I'm 62 and when I heard Deep Purple Child in Time in 1971 it changed how I looked at music. It was beautiful, haunting and so damn different. That being said I went on a quest with out my parents approval to see them as many times as I could . And back in the day after Child they would sometimes play this so Ian could rest his voice.

Ritchie Blackmore is an improvisation master. He is my favorite guitarist, whether it is with Deep Purple, Rainbow, or Blackmore's Night. Ritchie has some great instrumentals with Rainbow. "Weiss Heim", "Snowman" and "Carry on Jon" are great instrumentals worth reviewing. Or even the Rainbow live version of "16th Century Greensleeves", he plays a classical solo of Greensleeves before he takes it to beast level with the actual song. His talent is so good.

I’m a huge DP fan & ashamed to say this is the first time I’ve heard this .. Holy Crap!!! It was massive.. blues, metal, hard rock, classical all in one song, 10 minutes went past in a minute… I know Blackmore could be a pain in the butt.. but you can’t fault his brilliance on the guitar.

Yeah this is from their second album The Book of Taliesyn. Their first three albums are in a different style to what people now consider 'Classic Purple' (think progressive pop rock rather than heavy rock) but they're still very good and well worth a listen 😊

In the early 70's, performances longer than 10 minutes were not so unusual in rock scene.
People enjoy watching virtuosos musicians doing their thing.
Deep Purple is a band that never play their songs as recorded on studio; they felt very confortable on stage, and very forced and unconfortable in the studio, so this is not the exception, the guys enjoyed it very much..
WRING THAT NECK is a track from their second album called "The Book Of Taliesyn" recorded by the Mark I line-up, that included Rod Evans on vocals and Nick Simper on bass, but in 1969 they replaced them with IAN GILLAN on vocals and ROGER GLOVER on bass, plus the founder members JON LORD on keyboards, RITCHIE BLACKMORE on guitar and IAN PAICE on drums, they found the perfect match to grow up to a global status level, this is known as the mythical DEEP PURPLE MARK II.
This performance is from 1970, and at that time, Mark II only had recorded an album titled DEEP PURPLE IN ROCK with only 7 tracks, so they still play on stage material from the Mark I era. (after all Mark I had released 3 albums in more than a year, so they still have material in stock to perform).
They had more pieces where, in live performances, instrumental parts last and last... with lots of improvisations passages from the organ and the guitar, such as MANDRAKE ROOT (from their 1st album SHADES OF DEEP PURPLE), I recommend you to react to (here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/8tZhoENQz_k/v-deo.html ) it has a furious vocal part in the beginning, then goes the instrumental part up to the end.
As you have already reacted to CHILD IN TIME (from DP IN ROCK), you can imagine how savage, jazzy, improvisational and classical mix they made, showing clearly what kind of musicians they were at that time, real masters of every instrument, not any other hippies or high school friends band; as I've told before, they were looking for the best, and they achieved it.
Thanks for sharing your reaction. I like the way you are so direct about what you like and what you don't, and I really like how you enjoy Deep Purple music. It's a pleasure to count you as an admirer of my favorite band.
I hope someday you will be willing to react to MARK III line up of Deep Purple with David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass, and also to react to more recent live performances from MARK VI, MARK VII and MARK VIII, they are still on tour and so powerful and great as always.
Cheers my friend, see you soon

  • @ScienceTalkwithJimMassa

Keep in mind Rebeka this performance was heavily edited. Purple would play Wring That Neck for around 30 minutes with massive jams, Ritchie and Jon swapping runs, Jon with an extended keyboard solo and of course Ritchie with his extended solo.
In this clip, Ritchie Blackmore demonstrates in 10 minutes why he is the best ever. He realizes more in these 10 minutes than many players realize in a lifetime. Plays blues, classical, rock, jazz, plays with feelings and burns up the fretboard and demonstrates some amazing techniques. Blackmore influenced thousands of guitarists.
I am glad you gave a shoutout to the bass (Roger Glover) and the keyboards (the late great Jon Lord). Ian Paice on drums along with Roger on bass formed a superb rhythm section.

I made a mental note on official video’s. So if you go on to the next song off of this concert footage, it definitely features some awesome vocals from Ian Gillian. And he even plays the bongo’s. Then the pure talent of Jon Lord on keyboards shines on his incredible solo on this song. I’ve been listening to Deep Purple for over 40 years. This is gold. First time for me seeing this.

Not too shabby indeed. But I suspect a large section was edited out of this clip at some point, because when they played this piece live, they usually included an extended organ solo which was just as long and ambitious and interesting as the gutiar section. You can find several other clips online which bear this out. Excellent reaction, regardless.

You give another song of theirs a go: Hard Lovin' Man. It might be their heaviest song.
An interest thing about this video is that it might be first time I noticed Roger Glover, the bass player, using fingerstyle instead of a pick.
