Humans live longer when they have other humans. It makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. If there's a pack to defend and feed and socialize with, there are important reasons for the organism to be alive. GREAT research, John -- you've really hit on something, here. Maybe you should share this with a publication and/or canine scientists. Because wow!

We got our second Dobe back in July. She had a VERY old grandma. She was either 16 or 17 when she passed, but just as amazing to us was that she had her last litter (which included our girl's mother) at the age of 13! Her family is European stock, non-show type.

Thanks for your efforts to identify some of the factors that allow these amazing dobermans to live to 14 years of age or more. For my two dobermans, the first lived to 13.5 years and the second to just shy of 10 years. We always felt blessed that they were a part of our lives for so long when we were well aware of so many doberman owners who lost their family member between the ages of 5 to 7 years. For those with such short longevity, it didn't seem to matter their genetic breeding, their pre-screening, their diets, their exercise routines, or anything that has been pinned down. To loose your doberman at an early age, shortly after it has reached its' maturity would be heart breaking and I know that you have experienced that. Maybe a second survey would be valuable to evaluate the short lived dobermans to identify and reduce this heartbreaking scenario.

I definitely think there’s something to having another dog adding to longevity. Our dog had gotten pretty sedentary by age 7. Then, we got a puppy. Now at 9, he’s always in the yard wrestling or patrolling with our younger Doberman.

We have had 1 or 2 dobes for over the last 40 years. I am a firm believer in mixing table scraps with the kibble. Also we decided to fence in our back yard. And this has made having a Doberman absolutely amazing. It’s hard to believe how much they want to be with you in an outside environment without having to be on a leash. They can do their own thing while you do what ever. My two love being outside when we are out there too.

Thanks for yet another educational vid on Dobe's health.
I have long suspected a mix of kibble and human food (or raw food fullstop) may be healthier than kibble alone.

Earlier I wrote that my dobie's meals consist of kibble, fruit vegetable, and "cheese juice", hahaha... Sorry, english is not my native language, and sometimes I make up words. Cheese juice is actually WHEY, a liquid which is a byproduct of manufacturing cheese. It is very healty, even prescribed by doctors for patients with liver problems and we all know that for dogs liver is an organ with issues. My dobies get 1 liter of natural whey per day, one half goes in the food (and they get to eat it only when kibble gets soft) and the other half they drink (with great pleasure).
Yes, I agree that kibble is crap but what isn't these days... When I had only a couple of dogs I used to cook poultry, beef and herrings for them. But farm meat is full of antibiotics... and fish - oceans and seas are becoming reservoirs of God knows which poisons. Maybe longevity nowdays is actualy a pure luck not to eat something contaminated.

I know nothing of my Doberman's past. He is an abandoned dog that showed up at my house in the country 5 years ago. I have another mixed-breed dog, which is 17 years old despite having a couple of health issues. My property has no fenced yard. My Doberman gets no formal exercise, but he is very active and runs all the time. I have about 4 acres of land, and there is a large pasture next door. My dog makes regular patrols along the borders of my property. He runs a great deal, weather permitting. He also chases various critters, like deer, coyotes, squirrels, and rabbits. One of my neighbors has a donkey, and my Doberman has a reserved friendship with the donkey. My Doberman has had several injuries, which are a result of these living conditions, but he seems very happy. Other than the injuries, so far his health has been good.

great video. my comment on the "dog breeder" question (about 11:30-ff), is yeah, 31% were adopted (ie, no knowledge of breeder), but look at the % of dogs where the breeder is known. if you take the small, w/extensive experience & add it to the long-time/good rep breeders, that totals 42.7%. not saying don't adopt (afterall, i'm in this category), but knowledge of the breeder seems to have a bigger input towards longevity. just something to think about.
BTW, i like your ollie commercial where you show the dobe "helping" with the food prep. 😁

I give my dog at least one doggie daycare day each week, and we train multiple days each week for public access... she is in training for becoming my Service Dog. LOTS of mental stimulation.
I want my dog everywhere I go... and I feed raw bits mixed with breakfast kibbles...I chose Blue Buffalo kibble, because it has decent ingredients and is balanced in nutrition. (and you can find it in most stores)

Interesting study! I think I would have also asked for the owners' yearly income, or the yearly income when they had their doberman. Might be that more people feed kibble because it's affordable vs raw, and not necessarily that kibble helps with a longer life.
The same can be said about having multiple dogs. They're more expensive to care for, at least properly.

To correct for skewing, check the average age of the dogs that fit a specific response. So for example, if 90% of dogs that lived to be over 14 lived with other dogs, but their average age is close to the average age of all dogs in the survey, that indicates it doesn’t have much of an effect. Get in contact with a data scientist (or just like, anyone trained in stats, or train yourself in stats) to help you go over these results!!!

When most was pet/non show, I figured that was the main reason why they lived so long. As for the raw food. Unless if you also asked something along the lines of "could you afford to feed a raw food diet?" That's probably why it was so low. I think now a days especially people are realizing the importance of fresh foods even for their animals. However the way things are right now it's hard to eat healthy as is. So most people especially if they have multiple animals probably can't manage the extra cost of raw or homecooked even if they would love to be able to do it. I wish I could feed raw, but with 3 dogs and a cat I just can't swing it yet.

I have an experience you may find interesting. On 24th of March 2008. my dear Aeryn Sun gave birth to a litter of 10 puppies and I kept them all. Here is how much their lifespan was: Zaan - 6,1 years; Talin - 9,4; Stark - 10,11; Jool - 11,8; Braka - 12,5; Moya - 12,9; Scorpy - 14,2; Nemo - 14,6; D'Argo - 15,7... The last one, Chiana, is still with us, now she is 16 years and 8 months (she is just recovering from teeth operation, had to pull 4 of them out).
Their mother Aeryn died when she was approximatly 16 (we do not know when she was born exactly).
Their meals were mostly quality kibble mixed with fresh fruit and vegetable with lots of cheese juice. They lived indoors, slept in beds with freedom to go to the yard and garden almost whenever they wanted. Some of them were within the standard, some were smaller. D'Argo and Chiana (who lived the longest) were about 55cm tall. Stark and Scorpius were the tallest at some 70cm+, but as you can see their lifespan was shorter.
Pitty you didn't put height and weight in your questioneer. I have spent 50 years with the dobies ( I am not a breeder, just someone who is in love with them) and I think that they last longer if they are smaller...
    Best regards 😇

    • @webersteve1547
      @webersteve1547 Місяць тому

@DobermanPlanet I think the questions were a good approach, I'm just not sure how statistically relevant the answers were. And there are some misconceptions too, for example about nutrition. Let us say you asked for the nutrition the owners feed, but what does this tell us about what they fed in the past? The interrogation group (the dogs) had all survived very long time, so it would be.mucg more interesting what they did in the past. I also suggest to repeat this questionary for all other age groups starting from 6 or 7 as this would probably give much more insight of possible causes of the most common diseases. Also please don't forget indirect causes. For example I had to let go my Doberman at the age of 11 many years ago for severe artrose, which was, in my opinion, due to suboptimal nutrition (I didn't know it better). Also, a turned stomach can be a cause of premature death. This said, I absolutely value your effort, everything we can learn to make the life of our companions better is worth the effort. Thank you

4 months is not too old. They are a blank slate, ready to learn and past the weaned puppy stage. In a matter of weeks they will bond and are willing to learn basic commands. I’ve been feeding Raw to my dogs and cats for a little over 20 years now. I have never had a Doberman so I can’t speak to them. But I had one dog lived to 17 years. She was a 25 pound mutt, another dog lived 16 years she was a springer lab cross, and she even had hip dysplasia, had a cat that made it to 18 years old. So I do not think that a raw diet is a cure all or a guarantee. But I do think it gives your dog the best chance of a long healthy life. Also, I think kibble from even 20 years ago compared to kibble now Are two different things. I pretty much guarantee the kibble now is worse. With all the so-called fancy brands on the market now they’re supposedly high-end and great, they’re still kibble. Which is still crap. Highly processed and just absolutely terrible. Big food and big Pharma is not doing us or animals any favors.

You better off feeding real food than powdered or liquid supplements. Don’t give your dog fish oil give them sardines. Don’t give them a multivitamin. Give them a raw egg. Don’t give them a pro and prebiotic give them some green tripe. instead of giving glucosamine, etc., give a chicken foot.

The problem with this is that you don't provide comparison to those that don't live long. There is ZERO scientific value here.
