    I've wanted a doberman since i was a pre-teen but so far it hasn't been an option due to living space and financial limitations, but recently I decided to learn everything I possibly can about them, so that when I finally adopt one it'll be smoother sailing, so I think I'll be binge-watching your channel now. Thank you for making such informative videos!

      I'm also going to be adopting a female rust and brown Doberman from a relative who's unfortunately too old to take care of a high energy breed like the Doberman, I already have an almost 9 month old yellow labrador male puppy at home who is pretty much scared of any animal that is bigger than him. The Doberman grew up along with a female labrador who is slightly older than her so I know that she won't be unwelcoming of my labrador but I can't be sure if he will take to her quickly. Is there anything I can do to ensure that everything will be alright?

    Ahhhhhh. Thanks for the shout out. I agree with everything you said on this video. There’s one thing I might have added when you were talking about rescues Dobermans. Yes they certainly do need forever homes but I wouldn’t recommend a rescue to someone who has never had a Doberman. I believe rescues need Doberman savvy owner’s since you don’t always know what the Doberman has been through that could cause potential problems. With that being said, great video!

      Of course! You posted your original comment and it actually popped up on my cell phone while I was in the middle of recording this video, so I thought it was meant to be!! Great timing! Haha. Thanks for the great comment, I'm so happy to have you as a subscriber! Yeah, that's a good point, I wish I would have mentioned that too. That's the problem with doing these videos is I always come up with like 10 more things I wish I would have mentioned, clarified, or whatever after the fact. Oh well, I just add it to the list for future videos to touch on!

    I'm glad I found your channel. I never in my life ever even thought about getting a Doberman. As luck would have it I recently had a stray 1-year-old male Dobeman show up on my country property that was seriously malnourished. Apparently it had been abandoned somewhere. I thought about taking it to the SPCA, but I had no way of transporting it. So I have ended up keeping it. It has been an interesting experience. He was completely unmanageable when he first arrived, almost hysterical. He has calmed down a great deal, but just as you said in you video, he takes a lot of attention. He's very friendly and affectionate, and in spite of his unruliness, he has been surprisingly non-destructive. He chewed up a couple of socks when he first arrived, but that's about all. He is pretty much house trained at this point. The biggest challenge I have is his jealousy toward my other older female dog. He doesn't like me giving her attention and tries to block me when I approach her. That is improving with time. I live in the country and don't have a fenced yard. He has plenty of room to run and gets abundant exercise. So far I have not had any problem with him wandering off or getting into any trouble with the neighbors.
    I do have one problem that I don't know how to solve. I would like to get him neutered, but I cannot get him into my small pickup truck to transport him to a vet to get that done. I did get him checked out by a vet who does house calls out here in the country, though. If anyone has a suggestion as to how I can get him in my truck, I would be grateful.

      with time you will establish a bond and once that bond is formed he will follow you everywhere. Keep feeding, giving him plenty of attention and love and it will happen naturally. When it does, you will be asking how you can keep him from getting in the truck when you are in it.

    • @dooglitas

      @@dingdong7265 My comment was made 2 years ago. I have been doing as you say. I have had him almost 3 years now. He still has not gotten in my truck. He is very affectionate, but I would not say he follows me everywhere I go. As I mentioned, I live in the country. I don't have a fenced yard. He enjoys exploring the pastures around my house. There is a neighbor who has a male Lab. My dog has become good friends with that dog. He spends a lot of time during the day with his dog friend.

    Great video! Thank you so much for informing us all about this very special breed. People need to know more about Dobermann, before considering getting one. Here in Germany many people get a Dobermann and don't think about what it means owning one. So a lot of them get rehomed when they're about 1,5 years old. (Fun period where they know exactly what you want from them but decide to test you 24/7)
    I got my Dobie a year ago. He unfortunatley had a bit of a rough start. He was all over the place, couldn't stay alone or walk on a leash and so on. Very demanding dog.
    He is about 2,5 years old now and he changed completley. Even the former owner does not recognize him. And I am so happy about it. This "problem dog" just needed some firm guidance and a lot of love and something to do(!). He is still easy to excite but also incredibly willing to please. I'd never thought this breed would be "my thing". Turns out he is the best buddy I could ever ask for. Never have I seen a dog communicate so clear and smart.

    I’ve been looking for a Doberman for some time now and I’ve seen on the AKC that some breeders say they have health tested/screen tested their dobermans but what exactly have they screen tested / health tested for? And what should be considered good results? Would you consider doing a video on that. I’ve also noticed it’s less likely European breeders do these type of test.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  5 років тому +6

      That's true that many breeders will simply say "we health test our Dobermans" without getting in more detail. I think they are hoping that little or no follow up questions are asked and that's all the reassurance a potential new owner will need. But you make a great point that you need to know WHAT they tested and what the results are. Testing for vWD, DCM1, DCM2, PRA, Hypothyroidism and some others are important for sure. I haven't don't a video or article on this yet, but I think it's something very important that should be covered. I added it to my list of topics to do in the future!

    • @sarahkuilboer765
      @sarahkuilboer765 5 років тому

      From what I have seen, many reputable breeders show what tests have been done and results. If you go to their website and look at their dog's ( not litters or puppies) it will show you the testing done on the parents. Of course that is just in my experience, it may be different for you.

    We plan to purchase two Doberman puppies to raise together (not breed). Is it a problem to raise two siblings together? One breeder told us the pups would bond together and not be "as bonded" to my wife and I as owners. Is that true?

    • @spamtownhamilton6200
      @spamtownhamilton6200 Рік тому

      Sorry you never got a reply! For others with this same question coming along in the future- yes, adopting two puppies from the same litter can be really problematic. The issue is they bond to each other rather than to you, the owner. The term for this is "littermate syndrome", highly recommend googling for more information.
      I am not a dog "expert" but when I was a kid my family had first-hand experience with this when we adopted two labrador retriever puppies from the same litter. Sure enough - littermate syndrome. We loved them both to pieces but they were totally unmanageable (somehow frequently escaping and running away together to go on their grand adventures and that kind of thing) and we wound up having to rehome one of the puppies. It was heartbreaking.
      You'd think "how bad could it be? they're babies.." - but trust me and don't underestimate. When they won't listen to you it impacts all their training - potty training and everything else. It is like they would combine all of their brain power and produce chaos and make bad choices 😂 Adorable but not the kind of behavior you want from a pet I promise. Owning one puppy, even one that is responsive to you, will be enough of a handful by itself!

    Thanks

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  5 років тому +2

      They certainly can be!!! The best advice I can give for raising a European is to just plan our how you are going to train the typical behaviors (potty training, leash training, etc) and stick to your plan. Consistency and clear direction is absolutely crucial for these dogs. That's where a lot of new owners will mess up. They will change how they are training something because they're a bit inexperienced and still trying to find the best way. So just plan out how you are going to do these things ahead of time so you can stick with your approach and you should be good. Europeans are hard headed at times but with consistent training you should be totally fine. My first family Dobie was a European and he was so gentle and a great family dog!

    I'm a student and next year I'll be getting a doberman...so can my future dog will adapt to timing.? Will it cause some aggression issues for not having me most of the time around him.? Can you give me some tips to handle the dog if he/she can get aggressive or should I consider another dog if it is not a good idea to get a doberman with such busy schedule?

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  5 років тому

      Well I dont know how busy your schedule is. It can be tough with school and homework etc. If your dog gets aggressive then you've done something wrong. I'd focus on the question of whether or not I can make it work around my schedule and still give the dog what he or she needs as far as attention: www.dobermanplanet.com/how-long-can-you-leave-a-doberman-home-alone/

      @@DobermanPlanet Thank you... Sir my schedule is 5:00 am to 4:30 pm coz live in village in India so the distance from my house to my school is 30 km it takes 1:15 hours to cover..... I want to ask what are your suggestion on this schedule... Is it okay in the sense, is it manageable for the pup.?...
      (Sorry to bother you , but in my neighborhood no body is familiar with doberman or with its behavior..so I'm little curious to know about these things)

    Hi.. I'm your new subscribers. Gladly i found your channel. I have question, one kennel in my country clip Dobie Thumb. Did you know why? they say useless. Are European / American do that?

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  5 років тому

      Do you mean the dog's declaw? In America anyway, that's completely normal. Most dogs have that done. It's useless and can easily get caught on things and broken leading to lots of pain and vet bills later on.

      If they cost 300 dollars, be concerned, sounds like a bad breeder. Expensive pups mean that more effort was put into breeding.

    Yes dobermans as any dog shouldn’t stay or live outside but I raised my Doberman in the snow and he is totally a “snowberman” when we traveled to California he had a hard time with the heat and was happy to be back in the snow for play time. They are very adaptable to the environment you live in.

    The Marines would argue point 9. The doberman's slowness to bond to a new handler is why the Marines decided against using them for military and police work.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  5 років тому +1

      That's a great point actually... I assume you're referring to my statement where I said I could argue they might even bond tighter to their new owner after knowing a life without the love and attention you can give.... I think it would depend on the individual Dobie but you make a solid point. They do tend to bond tightly to one person in life.

      Doberman Planet you know with how smart and emotional these dogs are with the comment the guy made, it might be because they don't want to open up love to another human maybe? I know these dogs love the whole family but tend to pick a favorite human so they maybe a little rebellious and slow to open to another person specially if they were well taken care of before switching handlers. Now with your comment it could very well be if they were not so well taken care of and abused then you show the love they didn't get I can see where your coming from. Lots of other rescue dogs do that.

    • @DobermanPlanet

      That would be pretty cheap where I live (California) if it's from a reputable breeder. But I suppose it depends ether where you're at. Everything is expensive in California it seems.

    My neighbor has one and never pays attention to it. They have other homes and leave it here to “guard”. The other day it hailed and the dog was outside. Cries everyday for the last 9 or so years. I’ve come to hate this breed of dog unfortunately. Bad experience of having to sleep in living room because of the crying.
