Woodturning a Bowl, Pinecones with Epoxy Resin

  • Full on resin work this week! I cast a bowl blank using resin and pine firewood…and a pinecone or two, and turn a really nice looking bowl with a little extra going on inside...
    The resin I used is Art’N Glow. Here’s a link if you’re interested: artnglow.refr.cc/rodhumphrey

please be careful with the epoxy resin, most resin's become toxic after being mixed and remain that way for three days, until full cure.i'm a boat builder in northern michigan, and i have burnt my lungs by working it to soon.remain well so you can keep making these beautiful projects

Dan, I really appreciate that, and I hope everyone reads your comment. I don't stress it in my videos but I should...Wearing an actual respirator is mandatory for health reasons when working with resin, and good airflow. Thank you very much!

Is this true? Damn. Yoi betyer be carefully working with it on the lathe then. Shit. I do alot of epoxt work too. Is it the one specific kind of epoxy? The boat epoxy? I know that one has fiberglass.....

@@FatNebraskaMom it's called systemic toxicity, liquid epoxy on your skin causes dermal contact. West System has a book on precautions

@@dandeforest9439 dude I will totally take it to heart. But I do know that there are different types of epoxy. Do u happen to know if they all cause this problem, or just the boat epoxy?

@@FatNebraskaMom the only epoxy i use is West System, i got my information from there saftey book.I would think that any other company by law , would have to publish there own info. you should be able to find it on there web site.I know epoxies affect many people in different ways.some work with it for years without any effect, others can't go anywhere near it.systemic toxicity is from being assorbed by your body, and build up over weeks ,months or years. but some may never be affected.hydrocarbon's can have the same effect.i'm not a doctor ,this is just what i have read and been told by my doctor.I have had only the one bad experence, but that was my own fault,by working it before full cure, and not enough ventelation .you should be able to look this up on web md or google, maybe even utube.

      I guess he s a true dreamer R. Humphrey.
I like his videos cose most of lathe turners ate just showing quick videos without any commment. No info.. No fail... No real advice.
Sounds a littl bit inhuman sometimes just looking for their ego and... Money back. Some Us or canadian or Brit give with humility lot of explanations. That s pleasant.
Olivier Gomis f. Ex the french turner should give more explanations. He s really good but too much silent.

    • @ScheelesGreen
      @ScheelesGreen 5 років тому +1

R Humphrey The wood probably swelled with the heat of the resin, since as you said it was rotten. Then when you exposed it to a sharp cold over night, the wood cells shrank back and pulled away from the resin.

I wasn’t having the best night, so just sitting down and watching and listening to this really helped me out. The bowl turned out absolutely beautiful. I think if it was all pinecones it would have been a better better on the aesthetic part. However, I think the wood really made it organic and gave it another element that really added to the bowl. mendaliv the epoxy stabilizes them so it should be plenty stable over time. Another good thing about the epoxy is that it doesn’t really move at all over time so you have a nice strong bowl.

Thank you! Yes, FinalDestination pegged it, it should last a very long time with no issues.

I use to do this stuff in Junior high! I made a wooden bowl, cutting board and a few small items that I made. I loved it!! I wish I had the equipment for this. Thank you for sharing a great memory

I think I'm going to subscribe to this channel, I love to watch these but don't like the theatrics that some of these channels have. It's a wood/resin project not a theatrical drama. Great work by the way 👍

Another stunner Rod. I'd be grateful if you would stop showing the pics sent in by other turners -- they make me feel so inadequate:-).

This is beautiful! I love the side with the pine cones popping out of the blue resin the most. It almost looks like the bowl has feathers!

Beautiful piece of art! I'm a word Carver myself, but after watching your work, I am deeply impressed. I work with epoxy resin at my job seaming granite together for customer's countertops, and I never thought of making art with epoxy resin. Mind blown!

For a basic bowl this is exceptionally nice due to the way you mixed the different materials.
I get tired of the same things that are often done but lately I have seen remarkable results.
