I simply can not stress enough how much my wife and I enjoy your videos! If only we were 30 years younger. In so many ways, you guys are not 'close to being beautiful'. You actually are! LOL. We admire your knowledge, creativity, courage, self-reliance and energy. Also how you treat your animals. All of them. Both of you are such a great example for those who have had enough of the city life. Way to go!
For the fish eggs, use a netting almost like a tennis racket but more fine. Gently rub the fish eggs over the netting and they should come off the membrane much easier.
Yes i was going to say the same thing. For the size of egg just use a similar size mesh net or wire to rub the eggs against into a container. They could have had a massive surplus to trade with their neighbors or save for chicken feed.
Wow, you guys are in high gear preserving the bounty. Everyone is eating well now and as winter sets in. It is good to see you work as a team. My Mom did all the canning through the heat of summer and she pretty much ended up hating having to do it.
I have followed you both since you left Oregon. In your 26 months you have made ALASKA Proud. Thank you for teaching us so many ways and ideas to carve out a little bit of POSSIBLE !! ❤
I have really bad anxiety and so hard to fall asleep and almost anything i watch will trigger something bad but watching your videos is soooo relaxing and just pure joy before sleeping 💛💛💛
Josefine Johansson....That's amazing! Many years ago I had anxiety as a child (I had some medical issues that the doctors couldn't diagnose UNTIL I was 28 yrs old. I was teased unmercifully in school) and my parents put a TV in my bedroom and it really helped me to relax and fall asleep. (Back then of course TV wasn't on all night like it is now, so after the TV went off at 1:30-2:00 am, the radio would come on. (My dad made timers that we plugged the TV set and the radio in, so that when the timer turned the TV/Radio off, you could just push a button and re-start either the TV or the Radio. I sleep with my TV on...and to me it's relaxing. I have medical issues that wake me up a lot, so I will just wake up and either watch TV or read until I fall back to sleep. It's great to know that videos help you with your anxiety......it helps me too!
these people are truly amazing clever, positive, hardworking, very well organised they have "a true life"....living on a beautiful place , eating good organic food , being very active ...
You two prove every day that life should be a lot simpler and that the system we live in is taking advantage of everyone in it. Your life is so full of all you need its a beautiful way to live. Thank you for your kindness and inspiration and all the lessons that are so important right now.
I love how capable you are without using gadgets and heavy machinery. My only advice as life changes is continue to take care of each other, even when it’s difficult. After 15 years and 3 kids it is still the best advice I have heard yet. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm from Poland. I grew up on fresh milk. When the milk turned out to the sour yogurt we were happy (not like today, when milk is old and taste awful), we were drinking it to dinner usually. There's so many different ways to eat it. It was delicious 😋 Great memories ☺️
you are so write I talk to Polish friends and our childhoods were like you are saying I've started going to Forrest for mushrooms with my friend Anton A family trip out We love it Stay healthy Marta and take care of yourself Pete and Dottie
@@peteranddorothybowles5428 thank you! I live in Illinois for 6 years now and the thing I miss the most is wild mushrooms picking. Not only you are allowed to go to the woods in Poland for most of the time safe and relaxing walk, but also you can pick the delicious mushrooms and take them home without any fines or concerns that you are on some else's property. Till this day when I visit, I try to go there around the time when they are in growing pick. Chears.
You both have the most amazing happy smiles. I watch so many of these homestead videos and by far you both are my favorite. You both keep it real, no click bate and are all around intelligent and beautiful people. Thank you for bringing me along on your journey, living your dream. I know Mother Earth will always be in your favor, you treat her very well.
I started in the "back to the land movement" early 70's and have been doing this kind of lifestyle ever since, BUT I have learned so much from you guys! You obviously have been doing this for a while, in Oregon and before. I grew up in the Bay Area and went to college in San Luis Obispo, bought a 6 acre lot and built a house from a recycled WWII surplus Army Barack , all while in college. I put myself through college with a Chinese Catering business and grew my own chicken, eggs and vegetables for it. The one thing I want to introduce you to is Egg Foo Yung (EFY). It is so easy to do right out of your garden, but you will be amazed how good it tastes. I sprout mung beans, broccoli seed, perella seed, alfalfa, etc. Sprouts are so easy to do, flavorful, and nutritious, even in winter, and it doesn't take very much room EFY is mixed in a bowl. Add chopped onion, chopped sprouts, chopped leaves from your garden, some chicken, meat, fish, or concentrated leaf protein -- and of course eggs. If it is too soupy add some flour or pancake mix. You stir it up, spoon it out into a frying pan, and cook like pancakes until golden brown. I usually put a gravy or sauce on top, which adds a lot. You can make a quick sweet and sour sauce by simmering a little water, a little gourmet vinegar and your favorite jelly, or you can make a gravy from Bragg liquid aminos and garlic. I used to make a wine from elderberries and let it turn into vinegar. Delish. There are an infinite number of variations. From start to finish, it takes less than ten minutes to make EFY. It was so easy to do after a long hard day in the garden.... The unexpected thing I have learned from the two of you is that while Alaska has a short growing season, the days are so long, things grow better and faster. It looks like it works better. Frozen soil in winter is the best kind for growing potatoes. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I know this is an old video, but it popped up in my feed. I’ve been watching a few now and am hooked. You two are remarkable! How I wish my parents were alive to watch all you do. They were city gardeners with farm-style mindsets. They gardened and canned and taught me a lot. My dad prided himself on his peas but I always thought his kohlrabi was the best. And we loved it raw. Thanks for your wonderful channel. ❤️
I love your lifestyle! I enjoy watching your channel and you are one of my favorites. In a loving way, I'm jealous of all the fun you had storing and preserving food. I have been canning this week as well. I canned apple pie filling, succotash, stewed tomatoes, and tomatoes juice. I blanched and frozen zucchini and squash. I sliced and frozen onions and green peppers. I was gifted some more apples, onions, zucchini, and green pepper as well as a few sweet potatoes. I purchased some peaches. I have some more work to do. Love you all. Keep working hard and trusting God.
You may be homesteading but those of you who are doing the videos have a beautiful kitchen to work in. I have to really improvised where I am at this time but I really appreciate all of the videos so many people have shared. I had older parents that went through the depression but I don't remember a lot of canning and such going on. I appreciate all the ideas and shares. I also read some of the comments to learn more. Thank you again for all of your time and inspiration. From Southwest Washington State USA!
I just love watching the two of you interact. Your love is the kind of love that I hope to one day find! I have been BINGING your content and everything you are doing and sharing with us is fantastic!! Thank You! 💛💛💛
Well, ya know, I'm still waiting for my dinner invite....I just love what you're doing-your garden-harvesting and conserving it-your video style (I've mentioned that before)-how you enjoy your food and efforts. I know, we're not seeing everything, but that's not the point. The point is that you're doing it; doing your best to make it work. And, quite frankly, I wish I was 30 years younger. And, when's dinner! :-) I might be a little late; I'm in Germany.
Just had to pause the video here, because I remember when I was young when we fed our chickens greens and vegetable peelings not only did the chickens like it but they repaid us with the most beautiful delicious dark orange eggs. You took me back in time. Karen from Canada
It is always fun to watch you harvest your veggies and prepare all the different things you do. I learn something new each time. And after all these years, I finally was able to hard boil eggs thanks to you Eric and your method, I could not believe the result....thanks!
Ariel and Eric, I love your videos, I look forward to them so much. Thank you for your detailed explanation of everything you do, I have learned so much this way and appreciate the knowledge and wisdom shared. My husband and I are working towards homesteading, and we've started by learning the skills needed to really be self sustaining. Your videos are our favorite and we've tried many things learned from you! Thanks again. Rooting for y'all on your journey. ~Amanda & David
Both of you are heading to living to 110 years old with your super healthy diet, and I commend you as you deserve it! Thanks, I always love watching your great videos as they inspire me.
I think your channel has become one of my high end favorite channels. I love what you do, the sustainable way you live your life and how you take care of everything to feed you and the animals. It is a calm place to visit and learn bunch of stuff. I have no experience of gardening, but this is the second summer i have tried to grow my own food in small patches in my garden. Leeks, onions, beans, sugar snaps, beetroots, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, chilli fruits, different kind of lettuce, strawberries, rubarbs, herbs and edible flowers. I am doing ok, and now i am learning how to preserve it all. Canning is a new thing for me, and i take great pleasure in watching what you guys do. Living in northern Sweden, we have the same kind of climate, summer is short, and everything has to grow fast to be able to harvest. Therefore your channel is giving me a whole lot and i learn alot in the process. I want to thank you guys for that. Something you should try, if not already done it, is to make chips out of Tuscan kale (if that is the right name). I believe i saw it in your garden. Hack it up, put vegetable oil on it, some salt and put them in the oven for like 7 minutes. They are delicious, and makes a great treat if wanting something else than potato chips! The taste is really coming out and it is crunchy and so good! You guys should make a cookbook. I would by it for shure! Thank you for sharing. :)
Watch you and each video is a pleasure of learning. At my age think of that!!! Evidently it’s never too late. Canning was never my “fuerte”. Hope for many more videos from you. Loveya ❤️
I am always so amazed at the abundance of your garden. Even with canning, freezing and eating fresh, do you actually eat it all? Or do you share with others or sell some of the veg? I really love watching how well you work together.
I have been following you guys ever since your move and always look forward to your videos. The count down has begun for my move and a simpler life. North to Alaska!
It's 2 years later, I live in South East Texas so not even similar climate, I have a large family, and not near as much time as I'd like to fish and hunt. Yet I still love your videos😂 even though I live much differently I love your tips! They are simple and very well explained which is much appreciated when I can understand it over screeching young children. Also applaud yall on your team work in the kitchen, when I am canning I need everyone OUT of my kitchen😅 probably need to work on that.
Since you two are into pickling I thought I'd mention a regional speciality from where I am. Fish pickle with lots of onions and curry spices. It's an Easter favourite here in my home town. Really, really good. You can do the onion curry pickle on it's own without the fish too, and it goes really well with almost anything. Maybe something more exotic for you two to try. Just search for: "curry onion pickle malay cape town".
Beautiful seeing the bees pollinate. Bee population is down here in northern Illinois. Had a bunch all the time up until three years ago, this past year it was minimal. Maybe next season they come back in droves. Have a great day!
Hi! I am from Finland and we take a baloonwhisp and simply whisp through the fish eggs a couple of times when they are laying in the salt water brine. All membranes stick to the whisp. So easy and makes caviar totally worth your time. Thanks for your inspiration-great to see your somutions in a similar climate!
Thats also the way I like to do it I just do it in ice cold water and gently whisk it so not to break too many of the eggs. I always start with breaking the membranen with ny fingers and keep whisking til there are no more membranens sticking to the ballonwhisk. Then use the salt water brine and a bit of sugar.
Is anyone else here also quarantining in a major city and longing for the great outdoors? Thanks to you two for providing some much needed mental escape in all this ❤️
Finally catching up with your channel. We want to cry whenever we see your garden videos. Our summer literally just started 2 weeks ago in our valley hole. Haha! It's really frustrating. Our corn, cabbage, squash, and tomatoes are coming along but if summer ends early we're hosed. Great to see you guys stocking up on food stores from the garden. The Keefer cheese and caviar looked scrumptious.
If you throw the veggies into some ice water, called shocking, after you blanch them they will stop cooking and stay nice and bright green for freezing.
Growing up in northern BC we didn’t have a garden, I actually didn’t think anything would grow in such a short season. Watching your videos over the last year has inspired me to grow my own (tiny) raised garden in Saskatoon. I’ve always considered myself a brown thumb, but I’ve managed to harvest quite a few different vegetables this year. Thank you for making these videos and teaching me that anyone can dabble in growing. Love your channel!
Awesome one really liked it! Loved seeing the outtakes and getting a taste of your camaraderie and personalities! One of the best most real channels on UA-cam IMO!
Another really interesting video. You two are so busy all the time and do so many different things. It is a pleasure to watch you especially when you support each other. We take the larger pieces of chicken and cann them with a little broth☘️
I would buy a cookbook from y’all in a heartbeat! How did y’all become so knowledgeable about gardening and your produce’s uses? I would love to get into gardening but i’m not really sure where to start. Hello from Texas :)
Hey guys, fermented cauliflower, beets and carrots are one of my favorite! I use horseradish, garlic, dried seaded dill....and any other spices you might like.
Can you guys do a video talking about any hardships/difficulties as you go through the seasons? I grew up on a farm and although it was the best time of my life, it was also very hard. I love your videos and enjoy watching your journey.
Wow you packed in so much stuff into this video. Awesome work and camera setup. ...just thinking it will be a pain to get out the flavour stuff from the vinegar with that bottle shape.
It seems that this year you will end up with more variety of things than last year so when you do your 30 day challenge (perhaps?) you will have more of a selection lol
wow that kefir cheese my mouth is watering. so wonderful the garden so abundant right now and lots of hard work to get it stored, but such a beautiful thing. very satisfying. awesome and thank you as always for sharing. hugs
This may be out of bounds to suggest the recipes of another UA-camr, but Dianxi Xiaoge was a cop in a city before she moved back home to help her family in rural China because one of her parents got sick. The recipes she's able to create on their farm from the food they grow might be of interest to you.
Years back I worked for Icicle Seafoods in Petersburg, AK. I did a week in the Egg room. We rubbed the eggs on a screen then. The eggs (chum) would go through the screen and the 'skein' would be left over. However. The Sockeye eggs was packed as they were into small tub's, like butter comes in, with lots of salt. Next time. Try frying the Sockeye eggs with the skein still on, in some bacon fat. Yummy! Go to your local Goldl Mining Supply Company or online and buy different sizes of screen and a pair of cotton gloves. 1. Rub your eggs (King, Sockeye, Coho, Chum, Pink). 2. Soak 2 minutes and rinse as you like. 3. Lay brined eggs on that Large Window Screen for 24 hours in cool dark area. 4. You now have Caviar! Jar up. Yum yum! For Sockeye. I would not rub them. I'd pan fry them only, or, I'd would salt brine them whole and jar. Snack time: Crispy fried egg sandwich with Sockeye Caviar. Yum!
Ya just have to keep watching, and bookmark your favourite videos. When I bookmark, I sometimes note with a timestamp, the place that's most important.
Hi I have been following you guys for more than a year now. I am from South Africa, I usually cannot wait for your next videos, love love love watching your show!!!! I am amazed at how well you guys manage to fend for yourselves, my biggest dream is to eventually live totally off grid one day!!! Thanks for always putting out such interesting stuff!!!
My wife likes your videos so much she won't let me skip ads when we watch them to make sure you get paid.
I never see ads. But wouldn't skip them either so you get paid
Hahah I do the same thing!!!
Me too
I did not know that! I will let ads play.....sheesh.

For the fish eggs, use a netting almost like a tennis racket but more fine. Gently rub the fish eggs over the netting and they should come off the membrane much easier.
Beat me to it.
Good to know. I had a terrible time with trout roe.
We use hardware cloth. Works great
Yes i was going to say the same thing. For the size of egg just use a similar size mesh net or wire to rub the eggs against into a container. They could have had a massive surplus to trade with their neighbors or save for chicken feed.
maybe like the tulle people sew with? the sewing netting

Have a great day!
My wife wants to know if you’re accepting interns yet for summer 2021? She can live in the chicken hut
PhillyFan344 😂😂😂
Hahahhaha 😂
😂
😂😂😂😂
Can I please come and eat with you
I love how creative you get with how to process it all. Got alot of good ideas. So greatful.
Thanks to you two for providing some much needed mental escape in all this ❤️
I get SO excited when I get the notification for your videos, even more so when it's a longer one, WITH bloopers lol. My lucky day
What a beautiful life you two have. May you always love each other!
Just found this channel and it’s one of the few I can actually learn something. So glad it’s just not a shirtless girl as a thumbnail
You guys have got such a pure lifestyle. Inspires me I grow a lot of these but not knowledgeable on how to use them.
You have a blessed hands, you can grow anything ; May God continuing blessing you, 💕
Wow thank you for finally explaining blanching! Everyone does it and i had no idea why! I love this channel
If you throw the veggies into some ice water, called shocking, after you blanch them they will stop cooking and stay nice and bright green for freezing.
Thanks for a wonderful relaxing evening that brought me back to my childhood.
I have been a subscriber for over a year and it literally just dawned on me that you guys are the real-life Ariel & Prince Eric! lol
Haha. Really. I twigged to that straight away.🤣
@@kathrynletchford8603 Totally missed that... Thanks. : )
Literally me yesterday while binging the last couple of months videos 😂😂
agirlandabear me too!!
Damn! How did I miss that!
You two make some really good food. And, you are truly soulmates. Both on the same page! That’s awesome!! ❤️😊❤️
Your garden produces such an abundance! 💕
Love the way you speak
Well, I think you two know how much I love this kind of stuff. It's so awesome to be part of the haul and putting up. Thanks!
I would buy a cookbook from y’all in a heartbeat!
How did y’all become so knowledgeable about gardening and your produce’s uses? I would love to get into gardening but i’m not really sure where to start.
Hello from Texas :)
I really hope they do a video on this ^_^
Just start with a small garden and a few veggies...lots of UA-camrs with growing tips
Rebecca, start watching Jess at Roots & Refuge and I gurantee you will be gardening before you know it :-)
@@edelcj will do, thanks!
1:10 chicken leg soup is the best in the world...I just love your videos...the garden is wonderful!!!
Hey guys, fermented cauliflower, beets and carrots are one of my favorite! I use horseradish, garlic, dried seaded dill....and any other spices you might like.
Back in Maine we planted purple top turnip for both eating and to feed the whitetail deer. They love them as much as us.
Can you guys do a video talking about any hardships/difficulties as you go through the seasons? I grew up on a farm and although it was the best time of my life, it was also very hard. I love your videos and enjoy watching your journey.
You have the most beautiful lush garden I've ever seen. Your soil must be amazing!
You two have inspired me to urban homestead. I live in a city in southwestern Ontario.
One of my favorite video of yours is about canning and preserving your food 👍
Wow you packed in so much stuff into this video. Awesome work and camera setup. ...just thinking it will be a pain to get out the flavour stuff from the vinegar with that bottle shape.
I really like how they are champions of not wasting barely anything. Even though meat that has been used for stock has no taste
It seems that this year you will end up with more variety of things than last year so when you do your 30 day challenge (perhaps?) you will have more of a selection lol
wow that kefir cheese my mouth is watering. so wonderful the garden so abundant right now and lots of hard work to get it stored, but such a beautiful thing. very satisfying. awesome and thank you as always for sharing. hugs
I was like: lucky chickens, eating caviar...
Also me: oh yeah they also get turned into soup... Haha.
😅👍
Love seeing both of them cooking together
at 3:11 top left at the wall:
"It's not how you fish, it's how you wiggle your worm."
Oh My, and this in the kitchen....
Wow those chickens really eat well! Lucky chicks
This may be out of bounds to suggest the recipes of another UA-camr, but Dianxi Xiaoge was a cop in a city before she moved back home to help her family in rural China because one of her parents got sick. The recipes she's able to create on their farm from the food they grow might be of interest to you.
Thank you Ariel! You are always so pleasant!
In Russian it is read as [kef'ir]. The stress is on the second syllable.
Same in Romania 👍
@@MadalinaPVilcu Same everywhere I believe. Keh-fear for the english speakers.
Snack time:
Crispy fried egg sandwich with Sockeye Caviar. Yum!
Good to know!
BAIT !!
You know when Eric edits the video because we get Arielle’s blooper reel. 🤣 This channel has kept us sane through Covid, thanks guys!
I like the bloopers too. Your garden is beautiful, such healthy plants. When you put up food it looks really good.
I love this channel.
The chicken feet are absolutely delicious
I wish ya'll would write a how to book online.
Yes!
Ya just have to keep watching, and bookmark your favourite videos. When I bookmark, I sometimes note with a timestamp, the place that's most important.
They have a small blog but they dont updat it as much as youtube
A book, good winter project! I would buy a book with your recipes!!! Electronic or paper, either one would be awesome!
I wish they would write an actual book like Wranglerstar did!
I always like watching your gardening videos.
Am I the only one wondering how are they ever going to get all of the herbs, etc. out of the infusion vinegar bottle once it is empty?
I am so jealous of all of your fresh vegetables. and I bet the chickens just love this time of year with all of those lovely greens.
"You're close to beautiful but your just not" omg I love it, your blunt, and I get in trouble because I'm so blunt. Hey it is what it is isn't it?????
Hi I have been following you guys for more than a year now. I am from South Africa, I usually cannot wait for your next videos, love love love watching your show!!!! I am amazed at how well you guys manage to fend for yourselves, my biggest dream is to eventually live totally off grid one day!!! Thanks for always putting out such interesting stuff!!!
