CROM THE BARBARIAN: a new sword and sorcery anthology!
I had published Star Fighters .... I drew and wrote the comics . I got a phone call from John Jacobs asking if I could draw his stories and get the work printed and shipped out to him . He paid me right away so it was great ;; I could draw his weird stories and get paid immediately so it worked out great...
@@kenlandgraf6908 it would be great if Star Fighters were to get reprinted at this point too. Good luck at the Indie Comic Creator Con! I would love to be there but I just absolutely couldn’t get out of work.
The way I worked is I drew and wrote the stories..I drew first in pencil and then Stanton touched up the bodies and then I inked the art ... Dave Simons also did inking a did Armando GIl as they all worked in my NYC studio at the time
@@kenlandgraf6908 wow! How big was your studio at the time? How many drawing boards/desks were there room for?
The rat faced spider people was not written by me as it is credited. Brian Carter the letterer wrote story and art by Ken Landgraf but it was written by John Jacobs . Carter didn't list himself as the lerrerer
@@kenlandgraf6908 I wasn’t sure who came up with the look of the creature. But it does look like it might have been inspired by the movie monster. The story I’m really curious about is that first one where there seems to be no set costuming for the early races, but seems to be a mash up of different historical styles.
Thanks very much for commenting, Ken! I love your work, old and new, and I can’t wait to see what wild work of yours pops up next! Take care!
I was going to get this but now am on the fence. My absolute favorite Conan art is inked by Alfredo Alcala and there’s very little of that in this book. Those few pages included look outstanding but not sure if it’s enough to warrant a purchase. I’m not saying much of the other art isn’t good, just that it’s missing my personal favorite Conan art from over the years. Thanks for the page-through.
@@Lunzerland I understand. I love John, but there is so much more of his work I kind of wish he had just gotten his own book and we could have seen more by other artists. But then again, he did do so many more issues than anyone else. I really don’t know. I’m not sorry I did the preorder, but it’s not perfect.
Christian undertones like “beaver girl” is there any chance this cat wasn’t as Christian as he proclaimed? Lol . Alway great!

Still waiting for my book and last update was in December from the seller on Zoop. I logged on to Zoop and could not find any contact information from the creator to find more status. No longer supporting Zoop since that option to reach out to seller is not available. Will just continue to wait impatiently while wondering when my copy will show up. Thanks for a review.
@@FiveToolStudios sorry to hear that. It really sucks.
So sad I only picked up his comics just as he stopped publishing it. His art and brush work were still improving . So disappointed the story and his art will not continue and we are just left with these collections…
He did a lot of work for Marvel and DC but you really have to dig for it. And you have to be carefull because sometimes he is listed as having worked on books and he only did inks or a small 3 or 4 page section, not the whole comic.
@ravesensation5533 Really? A lot of work? This is before or after or during his own Xenozoic Tales? I remember hearing him doing a few covers and pages here and there, but nothing that would qualify as "a lot". Well, either way, a talented artist who stopped doing regular work way too early...
@ well, take a look at his wiki page. Again, because it’s so many titles and I have no idea what all these credits are for, so I don’t know what it would add up to.
So maybe all these credits wouldn’t add up to a lot, but I wish there was one place where I could actually see what all those credits were for. Thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the review and shout out, Dan. Truly awesome to be featured alongside so many interesting cartoonists.
When did you get your copy? I backed it and still don't have it. Saw that stores have it too. Getting really ticked off about this.
I got mine on Dec 19th or 20th, can't remember for sure. I would message them through the website for sure if I were you.
@ravesensation5533 I did a month ago and they gave the story that they had made pre-orders and we will get our when they get theirs shipped out. Then I sent another Friday night, waiting for that reply. Thanks

Any colorized horror & monster movies exist ?
@@bozoclown2098 there were some done back many years ago I remember. Ted Turner did some and released them on vhs, most famously the original King Kong (1933). Then a company called Legend did some dvd releases of public domain films including Night of the Living Dead. But honestly, I don’t really collect the colorized films and am not an expert on the subject. Although I bet now with AI they could probably make them look a lot better than they used too.
8:58 came here from WB Death and Return of Superman video, thank you for making this video otherwise doom for me.
So Al Williamson after all, no Bill Everett yet in vol 2 ...
@@spirala9 I hope they speed up the release of these titles. One a year so far, it’s gonna take forever! Although I don’t know how well these are selling, so maybe this is the best they can justify.
@ravesensation5533 I suppose they don't sell that well, considering the pricepoint and relative obscurity of the artists. You can get vol 1 discounted by 25% brand new
There's definitely a wrightson creepy/eerie collection. I don't have it but it's advertised in the corben one.
@@Cid-e3h I think the Wrightson collection is out of print and expensive. The Corben collection is also hard to get at a good price.
I hope Darkhorse reissues them both.
Wow! What a terrible presentation of a book of mostly great comics art! Not only is the narrator's descriptive vocabulary limited to two or three unexciting and too often repeated words, but he mispronounces just about every artist's name incorrectly, except maybe Adams and Toth. Sentimental or not, to think the draughtsmanship and anatomy of the early Smith art is anywhere near even a distant approximation of that of Buscema, Alcala, either Adams, Nebres, Kane or Isherwood only shows how little to nothing the guy doing the talking knows about either subject. A thoroughly amateurish, uninformed, unenlightening, simplistic and dull droning distracting detriment to a book of American art that speaks for itself!
Well....now we know where McFarlane's SPAWN's Heap came froooom 🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂😂😂
By Crom!
Thanks for one of the only reviews of the book I can find on here. Just wish you liked the genre so it would fit what I'm looking for a little more.
@@joshburns4863 well, I do like the idea of the genre, but the films themselves mostly fall a bit short. Almost every low budget exploitation films are just made for the money, but you can usually find at least the occasional film where film maker has some passion for the genre (or film making in general) shows through. I guess I am a little harsher on the S&S films then I am on say horror movies because it’s a genre with so few that get right what the books do so well.
@ravesensation5533 I get it, and it's not a knock on you. It's definitely niche but I love most of this shlock just like I do with bad horror lol.
@@joshburns4863 I love cheap horror flicks too. But there are also a lot of good horror movies to balance them out. I guess what I would really like are more films like The Sword And The Sorcerer or Beastmaster (without the animal friends). They get the magic and monsters right. Thanks for watching and I am definitely just shooting the breeze in these videos so I definitely think people will disagree with me and that’s cool.
@@ravesensation5533 fair, again it wasn't a knock on you. You just happened to be the only person on UA-cam apparently to cover the book lol.
1:26 I loved that issue of What If where he fought Cap
Awesome looking book! Thanks for the overview. 💙👍🏼
I remember when BWS was doing Conan. Seeing him improve each issue was amazing up to issue 22 where Sam Rosen helped out. I remember thinking WTF? because of the drop in quality.
B&W Conan is always good Conan. As much as we all love BWS, Gil Kane does NOT get enough praise for his talents.
I’m just here for Buscema
Fantastic book! I picked up a copy thanks to your video. I'll make sure Schultz sends you a commission.
@@TheReverendStrange I doubt he needs help from me, but thanks for watching!
Thanks. I'll save my money. This is for Conan fans, and that's fine for them. It's not for particular types of art enthusiasts like me. I suspected as much and decided to wait and see. Glad I did. Some of the book is gorgeous but I would like less than a third of what was shown.
@@RAllenTucker yes there is art in the book that is not too my taste, but I am a huge Conan fan and for me the good far out weighs the art I’m not crazy about.
Worth it for Buscema alone.
Great review. Need to pick this up.
@@raphaelhamato7546 Thanks.
Most likely, I love Zaffino`s version of Conan much better than the rest.
Where can I get it? It looks amazing!
I put a link to a Bud Plant listing, but that is probably not going to be the only place to get it.
Looks like a great edition. Btw this was close to the size we were getting Savage Sword in Greece during the 80's and 90's. 15 years ago Anubis Publications started printing oversized Savage Sword books with complete arcs like The Black Circle etc. Big size, very heavy paper, varnished cover with metallic titles etc. They made 2 of them and then... financial crisis and all that. They were going about 15 euros back then.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the look at it. I was able to order a copy after watching your video yesterday. Can't wait to get it!
In my opinion the early Boris Vallejo SSoC Covers are the best. Sadly even the art for the covers declined on average, but still SSoC has for me still the best cover art for a long running series even during the late 80s and early 90s. Alfredo Alcala has used this style in his 1963 Barbarian comic Voltar and stated that this style will be used in US comics during this time, which came true later as he became the inker for John Buscema's SSoC. This art is the art of wood, copper engravings and early steel etchings or engravings for book printing in the line of Albrecht Dürer, Gustave Doré and Franklin Booth.
Alfredo Alcala is the greatest Conan comics inker and up to the SSoC #20 his art is only magnificent. Afterwards he mixes styles for faster drawing and this is where he loses on greatness. Barry Windsor-Smith is good, but his art is a hit or miss.
@@bathyalgames I love Alfredo and wish they had more of his work represented. my one criticism of the book would be that as much as I love John B, I would have liked to have seen more work by other artists.
@@ravesensation5533 You have mentioned that Barry Windsor-Smith has introduced you to Conan. J.B. has rather used Frazetta's Conan while Barry has tried more to stick to the R.E.H description of Conan. Therefore you have been introduced to a more authentic Conan. J.B has taken over Conan the Barbarian in late 1973, but i have to say that i prefer Conan the Barbarian by Barry. But both of them have missed the mark for a perfect Conan depiction. And there are many Barry Conan drawings that are really really great and much better than J.B., but then again there are drawings that i consider a failure.
@@bathyalgamesbws can barely draw man. Buscema makes everyone else look like a chucklehead, even Neal adams
@@reginaldforthright805 Buscema can work well with different perspectives and angles, but he barely drew Conan. He delivered mostly only sketches of figures that others had to fill out. So therefore Roy Thomas went to the Filipines to get Alfredo Alcala. And there are only a few drawings of Conan from J.B. that are also inked by him. Therefore you also see quite the difference in quality of Conan Comics that depended on the artist inking the drawings. But I will give that he has made a specific look for Conan in comics that has endured the times. Neal Adams on the other hand revolutionized the entire comics industry. And BWS is, as I already said, a hit or a miss. Some of his Conan drawings are great and some are just bad.
@@bathyalgames John Buscema excelled at dynamic figure drawing - getting a sense of movement and solidity with sophisticated and simplified forms reflecting a vast anatomical knowledge. All this is captured at the sketch stage. So while yes the inker affects the finish, buscema’s essence is still there. And I do like Neal Adams a lot. However, he is nowhere near as good as Buscema at the above. Like most comics artists, he focuses heavily on surface details.
Hadn't realized that it was released yet. Looks fantastic!
@@StygianDogs I think I got it early because I did the Zoom crowd funding. I think it’s fantastic.
My understanding is the smaller Black Phoenix volumes collect all the material from the Black Phoenix anthology issues by genre, I guess as a way of reprinting it. So all the crime stories in volume 1, romance in volume 2, and superhero stuff in volume 3.
@@alfredo_schweeper if that’s the case I really missed it. Thanks.

The True underground Artist ...
The Art of Dan DeCarlo is a stunning celebration of the artist's ability to blend charm, humor, and playful sensuality in his iconic work. The book offers a rich visual showcase of DeCarlo's range, from defining the classic Archie Comics style to his masterful pin-up art, accompanied by insightful commentary on his creative process and cultural impact. Shaturday Morning Cartoons! I've watched every episode. They have a Thanksgiving episode airing tomorrow (Nov 23rd). And Caitlin is their best guest host. She's on so often I don't really consider her a guest host any more.
The original edition of this book was the same size with the exact same contents and layout as the new edition, but it didn't have the original art section in the back. The smaller sized book you're remembering was called The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo and was only the cartoons and illustrations he did for the adult digests, probably why they did the book "digest" size. I believe the other artists in that book series were Jack Cole and Bill Wenzel and I'm sure there was a second DeCarlo volume. I'm not a big Archie fan, but I like this sort of cartooning and DeCarlo sort of originated the style that everyone used in teen humor comics from the 60's onward. The Hernandez Bros talk a lot about Harry Lucey, one of the main Archie artists from when they were kids, and Bob Bolling, who wrote and drew the Little Archie books, which were quite different in mood and story style from the other books. I remember reading some when I was a kid, that must have been second-hand, that were full of the kind of peril that you might see in Carl Barks comics. Archie as a kid was considerably more mature than he became when the hormones kicked in.
@@russworks2882 hey, thanks very much for clarifying. The thing is I probably do have both the original version of this book and the smaller one and am just getting them confused because I haven’t seen either in a while.
