I love hearing Van Morrison as much today as way back then. My all-time favorite is "Moondance."
Yes, I'm older (same age as Ali's dad).

Into the Mystic! I keep forgetting I’m an old lady so when young people do not know that there is awesome music out there it’s good young people like you react to it. I’m lucky enough to have listened to the music of the day from the 50’s to today on the radio, on my phonograph, etc. I was also bathed in the music of the 40’s-especially WWWIi. My mom taught me the fox trot and I taught her the twist. Keep listening and sharing❤️

Oh man y'all have me going hard down memory lane. I sang Brown Eyed Girl to my first baby girl as her bedtime lullaby for so many years. My oldest bro was ten years older than me and he had Van on Vinyl. He was mostly a hard rock guy but Van was a certain mood, ya know?

This is 80s Van Morrison which feels a bit more mom and pop than his legendary earlier stuff. I wouldn’t even say this is one of the best songs on its album - Poetic Champions Compose - which is one of Van’s strongest albums from the 80s. Most of the other songs on that album are better. For his most famous songs check out Into the Mystic, Brown Eyed Girl, Tupelo Honey, Crazy love, Sweet Thing, Jackie Wilson Says, Wild Night etc

Check out "Into The Mystic"! "Have I told you Lately" (that I love you.) was my wife and I's first dance song at our wedding. Van Morrison's body of work is so extensive. He's such a poet who's also a good musician. He's gone through many phases in his life and work such as getting more in touch with his religion phase and that comes out in his music on some albums. If you can catch some of his early 70's live performances, you'll be blown away. I don't know if I've heard him sing the same song the same way, twice.

Tupelo Honey is my favorite Van Morrison song, but he has so many great songs. His catalog is huge. Can't be too many artists with his wide range. Van is the Man.
He has lots of bangers. Check out the Best of album. He also has many spiritual songs, his album Sense of Wonder has several and is my favorite Van album.

Thanks Ali for this great selection. I'm 72 and Van Morrison is one of my favorite singers. His voice is so emotive and his musical composing are superb. If you haven't you need to listen to his song "Tupelo Honey" one of the best love songs ever. But he had so many other beatiful songs to hear. It's a shame that music like this seems to be dead but people like you show that it's still relevant and alive.

"Many hours more to be spent".....you don't know the half of it. My favorite musical performer of all time. A voice for the ages...40+ albums...closing in on 60 years of performing. You MUST try "Tupelo Honey" my favorite song by him. Also - Moondance, Have I Told You Lately, And The Healing Has Begun, Carrying a Torch, Got To Go Back, St. Dominic's Preview, Jackie Wilson Said, Into The Mystic, Got To Go Back, Cypress Avenue, Wild Night, Celtic Ray, Beautiful Vision, Domino, The Healing Game, Real Real Gone, Gloria - that's a good start! He does rock, jazz, funk, soul, R&B, folk, a little bit of everything.

Now you've gone and done it. Van Morrison. There's no going back. Just wait until you hear the WHOLE ALBUM called "Moondance" (1970)👍😁
And then "His Band and the Street Choir" (also 1970). The whole album. It may as well be Moondance, Part 2.
And then "Tupelo Honey" (1971). The whole album.
And then his debut album, "Astral Weeks" (1968). The whole album.
And then Saint Dominic's Preview (1972). The whole album.
THEN you will be properly prepared for the rest of Van Morrison's music 😁

  • @mrkelso
    @mrkelso 7 місяців тому +3

No, he's not a crooner, that's not his typical sound. Van doesn't have a typical sound. He's too creative to stick in a hole. If you like the classy angle, do Moondance, that's sooo classy. Watch the "Last Waltz - Van Morrison - Caravan" video to watch him live. And bro, Into The Mystic is spiritual and lets your soul think. The guy is a legend, you done been steered good. Have fun.

Van Morrison was a staple of the San Francisco music scene in the 70s. I saw him several times including at Filmore West, Winterland and The Lion's Share. The latter is a small club in San Anselmo, just north of the city, with a real intimate setting. I also bought most of his early records and still have the vinyl LPs. He never disappointed and always had first rate musicians playing with him.

I grew up in the UK and remember Van Morrison from the group Them. By the time I moved to San Francisco in 1967 he was a solo artist. The last time I saw him live was at the Band's farewell concert at Winterland. Luckily, I can relive that experience through The Last Waltz movie, with a clip of his performance available on UA-cam.

You are trying too hard to categorize, Van. After the kids are in bed, turn down the lights, maybe light some candles, and put a Van Morrison Album on. He will take you on a spiritual journey, and you never end up where you started from. He started out more as a rock performer but then developed his own style which combines the blues and jazz, with skiffle, Irish poetry, folk, and country. He can't be categorized.
My favorites are In the Garden, When the Leaves Come Falling Down, Hymns to the Silence, The Philosopher's Stone, Every Time I See a River, and about 50 others.

You should check out Tom waits sometime. He is an artist unlike any other. You either will love him or hate him. His voice is like gravel wrapped in velvet. Amazing lyrics. I recommend “picture in a frame” or “all the world is green” for lyrics. “The Train Song” sounds like he is quite literally bleeding out his lyrics, truly amazing. If you just wanna listen to something crazy them I recommend “Underground” or “Raised right men”.

You have Jim Morrison, frontman for The Doors, confused with Irish Blues/Jazz/and R&B artist. they did perform together in 1967 in Los Angles' "Whisky-A-Go-Go on the Sunset strip. But they are two different people. Both were, and in Van's case Huge stars. "Brown Eyed Girl." "Into the mystic," "Caravan," Moondance" and many other great songs.

This is not like Van is…. In fact, it’s really like Van isn’t….. atypical.
Van is not only a singer/songwriter writer. He produces all his albums, plays piano, guitar, sax and blues harp. Awesome live, very prone to jamming with his band. Watch some stuff from the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Concerts.
Van is still releasing albums… huge rabbit hole to go down there. If you dig deeper he’ll blow you away.
Please don’t put Brown Eyed Girl on the list. It’s a fairly basic tune and doesn’t really showcase the man’s talent. Written very early in his career.

Most of what I see mentioned here ...Brown Eyed Girl, Tupelo Honey, Someone Like you etc are Van's more commercial "hits" ... He is, in my opinion, one of the great musical artists of my lifetime ( I am 80 years old) His first really important album, Astral Weeks , is a masterwork and not "wedding music" ...he wrote and performed it in his 20s. It is also important to know that he plays the piano, sax, and brilliant harmonica... writes, arranges and composes his music... and yes, is a pretty terrific vocalist. I think it's so fantastic that you have highlighted this amazing ( still alive and performing) artist... but would say, you have kind of missed the point by focusing on his most commercial material... I remember remember being blown away the first time I heard "Have I told you lately that I love you" in the grocery store.!... Van Morrison's music wasn't taken so lightly when any of it was first released! There is a large body of work ...hoping you have encouraged more of your generation to check it out... it's worth your time !!

Amen Jane!! Learned to jitterbug from my parents (dancing in the kitchen!)! Danced in junior high school cafeteria with two girls at once to Bobby Vee! Same cafeteria, where moms volunteered on the serving line and pounded their serving spoons to the beat of Glad All Over!! Great times with great music!

Van Morrison is one of my all-time favorite musicians, singers. He is incredible. So much soul. He can play all the instruments on the stage. He continues to put out music, and I continue to buy it. I got to see him once when I was in 7th grade (I am now 64). Into the Mystic and Tupelo Honey are two you should listen to; for something a little faster, try Blue Money, Domino, or Wild Night. He can do it all.

new subscriber, just found your channel recently. I'm loving your reactions. At 1:19 you said "we have lost something." What has been lost is music education in the elementary schools in the USA. I'm in my 60's and remember going to music class at least two or three times a week from at least second grade because I remember singing songs from Mary Poppins when I was in second grade. We also learned to read music, and I started learning to play clarinet in fourth grade. We had band every day for about an hour starting when I was in the sixth grade. The generation that were making music in the 60's and early 70's had even more music opportunities and influence than my age. Take a listen sometime to the big band dance music of the WWII era as well as Jazz for the influences. I don't know if music in the US will ever turn around, glad you enjoy 'our' music.

You really need to listen to Into the Mystic. I've danced to this with my son since before he could walk. We still dance to it, and he's 22 and 6'5. ❤❤❤

Dude, Alley is making a not so subtle statement with this pick. Van Morrison is nicknamed the voice for good reason. Check out Gloria for something more rocking. Love your reactions and interactions.
