This is easily my favorite M&P song. The groove, the back and forth between the vocals, the risquee (for the time) lyrics... Such a great song. I love that they're actually singing this live as opposed to with a track, they were all so talented.
Now this is music. No tricks, no lights, no synthesizers, no bull shit. Just plain ole great fucking music that our children today have no respect for.
Brings back so many good times from the '60's........so much better than today. The best of rock, blues and soul music pervaded the era with good feelings and that anything good was possible if people worked together on it. When I even smell incense now, it brings it all back. Peace Brother!
My parents introduced me to this beautiful era of music and I bet if all the wonderful singers of this generation were still alive, they would still be belting out their tunes 💜
Never realized how pretty she was until I had a dream where she kissed me as I sang this song (but with the line changed to "and no one's gettin' as much cash as Mama Cass.")
Too bad they didn't stay together longer. Between John Phillips songwriting & the beautiful voice of Cass Elliot they were bound for success. They made such great music that will continue to be listened to for years to come.
Did live in the sixties as a kid, but love them so much. The harmonies are just awesome. All could sing well, but if Mama Cass was not in the group it wouldn't have been as great as they were. Wish there was more groups like this. Could listen to them all the time.....and to Mama Casa alone. Wow what a voice!
Said before, one of the great tragedies of modern music was when this band ended. She was the glue, the voice of an angel, no group could have survived a loss like that, she was just amazing, one of my favorite female vocalists of all time, certainly the favorite female vocalist of my youth - and there were many great ones in those days, 60's and early 70's. I still miss her and still love their music.
Mama Cass is being funny as she so was. She laughed at the fun poked at her in the song but she also laughed at Topol living within the mike and the fact they were not singing live. The girl was seriously funny.
I'm pretty sure the vocals were live, for a couple of reasons: The harmonies are different from every other time I've heard them do it, and if you listen starting with the"Mugwumps/High Jumps" part, the vocals get ahead of the instrumentals until Michele pulls them back on "Michelle, John, and Denny/getting very tuneful" Singing live to a recorded instrumental track was not uncommon back in the day.
"Creeque Alley" John and Mitchie were gettin' kind of itchy Just to leave the folk music behind; Zal and Denny workin' for a penny Tryin' to get a fish on the line. In a coffee house Sebastian sat, And after every number they'd pass the hat. McGuinn and McGuire just a-gettin' higher in L.A., You know where that's at. And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. Zallie said, "Denny, you know there aren't many Who can sing a song the way that you do; let's go south." Denny said, Zallie, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you." Zal, Denny, and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) And after every number they'd pass the hat. McGuinn and McGuire still a-gettin higher in L.A., You know where that's at. And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swathmore But she changed her mind one day. Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike, "Take me to New York right away." When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps; Called John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps. McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get no higher But that's what they were aimin' at. And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps - Don't you work as hard as you play. Make up, break up, everything is shake up; Guess it had to be that way. Sebastian and Zal formed the 'Spoonful; Michelle, John, and Denny gettin' very tuneful. McGuinn and McGuire just a-catchin' fire in L.A., You know where that's at. And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. Broke, busted, disgusted, agents can't be trusted, And Mitchie wants to go to the sea. Cass can't make it; she says we'll have to fake it - We knew she'd come eventually. Greasin' on American Express cards; Tents low rent, but keeping out the heat's hard. Duffy's good vibrations and our imaginations Can't go on indefinitely. And California dreamin' is becomin' a reality...
I was there a year after, in 1968 and was so disapointed that I missed Monterey Pop Festival. And them. But I heard a lot of new bands at Filmore West. Great times.
@@duncansmith8992 I was there on July 25 and saw Moby Grape, Mint Tatoo and Jeff Beck Group with a then totally unknown Rod Stewart. The flyer for the rest of July and August which I still have, mentions Santana, Iron Butterfly, Canned Heat, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Blood Sweat and Tears, The Who, Creedence Clearwater, Grateful Dead, Steppenwolf, Preservation Hall Jazz Band (I stayed with them in New Orleans) and many others. Not bad.
Just imagine the life of John Phillips circa 65-68. For fleeting moments he must have felt the King of the world. And with songwriting genius, success and the most beautiful girl of the 60s around his arm it's hard to argue.
Imagine the horrific comments that would have plagued mama cass if the Internet had existed back then. She probably wouldn't have had the courage to sing in publuc. Let that sink in. Now try to imagine how much our society has cheated itself because of Internet trolls. Maybe a cass stopped from creating something great out of fear of ridicule.
Ok yes in some ways i agree. They'd rip people apart in hurtful ways. The thing is though that is that there has always been voluptuous singers... great ones too. Ella Fitzgerald, Adele, Winona Judd & at her heaviest Stevie Nicks. All legends in their own right. If people can't look past the package they are missing out on heavenly voices.

Camouflage PCT Productions The assassinations and turmoil of the 60's and the wrecked economy of the 70's just for starters. Besides the revisionist history people are using, what was so damn good about that time? The fucking music?
How about the Vietnam War. You remember, the war we didn't try to win but still kept sending soldiers to fight. Is this another part or that wonderful time or part of a sad life. Are you aware of this point?
There's a solo compilation of Cass Elliot's work( blue & white cd cover/check out on Amazon) that has some great unknown stuff on it. I personally think her solo version of, "Do You Want To Dance" is even better than with the group. She was just starting to explore new musical horizons when tragedy struck. Check out that cd!

"And no ones getting fat except Mamma Cass." I love it!!! Yeah, FAT shaming. Telling it like it is. No one's getting fat except Mamma Cass. Cass had no problem with it so why do you??? That was back then when people weren't snowflakes and hurt by everything someone said. And as she was getting fatter she choked on a ham sandwich and died. True story. Google it.
Michelle told the story about the "no one's getting fat" line. I don't remember if I heard it here on you tube or on TV but it seems she was afraid to tell Cass the line so she made John do it. She thought it was funny as hell. things were different back then. None of the political correctness we see today. Cass died from a heart attack, not a sandwich.
She brilliantly preempted the fat insults by owning it and taking it away as an insult. This helped her immeasurably as a performer to get out there on stage and give it her best. Not condoning her lifestyle or choices but that was a smart move and it probably helped Adele and even others get past their stage jitters when they felt fat or ugly or self conscious.
Mama Cass voice would hit notes that were up and not the same as the rest of the singers and it made them stand out so wellthe tonal inflections were so great like the Beatles in i should have known better and she loves you

Makes you want to be in The Night Owl with Sebastian, doesn't it?
This song was John Phillips best songwriting achievement, great lyrics, melody, and the four of them in perfect harmony......a REAL 60's classic

It makes me wonder if Cass had lived, what would her career be like? Same with Hendrix, Joplin, etc.

She said Topo, a reference to Topo Gigio, a mouse puppet that appeared often on the Ed Sullivan Show, which is where this video is taken from.

So happy to see them here on youtube , Thank You :) QC
...and California dreamin' is becoming a reality ....
In many ways this is the story of how folk rock as well as the early seventies California sound was born.
f- me, so much talent ... and so much LSD in their veins, you can literally see it ;-)
Amo a Mamá Cass

True. Witness what happened to the magnificent Charlotte Church...
Mark Burch and now it's still the same
People keep comparing cass to michelle
Talking shit about michelle only using her look
This is just sad .
Although I kinda agree with this statement. I have one name that proves that with a powerful enough voice people will ignore looks. Adele
Ok yes in some ways i agree. They'd rip people apart in hurtful ways. The thing is though that is that there has always been voluptuous singers... great ones too.

I love when Mama Cass says, "Cue tape", since everyone knows they are lip-syncing.
What?
Yeah, all these 60's tv music performances were recorded in advance.
I think she said it as a joke. Michelle thought it was funny. Otherwise she would be embarassed.
You can hear the mic sound when he remounts it on the stand at the end....
They are actually singing live here. The tape playing is the backing track. The guitar isn't being played live however.

that is just an urban legend that has been proven false multiple times, but she did die from obesity
but I do agree with Dr. Richmann on everything else. She clearly didn't care about her weight to that point or wouldn't have included the lyrics.

What a tragedy their personal lives were so screwed up , great music .
awww so tongue in cheek
John Lennon and George Harrison are now transforming into Steve Perry and Barry Gibb
Hits of axxx, then to stage for some singing 🤯
"And no one is getting fat except Mama Cass"......!!!!!
"and no one's getting fat 'cept Mama Cass'. - wonder how she felt about that lyric.
she had a sense of humour, im sure she found it funny or she wouldnt have sang it or let it get into one of their songs
Its actually refers to her making the most money in the early days, she encouraged the lyric after it was run past her
She brilliantly preempted the fat insults by owning it and taking it away as an insult. This helped her immeasurably as a performer to get out there on stage and give it her best. I know this is lip synced, but I have read that they would sometimes sing live while the recorded version also played. That was just to add more voices and make the harmony even more powerful. That would work if they were completely in sync with the original. I don't know if this is true or not.
I am surprised that anyone would not think that this was not lip synced. For one thing it sounds exactly like the radio version, and also, the overlaid tracks. They could only sing one part of the harmony at a time.
