Main purpose of this PFBR is to generate Pu reserves, problem is doubling time, it takes next 10-20 years to generate sufficient fuel for next step. Here thorium is used as blanket material, later when metallic fuel will be created, then thorium can be directly induced in PFBR to reduce doubling time.
For stage 3, AHWR is build for testing, but new reators are build for stage 3 like Indian Fast Molten Salt Reactor, High Temperature Reactor, Accelerated Driven System to replace PFBR

Can you write us some reading material for this?
Yes. I did an internship in Nuclear fuel complex in hyderabad. The concerned heads depicted the same problem which youve mentioned. It takes 10-20 years of time to generate 3rd stage fuel but it can be sufficient only for 1 AWHR reactor. To get more and more fuel we need to construct more PFBR reactors which is very huge and risky hence the first pfbr reactor got delayed sk many years. If only we can have atleast 4-6 PFBR reactors we can enter 3rd stage without any functional errors related to fuel. And also not to mention the tremendous amount of plutonium researves we can produce with enriched uraniun and plutonium fuel cells from 2nd stage which can be used for plutonium bombs too much destructive than uranium bombs.

These figures are with me too. Some sources, (particularly American Geology department hand-outs) say that India has a little over half of global Thorium reserves.
India never made any major breakthrough in Technology in the last two to three centuries (save the Raman effect that can't be counted as Technology). India must come out of this mindset. Now, is India's opportunity to do so. India can be the pioneer in designing & putting to work, the first Thorium reactor & its power generation. Her designed reactor when "commercialised" will make us a Technological power & exporter.
Two things need to be taken up "no" on priority. The first is to form a global Thorium producers' association (to regulate trade) as a control regime. Strangely most of Thorium reserves are in the Anglo-phone countries (where English speaking is an asset, the language is spoken & understood) have the maximum collective reserves. This is essential in view of this asset getting cornered by some predator countries.
Next, to take up immediately the design & production of reactors for powering submarines & other ships in the Indian Navy.
India’s 2nd nuclear power stage is to convert U238 to Pu239 in fast breeder reactors whereas in 3rd stage of nuclear power programme is to convert Thorium Th23 to Uranium U233. It is also in fast breeder reactors.

Once good amount of Pu329 becomes available than we will be very close to self sustaining stage 3 .

1969 boiling water reactor(BWR) was installed at Tarapur. PHWR was installed in 2005-2006 tenure.

I may b wrong,& very surficial knowledge but I have read that using thorium as a only fuel instead of plutonium as reactor fuel has huge advantage as it produce nothing to no nuclear waste & thorium can hardly used as bomb. thorium reactor inherently very safe as they operate as normal atmospheric pressure & has hardly an chance of nuclear explosion (Chernobyl) or meltdown (fukushima).

55 years is long. I hope stage 3 and 4 won't take this long. Fast breeder reactors produce more fuel than it consumes. Converts thorium mix fuel into usable Uranium U235.
