I love your videos Matt! I’m in my UG penultimate year and trying to get into mbb consulting firms. I’ve watched all your consulting videos, and they’re all so relevant to people in my situation! This vid was no exception. Before I thought networking as a mostly in person thing, but you’re so right that it’s also digital. In fact, now that I think about it, the people whom I should talk to (mbb consulting employees) are pretty much all on LinkedIn, I don’t think there’s an more direct way to find them than just contacting online. Maybe focus more on that and rethink how to approach in person networking. Thank you for the videos Matt, I think this saved me a lot of time!
Thank you for this video, Matt! I am currently at my 3rd year college, and I'm planning to expand my network by meeting new people, like through clubs, organizations, associations, etc. I will be definitely using your guide when meeting actual professionals in my field.
Thanks Matt. I'm actually doing a bit of networking, hoping to get into consulting next year. It would be helpful if you could talk about your real-life experience networking into banking or consulting back then. Like you said, where I tend to have the most trouble is the "maintain the relationship" phase. I understand one way to do it is to send follow-up emails after a few months (to update them about me or just simply send them some articles), but my questions are: (1) why would they care? and (2) what's next after I send that email? Thanks a lot!!
Hi Quan, great question! I think it's unlikely you'll stay in touch with every single person you have an initial chat with, but when you do have a good call and really click with someone, that is where it makes sense to maintain the relationship. It's a numbers game, and from my experience people will become more personally invested in your development the longer you maintain the relationship. Not everyone will care, but the ones who do will stay in touch with you and have a genuine interest in your development (plus it's self-gratifying when they hear that you landed an internship/job thanks to their advice). If you happen to be in the area, make an attempt to meet up for coffee in person. You don't have to update them super frequently if there's nothing new going on - the goal is just to have a network of people who you can reach out to for advice and potentially a job referral when the time comes to apply. Think of each person you network with as someone who increases your "luck surface area", and as you meet new people, you open up more possibilities and learnings that wouldn't have been available to you otherwise. Hope this helps!
Hey Matt, your videos have been really helpful. I want to ask whether I should reach out again to people with whom I had a relationship going on in the early stages but didn't develop anything beyond it, for a few months
Can you make a video for highschool students that are interested in majoring in finance? What can we put on our college applications to stand out? Particularly T20. Thankyou!

Like your hair. It looks super organized and there is like a straight line separating the upper side from the down side.

Never hurts to reach back out! You'd be surprised how receptive people can be.
