Just in time to crown a hard week of sad memories. Dad, brother and nephew gone in two years yet my brother's birthday a week ago makes me too sad. Thx Peter.
That line always gets me. And the part directly afterwards, when Aragorn breaks into tears, lays Boromir's sword on his chest and kisses his forehead. Every time I'm crying, even though I've seen it a hundred times.
My teenage daughter passed last month after fighting cancer since she was 11. Near the end, I couldn't hold her because it hurt her too much. I am sobbing while listening to this song. How I look forward to one day holding her in my arms again, watching her sleep peacefully. Oh, my baby! These are some of the most beautiful words in all of fantasy. I love the mental picture "the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

An absolutely terrific comment regarding Peter and this song. You're so spot on, I hope Jesus reads your comment; maybe put it in the form of a prayer. I would love to listen to Peter in heaven.
I just lost my mom this last Wednesday and this song brings me and my family to tears, I love this song and this is a beautiful rendition. I appreciate all the work you do.
I wasn't quite sure what song this was but it said LOTR so I hit play. Then when I heard the chorus.....my geek started showing!!! I remember working early at Wal-Mart one morning and that song started playing on Wal-Mart radio....and I said to one of my coworkers, "I know this song, but how? (And then it hit me) "OMG! That's from the LOTR! They play it on the end credits!!!!" I started jumping up and down, and my coworker just shook her head...lol So thankyou for reminding me of that little memory and keep up the good work! You have a wonderful voice!
This song in any form has always been my hands-down favorite ballad from any work or re-imagining of a work by Tolkien. This gave me so many goosebumps.
My mum found you singing this on UA-cam and chose it to be played at her funeral, she passed in September, and we played this for her. It was beautiful
I just learned that my husband is being deployed to Afganistan for nine months, and I was drawn to listen to this song. I know it's not the same, and thank the heavens he's coming back, but the feeling of hopeful longing, of knowing I will see him again, makes me feel better, even while crying. So thank you Peter for your beautiful rendition of this song. It gives me some peace in my chaotic head.
This song has always touched my heart; the only song to make me cry each time I listen to it. Annie Lennox did an astounding job, but Peter you have built it up even more. Bless you Peter Hollens for sharing your amazing talent with the world!
I am here in front of my computer watching and listening you sing. Again the color make you so alive thru the screen. My two little dogs are listening and sleeping.
This song is more than just the journey that souls take to the West. This song represents Tolkien and his beliefs, he made these books containing the religions of the world. I couldn't think of a better song to represent Mr. Tolkien. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Peter Hollens, for bringing this song to life in a way that undoubtedly would please Mr. Tolkien.
If so, it is ironic since Tolkien himself admitted that The Lord of the Rings was inspired and informed by his deep Catholic faith. Tolkien's genius was that he wrote it in such a way that it speaks to people of all faiths and none.
I'm home sick today so no singing. I am feeling really yucky, so papa sang along with this song to help. He has a very deep bass voice and sang a few counterpoint harmonies to Mr. Holland's melody. It was amazing. I wish he would let me record it! Thank you, Mr. Holland
Peter, I cannot write down with words how great this is. Your cover inspired me to finally begin to write my book that has been in my mind for years. Thank you!
Very beautiful :) This makes me think of 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith". I only pray I hear Christ say "well done good and faithful servant" though I know in my heart I am unworthy
which makes absolutely no sense. In the Hobbit, the story of the Dwarves is intended as a metaphor for Israel in the Old Testament. Thorin is meant to resemble the expected King David, or warrior king, that would free the chosen people. However, the LOTR uses sort of two examples of a Messiah. Where Froddo appears to be playing the Christ who carried the sins of humanity, Aragorn appears to be playing the role of the warrior Jesus from Revelation. I could go on, but Tolkien was clearly representing scripture through both the Hobbit and LOTR.
For those who want to song along with him: Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? I was able to sing it perfectly by knowing the bones of the original, knowing Peter's voice well, and using the closed captions. I appreciate your efforts to share the lyrics though. It shows that you cared enough to copy/paste for others to see. :)
Sometimes I come back here and remember the people I used to know 9 years ago when I discovered this channel and just before I started uni. The memories of the mistakes I made hurt and I still think about you now, even though you're long out of my life and have probably forgotten all about me. But as bittersweet as this version of the song is for me, it's just so beautiful
Absolutely the BEST version of this song I have ever heard. Pete does this song like nobody can!!! His voice is so great; he's a particular favorite of mine. Kudos Pete. I never tire of this song because you made it your own.
I played this song as a tribute to my Grandmother last year when she passed away. I had not seen her or home for 4 years after joining the Marine Corps. I was making plans to see her when I got the news. I have broken bones, separated my shoulder, and puked blood in training and sports and never cried for any of those things....but playing this song took all of my strength not to burst into tears on my camera. I had hoped she was going to be able to be see my wife and I get married, but due to her health she said she would only be able to be there in spirit, and I can tell you that I know she was there with us. I love you Gram, and one day the ships will call me home and I will see you again.
I heard you sing this song years ago because of my love for lord of the rings. But today it hits differently because weeks ago I had to make the hardest decision in my life and sign a DNR for my son. I pray to meet him again someday; this song gives me hope that I just might.
Just heard this on my playlist and decided to look it up on youtube and see what others thought of it and I found myself here, listening to this and being blown away to the brink of tears. You sir have earned yourself my respect and my subscription.
Beautiful song, masterfully interpreted. So touching, and yes, it does bring comfort to those that mourn. I lost my sweetheart and Army veteran 19 years ago. He left me with the greatest gift that has helped me get through all these years--our six great kids. But this song touches on that yearning that still lasts all these years later. Thank you so much for sharing your talents. So comforting and I'm not even familiar with LOTR!
Its probably because this songs calls to anyone who had lost a loved one at some point in their lives! Its the most beautiful metaphor of deatht that I have ever heard. Even if you're not a fan of LOTR you can't help but be moved by those lyrics! :)
If only tunes were put to all the songs in Tolkien's books. Mr. Hollens is the perfect man to sing all of those songs. Mr. Hollens, you have an amazing voice! Keep on keeping on, and God bless!
I confess I was a little skeptical about this. Annie Lennox voice is amazing and this song means so much to me! But I loved it! It actually matched your voice really well, just like Misty Mountains! Love you, Peter! Keep up the good work!
No words... just tears. I lost my precious son almost a year ago. Though I know I will see him again one day, your music brought me a much-needed release. Thank you.
Do not worry my greatest love, although my mind and body will be gone my soul will live with you forever. Clear the tears from your eyes maybe in a time far away from now our spirits will meet again. time is our loves only obsticle, but for now our journey has come to an end goodbye and I will always love you
One of my grandmas passed away in January of 2008. We had lost my grandpa just a little over 4 years before. Even though my mind, and my heart revolve around music, I have no talent for it, vocal, or instrument, though I did play clarinet for 8 years. I wanted to speak at her funeral, to help honor her memory as one of the best people I've ever known in my life. So since I can't see worth a darned, I recited the lyrics to this song. Every time I hear, or think about it, I think of my grandma. This song is special to me. I have never heard a version of it that wasn't Annie Lennox's original from the Return of the King soundtrack, until yours! Thank you for doing the song justice, and honoring it's meaning, and the healing it brings to us all! I see a lot of other people who have commented on this video have had similar stories, and I know we all thank you soooo much!!
Stunning, stunning, stunning. Epic and gorgeous production, visually, musically...a handsome man with an astounding voice sings 'Into The West'. Pure a cappella...there is none better.
(please don't hate me atheists) God created the human voice and made the most perfect instrument i think that this kind of music will be a constant in Heaven, its so blissful and relaxing while still being upbeat and joyful.
Dear Mr. Hollens, From the way you interact with fans, to the passion that is so evident in your work, you are inspiring, I have found myself being pulled out of a rut on more than one occasion thanks to your covers. Thank you so much, for making music as it should be, inspiring, enlightening, and full of heart. Thank you Sincerely, Joel Reyes
I have never left a comment in the years I've been using your voice for therapy, so here is my super delayed "Thank you!" for sharing this with the world.
Absolutely fabulous, Peter. You have such an amazing voice. Along with the production values, location and cinematography, you created another great video.
Great song. LOTR is possibly the best book/movie/video game series ever, even though Tolkien's explanation of how it was actually Earth many, many years ago boggles my mind.
I did not know that. Though that may be something to do with the fact I could never read Tolkien...amazingly written but the style isn't something I can read unfortunately. I respect the author a lot though. He created something immortal.
That was actually quite a common technique among fantasy authors around that time - the author of the Conan books had a similar approach. The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.
Harriet Richards It also boggles my mind how similar his works are to the Christian Bible. But, then again, he was Christian, and a close friend of C.S. Lewis. So it's not really surprising.
I believe this song is in the end credits of the last movie. I don't think Tolkien wrote the lyrics. Tolkien's works have some similarities with the Bible, which obviously isn't surprising seeing as he was Catholic, but there's a strong pagan influence as well (primarily Germanic), and there's also a great deal of originality in them.
Watching the end of life of one of the most amazing people I've been blessed to call family, and the line that hits the most is "don't say we've come now to the end,...you and I will meet again"
Holy cow! I don't remember this song from the films, but WOW! I can definitely see that you are a married man, Mr Hollens; I don't think an unmarried man could put that much passion into that song.
You dont need to be married to have a lot of passion into a song LOL I'm sure a lot of people can sing this with tons of passion and are not married :0
Austin Harris I didn't say _a song_; I said _THIS_ song. I consider this a song a man would sing to his wife, or to the woman he thinks about as a wife.
Austin Harris Further reflection and consulting the lyrics indicates that it may not actually refer to that, but that is what talking about "sleeping safe in my arms" says to me.
I have been brought to tears by you, now for the third time. While music is insanely important to me, it takes real talent to move me to such emotions. You have done this many times before. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was the first book I ever read and understood. I was four. There are so many amazing memories tied to that series, along with The Hobbit. Thank you, Mr. Hollens. Thank you for making my already wonderful memories that much more amazing. Please don't stop making music like this. ♥
This song reminds me so much of my 2yr old son who now resides with his Lord. I can't believe it's been 2 years since you left us, baby boy. One day Daddy and Mummy will see you again and hold you in an eternal embrace. Until then, fly high my sweet angel.
I've listened to this song just over a thousand times in the last year. It is still the single most beautiful song I've heard, and it gives me chills every time. Thank you for making it.
I completely agree, brings a tear to this old hellions eyes. I played his song for my father at his his Funeral " Last Good Bye " thus young man is absolutely the BEST vocalist of ALL time. Much love and respect 🙏
My choir teacher taught this song to us and he sadly passed away last October and we sang this at his funeral and I cried because he was a fantastic teacher and left a large impact on me and the choir. He was my mentor and a father figure to me
Samuel C. Lim added it to a playlist that has this song and video. should I add a playlist spicificly for Pippin's "the last goodbye?" I'd be willing to do so if it would help.

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West

An absolutely terrific comment regarding Peter and this song. You're so spot on, I hope Jesus reads your comment; maybe put it in the form of a prayer. I would love to listen to Peter in heaven.
I just lost my mom this last Wednesday and this song brings me and my family to tears, I love this song and this is a beautiful rendition. I appreciate all the work you do.
Oh, sending you so much love. 💔 I'm honored this song brings comfort. Wishing you strength and peace, my friend. 🙏🏼
For all it's worth from a stranger on the internet: I wish you only the best and hope your pain eases soon🙏🏾
They play it on the end credits!!!!" I started jumping up and down, and my coworker just shook her head...lol
So thankyou for reminding me of that little memory and keep up the good work! You have a wonderful voice!
What a wonderful man. I love his singing, and song Selections. This song makes me almost want to cry....
This song in any form has always been my hands-down favorite ballad from any work or re-imagining of a work by Tolkien. This gave me so many goosebumps.
One of my favorites in any context!
And I thought "May it Be" was good. Into the West is just in a class all its own.
I always cry when I hear this song. It has an spiritual connection to me.
Me too. I always cry and cry when I hear this.
I can't help but fight back tears when I hear this. ;)
I love how he calls us his family. We mean that much to him. Good job Peter Hollens!!!!!!!!
this song and Shenandoah were the original two songs that really cemented you as my favorite artist
I sang along to this song. It made me cry :'(
Honestly, Peter, this rendition brings me to tears as well. Thank you.
This is potentially the most beautiful thing I've ever heard and I can't stop listening to it 😢
This song is more than just the journey that souls take to the West. This song represents Tolkien and his beliefs, he made these books containing the religions of the world. I couldn't think of a better song to represent Mr. Tolkien. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Peter Hollens, for bringing this song to life in a way that undoubtedly would please Mr. Tolkien.
He's book indeed was made for all religion pagan and abrahamic
If so, it is ironic since Tolkien himself admitted that The Lord of the Rings was inspired and informed by his deep Catholic faith. Tolkien's genius was that he wrote it in such a way that it speaks to people of all faiths and none.
I just...I can't...this song makes me cry so much and you just made it so powerful...I love it. Thank you Peter.
Thank you!
Good luck, and may the words on the page capture the world in your mind.
Endilbiach Thank you! :)
Bettina K. Not that I have much to go on besides your avatar/profile pic, but you dear are gorgeous, and with such a cute smirk too.
Bettina K. Good luck! :)
Bettina K. I wish you good luck with your novel! Do let us know what hen you are finished with it. :)
Very beautiful :) This makes me think of 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith". I only pray I hear Christ say "well done good and faithful servant" though I know in my heart I am unworthy
Funnily enough, some sects of Christianity view LOTR as Satan worship.
which makes absolutely no sense.
Kaepora Gaebora boo, religious person, you're boring
Stefan Larsen Boo person who thinks that saw a religious comment and decided to be a troll about it
Kaepora Gaebora And don't forget about gandalf being ressurected, also a christian element
For those who want to song along with him:
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
I accidently found Peter Hollens on facebook. He has such a unique voice. I have never been introduced to cappella singing. I am glad I found it now.
I can't sing this song without crying.
you give me chill man...really! greetings from Italy
Just heard this on my playlist and decided to look it up on youtube and see what others thought of it and I found myself here, listening to this and being blown away to the brink of tears. You sir have earned yourself my respect and my subscription.
Me too! Maximum goosebumps
I listened to this song 270 times and counting in the past week!
Chills on the first note. Chills on the last. This is perfect. Peter, don't ever stop singing. You are so incredible.
May he find peace in the undying lands
If only tunes were put to all the songs in Tolkien's books. Mr. Hollens is the perfect man to sing all of those songs. Mr. Hollens, you have an amazing voice! Keep on keeping on, and God bless!
Whenever the grey rain-curtain of this world feels like rolling back, I'm ready.
The way you wove that Tolkien magic into your comment literally gave me chills!🌟
Grot my friend.oriki
I confess I was a little skeptical about this. Annie Lennox voice is amazing and this song means so much to me! But I loved it! It actually matched your voice really well, just like Misty Mountains! Love you, Peter! Keep up the good work!
No words... just tears. I lost my precious son almost a year ago. Though I know I will see him again one day, your music brought me a much-needed release. Thank you.
🙏🕊✨
Could make a video of Gollems/Smeagols theme. That has to be my favorite music in The Lord of the Rings.
Yea, the Gollum's Song! (the credit song of TTT)
Them chills though :3
Again, outdone yourself Peter. Keep up the outstanding work buddy!
Absolutely, CHILLS!!!!
I used this song for one of my family members, my Grandpa Ives, who had died. Love this song/also makes me think of the late C. D. Reece (RIP).
Everything he does is a masterpiece.
(please don't hate me atheists) God created the human voice and made the most perfect instrument i think that this kind of music will be a constant in Heaven, its so blissful and relaxing while still being upbeat and joyful.
I haven't cried this much since I finished TFIOS. Beautiful, just beautiful. 😭
I'm hoping that someday he'll be able to cover Ed Sheeran's "All the Stars," written for the credits of TFIOS. =)
***** He's already covered "I See Fire" though...and besides, "All the Stars" has a message that means more to me than "I See Fire."
TO bad TFIOS is one of the worst movies ever made, plus one of the most cliche books ever written
DFILONO mm. No. I think it's one of the most beautiful books ever written, and the movie is perfect. So please leave
Jonny Setzler opinions lol
I'll never think of Lord of the Ring or The Hobbit the same way again. Your voice is like an angel's.
Oh how I want this song to be played on the day I take my last breath.
same
I listen to it everyday, so theres a pretty big chance it will
I want it to be played at my funeral
Same! But as much as I love Peter's work, it has to be Annie Lennox's version.
I made it through the whole song, but reading this comment got me. What a beautiful send-off to have!
This feels so comforting, partly because I heard it so many times over the years, but mostly because it’s so well sung Peter. 😃
Dear Mr. Hollens,
From the way you interact with fans, to the passion that is so evident in your work, you are inspiring, I have found myself being pulled out of a rut on more than one occasion thanks to your covers. Thank you so much, for making music as it should be, inspiring, enlightening, and full of heart. Thank you
Sincerely, Joel Reyes
I have never left a comment in the years I've been using your voice for therapy, so here is my super delayed "Thank you!" for sharing this with the world.
Rest in Peace Bilbo. See you on the Far Shore.
Absolutely fabulous, Peter. You have such an amazing voice. Along with the production values, location and cinematography, you created another great video.
absolutely magnificent voice Terri Nakamura
Very good .. yet again :-)
***** Sizar, ***** is amazing. Did you see my note about your photo?
Hein Kuenen Hi, Hein and wishing you well!
Terri Nakamura no not yet my friend ... Today I had surgery and I just got out the hospital and thank God I'm fine :)
The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.
the books are kinda hard to understand
It was the last song but not everyone watches the Films till the end ;) watch it again ;)
It was in the final film at the very end in the credits
You dont need to be married to have a lot of passion into a song LOL I'm sure a lot of people can sing this with tons of passion and are not married :0
Austin Harris I didn't say _a song_; I said _THIS_ song. I consider this a song a man would sing to his wife, or to the woman he thinks about as a wife.
Austin Harris
Further reflection and consulting the lyrics indicates that it may not actually refer to that, but that is what talking about "sleeping safe in my arms" says to me.
All this time later and this is still one of the best covers of this song
Amazing
This song reminds me so much of my 2yr old son who now resides with his Lord. I can't believe it's been 2 years since you left us, baby boy. One day Daddy and Mummy will see you again and hold you in an eternal embrace. Until then, fly high my sweet angel.
I've listened to this song just over a thousand times in the last year. It is still the single most beautiful song I've heard, and it gives me chills every time. Thank you for making it.
I thought I left the window open, but appears the chills are coming from your singing. Incredible!
Dude, Peter, this is awesome. Gave me chills, bro!
Thanks dude!!! :)
49 secs into the vid and experiencing these "chills" you speak of
This is the first song I heard from Peter.
Subscribed!
I completely agree, brings a tear to this old hellions eyes. I played his song for my father at his his Funeral " Last Good Bye " thus young man is absolutely the BEST vocalist of ALL time.
Much love and respect 🙏
Chill every time I listen to it.
My choir teacher taught this song to us and he sadly passed away last October and we sang this at his funeral and I cried because he was a fantastic teacher and left a large impact on me and the choir. He was my mentor and a father figure to me
The absolute best rendition of this song...
Please do pippin's " the last goodbye". It's amazing!
yes billy boyd's
good
Samuel C.E. Lim very good. i cant listen to it because i'll cry.
shhh...he did it
Samuel C. Lim added it to a playlist that has this song and video. should I add a playlist spicificly for Pippin's "the last goodbye?" I'd be willing to do so if it would help.
I cant tell whether I am getting chills from your singing or from the song. This song+your voice=AWESOME
My mom passed away after her long fight against cancer this last Sunday and this song is going to be sung at her funeral tomorrow. Thank you Peter, for such a beautiful rendition of this song.
I want this version of this song played at my funeral, it's just... perfect.
