Wow, one impossible challenge follows the other. I just watched the Weedle, Ditto and Level 100 Trainers Challenge and just a few days later comes the next highly interessting challenge! Keep doing those videos, they are just so entertaining. Great work man! Thank you very much!
Hearing that he wanted pyschic for his hidden power I instantly wondered how bad Karen would be with having to use struggle against sand attack. Also, 69 power is the true best power for hidden power
Unown is one of my favorite Pokémon because I think the concept of it, visually and with hidden power, is super cool. I actually didn’t even know how exactly the letter it is and the hidden power stats worked in this gen until this video! I’m also decently good at reading things that are written using Unown which sometimes is a useful skill… sometimes lol. I’m still early in the video as of typing this and really excited to see how this goes! Currently listening to the sponsor part of the video.
0:55 The move actually still exists, it's just exclusive to Unown now, meaning it's only in games that include it (namely BDSP and Legends). Funnily enough, it actually got buffed in Legends. Since Legends uses Effort Levels instead of IVs, rather than having its type vary based on the user, it's instead based on its target. Namely, it *always* does super effective damage. I wonder if this change will stick around for any future games with Unown (it probably won't, but it'd still be cool to see.)
One interesting thing about these solo runs is seeing the intricacies of the gym leader and trainer strategies in the games. When you’re playing without restrictions, it’s easy enough to brute force your way past pretty much any strategy, but solo runs don’t always give you that option.
You know, I'd love to see False Swipe Gaming crew do a video wiith Jrose11. Like imagine if FSG talked about the history of solo runs/nuzlockes or something, talking about traits and pokemon that have historically always done well game to game or ones that are impossible/horrible. combined with commentary from jrose on how correct they are, adding additonal insights, and ofc doing a solo run.
Nice video! I liked the decision to go with psychic hidden power. I bet it was tedious to do struggle strats, but it was interesting and entertaining to watch!
(29:33) Karen is now Agatha, it seems. :P (30:13) 1 HP and a dream, yo! (34:39) Very clutch timing for your crit there. (34:59) And that's game! That's sweet that you didn't have to get to level 100 for Red!
You know... now that I think about it, Karen kind of looks like a younger Agatha... and they are both effectively Lance's second in command... and it's Odd that Blue only had to defeat the Elite 4 to become champion when the standard set by following games is an Elite 4 and a Champion... New Head Canon, Blue beat the Elite 4 and Champion Lance, bumping the lowest ranked Elite 4 off the team, knocking the other three down a rank, and knocking Lance from Champion to Elite 4 just in time for Red to face Lorelei... And Creepypasta... Agatha didn't retire or die during the timeskip between RGBY and gSC... She used her mastery over Ghosts to possess a younger body and took over her victim's Identity... Both tend to be the most trolly of their respective Elite 4's, both have a pair of poison types that aren't of their stated specialty, both have a Gengar...
Man I remember when these games first came out and internet access was restricted because of tying up phone lines and such so we only had access to really shady rumors, aka the mew truck, but omg the rumors about this particular Pokémon were insane. We would tell each other the dumbest stuff about this little noodle lol the one I fell for was the “if you catch 5 unown and spell O-M-E-G-A in your party in that order they get a special super powerful attack.” I spent a week hunting those little suckers down. I felt so cheated lol
Jrose i love putting on your videos for background listening. this might sound bad, but i even like to put them on when i want to take a nap. BUT! you're not boring! you just make nice chill videos that i know i'll enjoy either by watching the ride or by taking a little nap, lol
Thanks for making such good in depth quality pokemon videos I listen to you all day at work and it's super awesome hearing all of the stories. I love when something crazy happens with a lot of good luck and you go off the chain lol.
Another great video, as always! I think another interesting one might be Unown fighting type hidden power. You're still equally weak to psychic Pokemon, but dark types are a cinch, and 2 of the dark Pokemon (Sneasel and Murkrow) become neutral effectiveness
I used to have a mostly unown party in crystal until later on. Honestly, most Pokémon seem like junk until you pass Ecruteak. Whopper, bellsprout and zubat (to later get a crobat) were the only other Pokémon worth using. Edit: I’m surprised that you didn’t go for a dragon unown. I’m curious how you’ll get passed dark types.
Two of the best mons for a casual run, Geodude and Mareep, are available before Union Cave. You also get the Old Rod for Magikarp into Gyarados, and Abra is available on the route before Goldenrod. Funny enough, Abra _also_ gets the elemental Punch TMs, which are right there in Goldenrod anyway! That's four great team members (+ your starter) before the third badge!!
I hope he tries other hidden power types, psychic will be really rough against Karen and I feel like it’s probably not worth it, or at least worth trying other options
I thought the same thing. The type I'd mainly try would be Ice. Even if resisted like with Pryce it should still work and I guess it would fare decently towards most other trainers/teams and especially the E4 would not be that bad. Yes, Psychic has STAB but I would fear that Karen or Dark Pokemon in general would be quite a hassle. Most other types would also have a weak matchup or two, but Water or maybe Dragon would both be worth a try. Dragon is neutral vs. most and Water would be overall ok I guess.
Wow, that title wasn't lying, Unown ended up being decently powerful! Minor Hidden Power complaint: while it doesn't matter at all, I wish Hidden Power was ??? type, like Curse was in Gens 2-4.
Rock is technically the best offensive hidden power, at least in a vacuum, as nothing is immune to it and it has the least types that resist it VS the ones that are weak to it
Also, after looking at the Gen II type chart, Dragon would probably be the best type to have, since it's only bad against Steel, which was already a problem with Psychic, but does full damage against Dark. Would probably require a decent level just to ensure a one-shot on a lot of stuff, but not having to Struggle against Dark-types might make it less painful overall.
considering Unown is in the little animation that plays if you stay idle on the title screen for too long with Suicune, you'd think they'd be more, important
Mystery Berry vs. pre-Elite Four Rival was great. Didn't think that item would come up. 1 HP Karen win was insane. Unown winning before Level 100 was legit shocking, that means Unown is actually better than a lot of other Pokemon you'd think are better than it. Great run.
I never saw that before but K's back sprite kinda looks like a duck with one big "white" eye that is quacking to the left and now that you saw it you can't unsee it 🙂
I think Ice type Hidden Power would have been pretty good too for the sheer amount of types you hit. Then again you'd probably have to shoot for max power because you're not getting STAB..
You know, I think Hidden Power Dragon might have been better. It's resisted by nothing except Steel in this generation, so you wouldn't really have to worry about that except against Jasmine (which was also resisting Pyschic). Plus, you would get super effective damage against Clair and Lance, which is always nice considering they are the final gym leader and final elite 4. I just think the existance of dark types in this generation is such a massive downside to using hidden power psychic.
The trade off being without the Same type attack bonus against anything other than Dark and psychic he's only doing 2/3rds the damage. It avoids the Karen brick wall but instead of having to level a bunch to beat Karen he'd probably have had to level a bunch across the whole Johto region to make up for it. And Red may have been impossible without insane luck. It'd also make struggle strats redundant which would have cut a lot of the strategy from the video.
I did a Unown solo run in Crystal years ago. Unown W with a 69 Hidden Power Dark. I chose Dark as it seemed most advantageous across the type chart, psychic would mean dark types are immune. I beat Johto, the League, Kanto and Red even. It was a super fun run.
This one seems to be running even faster than usual, like the text and walking animation. Not the playthrough, the playthrough seems to be long enough for how comparatively easy it sounds to be playing out. 😄👍
Thank you so much for your videos. I'm on my third day of running a fever (christmas ist fun this year - not) and your videos are doing an excellent job of distracting me ❤️
I did a run where I just caught 3 Unknowns at the Ruins and rolled with it... just 3 Unknowns for the rest of the game... it was super fun figuring out their typing based on performace in battles...
Here's a somewhat cruel challenge run idea: Unown with Hidden Power Ghost. All those Normal Types in the early game, nearly every trainer, even grinding against most wild Pokémon to prepare for the trainers, all with relying only on Struggle with so little HP to spare and no Rare Candies to speak of. And then after the opening brutal slog, it'll suddenly become trivial until those random no-name trainers who decided to still use a weak Normal type randomly in the middle of their team that your entire strategy now has to bow down to.
That post at 2:00 looks identical to the reply I received when asking about this a couple of years ago for an unown challenge of my own! Dude is a champ for the perfectly accurate response in record time
Psychic seems like such a difficult choice. Being forced to struggle against any trainer that starts with a dark type is just rough. Why not a better offensive type, like ice? I dont think any mandatory battles have a 4x resist to ice other than pryce, and it does neutral to a lot of stuff. Worst case, you never need to struggle.
I had the same thought, but I don't know if Red would be possible without the STAB boost. At least one of Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur will resist just about any other type you would want to use, and Snorlax will ruin your day regardless. Maybe a physical type like rock to bypass Snorlax's SpDef? We still have the problem of no STAB though, which feels bad.
Could do a whole series ranking the secret powers. When selecting my first thoughts went to Ice. Great offensive type with no immunities. Wonder if the ru would be quicker / lower level with different type

I'll be waiting for unown's gen 5 evolution, sigilyph
When he saved at Karen after using the rare candies, saying he hasn't used anything he could get back, I winced.
0:15 I have a many years-old video of an Unown gen 2 solo run on my channel, but it has basically no editing and I'm pretty sure I spammed X items in battle lol.
JRose using the word “excellent” to describe Unown’s Attack and Special Attack really threw me off. 💀 Compared to what he usually works with I suppose it’s pretty good.
cut him some slack, man's just gone through Kanto three times with a Caterpie; almost anything will look like decent stats after that.
@@youmukonpaku3168 Unown is basically a legendary compared to Caterpie. 💀
I quit my job to focus on therapy today. I've been in a very dark corner lately in my life. These videos you put out are often the difference for me. I know a lot of people won't convey this thought and some may even chastise me for saying it out loud. But your videos make a genuine difference in my life by giving me a breather from all thats been going on. I really appreciate you and your editor for what they do. Thank you Jrose11, sincerely. Happy holidays.
Honestly, I was there too, I totally get it.
Hope things will get better eventually
Thanks lad I sincerely appreciate it so much. @@shytendeakatamanoir9740
I’m so glad to see you having sponsors ♥️ it helps the channel, but they have also been very intriguing to me!
I believe the video that kicked off the recent solo run craze was Pikasprey's Ditto run a few years back
you mean the impossible escapes person? why am i not suprised lol they make excellent stuff@@felixcroc
@@felixcroc Jrose’s Magikarp run came out before that, and solo runs were already a thing
This is beautiful, glad to see Unown getting more attention ☺️
Pory is here!
Of course! Unown is close to my heart. And K is pretty close to X if you squint!
Pory proved Unown is even better in gen I!
@@DanBottiglieriwell, lack of Dark type helped 😅
Nice video! I liked the decision to go with psychic hidden power. I bet it was tedious to do struggle strats, but it was interesting and entertaining to watch!
I love the 29:35 "favorable Agatha fight" 😂
(29:33) Karen is now Agatha, it seems. :P
(30:13) 1 HP and a dream, yo!
29:32 i really had to laugh when you said try for a favorable agatha fight
Hey Jrose, It's not gen 1 anymore 😂
The speed of this edit between you and aj is amazing, i could had seorn you did this on deotch like yesterday
Another great video, as always!
I think another interesting one might be Unown fighting type hidden power. You're still equally weak to psychic Pokemon, but dark types are a cinch, and 2 of the dark Pokemon (Sneasel and Murkrow) become neutral effectiveness
Actually, Sneasel is 4x weak to Fighting.
Only 5 min in myself, but struggle is typeless after gen 1, so itll be struggle
Whopper, yes
Geodude is nuts in Gen 2 Johto.
@@skyeplaysgames4598 Love me a Whopper from Burger King. lol
Nice run. I was thinking you'd use dragon or dark type hidden power for better coverage, but you struggling with struggle was more interesting.
29:35 I love how you appear to associate Karen with Agatha
Think rock would be quite strong, though Jasmine could be quite an obstacle
Yeah, i went through a type chart and would have picked rock too. That immunity is killer, and i dont think having a stab move is worth it.
Problem with alot of hidden powers is the req ivs
Rock can do it. Just gets walled at Red.
Every time I see a jrose upload, I get so excited!!
29:30 bruh so ptsd'd by the lottery he calls Karen Agatha lol
Wow, that title wasn't lying, Unown ended up being decently powerful! Minor Hidden Power complaint: while it doesn't matter at all, I wish Hidden Power was ??? type, like Curse was in Gens 2-4.
Silver is clearly Blue in a wig confirmed.
Unown was always one of my favorite pokemon ever since I saw the 3rd movie back in the early 2000's. Im happy to see you doing a challenge using it!
Yeah but you wont get stab on this so scyther could be a problem
@@grundgutigertv6170HP Fire would be a good one too. Kingdra would be an absolute threat though.
Imagine this: you are one of the elite four. A kid walks through with a level 80 K.
considering Unown is in the little animation that plays if you stay idle on the title screen for too long with Suicune, you'd think they'd be more, important
Man it’s hard to believe that MDB’s only unown run was 4 years ago……damn
"We just have to reset for a favorable Agatha fight"
Old habits die hard 😂
Cozy joined the club.
New JRose vidya, Cozy must drop what doing and watch.
As always very well done mi fren. Thank you!
Sweet, you’ve been working hard on these buddy!
Oh gosh.. this one is going to be nuts! Good luck my dude
I think this is the first sponsored jrose video! Congrats man you deserve it!
Mystery Berry vs. pre-Elite Four Rival was great. Didn't think that item would come up. 1 HP Karen win was insane. Unown winning before Level 100 was legit shocking, that means Unown is actually better than a lot of other Pokemon you'd think are better than it. Great run.
I never saw that before but K's back sprite kinda looks like a duck with one big "white" eye that is quacking to the left and now that you saw it you can't unsee it 🙂
Unown has been my favorite mon for over half my life at this point. Love the video
Dragon deez
"Unown has better stats than Kirlia." - Keizaron, early 2020.
it's so uncanny hearing jrose talking about a hoyoverse game XD
And now for Jrose's next series: "Beating Crystal with Unown using EVERY typed Hidden Power"
And then after the opening brutal slog, it'll suddenly become trivial until those random no-name trainers who decided to still use a weak Normal type randomly in the middle of their team that your entire strategy now has to bow down to.
and you cannot beat snorlax
That post at 2:00 looks identical to the reply I received when asking about this a couple of years ago for an unown challenge of my own!
Dude is a champ for the perfectly accurate response in record time
All of Kanto's gym leaders: "You shall stand NO CHANCE against all of us!"
Jrose's Unown: "K."
@@CptGallantit might have taken a few more tries, but certainly would happen.
Dude this was an awesome video man. Thank you.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Years man
You should try a Delibird run 😂 present is such an awful move.
Unown's design would have been a lot better if its type was the type of its Hidden Power.
the machop you get when trading in goldenrod also has a gold berry if I'm correct
I loved Unknown so much lol. Idk why people never used them, thank you for showing everyone how amazing they are.
Could do a whole series ranking the secret powers. When selecting my first thoughts went to Ice. Great offensive type with no immunities. Wonder if the ru would be quicker / lower level with different type
Wow another video so soon after the three game Caterpie marathon! Love it!
Happy you're getting sponsors Jrose, thanks for the videos!
The 30 min watch was worth seeing the 1 hp. Cool video!
Red: "..."
JRose: "k"
Nice mystery berry trick. This series still manages to be interesting and different even after all these years
the HSR Sponsor, letsgo. I was like: Wait is this Wildfire??? thi sis HUGE for my boy ( I am literally playing while watching the video)
Hey Jrose, love your content, watch your videos all the time. FYI, you should get a pop filter for your microphone, and also (if you have an EQ you use) lower the bass frequencies (everything below about 80 Hz). Your "p" sounds hit the mic really hard and it's obvious in this video, especially in the first couple minutes. Keep putting out awesome stuff!
ANOTHER impossible run? You've been spoiling us! Love the vids!
As always, Jrose's ability to spam the A button is rivaled only by his talent for rhyming and we're all here for both of those things 😂
Really interested on how hidden power ice or rock would fare. Would love to see a revisit of this sometime.
Every time I watch your gen 2 playthroughs I always wait for the part where you battle the Elite 4 round 2. I know things don't really change but I would always battle them after finishing Kanto but before Red as a habit
My favourite thing about K Unown is that it's front sprite looks like OK. 😅
This put a smile on my face.
I love how he's so used to facing off with Agatha in the Elite Four that accidentally referred to Karen as Agatha at some point. So much Red and Blue on the mind.
