    Hi all. Good guide. This guide is not for 556UA, just for 555. In 556 the components are "inverted", so you should remove the backplate as explained in this video, plus one more screw which is hidden under one of the four fubber foot (one of the four rubbers under the screen if you have the laptop open). All, refeer to components, is the same proccess. Thanks a lot for a clear and useful guide.

    Probably could've figured this out on my own but definitely saved me some headaches (only a few though). My mom bought a F555U model which has the same case. Sales rep talked her into an SSD (which I agreed with since it was a good buy and mom isn't super patient with computers). Now I just have to get rid of the crapware, install some useful stuff and teach her proper usage methods (image based backups, malware scans).

    Thanks for the video. I have just replaced my hard drive with a Samsung 860 EVO SSD. Unfortunately when I arrived at the step removing the keyboard and touchpad ribbon. I gave a tug on both ribbons and the little black plastic tab broke off a protrusion on one end for the keyboard input.
    After I removed the keyboard I found the black pieces will release the ribbon ends easily if you flip them up. When you insert the ribbons back in just flip them down again. I was able to align the broken tab and insert the ribbon and scotch tap it down. i don't know how long it may hold but I'll see if there are replacements. To save time you may want to use an empty egg carton. Throw each screw in the separately and number the carton divisions if necessary starting with the upper left screw otherwise, it's a guessing game. The boot time is so much faster now. It's really worth the upgrade.

      You may find electrical tape lasts longer than scotch tape for holding it in place, and is non-conductive.

I just bought mine last month not realizing it didn't have a dual band wifi card and now I'm paying for 5.0 ghz Wifi that I can't even utilize. Thanks for this. I didn't have a pry tool, so I now have sore fingers, but this gave me the confidence that I wouldn't break the tabs getting it open. I really wish I hadn't bought this laptop from PC World - it's slow and noisy (cpu fan?) and has niggly things you don't think about in the shop (like no caps and num lock leds). PC World's policy of no returns is ridiculous. I won't be buying from them again - in fact I'll probably get a Macbook Pro from the Apple Store when I'm due for a new laptop. At least with an SSD, the laptop will be usable like my old i5 Sony Vaio.

    Even in 2019 its proving useful. So I thank you Sir!!! On a side note. I have the X555QA A12 4GB Ram 1TB HDD and its still an issue. The HDD is overly slow, the Ram can't keep up with the junkware they add. I spent about 6 hours getting rid of all the software, not because it was hard to get rid of, it was sooo slow it took about half hour to get a single task done.
    To be fair, after getting rid of software and freeing up services limited to only windows services and stopping that piece of S*** anti virus, and also getting rid of onedrive, and couple other things, it starting working well, but still not up to standards for my liking in 2019, so going out today to get a ssd, got some more ram coming tomorrow. I think this could be an awesome machine apart from display, when I get the upgrades. I can play OBLIVION on this thing, on low settings because of the ram bottleneck rubbish and probably hard drive not helping either.
    Any way thanks for video!!!

    It also has 4GB DDR4 soldered on the MB itself.

      I get about 4 hours but that depends how you use it. I really don't recommend buying this laptop. The build quality isn't up to the price and the hard drive is really slow, so you have the additional cost of an SSD to consider.

    Thank you for this very helpful video. I've just performed the surgery on my own X555U and it went well. Reading the video's comments was also useful: Thanks to Angie's Pantry comment I was extra careful when peeling off the cable that was glued onto the original HDD. In my case, it was glued *really* strong, and I ended up sliding an old credit card behind it to sloooowly peel it off the hard drive. In the end, it worked and now I need to see if I can stop hating this laptop without that maddening slow disk. Thanks again and good luck!

      +Vadim K Yes, 4GB on-board + 8GB in the DIMM socket. I'd go with 4GB + 4GB though as it'll generally give better performance, particularly for 3D where a balanced memory controller configuration is preferable.

    Hi James. I've been looking at buying a new laptop, specifically for the purpose of video editing, and when I saw the specs of this particular laptop vs the price I was impressed. However after seeing the laptop in person, as you say, it feels incredibly flimsy and plastic. Im wondering how the inclusion of the SSD helped the overall performance, or whether you think I should just go for a completely different machine and, if so, do you know of any better laptops for video editing within the same price range? Cheers.

    • @BrueComputing
      @BrueComputing  8 років тому

      I completely agree, I did a first impressions here and wasn't very impressed: ua-cam.com/video/F7r9NuMRsRw/v-deo.html
      Fitting the SSD speeds up boot and loading times a lot, and makes it a much nicer machine to use, but you can see they've skimped on the build quality and HDD performance to get the headline specs at the price.
      To be honest, its at a weird price point, there isn't much else out there which gets the 1080p display and Skylake CPU - I've JUST set up a Toshiba Satellite L50-C-22L which I got on Clearance from Currys for a customer at £480 and it had better build than the ASUS, but while it was 1080p it had a i5-5200U, 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM, so a little lower spec.
      I've set up a couple ASUS GL552VW systems recently (amzn.to/295z3cQ) and that's quite a bit more expensive (just over £800) but is a massive step up in performance with the quad-core i7 chip, GeForce GTX 960M and 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD. Screen is a TN panel so shifts a bit off-centre, but good value for what it is and much nicer chassis than the X555 series.

    • @navillus93
      @navillus93 8 років тому

      Thanks James. To be honest I think I'll just go for one of the Zenbooks, probably the UX303 (i7, 12gb, 256gb SSD). That way I can still get decent performance and what seems to be good build quality. Thoughts?

    • @BrueComputing
      @BrueComputing  8 років тому

      I use a UX305CA as my work laptop and have been pleased with it. Not used the UX303 but I've liked most the previous Zenbooks (used most of them in my previous work) and it looks like a nice spec and well priced at the moment: amzn.to/29htrZK

      @@arenas5196 Ah, sorry, thought you were commenting on a different video.
      Sounds like there is a short somewhere in the cable or connector - my GUESS would be you've inserted the cable slightly twisted on one end so two pins have shorted together and burnt the cable, and been unlucky in doing it twice.

      1 x DDR3-1600 SO-DIMM slot, accessible from the back of the machine. The rest is soldered to the mainboard.

    I have an ASUS x550L with 4GB of RAM. I just recently installed a 1tb SATA HDD. It runs a INTEL Core i5-4200U CPU @1.6GHz 2.30GHz (64bit). How much RAM can I upgrade to? And what type ? DDR3 or 4

      I don't think it has any mini-PCIe slots - the wireless card is an M2 card attached to the underside of the mainboard iirc.

      Bluetooth and wireless are normally built into the same module. You'd have to remove the mainboard to get access to this IF it is removable. I no longer have this laptop though so I can't check.

  • @CentralCanada
    @CentralCanada 7 років тому

    X555BA does not even have a screw to allow opening the RAM cover, just a plastic filler plug (?) which doesn't seem removable. Contrary to their online manual and their phone 'support' reading the same info off their screen which shows a screw to open panel. Support super' was sending (mid-day) a email to Tech' asking why . . . . .

    Not necessary to remove ribbon cable from USB card. Leave connected and just move card out of the way. I made the mistake of breaking the clip (me dumb). Now can't find a replacement. Totally needless accident.

    • @ps3customgamer
      @ps3customgamer 7 років тому

      Angie's Pantry too easy to put too much force on the ribbon connector terminals when removing the USB card from the slot much better to flick up the connectors and remove the ribbon cable on both sides.
