Part 1 - Building an £850 hatchback into a competitive race car.

- The global pandemic scuppered our carefully laid plans for the spring and summer of 2020 so we needed something else to pass the time and to look forward to. Enter the City Car Cup...
Launched in June 2020, the new series from the BRSCC is open to the Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107 and captured our imagination instantly so we leapt upon the chance to whip out the grinder and set about finding a car to cut up.
This new series will detail the build, preparation, testing, racing and development of the car. In a frankly unbelievable twist, the car is already finished and has been raced, so we're back on the other projects while this series airs.

2020 has been full of the strangest happenings, not least among them is that we've actually finished a project. This one is done and dusted for the most part and we're already back on the other two after an enforced hiatus. Apologies for the delay in bringing you our normal shows, but it was out of our control. Hope you enjoy this in the meantime and don't worry, more Binky and Escargot is coming your way soon.
You can stop apologising, chaps. It's been seven years already; you think we're bothered by a couple extra months?
@@georgehelliar lololol
@@georgehelliar Yes, I'm bothered. I need to see Binky in British Racing Green paint. My life is empty without that.
You are fantastic! Keep being awesome.

Welcome back lads, I hit the botton so hard, that I broke my mouse. All the best lads.
Absolutely best build channel on UA-cam, by far!

Agreed.
My top 3 are BOM, Goonzquad and some guy called Freddy who bites off way more than he can chew but somehow manages to come good every time.
I concur.
I had just finished watching your last video Freddy when this notification came in, a good Friday!
It's true. Now to get them a wrecked exotic so they can start #trending. ❤️ U Tav
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact this is produced by a couple of blokes in their shed! Big budget tv stuff doesn’t come close.
Thank you.

Collab potential? Fiero rebuild with 3 times as many brackets, and months without updates.... okay, you may have some of this covered already. How about sourcing a new fuel tank for Binky?

That's the exact useful piece of advice that would have stopped me from punching myself in the face with my own steering wheel!
They say you learn from experience...
@@BadObsessionMotorsport I've heard that before.........
It does hurt when you pull a steering wheel full force into your face. My belly was aching when my mate did it.
Funny. I was just talking about this very thing with the mates a couple of days ago.
😆i once picked up an empty cardboard box ( thinking it was full (and heavy)) and smacked myself square in the face with it 😆
It's not Binky but I'll take anything to get my Bad Obsession fix at this point 😃
I needed a small adapter for something at home and I ended up making a template, transfering it to steel, cutting it out with a grinder, bending it by hand into a circle, folding the edges and squeezing them together with a press, finishing it off with a twatting stick.
Moments later I found myself looking at MIG welders online.
@@phenomanII cool story, but did it also "make the noise" at the end?
@@yah5o Sadly I do not own such precise and melodious equipment.
I also used a black marker, as I'm not experienced enough for blue, red or green.
motorbiker46
It’s a wise man that knows he’s not ready or skilled enough to move on from a black marker.
Sadly some falsely believe they possess the needed skills and others are completely oblivious to the needed skills meaning that many people are wielding markers well beyond their skill levels.
You in your wisdom are very close to graduating to a blue marker at the very least.
@@Crewsy Thank you for the kind words. You've genuinely given me more confidence to go for another project so that I can reach the next level. If I reach it, I shall celebrate by acquiring another power tool to aid progress in the future.
I will accept this as a substitute for more Binky episodes, just glad to hear your usual banter and commentary which is one of the things I love about this channel.
A C1 was my first car! I've never clicked on anything more quickly. I unfortunately blew the engine in mine accidentally shifting from second to first somewhere around 40-50 mph... I replaced the engine, and that's how I got into fixing cars. C1s will always have a special place in my heart.
I mean its literally bolting things on and off yet these chaps make it impossible not to watch. Greatest channel on YT by far. Big fan.
Production quality right up there with your other series', and I'm reassured that once Binky is finished, should I still be alive, that we'll continue to get top quality videos from the best build channel on YT. Thank you legends.

Ultimately watchable! When people ask me what I watch on TV and if I like things like Top Gear (in the recent crap years) I tell them that I no longer watch TV for this kind of content, instead I find channels like this that give really high quality content with all the details that real car fans want to see.
OH YEEESSSS, Bad Obsession is back !.
Brilliant idea fella’s, a great way to show how to get into motorsport cheaply and simply, a cheap car, a Lego style bolt and go kit and showing us all that it’s easy for any diy guy, or gal, to do themselves. Can’t wait for part 2. Good times indeed !..
Thanks guys.
A dangerous precedent could be in the offing here as you establish a reputation as completers. I have some concerns as to how you will transport this vehicle to competition days so I hope you'll accept my advice as I recommend a 1980s Ford Cargo as a potential option. Some chaps on here started to convert an old library one and had some innovative ideas with DAF mechanicals, I don't know what became of them though, last seen in a shed.
WHAT HE SAID!!!! :)
🔥Burn!🔥
if they are mechanics i think they woud have one
BOM require some Aloe Vera!
Amazing, a new series! I had wondered what I was going to watch through my 50's!
If you listen carefully you can hear "Binky" weeping in the corner.
Great to have you back guys,,
doesn´t matter that there´s no mini content - just any content from BOM is top notch!!!
BOM: Takes years to build a mini. Builds a race car in a few weeks. Just goes to show how much more goes into a street car!
its more that it take less time to build this car as they cant rebuild the car and make brackets high and low :)
Easiest way to get those window winder clips off is to feed a rag in the gap to hook the end of the clip and just pull it out. No risk of scratching any trims either.
If you are old like me, you have a couple or 3 of the stamped sheet metal tools that push the clip back, making it a quick and easy task.
I use the tool but when it's missing a shoelace works a treat
Yes, sorry I didn't see your comment before I posted the same.
14:10 When I was younger I liked watching Benny Hill on TV, great guy and great English humor ... You guys are amazing too ... :)
Anything that gets people into real motorsport at reasonable cost has got to be awesome, thanks guys!
Others channels talk about what they are going to do... then demonstrate how they are not capable of doing anything right. BOM fabricates and engineers. Everything you guys do is wellt thought out, well planned, executed well. Best show on the planet!
This is awesome! My girlfriend owns a Pug 107, but sadly an auto... when I saw the rules and regulations I instantly pictured myself racing that yellow bubble with wheels... i'm so happy to see someone building it and uploading it to youtube! thanks!
23:19 He didn't say "Make the nooooiiiise!!!" 😭 But i'm really excited for this! 😁
lol , i said it without even thinking
Definitely the biggest let down of the episode. Other than it not going on for another hour or two.
Don't even try to say you didn't say it in your mind..
Nick being supplied brackets and not making his own!
That's a recipe for PTSD and Vietnam style flashbacks.
Are you Evilution of Smart car how-to website fame?
Well, you heard Richard. Nick was sipping Earl Grey. Cruel world this is.
That's why Richard carefully called them 'mounts' and never used the B-word.
I look forward to the episode where the safety turbo is installed.
A neat trick to getting the window winders off with those sort of clips.... is to get a rag, slide it between the door card and handle and start sawing with the rag, this action catches the rag on the two 'ears' of the open side of the clip which in turn pulls it off the spline shaft. For years i mamed, marred and just straight f**ked trims and winders until i learnt this method. Alas..... great to see you two back with some more crazy shenanigans, stay safe over there!
Those are some of the best steering assembly removal sounds I've heard. Especially the ÖÜ when removing the airbag. Such emotion!
Being a dealership technician, seeing you use a prybar to pull the visor stays on the headliner gave me fat goosebumps lol had to remind myself that it's a racecar
For the trim clips, wrap a rag around the handle and pull it back and forth. It will grab the clip and release it. No tools needed!
a stretchy rag, ideally a stocking
I second this tip - I've done it heaps of times and it works a treat
Yep, dealt with that replacing the manual winder in my car (twice! Thanks cheap eBay parts) bonus difficulty? Mine has a trim washer to fill the gap between card and handle. Sure its a two second bang into place part, but what a pain.
I nearly fainted when I heard "Join us next week." Looking forward to more
Thank you guys for filling Bad Obsession fix. Not sure how much longer I could have went without it. Can't wait for next week.
I’ll always say, you guys are one of the truest and most well put together automotive channel on UA-cam, hands down.
Awesome to see a new series guys. Looking forward to seeing some on track adventures.
that was a really fast 28 minutes lol , cant wait for next week
Going to be very strange having a new episode each week rather than each ice age....

"...Wait, this isn't World of Tanks with the Mighty Jingles!" XD
Heh, same here I had multiple tabs up and went looking for the Jingles one. Thought I'd accidentally started it.
I had jingles flashbacks
I don't care what anyone says, Aygos and C1s are rad little cars. My mate used to have one and even the standard car was fun to rag about B roads. You could hold it at rev limiter and eventually it'd start popping and banging like all the cool kids and it's throw the odd flame from the exhaust too. Such a funny little car, i'd love to race one.
And this is the Reason why you guys rock! Top notch build quality, no matter the budget. Super entertaining videos, and projects like these are a bit like a flashback to the beginning of everyone' s automotive journey. And it's a pretty cool way to get people into motorsports. You Sirs are Legends!

Brilliant. Reminds me of when I built my own cheap rally car back in 2007 - especially the cage being a PITA to fit and needing 'help' to get the main loop to the right width. Love it.
So glad you chaps are back, that I instantly pressed "replay" when the episode was over. 😊
I can imagine how depressed and saddened you were when you found that the kit came with its own brackets. I feel so sorry for you.

Poor Nick, I don’t know how he survived having to use pre made brackets
Maybe he made his own exact replicas, so only he (and maybe Rich) will ever know
Hah! I know something you boys don't for once! (A very rare occasion indeed)
To get the clip off that style of window window winder use a cloth. Wiggle it in until it catches one of the prongs of the hooks and pull in a line, pops it out easy and fast.
I figure it's the least I can do to give you that little nugget of info for all the education and inspiration you've delivered me over the years. I still owe you more than a few though.
It was absolutely excellent to hear y'alls voices again in another great video. EVEN got to hear "make the noise..." love it.
PROJECT BINKY!!!
The lads are back! Yee-haa!!
And you're back from the dead! Spooky! (Yes, I know he was Graham with an H, but I have to get my gags where i can.)
It's like the anti-Binky... and yet somehow it works and I love it. Looking forward to next week chaps!
When does Nick decide to fit the engine from a 406 V6?😂
Another great project from you guys.
You can! On the bigger 106.
next week. Should be just a one episode job...
Zero chance of fitting that. Lots of adapters to make up too.
If you want a big engine you can fit the 1.8vvc engine from the Yaris (if you relocate the battery to the boot).
But at that point you should probably just buy a Yaris SR as they are pretty cheap anyway.
It’s probably been mentioned in a previous comment, but if you string a rag behind the window crank and work it back and forth it gets those clips off hassle free. Great work as always, gents.
You are the epitome of automobile tech nerds. You’re the best of all time.
Who else heard that intro music and wondered if The Mighty Jingles was involved? :)
I was like "What, they are building a tank?"

Great to see you guys, it always puts a smile on my face seeing your videos in my feed.
There's a trick with a rag to get the window winder clips out works mint!
It’s all the little things that add up to a “clean” build.
Does it matter if there’s an adel clamp on the lock button rod? Well no, but isn’t it so much nicer with one?
Edit: And you know what? It does matter. When a tech inspector is looking over a car and sees that attention was paid to such a seemingly insignificant detail, their impression will likely be that attention was equally paid to the things that *are* important.
Yes, the famous "Brown M&M gambit" made popular by Van Halen.

Useful tip for those annoying window winder clips. The hub end of a bicycle spoke has a handy little hooked end to it. Subject to a little bit of “jiggling it about a bit” you can usually pull the clip off that way!! I got a wheel’s worth in my tool box. They’re just bendy enough to come in rather handy.

Where you're struggling with removing the window winder handle clip it's really easy with the special tool. just pull a rag around between the handle and card and the clip pops right out. Good video as usual, Keep it up lads
Top Tip for you, dropping the hub carrier off the strut can be aided but inserting a snug fitting allen/hex key into the clamp slot and turning it 60 degrees, this will splay the joint open by a useful amount.

We used to call those windows clips "Jesus Clips" because when you pop 'em loose they shoot of any you say "jesus! where'd it go??"
I learned a trick about 15 years ago ... you use a rag between the door card and handle... almost as tho you were trying to clean in that little nook, and the clip pops of like you wouldn't believe... usually gets partly snagged in the rag do it does't go flying at all.
Our generic term for such things is "pingfukits"... ;-)
"Brute force and ignorance" My father says that all. the. time. :D
does that mean your father is Big Clive (of bigclive dot com fame) ?
It’s often shortened to just “B F and I” here in the colonies.
I first heard it as an apprentice mechanic in a Rory Gallagher song ... I still use "B F n I" on the regular here in Oz.
We used to call it the B'FASI technique-brute force and sheer ignorance (often involving angle grinders and when really stuck we brought out the gas axe…)
BOM the content was always great but now the production qualities are really stepping up to a new level. Keep up the great work and I look forward to this series which might end with a vehicle in the road...
Much love from the US, you blokes are making me homesick for the UK

I'm not sure if i can wait 10 years to find out how lol
10:04 the easiest way to undo is jank a thin piece of cloth between the doorpanel and the handle. Then simply hold the cloth upwards or downwards, and crank the handle. In a rotation or two, the cloth will catch onto this clip and will come loose. This is a trick i've learned from a daihatsu garage ;-)
