1960 Scott-McCulloch 12/14hp Outboard Motor Lake Test "Scotty-Macenstein"

  • CORRECTION: In the video I mistakenly said the powerhead was also from.the 12hp. It is not! It has the 14.1hp McCulloch powerhead on it now.
    Bought a 12hp Scotty-Mac with what I hoped was a good gearcase to replace a bad one on a McCulloch 14hp that had been sitting for several years. Ended up liking the Scott 12 and transplanting the 14.1 steering bracket, transom clamp, and powerhead onto the 12 Scott. Turned out to be a great motor.

    Your vid came up on my feed this morning and caught my eye.
    I had a Scott 12 HP engine as a 11 year old kid back in the mid-1960’s. My dad had it rebuilt.
    The Scott was attached to my little 8’ long hydroplane. Me and the boat came in at probably under 100 lbs.
    The Scott pushed the boat at amazing speed. I’d be embarrassed to admit some of the stunts I did at the time.
    Thanks for the fond memories!

I'm still holding out hope that I might get one more time out before everything gets stored for the winter months. I hear you about the wind. For the past few years, it seems like the wind blows almost all the time when the weather is otherwise nice. It's a sad time when boating season winds down to a close. That said, it is a time to get other projects done and work on other hobbies too. I'm very glad to have saved this one. Hopefully I can save a second one out of the three I'm working on now. These are one outboard that actually did get down here in Australia 🇦🇺, however, they were very rare. Johnson, evinrude, and mercs were pretty much it. Chryslers were around but nowhere near as popular. I remember dad telling me that they were a chainsaw manufacturer, but they were a pretty good little outboard. Best wishes.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404

      Yes, McCulloch did make a lot of chainsaws. They did make some updates and changes to the original Scott-Atwater designs which I like quite a bit. Nothing wrong with the older Scott-Atwater motors either. I'm just not a far of the high mounted water pump in the original Bail-A-Matic design. The McCulloch design changed the water pump and put it back low in the leg while maintaining the bailer function, which frankly was no longer very useful by the time it originally came to market anyway. They're great runners, though. Thanks for watching!

    Would you have any idea what would cause a 1961 5.5 hp Evinrude to lack vacuum to pull fuel into the cylinders. The compression on both cylinders are 85 to 90 psi. I removed the powerhead and when I pulled the starter rope while it was sitting flat on a plate, it fired and tried to start for the first time. When I hold my hand over the carburetor intake there is no vacuum whatsoever. I replaced the gasket between the powerhead and lower unit, but still have the same issue. The O-ring in the crank case seal had two cracks in it and the gasket above the washer appears to be bad so I was going to replace that. Do you think it could be the cause of lack of vacuum to draw fuel into the cylinders?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  2 місяці тому

      @blaine_yousan if your engine is not drawing any fuel through the carburetor, I would suspect you have reed valve or reed valves stuck, bent, obstructed, or broken. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

    • @blaine_yousan
      @blaine_yousan 2 місяці тому

      Thanks. I pulled the reed plate, shined a strong flashlight from under to see how much light would come through the reeds. Barely a thin visible sliver could be seen after removing and wiping down the reeds and polishing the plate on a flat granite plate with 600 grit lubricated wet/dry paper then cleaned and reassembled. I will be replacing the lower crankcase seal gasket and o-ring under the powerhead since I saw fuel leak down to the foot cavitation plate. I’m hoping that may cause some loss of vacuum.

    How's the hole-shot on that 14? I find my Scott (Firestone) to have less torque on accel than my OMC and West Bend stuff.. top end seems similar. Maybe it's the gearcase gearing?

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  4 місяці тому +1

      The holeshot is actually pretty good on this motor. I'd say it's every bit as strong out of the hole as my Elgin 12 if not slightly better. It does seem to unwind a little lo ger at the top end than an OMC 10 or 50s 15hp. I really couldn't be happier with how this motor turned out after all the work I put into it. I enjoy running this one quite a bit. I run remote controls a lot these days, but when I run a tiller, I'll be tempted to grab this one and run it. I also have a '62 Wizard (Scotty-Mac) that is a real screamer. Same 14.1hp McCulloch power as this one. It really rips too for what it is. I'm curious to try swapping props around. The bronze Michigan Wheel prop on this motor looks like it has a homebrew cup job on the blades. I'm not sure that did anything for performance other than slow the RPMs down at WOT. I just bought a NOS Michigan Wheel aluminum prop for the also. 8.25x8.5P that I am looking forward to trying out. Thanks for watching, Trevor!

It seems I saw a service bulletin that was put out by McCulloch at some point in the early '60s that said 20:1 with SAE30 and 40:1 with TCW grade outboard oil. I do not know if that included the smaller motors or not. These motors still do not have roller bearings on the wristpins, so I don't plan to scrimp on oil.
