I might be in the "dog house" after making this video guys. Haha. My wife sees me running all around the house with a camera and talking to myself and I hear... "John, if you film our closet, I'll be so angry with you!"... Oops sorry honey! 😂
Before you actually acquire or bring your new Dobermann home; please check your area for a Veterinarian who can provide healthcare for your Dobermann! Not all Clinics are capable or willing or up to the standard necessary to handle large/medium dogs.
You forgot to tell folks you need to leave the bathroom door open...They love to come in and keep you company. Mine will actually try to shower on a hot day 😎
My irish setter would do that if you were the only person in the house. If there was more than one person he would go back to his usual activities, the less said the better.
I will say this, i can only hope my Doberman can live as long as he is healthy and happy. I will never regret sharing my life with him. He has been the greatest family dog and has absolutely made coming home to an excited and happy pup the best part of my day. Every Doberman I have met is by far more than friendly and happy to meet new people. Really awesome dogs! My big boy turned 5 back in May and I still enjoy every moment.
It's just wonderful to see how much you love and understand your doberman Arlo... Every upload is on point with easy to understand information and pointers on how to get it right.. you are a great man John......thank you for all your great work. 👍😁
Hi Thanks for this video!!! You read my mind. It applies precisely to me. I’m exactly that person about whom you refer in your opening statement: “Many potential Doberman owners are afraid to get their first Doberman...” Ever since watching, as a youngster in the 1980s, the TV programme ‘Magnum PI’ I’ve been completely enamoured with Dobermans. In recent years, my interest has been re-stimulated to the point at which (nearly a year ago) I was seriously researching and investigating the possibility. However, just as you’ve said, on reading some video comments and watching videos, I’ve discovered a lot of ‘superior’ viewpoints that have been very negative by promoting self-doubt in the Doberman-potential viewer... me being one of them. In this video, you’ve dispelled a lot of the concerns that had been - unfairly - pumped into my head by many of these ‘superior attitude’ people. A few questions, if I may... i. Are you speaking of Dobermans generally in this video, or of specifically American Dobermans? ii. Also, I’ve been terrorised into the idea that I can’t go away on holiday or for extended runs on my motorcycle if I have a Doberman waiting at home. What do you think about this aspect (I didn’t notice it referred to in your video)? Could I safely go away once or twice a year for a couple of weeks each time, with my Doberman (if/when I get one) left in good hands? Or would he - even in good care - become psychologically stressed? iii. I’ve been worrying as to whether or not my home would be sufficiently large. I’ve had doubts after (again) what a lot of comments have been saying. However, when I heard you say that Dobermans are happy even in a small apartment, it gave me confidence that my detached bungalow with 3x double bedrooms and large garden would be perfectly suitable. iv. Is it normal to have them neutered, as with some other dogs? If so... implications? Pros/cons? I’ve found no info on this anywhere. v. Are Dobermans more prone, less prone or similar to other dogs (generally) as far as loud, unsolicited barking is concerned? vi. If getting a previously-named puppy or adopting a Doberman, can his name be changed with a bit of specialised training for him to adapt and become accustomed to the new name, or is it not advisable? Now, there will undoubtedly be ‘armchair experts’ reading my queries and saying ‘if you have to ask such questions, then you shouldn’t be a Doberman guardian’. Well, I don’t care... I’ll take the advice from those *I* deem knowledgeable enough. Furthermore, perhaps the fact I ask so many questions and do so much research qualifies me even more to take on a Doberman... Anyway, appreciating your advice. Thanks again D
Hi D, glad you are opening up to the idea of a Doberman! Yes, lots of superior viewpoints out there like you said. Let me see if I can answer a few of your questions: (1) I'm talking about Dobermans in general. (2) An adult Doberman would be totally fine. I do this quite often. As a very young puppy, it could cause some stress. You can do things to lower the stress too, like leaving them in the care of someone they are familiar with, etc. (3) 3 bedrooms and a large garden sound great to me! Honestly, where people run into trouble with small places is getting in all the exercise they need. So as long as you are willing to take the dog out to get any exercise he's not getting in your house (or garden) then you should be just fine. People in apartments do just fine, but they have to make frequent trips out every day of course (more than you'll have to make). (4) Yes, it's very normal. Pros/cons of doing this though is a LONG response that I can't go into here. That could be a whole UA-cam video by itself. Maybe I'll do it someday. But you should be able to find some info online. (5) A bit more likely to bark without appropriate training (their protective instincts can cause barking) than many other breeds. However, they respond to training a lot better than many other breeds (one of the best actually) so you have a solid fighting chance at successfully correcting the behavior in a Dobie. (6) Yeah people do this a lot. It can be confusing to the dog though during the transition so I urge people to avoid doing it, but it can be done. (My own separate point)... YES! Ask lots of questions! You are definitely MORE qualified to own a Doberman in my head because you are the type to research first and ask questions! A Dobie is going to be lucky to have you one day as his/her owner!
Thank you for all the work you put in your videos! I got a 5 month old european male Doberman and your site and videos help me a lot! They are straight-to-the-point (no excessive talking) which is a pro, very informative and they help clarify a lot of points. Also, your website is definitely a recommendation for both new and veteran owners. +1 Subscriber and God bless to you and your family!
I had a question, maybe you can help? I’m getting my euro puppy in a week and I live in a city, I was wondering how I could teach him to circle the perimeter of our home to know that’s our territory? And do it successfully without him trying to run off. I’ve had a xl bully that just didn’t stay at a safe distance and sometimes run off. Thank you for your time !
Thank you so much! I'm very happy when I hear I'm helping people. Yeah, some people just like to talk to keep people watching their videos longer with no real information to share. I feel like that's a pretty bad approach. I try to make videos that I would enjoy watching and hope others do too! I'm very happy to have you as one of my subscribers!!!
Wish I had these videos while I was studying up on the breed before getting my boy! It was a lot more overwhelming than I thought & almost gave him up, but now at a year and a half he''s calming down & so happy I stuck with it. Don't give up on a new Dobe, they are the biggest pests during puppyhood, but it'll be worth it!
Thank you so much for your kind words Majora. So glad to hear things are going well for you. And at only a year and a half he'll only continue to get easier to live with so I think you're in a great place. Just continue giving direction to him and making it clear what you expect of him and it'll only get better! Thanks so much for watching my videos!
I’m thinking about getting a Doberman in the future, your vids answer a lot of my questions. I got a few Qs of my own. 1. How are they on 2-6 hour road trip? 2. How are they when approached by a stranger or another dog outdoors? 3. What do they eat? And do they eat a lot to maintain that muscular look? 4. At home in at night time in the dark if I have guests sleep over and they have to use the bathroom should they worry about the Doberman when I’m asleep? 5. You just earned a new subscriber
Vlade Dodi I have a European Dobermann very different from your usual American Doberman Pinscher, so my answers may vary. 1) once he sets in the car his energy level really lowers down and he sleeps most of the time ( never been with him for more than 4 hours though) 2) completely depends on how the stranger approaches (speed, do they have something in there hands, are they making a lot of noise... 2 many factors to answer... 3) my boy eats 6 cups a day 4) no way if anything your guests might have a personal guard when they go to the bathroom (makes sure he meets them well and knows that they are staying in the room that night give them some treats to give etc
In my experiences with a working line the only problem is that if you are not a leader, your house becomes their house, I can’t say that Elsa is aggressive, but she is cold with strangers.
Working lines hv a diff side to their temperament. I've been in discussion with two breeders of working line dobes here in Oz and they breed some hard dogs
He's my best bud. Rescue. Not cropped or docked... He's 100 super goof. Loves everything from babies to rabbits, cats,a turtle and all dogs. Serious. It's hilarious. And hell yes he drools, especially if you're eating ice cream.
I have a red female. Had 3 black males previously. This one is definitely the cream of the crop. She is very active, intelligent, vocal, cuddly and affectionate.
I Absolutely love it man..! Your videos are great and expertly done. They’re also very informative. I don’t feel like I’m watching an ad, commercial or a boring lecture. You make it really fun. I look forward to opening my first Doberman fingers crossed. I will say, I’ll definitely be asking you a ton of questions as time goes by.
Thank you so much for taking the time to post this comment! Means a lot! Please definitely come back and ask questions! I hope you do get your Dobie soon! 👍
I love watching your very informative videos. We have Bella . We got her at 8 weeks old. 14 lbs. she is now 6-1/2 months & 65 lbs.! Our vet thinks she will easily top out at 80 lbs. She’s beautiful and people say that every time we walk her. She’s a real sweetheart. Very loving but sometimes playtime gets a little crazy 😂 a work in progress.. love all the information you give... very helpful.
Love your videos ! I’m picking up my euro this Monday coming up .. I have been checking your page every day to see if you upload more new videos to help me out ,KEEP THEM COMING !!! Thank you✊🏾😂
Thanks, Daniel! Congrats on the new puppy, that's so awesome! I will certainly keep working hard not to let you down. I release videos once a week. If you subscribe with that bell icon it'll notify you so you don't miss any... but you probably already knew that!
I had a question, maybe you can help? I live in a city, I was wondering how I could teach him to circle the perimeter of our home to know that’s our territory? And do it successfully without him trying to run off. I’ve had a xl bully that just didn’t stay at a safe distance and sometimes run off. Thank you for your time !
@@DanielPerez-xq4tk Just to clarify, you mean you are wanting to train your Doberman to stay on your property without running off? I assume your yard isn't fenced in, is that correct?
Correct! my back yard is , and it’s 10ft high all around , but I wanted him to run the front yard every once in a while ! And also... ear cropping style terms. I was looking with no success, if you could that’ll be GREAT ! regardless, thank you for your time !
Training him to stay in your front yard when you aren't present is going to be extremely difficult or more likely, impossible. It would also be dangerous for your dog. But you can certainly train him to stay in your front yard when you're there. It takes time to train him with you present. Consistency is key in never allowing him off your property and making the boundaries clear. To tell you how to train this is a pretty in-depth topic and more than I can answer here. Look up "boundary training for dogs" and you'll find the basics. Maybe I'll do a video or article on this in the future.
Just subscribed to your awesome channel! And I'm binge watching 'cause I'm getting my puppy dobe in 2 weeks! YAY! I had a dobe before and she was my all time favorite! I can't wait to have my pup home with me❤
Have owned 4-Doberman’s over my lifetime. And am in the process of adopting my 5th Doberman. She is a 2-year old female Doberman. Can’t wait to have my baby ❤girl!!! 3:38
Another great video. You are an inspiration. I have been watching your videos for a few months now. I’m not sure if you have a video on washing the Dobermann or not. I love to see your products and technique. Prayerfully I will be getting my first Dobermann in the spring. Again great content and thank you for all you do to promote the breed and educate the owners.
Hello, I am new to this channel. My 11yr old daughter wants a Doberman bad!!! I have always been a little unsure about the breed but have been learning so much with your videos. My main concern and only at this point is I have 3 cats and they are 2yrs and under. I wonder how a Dobie would do when he/she got older with my kitties? Other than that I think it’s an excellent choice of a new family member. I have really enjoyed the videos. I have been sharing with my daughters and my mom.
Thanks, great video. I've wanted a Doberman for a long time, we've had other dogs but I was worried my poor walking would stop me, but, where there's a will, there's a way. I don't live alone lol
OMG YES!!! The answer of the second question made me so happy!!! I was thinking about it all the time and it worried me so much. I do a lot of sports, like swimming and jogging. But I still was afraid that my apartment might be too small ...
Thank you so much for all the information! I'm a new doberman owner, she is only 2 months of age and damn she is like a tornado! So I really enjoy your videos showing some exercises! Thank you!
Thanks so much Abraham! I'm really glad you're getting something from the videos! And congrats on your new puppy! I'm so happy for you. You don't even know it yet, but you have so many great times still to come.
I think i am training my dob. Actually the dob trains me.it changes the tone and tune of the barking by the circumstances. Only thing we have to understand. Great guard dog.
Ok. Dobermans are a relatively recent (less than 250 years old) man-manipulated breed. They were 'designed' as protection dogs. In obtaining the traits he sought, Mr. Doberman also ended up with some undesirable characteristics. Long floppy ears are an easy handhold for a neck break. Long tails are an easy handle for incapacitating the animal, as well. Neither are good in a dog bred for protection. Also, the floppy ears do interfere with sound location. No natural ears are floppy. Think about it. Only dog ears, a product of man's breeding design, are floppy. Long whip tails are easily injured. At 3 or 4 days, there are no nerve trunks running down the tail. So, docking the tail at the appropriate time can be done without so much as an anasthetic. Long whip tails that get broken are a traumatic event for an adult dog. The requisite surgical removal of the damaged portion is not to be taken lightly. There are nerves and blood vessels in a fully developed tail. Dogs never quite recover their ability to walk/run/turn in a well balanced manner. Not a fan of well-intentioned trolls out there. So, let's get this over with. Dobermans were created by a man for the explicit purpose of protection. Crop the ears so Rover can hear and intercept an intruder with a greatly reduced probability of said intruder obtaining a killer purchase via convenient handles on Rover's head. Dock the tail so Rover learns to walk/run without it, without trauma. Also, it allows Rover to maneuver in pursuit of an intruder without risk of getting injured by the intruder grasping and yanking the tail. Most of the aversion to this comes from people who have no clue of what they speak.
I have adopted an 18 mos old male fawn colored doberman and he is everything good that you have described. He has a skin condition that reminds me of dandruff. Is this common and what is the best way to treat it? Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
I got 2 awesome dobes and both of them got used to spend time alone when I'm out. They're doing great and I have no complaints. We established a steady routine and it works well for everyone. Everything in the video is also what I've experienced, except my pups don't have any difficulty holding their bladders much longer than 8hrs.
Great informative video! My Dobie passed last month , she was 15! She would of lived even longer but cancer got her 💔, my question is I’m looking at importing a Dobie from another part of Europe where it’s legal to do the ears and tail,( it’s banned here in London uk ) and you said to do the ears takes months and I want my puppy no more than 10weeks when I get him so I’m thinking maybe they can do the military crop style when it’s very young and I’ll have my pup before 10weeks, my question is it cruel to do the Military crop where the ears are cut kinda short? And my second question is are all Dobies velcro dogs? Because my first Dobie was and I love it!! Please answer my questions it will mean a lot
The "cruel" question about ear cropping has been passionately debated on both sides and I really can't answer that. Most who believe ear cropping is cruel believe ANY ear cropping is cruel, regardless of the length of the crop. I haven't personally heard many specific arguments of why the military crop would be much different for the dog from the other crops but I'm sure someone out there would have an arguement on that. As for the velcro dog thing... YES! One of the biggest velcro dogs around! Get ready to never eat, sleep, or pee alone again!
Every Dobie I have met was absolutely a Velcro dog. Not towards everyone, but immediate family for sure and to some kind friends yes. If you are the primary owner, the alpha, then expect to be lovingly stuck with them.
I wounder...If i get a doberman puppy and work full time, how do i raise the dog, especially in the beginning when the puppy need you the most? Thankful for answer!
Hi Marike, it's totally possible but yeah it'll take more work until they are about the age of one and can be trusted alone for longer. I actually did a video on this topic. Search UA-cam for "doberman planet working full time" and it'll pop up. I think it will help you a lot.
I have a Doberman in Australia and the heat overwhelms her! She is the most intelligent dog ever and I love her to bits! I understand why Mr Doberman docked the tail on these dogs, their tail is like a wooden cain and can hurt you when they are in wagging tail mode!
Haha, I did! Hey I left another comment on your other video about how to introduce a donerman pup to a household of three toy breed dogs.. or even if it’s safe to keep the two breeds together? Would you be able to answer for me please? Really want to get a Doberman pup. I have a male chihuahua (neutered) and two un-spayed female chi’s (well ones a Pomeranian, but same size). I was planning on getting a female Doberman from about 11 weeks old. My male chihuahua is the boss usually and has no problem snapping at dogs if they steal his toy/bone/my attention, etc 🙈. So will it be safe to put a Doberman in the same house, and if so, how would I introduce them so they get along?
Sorry! Don't know how I missed your other comment. Your question could take a lot to answer (the are so many variables... including the individual dog's temperaments) but I certainly think it's possible. Introducing correctly will be key. Funny you ask this because I recently just wrote an article on this topic. Take a look it might answer some of your questions: www.dobermanplanet.com/can-dobermans-get-along-with-small-dogs/
My Dobie, Damian was bought from a backyard breeder but I do not regret it because I feel like I’ve helped to rescue him in a way. His sister dog, Nakia is owned by our good friends and next door neighbors as well. They both are so sweet. My boy is very protective of our home. He doesn’t like anyone walking next to it or close by. He will bark and growl until they are gone. It’s very hard to stop his barking. When we invite people inside he’s fine. He never acts aggressive at all. He’s never bitten anyone. He’s just very protective of the house naturally. I’ve tried to teach him to not bark so much but I’m failing at that apparently. Any ideas that might work. I’ve even tried the Cesar approach to training, nothing works. Other than that he’s the perfect dog. We even tried the collars with sound vibration and shock. I did not like the shock part so it was turned down very low and tested on my own fingers because I don’t like using punishment to teach, I mostly relied on the vibration but always starting with sound first. I gave up on the collar because it only works if he’s wearing it and I refuse to have him constantly wear this collar that has metal nodes on it that sit at the throat area. I’d love some advice that will work and won’t require expensive dog training. He is very smart, he learned all of the cute commands like, sit, lay down, give me paw and then other paw and even can choose which trays he wants on command. I taught him this as a pup in less than 10 minutes. No lie, he’s super smart. When my husband is home Damian considers him the leader, when he’s not home it’s me, he’ll still obey me as far as anything else except the barking issue. My husband is not consistent at all with any training and works long hours so it’s usually me with Damian. Side info., he’s amazing with my adult autistic son, he even predicts when my son is getting ready to have a meltdown of sorts. He senses it even before me. He never tried to attack anyone in our house. Or if he’s on a walk either. We also have 2 younger daughters at home, a 15 and an 11 year old. He’s great with them too. Any guest that comes over he’s usually very good with as well. He’s only acted funny toward two people ever, teen males. He didn’t do anything to them he just acted like he didn’t trust them. He watched them and growled a little bit but was controllable completely. What I need help with is a better more effective way to train him to only bark to let us know that someone is close by or knocking and then to stop. He turned 3 years old in March of this year, 2021. He isn’t neutered and now I think he may be too old to do that. I’m not sure though. Our local vet is mediocre at best. I don’t trust them a lot, they did accurately tell us to wait until he was after a year old before even getting him neutered. They did explain about the growth and bones maturation. Unfortunately they won’t even attempt the neuter unless we have a bunch of very expensive tests ran first. So just to neuter him was going to cost around $700 + that’s why he still isn’t neutered. 😔 I’d appreciate any advice to help with the barking issue. Lots of people walk their dogs and walk around the neighborhood a lot, especially in front of our house because there is a common sidewalk in front. Help… the barking is obnoxious at times and the only way I can get him to stop is by putting him in his crate for like a time out but as soon as someone walks by even from a big distance he barks like crazy. 😫😫😫
While the thought is sweet, you really shouldn't encourage back yard breeders. They are horrible and unethical and a great way to get your done to catch every genetic disease on gods green earth. So please. Don't encourage back yard breeders
Thanks for this video. I have one more question for you. What is the behavior of a Doberman with cats and chickens. When somebody lives on the countryside the dog could meet cats, chickens other farm animals.
I am going to be getting a Doberman puppy in August. I plan on crate training him with the crate in our bedroom at night. My question is will the dog be confused with two crates? My thought is to have one in the kitchen for when the time comes that we leave him during the day
I just started following you, and first, I want to thank you for making videos and for your web site.. I learned a lot even though I knew already many things about this breed. I just adore Dobermans, I and wanted to have one since I was a kid, but I never got a chance. So, now I know I will have that possibility in the future. But I wanted to ask you for some advice. Is a first time dog owner good owner for a Doberman? Because, as much as I love them, I am woried about being a good owner for Doberman, because of my low experience in owning any dog. I have taked care of my friends dogs for a while, but owning one is a whole other thing. I know it is very individual. :) but to repeat: Is a first time dog owner, in general good for a Doberman? So sorry for the long comment and for my English, it's nit my native language. :)
That's a totally understandable feeling. Honestly, I think a Doberman can be a great first dog in many ways. They're adaptable, easy to train, love sticking close to you, etc. The biggest area where someone new to dogs might slip up is with training. Both in underestimating the importance of continually training and providing clear, firm direction that can't be misinterpreted. If you're excited about the breed and spend a little time looking into it to understand their needs (which it already seems like you are). I think you can do great. Just decide how you are going to go about training the dog and have that CLEARLY mapped out in your mind first so that you can be clear and consistent with your training. If you are trying to figure out how to train as you go along then your signals to the dog probably won't be clear and consistent. And remember to be training somehow every day (even if it's simply practicing some stuff the dog already knows). But yes you can definitely get a Dobie for a first dog!
I grew up with a dobermann outside. He was rarely allowed into the house. It's never been a problem, because we were everyday outside with him. Can be easily done in countries with mild weather. The point is not whether they should stay inside or not, but the life style of the owners.
I’m wondering how you can socialize your puppy when the ears are cropped. The other puppies at the doggie day care or at the dog park will bite at his ears or knock the posts around. So I just wonder the best way to socialize your puppy with the ears taped snd posted.
I recently lost my Doberman due to dcm. I have a new baby on the way but also considered rescuing, however the number of dobermans that have been messed up by people who got them and shouldn't have is upsetting. Not all but most adults on rescue sites have so many warnings. No cats, no kids, no small animals, resource guarding, etc. Really scary how many of these poor amazing dogs have been tainted by bad owners and now face such an uphill battle to be adopted. I never had an issue raising my own, she was a handful, but you have to really mess up to ruin a Doberman. They are clearly not for everyone, I wish more people did their due diligence before committing to a dog that has such a negative stigma surrounding them already. Even as a Doberman lover, adopting an adult that has been started so badly is scary.
I liked your videos very much. I am having one 2 year male dog as of now and I m thinking of getting one female Doberman Pinscher but there is only me n my husband in the home and I think it needs to stay alone for 8 hours and also I want to know what could happen if I m unable to take her out for the walk daily??? Will that be dangerous?? I really love to have one but I m afraid she will turn very much ferocious as per our schdule n specially not taking out her for walk. Please suggest me as to whether I should get the one or get some other breed. Your opinion matters a lot. Please do reply as soon as possible.
I just found this video and I really want to say something...I own a male Doberman for two years now and I agree with most of your replies BUT number 3...can Dobermans live outside? Don’t say straight NO because my Doberman lives outside from our house in our big yards, gardens and stables and he really loves it I walk him for 2 hours every day I spend many hours with him every day around the house as long as you give your dog the love and exercise they need they’re the happiest dogs also my Doberman that lives free outside he has his dog house that is very warm and also now that is winter he has grown fur and thicker coat...❤️My Doberman is very very happy and trained very well!!!😊
Mary Askeli LoL hybrid dobie, that’s amazing. Must be like my hybrid chihuahua. Our winters get to -30 to -70 below. That’s real winter. Our Chi grows fur like a wolf for winter. Last I knew these dogs that have fur like the Dobie and Chi can morph into wolves when needed.
I grew up with two and the male one lived until 19 years of age. He went away a long time ago but as far as I remember him until his end he was pretty active when he was awake even that he spent most of his last couple of years sleeping. I am not surprised if there can be ones that lived up to 22.
You mentioned dobies aren't good outside. But is it possible? Or should i focus on training so he is welcomed in the home. Or maybe get a second dog for companionship.
Dobermans seem like great dogs. I'm grieving the loss of my dog. Down the line when I'm ready for a dog I'm considering a doberman. My dog was a german shepherd with doberman colors, so bad ass. Bless his heart. My only worry for dobermans is DCM. I wish there was a way to control it.
When your Dobermann (any dog) avoids you, doesn't want to be close to you, stops eating, does not want to play - then it is either ill, injured or needs its space. Personal practice: I provide my dogs a "safe space", where they can go - if they do not want to be bothered. If you have heard of "Crateing" a dog ... especially puppies - you place them there when you cannot directly supervise them... It serves as a Den, where a dog goes when it needs a Safe place, if they soil it, no problem. if they are afraid, no problem. In the crate - it doesn't have to worry about people rules...(my interference: if it wants whine, bark, poop or pee - its OK), after a while they figure it out. Their crate is = sanctuary, a 'little' Geneva, Switzerland If my dog(s) want a self-imposed "time-out", they can choose go to crate. When they feel ready to join the family, they can come back out. place it in a quiet, protected space, but where the dog can see family activity ... keep it unlocked so the dog can enter and leave without interference, unless you have a reason. Same: if you have kids - tell them, they are to never bother the dog, if it volunteers to go to the crate, instead of being 'poked, prodded - bothered'.
Hope I'm not pestering you with too many questions, but... I've been thinking of approaching a local Doberman-breeder kennels to take my research to the next stage. Being now December, should I wait until - say - spring? Is there a 'best time' of the year to consider taking on a Dobie (not that I'd necessarily be walking away with one on my first visit anyway!)...? Cheers
Never had a dog but i read a lot about dogs training and education im also good with dogs of my friends. would you recommend a Dobermann as a first dog? love them for since i was a kid!! Greetings from switzerland!
I loveeeeeeeee love love doberman and amstaff and i am thinking about getting an american doberman. It would be my very first dog. My parents never allowed one in the house up until now. I t would be also my job training the dog.I know lot of theoretical stuff about dog training and the doberman breed.. so it's not like "oh i saw this cool looking dog yesterday on instagram, now i want one to show off". Would it be good idea or absolut NO-GO? Any helpful tips?
I am trying to decide whether to get a Doberman or not. I am retired and a van lifer. I bought a large cargo van and have converted it to my traveling home. I live alone and would like to have a protection dog. My van has a "Hounditioner" in the back set on thermostat as well as heat on the thermostat. My plan is to hit a dog park every morning about 6 in whatever city or boondocking place I spend the night in. So I will have an hour of exercise, training and play every morning and also every evening. The question in my mind is whether this would be a good setup for a Doberman. Will he need more room. We will be together at least 20 hours a day. Do you think another breed would be better suited for this lifestyle?
Sure, a toy dog would do better probably... But it sounds like you are looking for other qualities the Doberman has like protection. I think it COULD work. But it could be tough to make sure he gets the exercise he needs to be happy. If he's in a van a lot of the time he'll probably need more exercise than an hour a day- depending on the individual dog. Plus Dobermans can be BIG. They love being close to their owners all the time so you'll have that going for you, but they take up a lot of space themselves too just because of their size. Definitely think this one through!
I just received my Doberman a few months ago, he is my first, and I’ve been noticing skin bumps with hair loss around those areas. At first I thought it’s stress caused from being in a new environment, but it’s been 3 months or more. What do you think?
Dobermans are prone to allergic reactions to a variety of things. Also, they're definitely known for skin lesions that are caused by fatty masses under the skin which are usually not harmful, although those typically don't have associated hair loss. My guess is he's sensitive to something and having an allergic reaction to it (something in his diet, a shampoo you're using, etc). I'm not a vet though and I think it's important you see one just to rule out the dangerous possible causes first.
I’ve taken him to the vet more than 6 times in these 3 months I’ve had him. On occasions, I’ve changed vets to see if there would be a different diagnosis, but all have only said that it’s nothing to worry about. The hair loss is that bad, it’s just the small area where the bumps grow (barely visible). I took him in 2 weeks ago for an allergy test to see what it is, the vet gave him a shot and pulls to give him. The itchy has decreased but not the bumps.
@@mff19911.... Due to several reasons, from breeding to environmental; skin, coat issues are a big complaint topic with nearly all Dobermann Pinschers owners sooner or later! Most reputable breeders, will recommend (and offer a least a sample of food to feed your dog for the 1st week or two). Do not think you ca feed your Dobermann generic kibble and not get coat , skin infections, "hot spots", infections around hair follicles...etc. The 'single coat' of this breed makes them susceptible problems which are hidden in other dog breeds. Do not feed your Dobermann supermarket, generic 'on sale' kibble! clean its water and food bowls often, keep them in a safe place; either inside or under close supervision... outside invites strays and wild life contamination. If you see another Dobermann owner with a dog who has a healthy coat - politely ask them what they are feeding him/her. Currently, there has been a lot of recalls, warnings being issued on dog foods being sourced from Asia: some dogs have even died from it. Being a purpose built breed - Dobermanns, some can be 'delicate' when it comes to diet, feed, clean water, skin and hair infections - it'll be your job keep an eye on them - for things other dogs seem to avoid.
At what age should i get my neutered female doberman a friend? I know 2 puppies don't do well together as they tend to grow closer to each other than the owner? She is now 8 months old...
I had my Dobie's ears cropped at 9 weeks, it only took about a month for her ears to be completely healed and standing. I think it just depends on the doctor's sugerical technique.
Took me till he was nine months old to get his ears to stand, was a ton of work. (But worth it) He had thick ears, so took quite a while for the cartilage to harden completely. Breath Right strips helped a ton at the end... Sticking them inside his ears for the last 2 months! Another great video! Laughed when you said you had to get off the roof before your lifespan might shorten lol.
@@DJ_Blaker Haha thanks... you should have seen my wife's face when she saw me getting out the ladder and camera equipment heading for the roof... lol.
Hi! I've watched you're channel for quite a while. I was brought up around short haired dogs. Staffordshire bull terriers all pedigree champion weight pullers. I now live on a boat and due to the risk of the dog falling in the waer I have decided against a staff'. I have considered many breeds and was wandering if you think a doberman woul suit a boat life. My boat is 72 ft by 8 foot. I believe I can give him the excersize and time/affection he/she requires. I do require a protective guard dog and this has been a large consideration. My question to you is...are dobermans ok around water and what are their swimming capabilities??
What do I do to stop my dog from crying while I am at work?? I just adobted him 2 months ago. Neighbor complaining when I'm gone, issue. Can u suggest some help. Gabriel is 7 yrs of old. I've had him for 3 months.
I am a fan of the docked tails. But our Dobes came that way. I wouldn't get it done if we happened to rescue a Doberman with a long tail though. Our last 2 dogs were a Rhodesian Ridgeback/lab mix a rescue. Buster was a great dog. When we decided to adopt a 2nd dog, I totally wanted a Doberman especially because of the docked tail. No TAIL damage...bahahaaa! Buster's tail was always wagging. It HURT getting slapped by it. We had to get rid of our coffee table because he would wipe everything off it. I've always loved Dobermans. My husband grew up with Dobes. We adopted The Grimace, a 6 year old rescue Doberman when Buster was 6 years old. They were BEST friends for 8 years. They both died at 14 years old a few months apart. The Grimace had docked ears and tail, but they did a horrible job. Her ears were sideways ears with tons of scar tissue. Dang I miss those pups. We adopted Penny Lane 6 weeks after Grimace died. She is a red Doberman, docked tail...WAY too short and has floppy ears. Shes 3 years old now and a wonderful dog. I'm hoping to adopt another adult dog (any large breed) in a year or so.
If both of the puppies parents are tested for dcm 1 and 2 and they came out negative will the puppy have zero chance of getting it or can it still get it?
I want to get a male Doberman puppy but i already have a chihuahua mutt that is 35lbs who loves other dogs but the issue is I have a 5lb chihuahua who hates every dog aside from his buddy. The little guy we rescued as he was abused previously and he hated my mutt but after weeks of socializing him with my mutt now they’re besties. Will having a huge dog be a bad idea due to having my little guy whom hates other dogs ?
Yes definitely. Dobermans tails are almost as long as their body and it's very prone to getting broken. Remember there are two kinds of tail docking to choose from. -Show dock is about 4" long. -Military dock is just a nub enough to cover the business hole.
My 7 and half month Doberman has motion sickness, the moment he’s inside the car he starts drooling, very anxious and finally pukes! so I find it difficult to travel , in fact we haven’t travelled at all since he has come home!!! Will this problem go away with time??? I
May I please recommend that some of the flashing effects you have in the beginning were a bit triggering. I enjoy your videos, could these effects not be added in the future?
Call Tony at West Coast Doberman. If you're interested in a very high quality breeder of European Dobermans I just got my first puppy and I've been to his place and know he is probably one of the best breeders in the country.
Smartest dog that my family ever had, my father would just have to tell Maia not to walk on wet grass, and she'd avoid it; and would stop right by the grass if she wanted to pee and look at him for permission, and would go once my father told her it was ok. The funny thing is that my father didn't actively train her to do that. She was so Gentle and smart I'll miss her for the rest of my life
I might be in the "dog house" after making this video guys.
@@JustinAEgan Good advice! Thank you!
Great video
I have a 2 year old female doberman rescue who doesn't know how to play with toys.
And what is the best way to train her?
OMG I've been watching your videos for 6 year's!!
Very helpfully. But I have a question, if you have 2 males do the fight alot
"honey, the crazy doberman guy is on the roof again"
Hahaha I'm pretty sure that's an exact quote from my neighbor
Doberman Planet For real though
Lol 😂🤣🤣
You forgot to tell folks you need to leave the bathroom door open...They love to come in and keep you company. Mine will actually try to shower on a hot day 😎
Hahaha... yeah that's a really good point! That should be the "pro-tip" of the day right there. Lol. Get ready for your new bathroom buddy!
My irish setter would do that if you were the only person in the house. If there was more than one person he would go back to his usual activities, the less said the better.
LOL, true unless you train them the bathroom is a no Doberman zone.
That's so great to hear Denver! Enjoy every moment with him! I totally agree... absolutely amazing dogs. So underrated.
Charish each other!!! My doberman died 3 weeks ago due to cancer at the age of 6..
jan doedel that’s so crazy, my boy same thing. At the age of 6, just 2 weeks after he turned 6 to be precise. The worst heartbreak imaginable
💞
I have a 6 month old little girl Dobie, love love her!! She's very headstrong, but we're taking it one lesson at a time
Deadcal IL i’ve raised dobies for 35 years and i love the stubborn ones, in my experience they’re a little smarter
I really appreciate the way you filmed today's episode XD thank you so much for all the great advice!!
It's just wonderful to see how much you love and understand your doberman Arlo... Every upload is on point with easy to understand information and pointers on how to get it right.. you are a great man John......thank you for all your great work. 👍😁
Hi
Thanks for this video!!!
You read my mind. It applies precisely to me. I’m exactly that person about whom you refer in your opening statement: “Many potential Doberman owners are afraid to get their first Doberman...”
Ever since watching, as a youngster in the 1980s, the TV programme ‘Magnum PI’ I’ve been completely enamoured with Dobermans.
Thanks again
D
As I am in the process of purchasing a Doberman puppy, I keep watching your videos and I really enjoy them.
I've been watching your channel for months. In two days ( Friday ) I pick my European dobie pup up .Thanks for all the info
1) once he sets in the car his energy level really lowers down and he sleeps most of the time ( never been with him for more than 4 hours though)
2) completely depends on how the stranger approaches (speed, do they have something in there hands, are they making a lot of noise... 2 many factors to answer...
3) my boy eats 6 cups a day
4) no way if anything your guests might have a personal guard when they go to the bathroom (makes sure he meets them well and knows that they are staying in the room that night give them some treats to give etc
All videos are very helpful! Love your channel and all your videos.
In my experiences with a working line the only problem is that if you are not a leader, your house becomes their house, I can’t say that Elsa is aggressive, but she is cold with strangers.
That's a great point, they definitely need clear direction from someone they see as the leader of the house. Or else they'll take that role.
Working lines hv a diff side to their temperament. I've been in discussion with two breeders of working line dobes here in Oz and they breed some hard dogs
Who has a Doberman? 🐾
Terrence not yet but soon............very soon
I have a Blue male and a Red (chocolate) female. Took them for shots last week. He's 75lbs. She's 90lbs.
He's my best bud. Rescue. Not cropped or docked... He's 100 super goof. Loves everything from babies to rabbits, cats,a turtle and all dogs. Serious. It's hilarious.
And hell yes he drools, especially if you're eating ice cream.
Terrence not me
I have a red female.
Enjoyed the different rooms kept me focus threw out
Haha thanks Leo! Drove the wife crazy filming that... but had to keep it interesting!

Great video. Although if I was listening to it without sound, I would have thought it was a commercial showing me all the places Mr. Clean can clean 🧼
So hyped to get a doberman
Another great video. You are an inspiration. I have been watching your videos for a few months now. I’m not sure if you have a video on washing the Dobermann or not. I love to see your products and technique. Prayerfully I will be getting my first Dobermann in the spring. Again great content and thank you for all you do to promote the breed and educate the owners.
the last one helped me a lot. thats the only thing i was worried about just having another dog. now im getting a doberman for sure
Time and Patience for a doberman and definitely love
Hello, I am new to this channel. My 11yr old daughter wants a Doberman bad!!! I have always been a little unsure about the breed but have been learning so much with your videos. My main concern and only at this point is I have 3 cats and they are 2yrs and under. I wonder how a Dobie would do when he/she got older with my kitties? Other than that I think it’s an excellent choice of a new family member. I have really enjoyed the videos. I have been sharing with my daughters and my mom.
Another great video! Love all the info especially for first timers!
I love them along with our great danes and Sheps we are adding our 2nd Doberman in December
I was worrying about it too but now cool
Thank you so much for all the information! I'm a new doberman owner, she is only 2 months of age and damn she is like a tornado! So I really enjoy your videos showing some exercises! Thank you!
Thanks so much Abraham! I'm really glad you're getting something from the videos! And congrats on your new puppy! I'm so happy for you. You don't even know it yet, but you have so many great times still to come.
I think i am training my dob. Actually the dob trains me.it changes the tone and tune of the barking by the circumstances. Only thing we have to understand. Great guard dog.
Lmao when he got on the roof🤣
Most of the aversion to this comes from people who have no clue of what they speak.
the three ppl who had read your whole comment deserve a metal dont u agree
Man tks for all your videos... Congratulations...
Great info! I definitely think having two dogs to keep each other entertained is a great thing!
And I'm so sorry to hear about your Dobie passing. At least she had a long, loving life thanks to you! 15 is a great long life for a Dobie!
Every Dobie I have met was absolutely a Velcro dog. Not towards everyone, but immediate family for sure and to some kind friends yes. If you are the primary owner, the alpha, then expect to be lovingly stuck with them.
My boy, Kruz has the military crop.
I think it will help you a lot.
great videos, and great info , on what i think is the best ever dog breed !
Thanks so much Lee! That means a lot. I absolutely agree with your assessment of the breed!
I have a golden but I've always wanted a Doberman haha love your vid, so informative n fun
I have a Doberman in Australia and the heat overwhelms her! She is the most intelligent dog ever and I love her to bits!
I understand why Mr Doberman docked the tail on these dogs, their tail is like a wooden cain and can hurt you when they are in wagging tail mode!
Good info - so funny with the different rooms thing 😄
Thanks Kat... so glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, first of all, Great info Videos! Tks!! I want to ask if you think this is a smelling breed. I mean does they have that “dog smell”?
My thought is to have one in the kitchen for when the time comes that we leave him during the day
Nice video! Just to let you Know that in Québec, Canada is no more legal to cropped the ears.
Any recomendations for Doberman training equivilant to HarrisonK9 for German Shepards?
Great video. Do you know of a breeder around the NY area?
I'm sorry, I don't.
You check on the AKC market place
Phenomenal video and very entertaining! Thanks I just hit the subscribe button
Much appreciated! Thank you so much. Welcome to the channel!
Doberman Planet >> Thank you!! Your videos are really good; keep them coming!
Thank you for your videos
So how do you get them to excerise in the winter?
Most easy dog I have ever owned. I am 75 and have tried several breeds.
I agree with all your points!! 👍
In Tallahassee Florida ear croping starts at $2000
I grew up with a dobermann outside. He was rarely allowed into the house. It's never been a problem, because we were everyday outside with him. Can be easily done in countries with mild weather. The point is not whether they should stay inside or not, but the life style of the owners.
Simple question, maybe it has asked before, would advice against of getting a Doberman to someone who has never owned dogs before?
Can you do a session on elderly getting a Doberman? Wife and I are 77yrs old and want one. Maybe an older Dobe? DonR
Is declawing good for Doberman puppy , thanks
Well thought out and informative video. And quite entertaining. Keep em coming.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks so much
My doberman is 5 years old and he's just as energetic as the day I got him. He is a nonstop atomic energy! I thought he mellow out by now.
Excellent video I’m a New Doberman Mom and he’s a Great Pup!! Got the ears done, and boy is it a convo starter!! ☺️
I wish there was a way to control it.
has your Doberman ever gave you a warning when he's in a bad mood
Their crate is = sanctuary, a 'little' Geneva, Switzerland
If my dog(s) want a self-imposed "time-out", they can choose go to crate.
Can you please tell me do they have intense smell? Love Dobermans! ❤
Question I just adopted my first doberman, can I still socialize him since he's more 50 50 as is known to try and bite. He is 3 years old
Hope I'm not pestering you with too many questions, but...
Depends on how much past experience you've had with dogs and how much time you can dedicate to training....
“I’m cooped up so let’s drive my wife crazy”......you and my husband would prolly get along way too well 😂
I just received my Doberman a few months ago, he is my first, and I’ve been noticing skin bumps with hair loss around those areas.
Check his diet feed your doobie a dog food with no grains
I love the Doberman. I have my handsome Tyson 10 years now. He is a true Gentile giant and looks like your Doby!!
Are there any problem after cropping the ears like can they cause any hearing damage
No, the common word is that it helps a Dobbie to listen better.
I am getting a 2.5 year old boy that has been trained 3 times he just has never had a consistent family, I live alone? What do I need to look out for?
I had my Dobie's ears cropped at 9 weeks, it only took about a month for her ears to be completely healed and standing. I think it just depends on the doctor's sugerical technique.
That's amazing! So were you done posting the ears after that month then?!
@@DobermanPlanet Yes. The doctor tape the ears down for the first 2 weeks to allow the ears to heal. Then 2 weeks of posting.
@@DJ_Blaker Haha thanks... you should have seen my wife's face when she saw me getting out the ladder and camera equipment heading for the roof... lol.
If the dog is 4 Month is it worth getting that year’s crop or it’s too late?
What about tail docking?
What do you mean triggering? Like... upsetting??

Hey I am from india...and i never had a dog as pet before but I always wanted to have one doberman....should I go for it
Call Tony at West Coast Doberman.
She was so Gentle and smart
I'll miss her for the rest of my life
