That’s a really crappy and disrespectful response, GE.
There are XWFE hack videos here that show you how to get around that! They should be ashamed for trying to force us into a monopoly.
It is obvious from the numerous posts regarding this matter that GE has a serious problem with their XWFE water filter. If GE is selling filters to Lowes, etc. to be resold then GE should stand by their product. My feeling is some accountant figured out a way to make a ton of money by selling through vendors and then not supporting their own product! I hope the CEO got a big enough year end bonus off this scam to retire early.
I will never buy another GE appliance again.

Obviously, with so many people having problems with the XWFE filter, GE is at fault here. My fridge is 6 months old, and this was my first filter replacement. I purchased the replacement filter first from Amazon which stated that it was a GE Certified Filter, and got the error message when installing. I returned the filter to Amazon and ordered the filter from GE directly, waited weeks for the part, installed it and got the error message, so I am sticking my old filter back in and will return my fridge which is still under warranty

My problem here is, the ice maker isn’t working at all, I replaced the filter, bought it on Amazon, and the water is coming perfectly, but no ice at all. The worst thing is, that isn’t my own house, and my landlord never call the people to fix it. 🥹

Make sure you call GE and get a free Filter Bypass Plug. If your water is fine, just use the plug. If you want filtered water have the Bypass Plug on hand for when the filters give you an error message. I've ordered a plug after our filter exploded, water leaked through the fridge and damaged our hardwood floor. Hopefully the Bypass Plug will be tougher than their filters.
I got the bypass plug directly from GE. The filter panel shows "bP" but the water still doesn't work. There is no "reset" button anywhere. I wish I'd bought a samsung.
Curious, we purchased a GE Profile and it came with the plug. We've had the unit for 13 years now, and the front panel water filter light just lit recently. I purchased a filter, but can't seem to loosen the bypass plug! The bypass plug has been working just fine for 13 years, now I am thinking it's better to return the filter.
If the water is fine, isn't it easier to just use your faucet? lol
$100 a year for filters?! Just admit you did this to sell over priced water filters because the "non-GE" filter were eating up profits. I will never buy another GE appliance again if I have to purchase only GE filters, and I will make sure no one I know ever buys GE again.

Is the. Xwf same as xwfe
@@visa1960 It is the same filter but you must use the xwfe one if that's what your fridge needs. GE just slaps a RFID on the xwfe filter so your fridge will refuse to use a generic xwf filter. GE won't admit it (see the reply above) but they are doing this to force you to buy two of their ridiculously overpriced filters every year for $100.
@@geappliances I see you give the same response to everyone that talks about the price. Just admit it, this is a way for GE to squeeze money out of their customers. If generic filters can be sold for $10 each, so can the GE filters.

Thanks for this! I have a GNE25 fridge and cannot get the arrows to line up when installing the XWFE filter (it's about 1/3 inch off). Water flowed from the dispenser for a while and then stopped. Do you -- or someone else -- have any insight into what might be happening?
In 2022, there was a minor change in the design of the XWFE. The design at the top of this filter now has slots where the previous XWFE did not. It does not change how it fits into the filter head (port), though it may take a little more force to put it in and the arrows may not line up completely.

@@TiaDurrant Hey Tia! I learned that these filters expire, and the fridge knows that. Previously I had purchased 2 filters at the same time in order to be ready for the next replacement, but it "expired" while sitting unopened on my shelf so the fridge wouldn't take it, and because the old one had also expired it would not take it back in. Basically just have to order them as they expire, and DO NOT remove the bad one until the new one shows up.

Per the article that we provided prior, you may see ERR on your display if there is no filter in place, you have a bad or damaged filter, the wrong filter is installed, or you're trying to use a non-GE filter.
You may want to try replacing your filter to see if this helps. If you continue to have issues, you can try resetting the internal electronics by disconnecting power for about 30 seconds then restoring it. If this still doesn't help, service may be needed. my filter didn't have a chip on it. so i took the chip off my old filter and now it worked
The results of AHAM's testing show that counterfeit filters often have the following traits:
Use of misleading and fraudulent labels that violate trademarks.
Make deceptive or faulty claims.
Potentially add harmful contaminants to the water.
Falsely claim to meet NSF/ANSI Drinking Water Treatment standards.
Adding RFID to a more affordable filter just to be able to charge more and force the consumers to use ge filters only... has got to be the most anti consumer thing ever… note to self to never buy ge products ever again…

Yep, another complaint about this crazy filter system. New fridge, GE sent me a bypass plug, I had to pay shipping. Now I'm getting Err and, of course, no ice or water. Customer service is a waste of time. Good job GE, I'd be proud of your service and product.

Our GE refrigerator was part of our builder package in our new home. We have the same issue with the ERR message when trying to replace the filter. Only works with the old one, we bought ours from Amazon, supposed to be genuine. Only a year old, so annoyed.

I've flushed the system, I did over 2 gallons. Thought it was fine. This was done last week. I just noticed my cup had black specks in it. We've used well over 3 gallons. There's still stuff in it. It isn't from the ice either, because I put just water in it.

I am installing a new filter and I have everything lined up and inserted properly and when I try to use the water dispenser it says error. I’ve tried reinstalling it several times and tried resetting the filter status to no avail. It really shouldn’t be this complicated. And yes I’ve replaced filters a million times so I know what I’m doing and yes I purchased it from a reputable source so it’s not some knock-off.

@@dannypetrisor2999 it was a defective filter. I returned it and bought another one and it worked. Someone who worked at Lowe’s said it is fairly common they’re defective. 🤷🏻♀️
Same issue, installed a GENUINE, brand new GE filter and got the ERROR message! THIS is ridiculous! This will be the last GE appliance we will ever buy because apparently everyone on here is having the same issue. My refrigerator is under warranty AND I bought an extended warranty. So, the old filter is back on and we are NOT happy. I paid a LOT of money for the genuine filters only to play this game. GE should be ashamed of themselves. I am part of your consumer panel so I will make SURE to mention this issue and make other potential GE buyers aware that you can spend thousands for a GE refrigerator only to have issues replacing a stupid filter!

On my unit, I found that to remove the old cartridge on my side by side I had to turn it to the left until it stopped and then one HARD turn to the left for it to release. I hope this helps!

We purchased a GE filter from Lowe's where we purchased the fridge We have followed all instructions. Our filter will not reset. Still shows ERR! This is extremely frustrating for such an expensive purchase.

Ordering a bypass plan but never another GE Appliance 😢
I have the same exact problem. I have bought 4 (expensive) filters from two different places, they don't want to take them back if the packaging is open. When I put the new filters on the water stops working, then when I put the old filter back on the water works fine. Why are there so many people having the same problem? I stopped using the water from the fridge because I was getting sick. I now buy bottles water and can't use the ice maker either. I am hearing that the market may have been flooded with fake filters. What is GE doing about it? Do we need to organize a lawsuit? Sign me up!

Never again will I purchase another GE product. I had a GE washer and dryer in my cart and went to add replacement water filters to my cart. This water filter with the RFID chip was a total DB move! So now we can only buy GE XWFE filters at more twice the price of the the XWF and generics?! Same dang filter, and you just added the chip. Needless to say, I removed the GE washer and dryer from my cart and replaced them with LG brand.
Dec 25, 2022 waited 6 months for my prepaid in full GE GSS25 refrigerator. Went to change filteras light came on. Used a $60 GE XWFE filter . removed and installed as instructed in GE guide. Now I get "ERR" and no water to icemaker and water on door. CHnage back to old filter, wont work either. Help!!

Just tried to replace our water filter, which has been done religiously every 6 months, and now have the Error for the filter replacement. We have an XWFE filter, purchased at Lowes as we always have. This is where we purchased the refrigerator. How many filters do I have to purchase and return before I get one that does not give an error? It is not like we are purchasing an after market part. It is a Genuine GE XWFE filter.

for side by side model cartridge installation, make sure you rotate the cartridge holder away from the frig, then line up the 2 holes, turn filter right quarter turn it will slip into place and is now ready to be gently pushed into support brackets..

Unfortunately, I also struggled with the filter problem for days before I found the solution! GE solved it with a chip, so that only its own filters can be used, it cannot be replaced with a filter from another party, only the one in which the chip was installed! (rough) So the XWFE types have a chip, while the XWF type does not! The only solution is to buy a GE chipped filter, which unfortunately costs approx. $50! The aftermarket, but replaceable XWF type is not good, because it does not have a chip!
Why is it that every brand new filter i find at lowes or home depot have black residue on the filter? Is that supposed to happen?

I had an issue replacing the filter and kept getting the "Leak" error. Fridge was new and under warranty so they sent someone out to come take a look. The repair service worker was able to get the filter to start dispensing water by completely wiping off the water on the filter and the filter fridge connector. If it detects any kind of water, it produces this error. Kind of silly knowing that part of replacing the filter makes water come out.
My arrow also didn't line up all the way and was slightly off, but still worked. 🤷♀ Good luck everyone!

My refrigerator is only a couple of years old. I have replaced the filter once myself without issues. I just bought a brand new GE filter and keep getting the error message. Between this and the freezer handle falling off, it makes it hard to think about ever getting another GE.

I genuinely cannot wait to carve the RFID tag from my $50 replacement filter and smack it right onto every $7 generic filter for the rest of my ownership of this fridge. I would have never bought this refrigerator if I knew that you RFID-locked your filters, what a shitty feature.

We don't recommend altering your filter or using a non-GE filter in your fridge as we've not tested or approved the unit with that in mind. You don’t have to carve it out from the XWFE models, you can simply heat up the label with a heat gun or hairdryer and pull the label off. The RFID is embedded in the label itself. Be careful not to tear the RFID tag part up, or it won’t work anymore

Hi, Vivi. We hate to hear the water for your dispenser is not working. When reinstalling the filter as the video shows, be sure it is a genuine GEA filter. Many filters bought online claim to be genuine, but counterfeits will not work in the fridge. Next, check the water reservoir at the back at the fresh food section to make sure it has not frozen. If issues continue, service may be needed. - JB

Frustrating! I just tried installing a new xwfe filter I received from Amazon. The err message is not going away. The older filter works, although is older than 6 months, but the new one doesn’t. Help!!!

@@morenopaco Exactly! Before we moved, we had a similar ge fridge that’s as new in 2017 and used a different type of filter and never had any issues in 2+ years. The first time we have to change the filter on this new one and it’s awful. Wish they would just keep it simple.

its a fridge... stop acting like you've created some impressive appliance with hot new tech. Its a pump connected to a line with a filter and some type of monitoring device that signals another. But fine, I can move past that stupidity BUT to suggest that the fins were a good addition to the area that used to be empty space so now the filter CANNOT secure properly is beyond stupid. Im all for making it fit but no amount of pushing is going to make the solid plastic ribbing move any more out of the way. Are you suggesting I take a dremmel to the plastic and cut it out? Ripping the chip off the existing one and slapping it onto a 3rd party filter should work fine but the filter wouldn't ever reset because it would be reading the same id every 6 months leaving the change filter light on... aside from doing some more modification. Giant pain in rear end!
I was thinking just that. Would it be possible to just slap the rfid from the existing filter to a xwf filter. Did you try it?

I have a side by side. After changing filter it said to reset the filter change indicator button. There is No button on mine!!
terrible experience, went to this video to see how to change filter and the whole cheap crap plastic compartment came off with the filter, then I had to try to get the stupid plastic pegs to line up to get the damn thing back in. Remind me never to change my filter again. What a joke!

Damn, this isn’t good news reading these issues. I too have a 6 month old fridge. Just tried changing the filter from a (3pk) Not only do I get a ERR msg, it doesn’t fully lineup either the mark like the original filter. 🤬🤬🤬

This is a total rip off. Requiring purchase of a $55 filter is such a disappointment in my new GE Refrigerator. I wonʻt recommend GE again because of this. I specifically looked for reliable performance and a this is insane. I DO NOT WANT TEXT ALERTS... I want to be able to replace my filter for $15... GET RID OF the RFID chip!

Bought a new filter from Lowes. GE filter XWFE, same one that came with the fridge. The new one will not work as after you push it in place you can not turn it to the right so it will work. Called GE, no help. Examined the new filter. The area around the nozzles on the new one has added plastic filler put in. The old one this is not there. When you put it in, you can not get it in far enough to be able to turn the filter so it can be used.
Same issue here - was GE able to help you? We have tried so many times and it just wont fit.

Thanks for asking. The XWFE replaces the XWF filter and is embedded with Leak-Detecting Sensing Technology. This enables refrigerators to shut down the water valve when a leak is detected at the filter. The size, shape, assembly, and installation of the filter remains unchanged from the previous XWF filter.

I bought the expensive GE XWFE filters, removed the old, put in the new, and the button will not open the solenoid to let the water flow. I pushed the button for more than five minutes. Still nothing. I held down the filter button. Nothing. This is a model two door with freezer on bottom - GNE27JYMWFFS. I put the old filter back in, and it works. Try the new one again, and it doesn't work. In my humble opinion this GE appliance is a piece of garbage, and because of it I will avoid any and all GE appliances from here on out. How in the world did they make this so complicated? What shame. Repeat: avoid GE appliances. Headache after headache.

I hate it when companies do things that they pretend is for the consumer's benefit, but it's actually for their own (sell overpriced filters). Go check the many videos that show you how to hack your way out of buying their filters.
I purchased a 3-pack filter from GE's website and the first one worked fine a few months back. Yesterday I tried to replace my filter with a second one from my 3-pack and the water doesn’t come out and there is an ERR message. When I put back the previous filter it works normally. I tried the third from the pack and the same thing happens as with the second one. Are these defective? We followed the same process as the first time we changed. This is frustrating to be without filtered water after paying for the expensive GE filters directly from your website.

Great instruction but it doesn't work ... Working before trying to change the filter ... First filter change and ended in an Err code with no water coming out and no ice. I will need to call a repair service ... To get ice ...

Why did you change this design from the XWF...this XWFE is garbage and costs a ton. Which wouldn't be half bad but it doesn't work!
I tried off Amazon several times and the fridge just gives an error message...and yes it was a XWFE...had to order the bypass plug instead but now I'm thinking I paid to have this water filter, why am I settling for a bypass plug? Still under warranty so I should just send this trash back and let GE deal with the loss. Do NOT buy GE if it uses this filter! I know I won't again.
