  • A loose impasto oil painting technique has been used in this painting lesson. Shapes are simplified. Warm and cool color temperature and strong color values all make a colorful and textured painting.
Tired of tight paintings that lack energy and color? Try simplified shapes and using impasto painting techniques with confident brushwork. Practice these steps and you will loosen up your painting style quickly. You will find more tips about this approach in my course How to Loosen Up Your Painting: www.malcolmdew...

How nice to hear a South African accent in a tutorial for a change.
And that landscape inspiration pic makes me “verlang” home.
So a happy and sad video 😄😔

    Thanks for the tips.
I've NEVER done oil painting in my life, and this is how I'm going to start.

Great video, but so glad that you've changed your video editing style in more recent videos - the constant transitions make it impossible to really look at the painting in each stage! 😅

    Very nice painting indeed ...
    Very painterly ...
Without its few final details, it makes me think a bit about Cézannes fantastic late landscapes. I mean: it's in the same 'ball park', it's so to say 'of the same family' ?!?
But ... with more 'spring'y colors

Thank you Peter. I do love Cezanne's paintings. If there is any visible influence then I am happy for it. I find him a constant source of inspiration

I didn't know that you could ground an oil painting with acrylic. Is there anything to be careful of when doing this? Also, I notice that a lot of the impressionistic landscape paintings I love seem to be grounded with purples and reds - though I was taught to always ground with burnt umber. When you refer to layers, does that mean you let the painting dry completely between applications? Thank you - this is super helpful!
