  • After exploring the massive ice caves at Byron Glacier located near Portage, Alaska we head home and prepare our equipment for the first snowstorm of the winter season. Removing snow and stacking wood complete a day's worth of work at the cabin.

If you have any real amount of snow, the snowblower is the way to go. It's what we used in Maine when we'd get 2 and 3 feet at a pop. We'd run out of room for snowbanks on our long driveway, that was never a problem with the snowblower. Many parts of Alaska just don't get that much snow, 6 of the last 7 years we just drove over it and packed it down, didn't plow/snowblow once. Funny side note, I was teaching in a Yupik Eskimo village, my roommate had family in Buffalo New York. He showed his students pictures of all the snow they got and they were absolutely astounded. Alaska is lots cold but not many places get all that much snow. Enjoyed the glacier footage and also really like the woodshed.

Great video. Always run your small equipment out of gas by turning off the fuel valve and run the engine until it runs out or gas. Ethanol in gas will plug your carbs solid with muck. I own a small engine shop and see this constantly. Thanks for the glacier video.

Guys - he is not just an old soul - he has an old body now too. He knows he has limits now that his hoomans may not understand. So he tries to pace himself without scaring them so they don't leave him at home. As long as he can pace himself, he should be OK. When he stops doing that, he may have to stay at home when they go on adventures.

That Glacier was amazing, what an experience that had to be. It's weird to have such an overwhelming "homesick" feeling for a place I've never been. Alaska has always been and will be my dream destination. I thought with my wife living there for 8 years that she would want to move back ~ nope. Thank you for helping me to live vicariously through your videos, I am really grateful.
Haven't enjoyed any snow for the past decade since moving from Ohio to here in Oklahoma. I know it's a lot of extra work but it was always nice to have and helped to insulate. You two are such a good team, you're a couple of go-getters for sure.

You have such fun toys -- six wheel Polaris, two snow mobiles, a snow thrower. Admit it. They are not tools, they are toys. You enjoy scraping the snow off of things. You love hitting the snow off fence lines. Admit it. Bo and Bandit are such wonderful pets and good companions. You also enjoy being with each other. It is so silent right after a snow storm ----- when the snow is still in the trees. I love walking through two foot deep snow. I know, I am like a 76 year old kid. It is so fun when it first snows. I love it when it is really cold outside, like at night, and tshirt weather by the wood stove. One time I was standing by my wood stove in my long underwear, in the cabin, surrounded by new snow. I heard scratching on the closed door into the kitchen. It was spooky. The only thing I could imagine was Big Foot. My heart started pounding. Something was in the kitchen. Something was making scratching noises. I grabbed a ski poll, holding it with the point down. I jumped up on a big chair and swung the door open ... only to find a very tiny little mouse scratching at the door. It was so cute I had to laugh. The eiry silence of new fallen snow does strange things to the imagination. Have I ever told you the ghost story of Kibal Charly..............

Thanks for showing us the beautiful glacier cave! Really neat! Mmmm.... that water looked so good! I'm from Flagstaff, AZ and I remember drinking ice melt from the mountains in this stream that would come down and it was so pure and clean and cold! Loved it! I feel sad for the poor baby moose without it's mother! Hope she didn't get killed! Maybe if you see the baby alone again, you can give it some food to help survive thru the winter. Love your videos! Stay safe and warm!

I'm glad that neither of you got sick from drinking melt water.
Dealing with that snowfall doesn't leave a lot of time for much else during daylight hours it seems. It looks like there will be lots of moose for next year's freezer too when the time comes.

A wise old dog, Bo is. He knows what's good, and what ain't. Woodstoves... good. Glacier caves... not so much.

The glacier is amazing!! Thank you for sharing that. Alaska is truly a beautiful place. I’m sure the snow creates a lot more hard work but it is beautiful. Stay safe from NC.
