Thank you for this video! I love Fantagraphics's Barks books and their EC Library is a very nice way to collect certain artists. I was interested in the Atlas Library, but I'm going to pass on all of them due to the white paper. I expect Fantagraphics to put together better looking books than DC, Marvel and Dark Horse. It's sad to see Fantagraphics surrender to ultra white and hyper glossy paper for Golden Age reprints.
I love Joe Manuel's art. I first learned of him through seeing some Speed Carter that somebody posted on their comics blog a few years ago. HIs figure drawing is thorough and heavily textured. I think his horror comics are fun. I agree that the Fantagrphics collection seems to be a bit of a let down. The western stuff and black knight adventures are kind of boring.I also agree about color reproduction. If they print the pages on some kind of toned or off-white paper, you could reduce the "white burn" you get from pages. The bright primary colors that were originally used on newsprint look would much better (and less of a strain on the eyeballs) if they just reduce the saturation. I prefer the scans I download from Digital Comics Museum or Libgen. Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for your comments. I’m pretty off the cuff when I’m talking about the books, so I’m hoping I don’t come off too negative. I’m definitely looking forward to the next volume.
Great overview! Only thing I don't like is the glossy paper, I prefer matte paper when it comes to old titles like these. Chilling Archives of Horror Comics has perfect paper for reprints of that era.
You compare Maneely to Kirby , but this guy died in an accident very young in the 50s, Kirby’s style was very tamed in the 50s too. It wasn’t until around 1965-66 that Kirby exploded into greatness. Had Maneely lived through the 60s…. Who knows. Besides as you can see in this collection Maneely’s art was getting better as the years went by, the earlier stories of any artist are usually modest.
Don’t take it the wrong way when I compare artist too each other. I’m not writing a review to put down his art . I was interested enough I bought this rather expensive book. I just usually make this comparison because to me growing up with Kirby as a kid I have a bias for the type of action he pioneered. So I’m really just pointing out where I think he falls as far as the pre-Kirby artist goes. I hope I’m pretty clear in the video that I make the case that although his action is not my favorite style, the quality of his art still made me enjoy his work quite a bit, and I’m very happy with the book and the fact that I’m much more a fan now than I had been.
@@ravesensation5533 Kirby was the King no doubt of that, just like you and many others we consider that most artist of that time (not all but most) fall short of coming close to Kirby. I insist, I wonder how Maneely’s art would have looked in the 60s. My book should arrive soon. Like you I’m happy to have it.
It is an absolutely great looking book. Not the most dynamic writing in the early stories at least, but it just looks so good it gives me great hope for the future volumes. I kinda wish now they would do some of the Timely titles, even though they been hashed through a far amount at this point.

I love Jeff Menaanelly's work
I appreciate him much more after seeing this book.
Beautiful books, Rave. That Joe Maneely collection is sweet. Happy New Year!
Thanks! Happy New Year to you too!

How did you get the book so early? Sent by publisher? Looks amazing...
No, I had it pre-ordered from Barnes and Noble and it just showed up a few days before Christmas.

I pre-ordered from Amazon, and it says the book should be out late January...
What do you mean by 'future volumes'? As in 'more Joe Maneely' or 'another artist edition'?
@@spirala9 I think it’s going to be other artists. I haven’t heard yet.
