Many thanks. Just implemented this process. Used Macrium Reflect for cloning. Kept it simple by cloning a one terabyte platter HD to a one terabyte SSD. My laptop is an HP Pavilion 15 about 5 years old that I had previously upgraded to a one TB HD a year or so ago. My first plan was to place the SSD device in the CD-ROM caddy. But that would not give the best SSD performance. So I replaced the old HD with the new SDD (after cloning). And then I fitted the old HD in the caddy and replaced the CD-drive with the caddy. BINGO! That's the way to get the best performance from the SSD, as this video says. Now the clincher. Anyone who uses a laptop onsite to do a contract job has to backup continually. Otherwise, there is the risk that malware will cause loss of work and lost time and even breach of contract. But with this setup, backup is easy. When I take a break of 5 or 10 minutes every hour or so, I save a new version of the file I am working on (v.01, v.02, v.03). Now, instead of backing up each new version on an external USB drive, I back up on the second internal HD. Saves time. And if I install new software or install an update to existing software or to the operating system, at the end of the working day, I can just clone the SSD to the second internal HD. Then if catastrophe strikes in the form of failure of the SSD or malware, I can just swap the old HD back into the drive bay on the motherboard and I am back at work in less than 10 minutes. The cost of a one TB SSD plus HD caddy are now low enough to be classed as insurance against data loss. Actually, I am more paranoid about data loss than this and do keep more than one clone of my main drive on an external HD. And store one clone in a safe place in case the laptop is lost or stolen. I have worked this HP Pavilion very hard on offshore sites in more than one country and more than one continent, back and forth every day from hotel to client office. And it still chugs along. Obviously I don't edit videos, at least not often. So the "slow" speed of the I5 CPU is no problem and since my laptops usually last 10 years (until the keyboards wear out) I have no reason to replace the laptop with a later model. So great to boot in seconds instead of minutes.

@@naveenkinnal5413 Actually the SSD does not need a caddy to be connected to the SATA-III port. But, to make use of the existing HDD, that requires a caddy to be installed in the Disk drive bay.
The reason that the HDD may not be detected in the optical drive is because maybe, the HDD is drawing too much current from the DVD's internal port, during the initial spin up, HDD will draw significantly more current for a few seconds, manufacturers probably didn't anticipated their DVD slot will experience such a current surges so they might not make enough power headroom for the DVD power rails. Of course this is from my personal opinion, it may depended on several factors (Chipsets, Drivers, HDD brands...)

My Lenovo only has a DVD drive blank. I'm wondering if I could use some dremel tool ingenuity to make my own blank, or just buy a caddy. I planned on making sure it even had SATA ports when I added ramm. I guess I could look with a flashlight, it's only one screw to remove.

I have to restart the system manually (meaning I have to Shut Down by pressing the bottom and put the system on again). then again it gets back to the point it was before and carries on! when the installation is finished the system runs perfectly until I want to shut down or restart it. Then again the same scenario. I have to restart the system once or a few times to get it loaded completely. I have done all the possible solutions (found on internet) but none works. Could it be something wrong with the SSD itself? NOTE: the windows works fine when I am connecting the old HDD drive but just a bit slower. Many thanks in advance

I'm using a ORICO 2.5inch Hard Drive Caddy Tray with 1T SSD in my HP Envy dv6. The drive is recognized and works just fine until I reboot, then it is no longer recognized. It is not even shown in BIOS. If I reboot umpteen time, it might be recognized until the next reboot. I've changed the SSD to a HHD and have the exact same result. Both SSD and HHD work great in an external enclosure. I am stumped and frustrated.
You can use a USB SATA connector or enclosure to do your clone (I used EaseUS) so you do not waste time swapping. And the reason why your laptop did not boot to the "caddied" HDD was because of the boot order in the BIOS. By default, most laptops disables boot order and only set to boot to the primary SATA connection (unless you press the boot menu hotkey). If You have cloned the HDD to the SSD before attaching the SSD to the primary SATA, it would have booted to the SSD immediately.

Dude you are so underrated. Are you even earning from making videos like this?
I have put my old hard drive in the caddy as a backup drive. But with the caddy it takes the laptop forever to shut down, even with Windows installed in a ssd. Any clue?
My Lenovo only has a DVD drive blank. I'm wondering if I could use some dremel tool ingenuity to make my own blank, or just buy a caddy. I planned on making sure it even had SATA ports when I added ramm. I guess I could look with a flashlight, it's only one screw to remove.
My cs DVD port is showing ATAP 1,can I still install an ssd.
I would like to replace my hdd with ssd which is SATA 3, but will I be able to replace my optical drive with hdd as it has ATAP 1 slot.
What size of caddy would you prefer for hp pavilion 15 p242tx or p029tx?
9mm or what..
When you buy the caddy for the SSD go ahead and order on for the optical drive you removed. Its still good and valuable should you need it in the future for loading an application you can't download or just watching a movie. I kept mine around for 2 years before I decided to reinvest in optical drives (4k blu-ray) again.
I already have ssd as my main drive, but can I use another ssd for secondary drive?
dude where to buy the tools set??
What if my laptop does not have optical drive, but it does have the slim SATA connection. Can I still use the caddy and leave it hidden in the interior?
how to know if my optical drive's SATA port is SATA2 or SATA3?

Hi EJ,
Installed SSD using caddy in my Acer Aspire 4750.
Installed fresh copy win 7 on SSD, then deleted the old OS in HDD.
Now I'm having issue when shutting down/ restart my laptop, it freezes.
I think it something to do with the caddy.
*SSD is still on caddy.
Any advice?
Sounds like you need to flip the switch on the caddy
Hi,
I have installed Windows 10 on my new SSD and done all the driver and windows updates but when it is support to shut down or restart it doesn't do it properly and i have to do it manually.
- When I am trying to install the windows form a boo-table USB (downloaded from Microsoft website) the system won't restart by itself and it just looks it is freezed.
Could someone help !!! My Caddy won't recognize my HDD.
Have u checked in disk manager? sometimes new drives dont show up but are visibe in disk management. It should be unallocated disk. Rclick, create volume, give letter and name, done

HI, i CAN CLONE FROM MY OLD HDD (INSTALLED IN DVD SLOT) TO NEW SSD. ??
I have a dell 5558 laptop with 4gb ram, i3 5th gen, 2gb nvidia graphics processor,1 tb hdd, dvd drive is also there.
Should I get a SSD for better speed?
1) If yes should I put SSD in place of optical drive using caddy?
2) Or should I place SSD in place of hdd and put hdd in place of optical drive using caddy?
Will all these things support my lappy?
I have read that the optical drive uses sata 2 and hdd might have sata 3. Thus SSD will perform better with sata 3, that's why option 2 is better?

My laptop doesnt have a dvd caddy to replace. I have both an internal ssd and hdd. Yes I have an m.2 but I want to save money. Is there a bracket smaller than 3.5 inches that can hold both within a gaming laptop?
The generic sata hdd caddy comes in 9.5 and 12.7 mm. Wich one is the most common?
9.5
9:46 Nice explanation sir... 👍
Great monitor my man! Dell FP2007. I own it for like 15-16 years. Colours still perfectly accurate. The tilt adjustment gave up unfortunately. )
Thanks for catching the limitation of the Msata interface is limited to 240MB. My old laptop needs to upgrade from its old USB 2.0 and 100Mbs Ethernet. In your research, have you thought about a msata out from the laptop interface to either a USB 3.0 or Gig Lan? I imagine it would be nice if the caddy could be fabricated into a little hub interface.
So bro, your point is that I don't have to move my HDD where it's in the current place and I just have to buy (ODD) caddy and a 2.5 inch SSD? BTW I have "ASUS VIVOBook-X442U" laptop. Help me with this bro so that I can make this laptop faster for gaming experience.

Thanks for the nice video, Now I have installed the SSD in place of old HDD, and my old HDD in place of the DVD using a caddy, leaving the old Windows 8.1 partition as is. I then clean installed windows 10 in the SSD, and the system works fine.
now my question is. Is there any way to boot from the old windows on HDD as well as the new windows 10 in a dual boot fashion?
Yeah it work in boot selection
