The world has lost the One of the Last and still very, very few of (t)his kind! The sad news today, on this Halloween day, and evening, was, in spite of being aware of Sean Connery's age, quite a shock to me, well, at least a bit so, but still, especially when taking into account his celebrity status and all that. Interestingly the first thing that came into my mind after seeing the news was some other news only a couple of weeks ago, related to Sean Connery's longtime home, a Belle Epoque villa in Southern France, near Nice, which was obviously on sale. Magnificent place indeed, according to photos! As was splendid Sean Connery's above speach in long gone year of 1996! Rest in peace, man!

It's great to see Nicolas Cage up there as one of the presenters of the Cecil B. Demille award to Sean Connery. Cage was one half of the presenters who had given him his Best Supporting Actor Oscar back in 1988 for his role as Jimmy Malone in "The Untouchables". Later, both Connery and Cage would co-star in "The Rock."

I believe that Sean Connery's retirement from film acting in 2003 was precipitated by his disenchantment with the state of filmmaking, his negative experience during the production of The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was a critical and commercial disappointment and his age. He obviously had a favorable experience making The Rock with Nicholas Cage and he enjoyed making Rising Sun with Michael Crichton. He also has expressed his fondness for Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford, with whom he made Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade; accordingly, when he was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Indy's Father in the most recent film in 2008, one may assume that it wasn't attributable to them but rather his fondness for retirement.

Two of cinema's greatest leading men, Sir Sean Connery and Cary Grant, never took themselves seriously as actors as exemplified by 007's quote here that he's forgotten several of his films and several he's "trying to forget".
And on the other hand are wannabes like De Niro, Pacino and DiCaprio who think they should be nominated for an Oscar for even their most ludicrous acts.
    That tells a lot.

Was he a bodybuilder in his youth ? He mentioned in a Barbara Walters interview that he came to London for Mr Universe. He auditioned for a job in the chorus of South Pacific in London and then went on tour for a year. Read Ibsen and Shakespeare in the library of every city he was in and became an actor. Did he sue the Broccoli’s or did he just quit when they wouldn’t pay him adequately after the third one ? Has anybody heard him sing ? He could have played the Omar Sharif role in funny girl.

It amazes me that Sean Connery studiously avoids making virtually any reference to his involvement with the James Bond film series that essentially established his career and his stardom; he never expresses any appreciation to the Bond producers Broccoli and Saltzman-there must still be tremendous antagonism on his part for not compensating him adequately. Nevertheless, without Bond, he wouldn't have made Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, Lumet's The Hill, Hitchcock's Marnie, or many others.

Actually, he appeared in four Lumet films: The Hill, The Offence, Murder On The Orient Express and Family Business.
