      +Tim Balch I think he has to do it to focus on all the offbeats with his feet, but none the less I laughed really hard at this.

      Underrated as hell if you ask me.
      Both "Swarm" and "Marrow" happen to be the best songs in *Koloss* yet get to be the most underappreciated of all.

    He looks so relaxed and channels the 4/4 so effortlessly, that it's easy to think this music isn't as complicated as it is. Super heavy, gritty, funky, metal.

  • @sufddd
    @sufddd 9 років тому +43

    Damn ... appreciate the skill needed to make your left foot go in a totally different pattern than your right one. While playing ghost notes on such an off-beat riff. While making it look so effortless. Wow This guys is a damn beast

  • @TheDave000
    @TheDave000 8 років тому +76

    I would love to know what goes through his head as he plays this stuff. There is no way you can "remember" parts this complex, I think he just sees patterns in the universe and his muscle memory is so advanced he just turns these patterns into music subconsciously.
    Whilst playing what is to my ears some of the most aggressive music man has ever created, I would wager he is actually in a mediative state, full of serenity on a higher plane of existence.
    He is without question on the greatest drummers who ever lived.

    • @gabecomstock7251
      @gabecomstock7251 Рік тому +8

      He seems like he's in flow state every time he plays. He's so in the zone he doesn't need to think hard about what he's doing, he just does it. Absolutele legend.

    I don't know why, but as soon as the song starts at 00:03 and the description of the kit appears, it looked that it was describing some kind of cyborg. Which I think Tomas is.
    I laughed.
    Then I cried.
    Now I'm scratching my balls and joining the groove at 01:09 with my head to the left and right.

    A proper drummer, using Hi hat foot and ghost strokes - real 4 way co-ordination. I teach so many Metal guys who just don't bother learning how to play the Hi Hat with the left foot. Tomas, you are the real deal! In the main theme he's playing in 7/8 but his Hi Hat foot is playing quarters straight through, sort of like what Vinnie Colaiuta does with Sting.

      @robertoricci3393 8 років тому +17

    • @ThaTruth223
      @ThaTruth223 8 років тому +5

      idk bout portnoy being overrated,and mangini could play portnoy a stuff fill for fill but can't write anything better than portnoy.
      Lang is easily one of my favorites,dude is super powerful

    • @robertoricci3393
      @robertoricci3393 8 років тому +3

      +ThaTruth223 I never understood what Portnoy did so important as a composer like many of his fans say. He has always been a co-writer, so I don't know if he can write a good song by himself. If you're talking about the drum parts, well, i never liked them so much. His solos lack of groove and phrasing, only random strokes at random speed all over the kit. I mean Portnoy is a good drummer and I like DT but he never was a favourite of mine.

    • @rastabg23
      @rastabg23 8 років тому +11

      Carey isn't entirely human when he is performing, he has secrets that he doesn't tell anybody. I can assure you he isn't alone on those drums.

    • @ThaTruth223
      @ThaTruth223 8 років тому

      well the last DT album is an exact example on how important portnoy was in the writing process.
      his play is legendary and he was with out a doubt half if not 60% of the brain in DT.hes technically efficient,his improvition is incredible,he much like hakke/carey are surgeons behind the kit

But he swings and grooves even when playing in 23/16 with his right foot, 12/16 with his left, and 4/4 with his hands. How can a human do that!?

    I'm always impressed by how disconnected his limbs are from each other. Even of I would be able to play his Songs that good (I learned some, but it's always a blast to see him nail what I'm struggling to do so easy), I'm always almost falling off my chair

    It fits the style of music and fits the track in context. I've played hundreds of pieces where I've had to hit a chunk of wood and I can say that his bass drum sounds nothing like hitting a piece of wood.
