Precisely right, making sure to clarify that it has a demographic intent rather than a genre intent. So many people think, for instance, that shonen means that a show is about fighting when it basically means teen boy. Where as seinen means young man, shojo means teen girl and josei means young woman. Any of these can have any genre under the sun in them, hypothetically. What distinguishes them is how each will handle the genre in question. Seinen is likely the most popular because it can tell the most honest and universal stories. It's not held back by the restraints of catering to a younger audience that shonen or shojo must respect. And things targeted at men will always be more popular because men's world is external whereas women's world tends to be interneal in a storytelling sense. Women go out, men generally don't come in. (Again, MASSIVE generalization there. I'm a woman and I can find shonen / seinen easier to disgest than I find shojo / josei if I'm in the wrong mood.) There is also the end result of the above meaning that more shonen and seinen tend to get produced, which could be--in part--another aspect of its wider popularity.
