Whilst playing what is to my ears some of the most aggressive music man has ever created, I would wager he is actually in a mediative state, full of serenity on a higher plane of existence. He is without question on the greatest drummers who ever lived.

well the last DT album is an exact example on how important portnoy was in the writing process. his play is legendary and he was with out a doubt half if not 60% of the brain in DT.hes technically efficient,his improvition is incredible,he much like hakke/carey are surgeons behind the kit
The thing I think is so great about Haake is most great metal drummers are so locked in, ahead of the beat, pushing, precise to a fault. And that’s amazing. But he swings and grooves even when playing in 23/16 with his right foot, 12/16 with his left, and 4/4 with his hands. How can a human do that!?
I'm always impressed by how disconnected his limbs are from each other. Even of I would be able to play his Songs that good (I learned some, but it's always a blast to see him nail what I'm struggling to do so easy), I'm always almost falling off my chair
It fits the style of music and fits the track in context. I've played hundreds of pieces where I've had to hit a chunk of wood and I can say that his bass drum sounds nothing like hitting a piece of wood.

I use only one tom (Floor), two when I'm playing more melodic stuff like Classical rock tunes.
