hey Hyphen! I think the best thing you can to beyond courses is to try and get some actual internship experience that is related to consulting (even if just tangentially). Work experience is always viewed more favorably than certifications or courses in consulting.

Hey Yong! Research skills are highly relevant to consulting - the job can be very research heavy at times, especially if you are working on a topic that the firm hasn’t done much work on. Hope this helps!
